This journey will be straight out of the "fairy tale", something like you have never seen before! In the distance on an Immaculate meadow emerges a glooming French castle, its appearance is straight out of a movie! Build in the year 1726 by the influential and powerful Neveu family, a family that yielded their influence over this region of France and in the process became extremely wealthy. Their castle makes a statement and shows the strength of this family over generations, the last owner of this place used to be the aristocratic Joan, he continued on the path of his ancestors and lived a life of glamour and wealth. Mister Joan had 6 children and a loving wife, for many decades, the family lived together inside this castle and in the process created countless memories that are still there to this day! Besides being a great businessman, he also loved to hunt and collect rare and classic cars, this tragically also caused his death, because on the 23t of September in 2013 Mister Joan was involved in a car accident and was killed instantly. His children had moved out by now and abandoned the castle causing it to slowly deteriorate over the years until the state it is in right now, almost unsavable…

I also don’t understand: WHY THE CITY HALL DOES NOT TAKE MEASURES TO CONVERT SUCH BUILDINGS FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PEOPLE: after all, it would be possible to open a home for the elderly there; various schools, shops, restaurants, hotels, museums....
- But unfortunately, due to the unreasonableness of the mayor's office... such buildings simply disappear in all the winds, snow and rain.
- Probably everything again and again - depends on the entire population... who received such an abandoned heritage.
- After all, the property could be sold to the population... rather than being given over to be torn to pieces by merciless nature.
I agree so much history lost very sad.
Many years ago, here in the UK, there was a manor house that was sold off, subdivided by a developer that did some remedial work and central services put in and then subdivided into apartment sections which were sold seperately. Each purchaser was then responsible for restoring their apartment. It was an amazing project with a lot of very, very hard work over years, but the result saved the building and created beautiful homes.

That is how you honor your history by preserving it not by abandoning it. Not everything can be saved but some things are irreplaceable.
This option is much better...than leaving it to nature...

Fun fact: the "Roman man" at 51:00 is actually a statue of Diana, goddess of the hunt 😉it's possible that at one time this property may have been merely the family's "hunting lodge" with their primary residence elsewhere. Love seeing inside these places, thank you!

If I'm not mistaken, the room you said was for food storage may originally have been a still/apothecary room where herbs were dried and remedies were compounded and put together. They were usually located near the kitchens on the lowest floor where it tended to stay darker and cool. Amazing place!
Yes, I believe you're correct. Funny, that they still use Marinol, a derivative of marijuana, to help "rev-up" the appetite of people who are ill or for whatever reason, have no appetite. (Yep, the whole "weed munchies" concept is an actual thing lol)

It still blows my mind that families leave so many things behind. I understand that managing a Chateau is very costly, it does appear that the family could not afford the upkeep even when they were living there too much decay for being abandoned in 2008, but why they don't sell off the furniture or donate it with the clothing, then take family photos and other personal items before leaving. and at least try to sell the Chateau before it gets to the point that it can't be restored. Great video Lesley, PLEASE wear a mask, that black mold might cause harm later in life, you breath in way too much of it, also a lot of those old Chateaus have asbestos as well. It might be a case of heirs fighting over the estate? These issues take years to resolve. And sometimes it is restricted to sell or divide these huge estates through inheritance prohibition’s from ancient days. This is sometimes what does them in sadly.
@joni marchess I agree with on this, it seems like they just have no value on anything they have had in life. The furniture alone an the books must be with a fortune , hello from a upstate New Yorker as well.
I believe many times people were ran out of their homes due to wars, we're maybe killed, or taken hostage, so things get left behind. Just what my intuition says... I know it says he was in a car accident, so then his like (many families) could have been victims of violence or driven out... Who knows though.
French inheritance laws and tax make it almost impossible for a chateau to stay in the family: firstly the estate is split between by the inheritors (4 sisters for this chateau) and then each pays 45% tax on the rest (after a €100k allowance). In this case the chattels were sold off by auction for around €90k in 2014, and most recently the chateau was sold by judicial auction for €201k - about the value of the forest and farmland.

I mean my goodness some of the stuff in these homes are worth a fortune. It just amazes me how these people lived. I love old homes ,old things ,history, it is way more interesting then modern day.

No abandoned place is more beatiful and more interesting to explore than an abandoned castle! This castle is just gorgeous, all its rooms displaying so many priceless artifacts and exquisite works of art ! So sad to realize its beauty and value may never be restored! You look like a perfect gentleman in this outfit, Lesley and it's been a pleasure to watch this great exploration!
No one does these abandoned tours as good as you do. You cover everything of interest, give as much background on the owners and what happened to them as possible. You also show respect to those that were there but have now moved on.

@@bernadettekavanagh9984 I think the “victors” of imperial power are just Germany, England and America, those are usually the big three fighting over artifacts, Rome and Israel try to grab objects of interest sometimes too but usually just whatever they can bring back to their catacombs and vaults, none of these powers are rightful owners of properties and honestly shouldn’t be allowed to remove artifacts from where they were found, they’re all usurper alumni of the house of Israel (Marion murderers)

This place is absolutely stunning. It's so sad to see it fall into decay like this. A place as this should be glorious and well cared for. It's so sad that the children of the owner didn't even bother to do anything with this castle as it could be used for so many things.

Love All the Decorative Glass Plates on the Wall & all the Beautiful China!!
Love that some rooms are in Good Condition, while the other rooms with furniture are Decaying!!
Love the Antler Lamp & Antler by the stairway, that holds a Hunting Horn & Cow Horns or could be Bull Horns!
Love the Paris Clock!! Now the Brown Bathtub, Sink & Toilet...the color brown was from 1970 in America!
As for the Pall Mall Cigarettes Pack with that Emblem on the Front, They Still Sell Them in Red & Green for Menthol in America, 2023!!

It is so sad to see how a tragic accident can bring down an entire dynasty. Every room has memories that are just frozen in time.
Why doesn’t the government of France restore these and rent out rooms to tourists or turn them into museums. These castles are masterpieces
To expensive to restore after they have been abandoned by the owners for so long. I imagine that the roof in the older side of the castle is rotted through. It also may have a major termite problem besides the black mold. The family really should remove the antiques from the building and possibly display them in an art gallery. There is so much history in these old castles. It is such a waste to let them go this way.

Where I live they have taken old home and restored them to turn them into musuems, of bed and breakfast. I have seen others turned into apartments. This place is georgous, and a historical site. It really needs to be saved using taxes and volunteers for future generations to relive history. They could make the money up by making this a tourist attraction.
@@aleafox1675 The house is absolutely beautiful. I think the biggest problem would be an initial investment in it. By the looks of some of the ceilings, there has been roofing problems. We really didn't see it very closely, I imagine that there are termites and wood rot throughout the structure. Those spiders are another problem, once they get a foothold they are not easy to get rid of. The video didn't show the foundation of the building or the roof, so if they are not salvageable, then it wouldn't be safe to have people live in it. All of this is actually predicated on whether the family that owns it is willing to do a transfer of ownership to the government to let them restore it. Governments usually do not get involved in private property ownership. Most homes or castles such as this one, are refurbished and maintained by the family who owns it. This one in not abandoned, it is sitting empty but it is still a part of an estate. It has a lot of personal effects still in the home, such as clothing, pictures, and other personal items.
Watching old houses, castles and ruins makes me feel that spirits are just there lurking inside the place. We truly can't take anything when we die. We just have to enjoy life to the fullest and be present in the moment. Make beautiful memories! Nice video. 😊

Yeah, I think you're absolutely right. For the castle to have only been abandoned for 8 years, there's FAR too much decay for it to have been recent. Even taking to account that it's literally sitting on water. The place was very likely falling into ruin while still occupied, with the last owners likely unable to fully keep up with the expense of maintaining the grounds.
It's a shame that you weren't able to get any footage of the grounds, that bell tower(?) to the front of the castle, and that building to the side that looked like stables. That would have been interesting to see.

Hello from western Canada. Can you explain to us why a whole family would abandon everything?? Can you explain why no one comes to the rescue of these priceless treasures? There must be members of the family thrilled to have the China or paintings?? Can no one save anything?? Is it junk to the French people? Such waste makes me very sad. If I could come from my humble farm in Canada to help save these treasures I would.
@@dorothywillms115 There's another story behind all of this. And it all has to do with inheritance. The children finally got it much later on. This video is probably 12 years old.

It's pretty wonderful that this castle has so many antiques decorating its walls. I really like the recessed paintings, plates and tea sets. The wooden trim along with the tall windows and grand doors transports us to another era in time.

I like the clip you left in of the “re-entry”:of the business office. It gave a little insight ( the deep breath before walking in, etc.) into the tremendous prep work and skill it takes to take us on these incredible journeys. You make iit look too easy when we all know deep down that it is definitely not!

That first mystery room at 6:38 looks like a plant room, a trough for watering, that’s a potting bench in the back.
This is the most romantic castle I have ever seen. There were a lot of books, but why wasn't there a library? I find this odd. I would think that during this time period there would be a very large one. I was amazed at how the paint in the living areas was in fairly good shape. I'd like to know what brand they used. I wish Disney would or someone like Downton Abbey would purchase this, and restore it to it's grandsor. Simply 🌹 romance.

At 11:37 in the video is what appears to be a 'built in' corner shelf. (with small statues) I was told that these nooks are notched out in the past to accommodate furniture and coffin moving around the staircases. Before there were funeral homes, they had 'wake' rooms where the deceased would be honored for a few days before burial. Once the business of funeral homes came about, 'wake' rooms were renamed 'living rooms' to accommodate the living. Historical places like this are fascinating, thank you for your informative adventures and taking all of your viewers with you! Cheers~
I think it is very depressing to see all the abandoned homes . Where did the rest of the family go and why leave memories behind . Very saddened to know these homes never hear the voices of adults or the laughter of children.

This castle was built before the French Revolution -- so many changes since that time. One wonders if the family was able to escape. Although the moat is beautiful, it is probably the cause of much of the deterioration and black mold. Thank you for the thorough tour -- you both do an excellent job.

Lesley, I decided to look up castles in France before I saw this video. I read that there are hundreds of vacant castles are found all over the country. I guess the younger generations want to live more in the cities and live a life where they can travel the world. They don't want them anymore and they're too expensive to fix because they have to be upgraded to the latest technologies. Anyway, I saw your video of the churches in Detroit. I think that your admiration of the buildings that you explore comes across in your voice. It makes it so enjoyable to sit back and look at everything through your eyes. Yes - it is surprising that the portraits are sold off - it they were mine I would treasure them. I live close by to this chateau and there are lots of local auctions where family portraits and old photo albums are sold of: they get good prices: people like the portraits - especially in Paris apartments - and the albums are split up - old photos (pre 1900) get €40 each on ebay, and an album might have 200 photos in it...

First time finding your channel. This place was amazing. It just breaks my heart that the family just walked away from all of this history. Instead of letting it go to ruin at least let someone come in an salvage some of the items that others would just love to have. History is being lost here. Beautiful though. Thanks for sharing!
I would love to clean that place up and make it look nice with what is there. I would like to live there as long as it is rain tight. Amazing that it has not been broken into. The owners must be wealthy , to be able to let such a lovely home rot away and to leave beautiful collectors items behind.
That place screams for someone to rescue it.

These stories are so sad when someone dies and all that was them, their homes, clothing and personal items sit there waiting for their owner to return. The castle is gorgeous but it is a shame that it's falling to ruin. I just wanted to add that the first section you expored was the servants work and living area ( break rooms and a small kitchen for their own use). When the main kitchen was in the basement the room you couldn't figure out where animals were kept was the butchers room, they would cut up the meat once the animals wee slaughtered at another location, most likely outside in a barn somewhere on the grounds. There was also a small space at the bottom of the spiral staircase that had a latch to keep it closed I think you overlooked. The floors about were where the staff lived and ate. The main part of the Castle was were the residents lived.
The painting in the sitting room with all the magazines was of King Louis XIV of France.
You really do need to be extra careful around that amount of black mold. If you get the spores in your nasal passages or inhale them into your lungs it could make you extremely ill and many people still lie from the mold that spreads to their lungs and brain so use caution when entering these places that are this decayed. At least wear of paper mask over your nose and mouth. I had a friend nearly die from black mold some years back. She. her son and father all were hospitalized and their house was condemned due to the black mold in their basement.

Yeah I saw that little door with the latch at the bottom of the staircase too. I was hoping he would try to open it. I agree about the black mold, he should at least wear a mask. I hope he doesn’t get ill. God bless him & keep him safe. That wooden wagon was so cool. Items like that from these castles should be put in some kind of a museum with the history & usage of them. Such wonderful & educational pieces of history from our past.

@@craftingwithcharm7665 I agree. Someone should take the initiative to restore these historical places. We have many here in the states that are old homes and mansions that have been restored and placed on the Historical Society registry. Many well over 100 years old and yet some people still live in them. I see so many beautiful old homes for sale and I would really love to own one of them.

The bowl shown at time 17:15 sec is Japanese Imari porcelain and like;y the porcelain hung high up on the wall is Imari as well. I hopw the heavy pieve of dish or whatever it is was not put back into the high quality Imari bowl which would damage it. Thank you for showing this piece. The maker of the piano is Pleyel et Cie. ("Pleyel and Company") was a French piano manufacturing firm founded by the composer Ignace Pleyel in 1807.[2] In 1815, Pleyel's son Camille joined him as a business partner. The firm provided pianos to Frédéric Chopin,[3] who considered Pleyel pianos to be "non plus ultra".[4] Pleyel et Cie. also operated a concert hall, the Salle Pleyel, where Chopin performed his first - and last - Paris concerts.- reference Wkipedia.

Lesley, this is just amazing, thank you so much for giving us a tour. Perhaps the owner’s estate was contested by relatives or estate taxes have caused a delay in settlement, I’m in America and this happens often if families own large properties with land. There are so many expensive treasures left in the mansion, the furniture, chandeliers or even a rare book could be worth thousands.
I love the reverence that he shows these homes. He speaks in hushed tones. It feels appropriate somehow. There's something ghostly about these houses because you can so clearly see the imprints people left in these homes through their furniture, the arrangement of their rooms, the photographs left behind. They are not just buildings, they feel like monuments to people who have long since passed. I wonder if someday another person will discover my personality by inspecting my remnants.
Furthermore, you can see the pain that this person lived in in the final years of their life. My dad makes stacks like this. He's a troubled person. There is so much of the save-save-save mentality to him - which is not wrong, sometimes - but you can see what it left behind, and how much it was appreciated by the people who lived past him, whether those were friends or descendants or merely beneficiaries.

If none of the heirs want the castle why don’t they let someone sell the thousands and thousands of dollars worth of contents. For a charity if nothing else. I would be willing as many others. Otherwise what a terrible waste.

This is a wonderful exploration of an old French castle. Great documentary of a time, a place and the past. So sad the owner was killed in an auto accident. Very beautiful place. Thank you for the great work.
It’s ironic, really. The owner’s obvious adoration of automobiles - which killed him in the end. He must have intuited his exit point.

Thank you for sharing. It’s heartbreaking to see such beautiful homes abandoned and decaying. Sad that none of his children kept it , lived in it and kept it repaired.
The childs tricycle was really nice. You could tell at one time that many of the rooms were lovely. Also just still seems sad. So much life there once. They should let an auctioneer hold things cleaned up and on the lawn in air conditioned tent with pastries and cold drinks. Before long, won't be able to, with the water and moisture that will destroy it. And not have sale inside with the mold. But I think people would come to the sale to even look at the outside of the castle. Just a thought. Thank you for really very nice tour and you are so friendly. 😊
Just want to say I really enjoy your work!! It’s beautiful you can bring life and interest to places that would never be seen again. It is so sad to see such grand places left. But the cost of restoration must be too much for surviving members of a younger generation who prefer more modern luxuries

I found your channel about a month ago and have been binge watching. I love old castle's I'm from USA we have few castle's here & you can only see the outside. I love how you show details and explain everything you are really good at this thanks for entertaining. Seeing these places falling down is sad. I'd have a hard time with leaving all those antiques To be destroyed I'd have lots of storage buildings to restore these things . This is one of the nicer ones you shown. You'd be saving these antiques and people would buy them get more use out of them it would be a good business.
Please be very careful of black mold in so many of theses amazing places you share with us. It can be deadly to breathe in. Thank you so much for taking all of us on these adventures with you.

I can't imagine how there are so many of these incredible places all over France and Europe ... It doesn't make any sense to me that no one cares about so many of them anymore ... You are so great at showing this with great respect. It looks as if a family member was an artist, due to painting standing up on shelves without frames and you can tell those are the same artist. With price tags on other framed works is another hint. Someone was selling the framed one's in one of the rooms. Oh my word, it's heart wrenching to see the castle deteriorating but all the furniture, artworks, light fixtures... it's just sickening it breaks my heart.
Such a place of pride left abandoned. It should be preserved and given all the respect it deserves. I wish I had this❤ I would have loved this place then😍

I love when you dress the part and explain the history of the place. I like your appreciation of the places you explore. I also enjoy the detail that you go into as you go through the rooms. Beautiful French castle with a lot of interesting items and designs!
This is the best abandoned explorations I’ve seen. This castle is so lovely with its elegant touches throughout. So homey yet elegant rich and sumptuous. The wood carvings, gold gilding and simple luxury. The architecture is stunning inside and out. The beautifully understated stair railing is so special with it’s glass newel post. The furnishings and built in’s with luxurious carvings, the huge windows with vertical wood shutters would have given this home wonderful light during the day. The rooms with new items in them are sad for sure. I’m so sad this is left to the devastation of time and nature.
