Great video, thanks for sharing. but I'd like to point out a couple things, FANG is not only extremely well designed, but from his outfit, looks, to his movements, everything looks highly FAMILIAR to anyone with a deep chinese background (not limited to China) -- everything about FANG was based on real references. I'll try to explain more below. Whoever designed this character certainly did quite some research. First, his appearances -- outfit, facial hair, and sunglasses, is a perfect representation of a eunuch from the late Qing dynasty where there was already influences from the West. Most of us were quickly reminded of the assassin duo in the kungfu hustle. these looks were commonly seen back then, and are depicted in lots tv shows which set the era around the same period. The sunglass fashion only appeared in the late qing dynasty era from the influence of the western culture. Sleeves. One of the first things you notice about him might be his awkward sleeves, AND the way he flaps them. Not only was this outfit based on the eunuchs back then, but in the Qing dynasty (even though these weren't only existing in this very era), when a eunuch went to meet the emperor, he'd have to swipe and slap his sleeves before kneeling (The way they slapped the sleeves was also pretty unique. I'd need to find some clips to better describe it.) This is to show 3 things: 1. respect to the emperor, 2. that they weren't hiding weapons underneath, and 3. no money hidden in them as a symbolic gesture to show that they weren't "corrupt" -- as many of them in high positions were. Also, many traditional dance moves involved such sleeves too. Moves. Again, I absolutely marveled at FANG's body movements when I first saw the character -- his s.HK, in particular, where he does this almost exaggerated dance-like double knee attack, was most certainly NOT created out of pure imagination. You could see similar movements in many traditional dances, tv shows, deity parades, lion dances...etc. Poison. This is a common element in the drama plots -- almost a cliche sometimes. Occasionally there would be a mysterious figure like FANG who possessed such abilities, either assassin techniques or supernatural powers, that involved poisonous effects, and only the assassin or certain herbs would be able to heal the victim. This stereotype has been used in multiple japanese games, with one of the most notable example being Lin (麟) in KOF 2000 and on, who was also one of my favorite villain characters in the fighting game history, though sadly the story line got completely obliterated after the (2nd?) downfall of SNK and the 4 assassins quickly turned to shit. but that's a different topic so I'm not gonna elaborate here. Voice. As mentioned, FANG's design was largely based on eunuchs back then. And to become a eunuch, one'd have to chop "it" off, you know, the eggs and sausage breakfast. Eunuchs had to live in emperor's palace where there were lots female servants -- the ones who were literally hand-picked as they were required to be pretty. And we all know what happens when a ton of beautiful single girls happen to live in your area and want to meet you around a lonely man. Things would get messy with that kind of orgies going around on a daily basis. So they just had to chop it clean off before they could become a eunuch. And you know the consequence of losing your manhood and all that sweet sweet testosterone -- your voice starts to sound like FANG. This is another proof that FANG has a eunuch reference and the designer did research on it. Also, in many ancient chinese dramas, eunuchs were often depicted to be cunning and sly, always plotting to stab someone in the back. Some of them even possess kungfu and assassin skills too..
F.A.N.G. was oddly one of the only new comers I actually loved. Yes he's weird, but he actually has an interesting character to him. And like you said, he actually contributes to the story.
When I first saw F.A.N.G I loved it. And understood the design right away. I think most people that hate FANG takes the design of the character of street fighter too seriously like they are real people. They supposed to have a cartoonish look. FANG is awesome in his own personal way.
I think that’s what how most of the fighting game community felt like, they treated these characters as if their real to them and are invested on their character. And then, get butthurt when their expectations didn’t match their ideals about them. Good example here is Paul Phoenix, I still love him despite how he was portrayed goofy in the later installments I mean I can see he’s powerful at his own merit, then there those guys who tried to defend him that they rather have a serious Paul Phoenix when he was per-say legit. Sometimes you can’t win all the battles, when you’re creating a fighting game character.
This series is wonderful, dude. And thank you for illuminating why F.A.N.G. is a great villain and does exactly what he is designed to. (acronym, not anagram) Keep up the good work!!
Agreed. I thought FANG was a massive ball drop and a clone of the Thin Men from XCOM on reveal but it really grew on me over time. The venomous reptile and insect references (snake, toad, scorpion and wasp), everything just screamed poison villain type. I actually like the over sized costume sleeves as they're just obvious toxin sacs, like a wasps abdomen or scorpion stinger.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves F.A.N.G. Despite the fact that his back story is disturbing in multiple ways, he far and away has one of the coolest, and beautiful designs out of all of Street Fighter.
Another interesting thing is that FANG has a lot of oppressive, advantageous on block moves but low overrall damage, which reinforces the "irritating" aspect of his character... The problem with this decision is that his ability to steal wins is very low, which makes him bad in a competitive setting (and the fact that his V-Triggers are A.S.S.)
My only issue with FANG is the way AKI describes him in SF6, he seems like he'd be a calm, stoic, serious, terrifying snd imposing presence. A man of few words who will end anyone who gets in his way. She talks about him like he's Kazuya or Akuma, but then you look at him in the gameplay and story and he's this
When the game was coming out, I knew I was going to play FANG just based on his design. And I did, I love the character. Helps that his japanese voice is no other than Shigeru Chiba (voice of Buggy in One Piece and many others)

*super* late to the party, but I will say that all his moves being two-hit has another more gameplay-oriented reason. Two hits means twice the hitstun or blockstun, and Fang wants to waste as much of his opponent's time as possible to maximize his poison.
I came to SF5 for FANG, he sold me as a character mostly with his design, but also wish his personality and role in the Story Mode when it came out. I LOVED him, I even learnt how to cross-up with him! Unfortunately, I just didn't perform well with him, at all. That was some great analysis! I never pieced together the whole "2" thing with him, that's super interesting. Also, I'm glad to hear a defense for Fang, I always love weirdo characters (Abigail is my spirit animal, and I love him), so the extremely loud outburst of people asking for "cool" characters every time Capcom gives us a new weirdo really bums me out. My only complaint with Fang is his name, I can't NOT say it as Fang instead of Fung, or Fong, or however it's apparently ACTUALLY supposed to be pronounced. But more than that, why is his name an anagram? Does it ever explain why he's F.A.N.G instead of just Fang?
Yo, as the first video of yours I’ve watched, this is AMAZING. This has given me a LOT to think about in character animation and storytelling in various existing franchises and my own projects I hope to make.
The second I saw F.a.n.g I knew I would love him! Hes so much fun to use and his character is really fun....now if only Capcom would care more about him and give us fans some merch and more cool costumes :)
Could F.A.N.G's design have been better received if they had managed to make his sleeves work "normally" as in the concept art ? Having these huge, rigid cones at the end of his arms feels like the only real weak point of his costume.
Great analysis once again. I think F.A.N.G is a success in making a character you love to hate, and I respect that. I can't play him to save my life, but I appreciate how his moves fit his nature, and even fighting him, you just get the feeling he's annoying as heck, so something's definitely working. Second favorite Street Fighter character! Hehe. He's funny! Weird but funny but all that hides a dangerous assassin. Reminds me of Lemongrab from Adventure time because of his obsession to keep things perfect and gets upset when things didn't go according to plan.
You make alot of great points. It's also to be noted especially in alot of anime, the japanese love to present the trope of a character that appears very deceptively weak but is very dangerous.
I looove FANG, at this point its possibly the only thing i like about sf5. Very sad to ponder, due to FANGs apparent reception he may never get another birth in a SF again.
Purple in Japan is the color of death and the no. 4 as him being the new 4th King is also representative of death. This all plays very well with his in-game design and gameplay (also what's pretty meta is 2+2=4... that's like - *TWICE* the 2's!!), especially partnered with his eerie, yet fluent, vulture - like movement, mystery and health chipping, toxin mechanic. Aesthetically and narratively; this character is brilliant!!
Fun fact: Rufus technology came first but Bob appeared in games first. So making them rivals in the SxT game was a no brainer. It's crazy to think that Rufus was Fat Acceptance before Fat Acceptance became a thing. So many signs we ignored.😮💨
I've kinda always wondered about his name too. Ever since his 1st introduction trailer and subsequent release, all the other characters and narrator all seem to pronounce his name as "FONG" not "FANG". As for the acronym.....the only "F.A.N.G." that I ever knew of was from GI*Joe ARAH. The old Cobra "F.A.N.G." (Fully Armored Negator Gyrocopter) toy. Weird SF names seem to always be a present staple of the series. Like Urien in SF3....I still often ponder about if his name was actually supposed to be "Orion".
In chinese and most asian languages, the A is a cardinal vowel. It sounds like the "u" in "up" instead of the "a" in "apple". When a doctor asks you to open your mouth and say "ah", that's what it is. It sounds like "fong", but mostly because english rarely uses this A sound. Also, fun fact. Urien was Julien and Rolento was Lawrence.
I don't know if anyone pointed it out, but even his laughter has the number two in it. "Nihahaha!"
"Ni" is the japanese word for two.
And when ge beats himself he will say the imposter was 2 millimeters too short. And calls Alex Shadaloo Test Body 222222.
Im surprised you didn’t bring up Jiang Shi vampires from Chinese folklore. His design and movements are reminiscent of them: purple robe, poisoned nails, long sleeves, hat, odd movements. All they were missing was a talisman and we would have Hsien Ko’s wierd uncle.

¿Im the only one want shout "Medic!“ when i see this guy?
When I did play that game, I loved Fang. I love his snake style. That's it.
I clicked on this video thinking, oh great, now this professional animation major will criticize my favorite character, only to absolutely rejoice when you revealed that you actually loved the fella, as much as I, easiest subscribe I’ve ever had
F.A.N.G = Friggin Awesome Ninja Guy
I know he's not really a ninja but I mean it fits :P Great video like always
Friggin Awesome Nuerotoxin guy
Friggin Annoying Nitpicking Guy ?
Friggin Awesome Neurotic Guy?
The teachings of ninjitsu originated from China so you are technically right
Friendly And Nice Guy
You made me appreciate this character, thanks man.
Now that you've shown me what he is? This guy's great!
Great analysis. I would love to see one of these for A.K.I.
That Dazzler shade was uncalled for. She's better than Hawkeye. *Sips tea*
Second favorite Street Fighter character! Hehe.
He's funny! Weird but funny but all that hides a dangerous assassin. Reminds me of Lemongrab from Adventure time because of his obsession to keep things perfect and gets upset when things didn't go according to plan.
FANG’s poison hand is definitely inspired by Baki the grappler. There’s a villain who gained poison hands by doing the same training as FANG at 3:13.
You've convinced me
*_Is this Waluigi's Lost Relative?_*
You make alot of great points. It's also to be noted especially in alot of anime, the japanese love to present the trope of a character that appears very deceptively weak but is very dangerous.
I swear to god I've subbed to you 5 times now
Now I'm interested on your reaction to A.K.I
Not to mention his theme is fire AF
The usage of Bravely Default OST was perfect
it was killing me where I knew it from
Buster and it's even the "scumbag" theme ;D
Indeed
FANG is great especially after the cinematic story
you don't have to like fang. but man that fucking theme song.
F.A.N.G is adorable
Fantastic
Asian
Notorious
Gang
F.a.n.g is the humanized normal version of Hsien-No & Xaio Lon.
Ever since his 1st introduction trailer and subsequent release,
all the other characters and narrator all seem to pronounce his name as "FONG" not "FANG".
Bin Shimada has such a range that he can play him goofy or more serious like in 6.
It's also noted that in Japan (not sure about China) that purple represents death like white. At least phonetically.
8:53 Not to be that guy, but I think you meant acronym, not anagram.
I liked FANG the second I saw him. I guess I'm a terrible person, but now I understand why.
