  • Aguascalientes is a city that has a lot to offer here in beautiful Mexico. Welcome to our channel why not now. Today, we will start by taking you along with us in Aguascalientes, Mexico to run a couple of errands. First, we stop at Walmart to pick up a few things for a taco salad which we will quickly put together back at home. *BUT...we also wanted to have a conversation about what can sometimes be a very sensitive/ touchy topic ~ do you refer to yourself as an "expat", or "immigrant""foreigner", or "extranjero", and why? Let's have a very honest, and open-ended discussion so we can better understand one another, on a topic that can/ has sometimes been the cause of tension/misunderstanding (most importantly, share your thoughts but do so respectfully as always). Expat OR Immigrant? Expatriado O Inmigrante? ¿Cómo te llamas a ti mismo y por qué?* If you are new to our channel please check out our videos as we have a wealth of information about living in Mexico ~You will find a diverse library of videos ranging from informative content (how to obtain your residency in Mexico/ How to renew your residency in Mexico, apartment tours, cost of living in Mexico, and neighborhood tours}. We also have a number of Mexico travel vlogs, as well as how to travel with pets (Traveling with pets in Mexico, vet costs), and MUCH MORE...

I don’t like that they say expats because we are all immigrants if we are living in a country that isn’t our birth country. Pretty sure that makes sense. Expat just is another name that separates people, I can say that because I was born white and privileged and I have a Hispanic nephew and a black niece. I have seen so much more than I ever wanted to see about my privilege and what privileges my sweet niece and nephew don’t have. My grandfather came from Germany an immigrant my grandmother came from Russia an immigrant you can’t get much whiter!! 🤣

I've always been against the term "Expat" for people who are temporary or permanent residents in a country outside their home country. People (US/Canada/UK) primarily use Expat as a title to avoid using the word "Immigrant" even though they are 100% immigrants by law in the country they think they're an Expat in. That's why you have to go to the IMMIGRATION OFFICE to become a Temporary or Permanent Resident in any country in the world. You're either a Citizen of a country or you are a Immigrant of a Country. There's nothing in-between. And yes, people say Expat as to show superiority over other "so-called immigrants" they believe they don't align with in this case. It's actually pitiful.

Differences between expatriates and immigrants, perhaps it is the time they spend in a different country, it may be due to different situations, economic, vacations or knowing more about other cultures, perhaps it would be better to be a citizen of the world. Thank you for opening the doors of your house and your heart, as I said before you are no longer foreigners, you are part of Mexico.

@@sisik1613 Hi Sisi K.....I agree with you....I have been watching Why not Now videos since this week when I found them searching for videos in México and I loved their videos. I ended up subscribing to their channel yesterday after watching several of their videos. I love them and Lisa Marie....I can tell she is a kind human being like you said, with a sweet spirit.........We are also thinking of moving (back) to Mexico....I say back because I was born there but was brought to the USA when I was 13 years old and it's been 26 long years....I never thought I wanted to go back (I've never been, actually)....but 2 years ago this feeling of wanting to go back and live in my mother country came to me and I cannot wait. We are thinking 3 more years but it seems so long for me.....we have to though.....you know.....we are trying to save as much $ as we can and plan things because we also have 2 daughters....I was wondering how old your daughter is.....how does she feel about moving there? Both of my daughters are fine with us moving as a family but by that time they will be 17 and 14....it makes me a little nervous about moving them before our oldest graduates from High school and my youngest being a freshman or so at the time......Then I think about it and I was fine when my parents brought me here and thats even thinking about the fact that I did not speak English....My daughters (especially my oldest) are fluent in Spanish, so that is a plus for them.......Anyway.......basically just wondering about your daughter and your move to México....that is so exciting! Every time I know of someone leaving soon I think about when we get to do it too and I cannot wait!!!! Buena suerte!!!!

Hola guys! So, I'll chime in on this topic. As I listened to your discussion on those two "labels" it brought to mind the terrible storm of Katrina oddly. I'm sure you recall how the media was referring to the victims as refugees. I found the label/word to be both inaccurate and offensive. Well, all I'll say regarding the use of the ex-pat and immigrant words is that I would simply encourage everyone to listen and learn from others on the use of them. Words as you know can easily be interpreted differently depending on the audience. I don't believe there is one right response. And, learning about those differences, perspectively is interesting. Personally, I am an immigrant. I guess one could argue that I belong to a community of so-called "ex-pats", but whatever. I love my new home country and I'm not here to change it but to embrace it. Good topic! Thanks for all your hard work and effort to bring authentic content to an otherwise ocean of "stuff". On a different note, I also cook more than I eat out here in Mexico, and your dish looks yummy. 😋 Glad you both are feeling better. Joe Pesci is a boss, LOL, and both are too cute. Have a great day!

It's my understanding that an expatriate is someone who formally renounces their citizenship of origin...ultimately turning in their passport, relinquishing their responsibility as a tax payer to that country. I follow Nomad Capitalist as well on RUclips and their focus is taking your money, in its entirety with you, out of the country you're leaving, i.e. money set aside for taxes as well. I believe the only way to do that, is by giving up your U. S. or Canadian passport. You are no longer a tax paying patriot of that country. That may be only one definition though. Great content as always, you two! Cheers! ✌🏼

That's also my understanding of expatriates - voluntarly renouncing country of origin. Immigrants migrate to other countries, but they don't renounce their country of origin. Many immigrants actually return to their country of origin.

Another great meal. I love your videos. Your Spanish is getting so 👍 good. You are inspiring me to try cooking at home. I like that...' donkey of the day.' I remember a saying, "the personal is the political," which means that it is challenging to separate the two. I think expat implies the privilege to return to your home country wherein you were doing just fine. However, immigrant refers to folks who are pursuing a better economic opportunity that is not offered in one's own country. When I move to another country, I will consider myself an immigrant. Thanks for another great video.

I actually think most Mexicans do not care how people from other countries that move to Mexico call themselves, we will still call you "Gringo" and we don't mean that in a derogatory manner it's just a term we've used for decades, and Steve don't get offended by this but we would call people of color "negritos" but again it is not used in a derogatory manner, but I agree with the post below from Global Adventurer that people call themselves "expats" to avoid using the term "immigrant". Immigrant is mostly consider a bad term in USA, because most people will affiliate the term with an illegal immigrant henceforth the term expat.

Hey guys, first time commenting. Expat vs. Immigrant. I believe the correct word to use depends on the perspective you are commenting from. Expat denotes an egress situation (leaving )vs. immigrant denotes an ingress situation (entering into). People leaving a country to live elsewhere are considered expats by the country they are leaving and immigrants to their new country of residence. I don’t really see the need for conflict between these two words as they really have different applications , in my opinion, of course. Thanks for the awesome videos. I plan to spend a year or three , or more ,in México beginning later this year so I look forward to experiencing that amazing country for myself. Thanks and be well!

An Australian here (I am an immigrant myself), I’ve always thought of ‘expats’ as being people who temporarily move to another country (with or without their family) with their job/company. Those who have moved with out it being a requirement of their company I always considered to be immigrants, particularly if they’re moving permanently or semi-permanently. Maybe it’s just me. I don’t find any of the terms mentioned to be offensive.

Hey guys. I have some constructive criticism. I say this out of respect to you because I think you guys are great and I wish you much success!
My ONLY criticism is that your videos are a bit too lengthy. I think in terms of You Tube 20 :minutes is a good length.
The attention span of most people is not much more than 20 minutes.

We have no preference for ex-pats or immigrants. Obviously, we would be immigrants, but ex-pat seems temporary maybe? Not sure. Though our plan is to go for permanent. We've just been referring to ourselves as expats because we've heard that term used quite a bit and we have no plans to give up our citizenship in the USA.

I don't know the technical differences and will not look it up. My definition of an immigrant is when you immigrate because you have to (work, peace) when you bring money with you and it's mostly because you want to..I call them expats. But I've been wrong a couple of times before. Anyways I don't believe is the same thing. One thing I very much dislike (to say it politely) is when they say every body is equal or the same. Some are good, most perhaps and some are really bad.

I'll save you some time :) Immigrant is someone who lives permanently outside their native country. An Expat is someone who lives temporarily outside their native country. (like digital nomads that travel for instance). So, anyone seeking residence in a country is a IMMIGRANT according to on web definitions.

  • @sweetandsimple.
    @sweetandsimple. 2 года назад +1

Both technically mean the same thing but the motive of the move is how people try to differentiate the terms. Most associate immigrants with someone who leaves to another country to benefit from "better resources" and earning potential and expats with those who leave to another country to benefit from living off a weaker currency and a slower pace of life. But everyone at the end of the day is just trying to have their version of a better life.

Hi guys. I was just following up since the videos you posted when you were in Mazatlan and you mentioned a few times about supporting the local economy instead of the corporate business’s like hotels and Big box chain stores. Hi Julie, I do recall the Mazatlan video where we chatted with Abraham a bit, and he had mentioned that the larger hotels were paying very little, etc.. We in turn asked him if he had a website, to which he said he did not so I think we just announced the shop (Senor Frogs) where he said he is usually in front of in the event anyone visiting, wanted to check him out. I don't recall any conversation about big box stores though. Not taken as criticism at all Julie. Side note, if there is something else you would like to say, feel free.

You showed you were in Mexico with the green Walmart bags. Yes I have forgotten them and had to buy another at the store!
When I was in the states you still got plastic. So Mexico Walmart is doing a little for the planet. Yeah I shop at Walmart about 6 or 7 blocks from our apartment in Mexico City. Yes Walmart is Walmart. I would say a little nicer than the states maybe. But on Mondays and Friday the puestas have market days right outside our place and I buy verduras and papaya and sandia there. I like the puestas and chatting with the vendedoras.
I grew up Midwest rural. Im white so after really thinking about it I call myself a resident. Expat sadly I think does have connotation that you would only use it if you were white or a person from a wealthier country coming to a poorer one. I dont call myself an immigrant because I never plan on buying a house and getting my citizenship here. Never plan on voting. Permanent Resident is on the card so I take confidence in calling myself that.
Your videos are great. I was in Aquas a couple of times. Never saw a Reileros game may have to come back to do that.

I think some people in the U.S. has a negative image and/or have tendency to look down on immigrants. So when they become immigrants themselves by moving outside of the U.S., they don’t want to call themselves “immigrants” but expats.
Some more, the word “expats” sounds a bit similar to “experts” giving the feeling of superiority, I guess.
BTW, I’m proud to be an immigrant/alien/foreigner living in the U.S. ✌️ I also work in Mexico time to time staying in the house I’m renting in my favorite Aguascalientes.

I think the term expat was not intended to be a term of privilege, it simply was a word to describe British, American and some other westerners, mostly of an artistic bent who lived outside their countries in the early decades of the 20th century. The term has become popular again among mostly American, Canadian and some other mostly Anglo folks to describe their out-of-country status. However, it comes off as a term of privilege given that these same groups refer to other non-Anglo people arriving in their country of origin in disparaging ways. Even the word immigrant has become a negative term in many circles. I think that Americans (especially Americans) and Canadians (and, perhaps, others) need to end the use of this exclusive term and refer to themselves accurately instead of using the ambivalent and elitist term. If you’re a resident of MX or whatever non-country of birth then you’re an immigrant. Be clear please and stop setting yourselves apart from the rest of humanity. Be inclusive.
