    I think Ed's redeeming quality is his relationship with Balrog. It's heartwarming how Balrog took the kid under his wing, although it was motivated by greed. Having Ed following Balrog all the way through the game's cinematic story and Balrog's story only for them to fight and split up during Ed's story is sad, especially when coupled with how happy they are during Ed's arcade mode ending.
    Anyway, looking forward to the next ABItorial after this EDitorial

      @chipslight738 6 лет назад +63

      Yeah, that was really enjoyable, it added depth to Balrog, something he's been thoroughly missing for years in my point. So it's nice to know that Balroh isn't just "big bad guy that wants money" but a greedy guy that managed to have relationship with people but probably destroyed due to his own greed.

      Ed, in a way, opens up Balrog's character as much as his own, Falke's and the whole new Shadaloo (which I imagine is full of test subjects). How Rock is the perfect future protagonist, Ed is the perfect future catalyst (basically Necalli story wise).

    I def agree with all your points, except the hoodie. It invokes the theme that he's still in training under Balrog (think Rocky's hoodie and sweatpants), but the bright red shoes invoke the idea that he has money - meaning that Balrog must've cared enough to buy him new shoes.
    He's definitely wasted potential the way he is now. I would've wanted to see him tie into Abel's storyline - since they're both Bison Babies, they're effectively brothers. I could see Abel having a similar story to Ryu's, where a metaphoric tug-of-war happens between Guile, who wants to pull Abel towards duty and justice, and Ed, who wants to pull him towards self-indulgence and power.

    Yeah, even Yun and Yang are super buff... Their SF3 sprites and SF4 portraits are freaking ripped. At least that makes sense though since they're kung fu dudes. If you've ever seen Asian gymnasts or martial artists who practiced since they were young, they usually won't be beefy like Ryu, just toned like the twins, and look completely normally-built under regular clothes.

    You missed the hidden BEST part of his design: He's Both M.Bisons. His outfit and psycho power is indicative of Dictator, and his fighting style is indicative of Boxer. That's why he looks the way he does. I mean, your criticisms aren't wrong, but I'm pretty sure THIS is why the whole thing went down the way it did.

      That’s my favorite part about his design: that’s he’s M. Bison squared.
      Be interesting to see a character who’s Vega squared. A Dictator clone with psycho power, like Ed, who’s raised and trained by Claw. Instead of claws hold down press up and punch being a horizontal claw attack it could be a psycho crusher. The roll could be replaced with scissor kick and a few other tweaks.
      But Balrog squared just doesn’t seem that interesting to me personally…

    Personally I really love Ed, and I think that there's one thing that's preventing him from hitting his full potential in-game. I know you know what it is, so let's say it together, _key frames._ I adore Ed's outfit because it creates a direct contrast with Bison's outfit, while Bison is red, direct, and practical, Ed's is blue, elaborated, and impractical. The more elaborated aspects like the lack of sleeves or the way his cap is designed to match his asymmetrical hairstyle is pretty weird but I think it fits because it feels like what a younger lad like Ed would do if given the means to design themselves an outfit like this, not really paying attention to the fact that it stops working the second he gets a haircut or what have you, or working under flawed logic of just liking no sleeves because that's how he always fought due to Balrog being his dad and teacher. Combined with the impractical aspects of his outfit like his hat which would not fit somebody as fast and mobile as him, or his cape, and it all screams to me of the kind of young person who is effectively trying to create an image for themselves as the face of this Neo-Shadaloo while highlighting the fact that he has the experience of an uncooked broccoli, especially when combined with his excellent animations which, as you said, came off as feeling like an inexperienced kid with too much power for his own good with his Psycho Power really carrying his ability to fight on account of his wilder attacks. But without Key Frames on that cape, it just looks weird. I'd much rather them have key framed it so that it highlights how Ed is fighting in spite of the impracticality of his outfit rather than against it as he seems to be with the current physics engine, which would be highlighting how he's carrying himself with his innate power more than anything.

  • @yikes6758
    @yikes6758 6 лет назад +24

    just because Neo-Shadaloo doesn't show up in SF3 doesn't mean it's not relevant; it just means that their story doesn't tie in with the illuminati story line which is the looming threat at that very moment. If neo-shadaloo is a GOOD organization that DOESN'T fight against the Illuminati, then there's no reason for pretty much any of the SF3 cast to care about it.
    That, and the series is prone to retcons. Also, have we forgotten that S.I.N. only appeared for the duration of SFIV?

    It's extremely easy to understand Ed's story, no idea why some people find it hard.
    1. Ed is Bison's clone
    2. Bison is trying to take over Ed's body
    3. Menat told Ed he would no longer be himself when he finishes growing, which is why he's skinny in his character story, he didn't finish growing yet and the Ed in gameplay is the fully/almost fully-grown Ed
    4. Menat told Ed both of them will have difficult times ahead, she's referring to Ed and Falke
    5. Ed's now trying to free other Shadaloo experiments
    6. Bison's still trying to take over Ed's body as well as Falke's body which may lead them to try and make Bison take over Ryu's body because Bison also wanted to take over his body in the past

      It's not difficult to understand his story, it's difficult to understand why it exists since it won't be relevant later in the series. Instead of connecting plot points for the entire time line, they make new ones that won't develop at all.

    • @recipeseeker
      @recipeseeker 6 лет назад +26

      That argument doesn't make sense. Ed came from SF4 (in both of Balrog's endings), became playable in SF5 and is even getting new allies becoming playable (Falke), the SFV director even outright said they have a name for the gorilla in his character story, which means we may either learn about that name during a new General Story or if that gorilla becomes playable. Everything there's already development for that plot point.
      Besides, let's not pretend Street Fighter hasn't done retcons before.

    • @thejesman
      @thejesman 6 лет назад +48

      I don't think anyone has any trouble figuring out Ed's story. The part that's hard to figure out is why any of it matters. The rapid growth thing kinda feels like a bullshit excuse to shoehorn him into the game. And again, why is he using Shadaloo's name if he's against Shadaloo? Or is he against Shadaloo? Is he supposed to be a good guy or a bad guy? There's just a lot of conflicting elements here.

    • @recipeseeker
      @recipeseeker 6 лет назад +13

      You are aware there are these things called anti-heroes and anti-villains right? He's obviously in the anti-hero category if his and Falke's arcade endings are considered. Also, using Shadaloo's name is easily justified by how the world treats them and how they can't easily escape their past or it could even be because Bison's already influencing him. Hence, they're Neo-Shadaloo, because they came from Shadaloo and acknowledge that. It matters because they're developing it but people are trying too hard to pretend it doesn't make sense.

      He didn't have to be a boxer with boxing animations just because Balrog raised him. Back when he was only in story mode I thought his fighting style would rely more on his psycho power for telekinesis-style attacks. Grabbing an object via telekinesis is most notable thing we see him do in the story mode, after all. Suddenly becoming a buff shoot boxer in military garb feels like an afterthought. As mentioned in the video, there are multiple signs that the devs didn't know what direction they wanted to take this character.

    Ed's body is aging much faster than a regular human, and since he was artificially enhanced to become the next host for Bison, he's biology was designed to also gain muscle in a quicker manner. I'm quite sure I read this on Capcom Unity post, or on the Capcom character's database website (which address I always forget for some reason xD). He was supposed to grow to a posture that would resemble Bison, Abel and Seth. I know that not all people got that, but Ed's "character story" is taking place waaaay after "A Shadow Falls" story line. He just grown a bit during that time.

  • @gato6373
    @gato6373 5 лет назад +2

    So after watching this video a couple of time my opinion regarding your points is this:
    Ed's Build: I agree that SF has way too many muscular fighters and someone who had muscles but didn't look like a bodybuilder would be nice, with that said I understand why they went with the muscular design for Ed considering his backstory and unnatural nature. I fell that making him muscular but lean would have been a good compromise.
    Color Pallete: I actually like his color pallete it fits with his military theme and the fact that he is trying to be the opposite of Bison besides that one thing that I noticed is that the reason behind the Turquoise might be because of Balrog, since uncle Balrog uses a lot of blue in basically all of his pallets new and old and Turquoise is derived from Blue so that might be one of the reasons. However one thing that I agree with you is that it all blends together way too much I think that adjusting the saturation and shades of the Turquoise and ESPECIALLY THE GOLD would make more interesting and visually pleasing. Also that black in the lapel has litteraly no reason to exist, why not something more eyecatching like a shade of violet.
    Hat,Cape and Gloves: First that Hat pisses me off it looks ridiculous when it's pointing like that I think just a regular cap would have been better. Now for the Cape this one I'm half and half, I agree that it wasn't well designed but I don't think we have to get rid of it completely. My suggestion in regards to it is to make the Cape more akin to Ezio's cape from AC, by that I mean make so that when Ed's attacking or moving that cape stays in his back and moves according to his movements (WITH KEY FRAMES PLEASE) and when he stays Idle for a long time or Taunts he would drape it over his shoulder and arm like Ezio actually does in both his own game and Soul Calibur V. Finally the gloves I think they are tad over designed, just simple fingerless gloves like the ones used in MMA would fit better with the design and that white stripe in the middle is just distracting.
    And that's my full analysis and suggestions to his design based from what I've seen and your arguments I Hope if nothing else it was at least amusing to read.

    You're a man after my own heart. These new artist can't appreciate the fundamentals of design that past 2D artist had to work in. When in the past you only had so many pixels to work with the characters had to be instantly recognizable and distinguishable from one another. This gave these artist an intrinsic understanding of design principles, "Less is more". In the advent of 3D art, modern designers just run wild with ubiquitous elements that serve new real purpose but to clutter up the character, simply because they can. No one stops to think whether they should.
    There's so much wrong with today's modern way of thinking and quite frankly It's been going on for a while now.

    Not gonna lie. Ed has grown on me, i knew ever since i saw him in story mode that he was the kid from SFIV, because he is a blonde kid following Balrog, and he has the shadaloo sign on his hand, that he uses against Guile and Zangief if i remember correctly. I always like boxers and Ed is no exception, i like his fighting style and his braggish attitude. The only thing that i fully agree in this video is about the damn clipping cape. I hate it just as much as everyone else. Ed overall at least to me, is not a bad character at all, both his story and his song make him probably one of the few SF characters with some real depth besides Sagat. For sure he became one of my top 5 favorites,but i know i am a minority and it's completely understandable.

    I think Ed's design should have been closer to this. Make him skinnier (obviously). Keep the hoodie, but make it that the sleeves are torn like balrog's hood. Have it unzipped, as well, but have a shirt on underneath it. Change his boxing gloves to a colour like blue (showing his connection to Balrog and his story progression of branching out from him). He is Balrog's pupil, so him sort of immigrating him works, but he's still an anxiety driven teenager, so he wouldn't to stand out with Balrog's exposed chest and vibrant blues, reds and golds.

  • @phosphorescenceking6114
    @phosphorescenceking6114 6 лет назад +30

    I'm not sure that it's fair to say that just because we know that the story is going towards what we see in SF3 that that means any story arc they could be creating or preparing is pointless. You could just as easily say that SF4 and SFV's stories are pointless because it's just going to go to Gill and the Illuminati eventually. There could easily be another plot involving Neo-Shadaloo in between the current point in time in SFV and Third Strike. Complaining that Ed isn't in SF3 and that makes him pointless and anything he's doing from here on out pointless is just an illogical complaint. Especially since, due to the nature of Bison bodies, he probably doesn't have a lot of time left in the story before he completely turns into the new M. Bison, which will probably happen before the Illuminati show up to start SF3. This will likely result in a plotline in which Ed is both the hero and the villain, because he'll eventually turn evil and need to be defeated.
    Also, it's not really fair to complain that Ed is muscular, because, as you pointed out, almost all the male characters in SFV are extremely muscular, and that doesn't mean that their designs are automatically bad or flawed. It may be tiring, but, similar to early JoJo characters, that's simply the style of character design in this game. It's fine to get tired of it, but just because Ed used to be skinny doesn't mean that he's somehow the only character who's design is crap because of his muscles. That's a complaint that's more suited to an overall problem with SFV's art design, not something specific to an analysis of Ed's design.
    As for Ed's design, the cape physics are certainly a problem, and there's something to be said for his color pallet, but not once did you mention why any of this would actually be included in his costume in the first place. You only complained that it didn't fit into your idea of what the character Ed would logically wear based on his upbringing and fighting style. Ed is a mostly new character who was known to exist since Balrog's SF4 ending and was further teased in the SFV story mode and character stories. In order to present a new character in a way that will allow people to latch onto what he has to do with the Street Fighter universe, it's only natural that his costume would reflect that he's a combination of Balrog and Bison, as well as Ed's ties to Shadaloo and Shadaloo's established costume design. Ed's costume reflects boxing, regal dictatorship, and it's a uniform, which reflects Ed's position as a Lieutenant in Shadaloo and as an underling of Balrog. Bison's costume also isn't something that's particularly suitable for fighting in, but it doesn't matter, because he fights with overwhelming psycho power.
    You can still complain about everything you mentioned in this video, but it's a little ridiculous to be going "why the hell is this his costume?" when the answer is pretty obvious. You could at least weigh what they were going for against unintended problems the costume design causes.

    • @blackmanwhitesuit
      @blackmanwhitesuit 6 лет назад

      I think they may start retconning things with SC6, so don't get to stuck on where SFV and SFIV sit on the timelines (we all know timelines can get messy). I agree that there is way to much emphasis on muscle this time around and sexuality on the girls side, but that's an issue too big to simply get into to. For his design, I think something that is omitted is although Ed's style is shoot boxing, he wears mama gloves, and his boxing stance is that of a defensive guard. While Balrog has more of a mike Tyson power brawler stance and Dudley has more of a classical boxing stance, Ed's stance is more akin to Floyd Mayweather jr in it being defensive and counter attack driven. On top of that the gloves are supposed to add that new age flair. I think the military outfit speaks volumes about what Ed deems as cool military gear is very childish and that fits in with his Goku like innocence mixed with his revolutionary tone.

    • @thebwarrior7410
      @thebwarrior7410 6 лет назад +5

      Phosphorescence King the problem with Ed being muscular isn’t that he’s muscular in a game with predominantly muscular men, the problem with him being that buff is that he was not that buff when you see him in story mode. To suddenly go from lean teenager to beef cake creates a disconnect. I know they explain why he’s that buff but that explanation just feels like an excuse to make him buff.
      As for Ed’s design I like it, but it doesn’t fit his character. Yes i get that they designed it so that the players understood his lineage, but we’ve already seen that you could establish a character’s lineage and still have them wear something that fits them as a character in Rock Howard. Rock has a style separate from terry’s and geese’s while connecting to the two through his powers. His outfit doesn’t say as much about him as a character as it does about who raised him.

    • @phosphorescenceking6114
      @phosphorescenceking6114 6 лет назад

      The La-Rode show Are you saying Ed's outfit doesn't fit him as a character? How? I understand the problems with the color scheme, and the cape just gets in the way of the animations, but at what point was a logical argument made as for why Ed's costume might go against his character? That wasn't part of the video. I was only pointing out pros to the costume and arguing against the idea that his costume must be designed completely around his style of boxing or that having a shoulder cape doesn't make sense for a character who fights with both practical fisticuffs and cheating psycho power. He is a high ranking shadaloo officer with a unique uniform design that shares elements of Balrog and Bison, as well as being unique enough to establish this as Ed's own design, which is how Falke can borrow elements from both Cammy's design as a doll and Ed's design as a shadaloo soldier.
      Also, I'm aware that people were disappointed that he became buff in gameplay because he wasn't buff before, but disappointment is not a valid criticism of design. You can only judge it for what it is, not what you wanted or expected it to be. Disappointment is a valid complaint if you're saying Capcom was leading people on to think Ed was gonna be something that the wasn't, but it's not a valid complaint for saying Ed's eventual design is bad or good. Also, his rapid aging was already established before he became buff. It's not like Quiet from MGSV who was made to wear a bikini as her design priority and then given an excuse in the story that she breathes through her skin. Not to blame Quiet's design or anything, I really like Quiet's design. A lot more than Ed, which I don't like that much, but fair is still fair, and pros need to be addressed if cons are going to be addressed.

    • @phosphorescenceking6114
      @phosphorescenceking6114 6 лет назад

      I have to agree with that actually. I think that the best thing for Ed's design is a reflection of how his body is already an adult's but his mind is still young. I think he actually should've had a full blown superhero cape instead of just the glitchy shoulder cape to show that childishness.

    I definitely agree with you storywise, too - I dunno where they're going with this. Maybe they're remaking SF3? Maybe it's a setup for another in-between game where Ed's pals play an important role? Maybe they're here for a second cinematic story mode? It's hard to tell both what they're for and what their intentions are. They all look like villains and are set up as a boss squad the way the four kings were, but they all seem nice and are way too unimposing and young, so is it just gonna be a bad story where the heroes misunderstand them and come into conflict that way? Will Bison take over Ed and make him and his cohorts do villainous stuff? It's so hard to tell at this point. Unless G is an iluminati character and not just some random comedy magician this season won't have any progress on fleshing out the Illuminati either.

    I wish more things adopted the SNK style of costume design where lots of the characters outfits are maybe slightly flashier than normal street clothes. SF outfits for the most part like to be super in your face about emphasizing what the gimmick or archetype of the character is. i get that they want someone to at a glance be able to discern what a character is but sometimes they can be a bit much. Meanwhile Tekken takes the peacock approach of making decent looking but overly flashy and elaborate outfits for the default costumes. (think Heihachi's orange pimp vest in Tekken 7) I've always been a fan of how a good chunk of SNK characters costumes could easily be things they wear every day or that they could just as easily be going out clubbing rather than entering a martial arts tournament, and i think that gives nice personality to the characters because it feels like an everyday wardrobe that the character consciously chose because of their personal tastes rather than a flashy costume not unlike what you would see on Monday Night Raw made to sell a gimmick or angle to a crowd.

  • @Hussuki
    @Hussuki 6 лет назад

    As a lore buff, his story was a huge shock to me. Given his origins and who raised him, without context, I figured he was about that villainy life from the jump. However, after learning more about his character and his noble intentions I understand now that he is, essentially, the child that doesn't want to follow in their parents footsteps but holds their upbringing close to who they are instead of casting it out. I've actually met a lot of people throughout my lifetime who are exactly like that. Sure they didn't really question their upbringing or their parent's parenting, but they didn't let it define them as a person and chose a path, usually completely opposite, of their own in life and became better people. While also, still retaining some of the family's ideals, morals, behaviors, traits, culture, etc. It didn't seem like Ed didn't like Balrog even though they split ways. In fact, he retained a fighting style similar to his "father's" and since he has psycho powers, why not use them for a greater cause?
    His plot can go many ways and I have two ideas on where it can go. The first being that it will come into play AFTER the Illuminati arc in SF6. Like you mentioned, nothing about Ed exists in the SF3 timeline and, of course, you can't rewrite history on that matter since SF3 already happened. They can introduce his arc in the next SF as the main antagonistic group after the fall of Gill and the Illuminati. In which, their group, now much larger with many Psycho babies in their ranks, wish to overthrow the government deeming it unfit or something like that. Or the second in which his organization will play, sort of a supportive role, to the main cast in SF6. Sort of like an Avengers kind of thing in SF6 in which they help the main protagonist of that game achieve their goals. The reason for this, being that his group is on a search and rescue cause to find other Psycho babies and recruit them into their family. Their paths crossing with the protagonist because the antagonist may be another one of them, but is wreaking F.A.N.G levels of chaos with Bison levels of power.
    Either way, his and Falke's story has just begun to unravel and I have hopes that Capcom will, hopefully, give him a better design then,Seriously, that stupid arm cape, and tilted hat GOT TO GO!!!! And also make his prescience in the next game not lazily relevant.

    • @NinjaWorldWarrior16
      @NinjaWorldWarrior16 6 лет назад

      SFV will get a 2nd cinematic story at some point, this is where Neo Shadaloo will be important. And Gill and his organisation don't prove themselves in SFIII at all, they don't even get destroyed, meaning the Illuminati arc doesn't end in 3rd Strike. So anything can happen. I think the Illuminati and SFIII chars will play a major part in SFVI, or SFV may get the 3rd story which will focus on them and then SFVI will open a whole new arc.

    I mean, SFIII takes place not too long after SFV's general story ends, so maybe Neo Shadaloo was being established while the whole Illuminati stuff was going on. And it has no real direct relation to the characters in III since they're just saving other former Shadaloo experiments from captivity, so it could have gone on in the background as a subplot.
    I do agree with the gripes on his costume. His story costume with the sleeveless hoodie fit him better, and I think it would have been better to work onto that design for a more casual and less militaristic look, since "casual" and "laid back" fit his personality more than a uniform, considering he never even wore a uniform while he still worked under Balrog.

    Even if the hoodie is uninspired, I'm still a sucker for it. I like my clothing simple.

      same. It's a simple, clean, unobstructed look one would expect for a boxer/fighter. Just say it's training gear.

    I think his outfit looks like something Ubisoft would design, it's almost like something from the older Assassin's Creed games. Just add a hood, sleeves and change the primary color to white and accents to red

    The white hoodie was perfect for Ed. He's was nobody.

    In the Ruby critique video you said you were a fan of all the franchises featured in Cross Tag, you think we'll see any Under Night characters in Design Shop videos soon?

    See I could imagine the Ed as the more skinny but still toned kid still in his training hoodie and sweatpants be a nice character to have. Only to also have the same kid using that psycho powers to make him just be pure raw power but still trying to develop his technique. It would be nice to have that kind of narrative you could of build up to the Ed we have in game and also have someone like Ed be able to push around these walking pillars of muscles of men as this scrawny kid that got some moves from Balrog.

    What do you think about his battle costume? The one where he's got the jacket on the back (Ignoring cloth physics, of course) I main Ed, so I'm curious.
