Necalli was doomed when Capcom decided to make the story mode one single story with one possible outcome. Since Necalli is supposed to kill every opponent he wins against, and the story has to keep everyone alive for the sequels, he simply could not canonically beat anyone.
I disagree, he could beat someone and as he's trying to devour his prey, someone could save them by grabbing his attention, or distracting him to give Necalli a more "Oh shit, this guy's a big scary problem that could pop up anywhere" kind of feel. He could have been the pyramid head of the series and brought a horror element to a crisis that was giving the Earth ROLLING BLACKOUTS FOR FUCKS SAKE. There could have even been scripted moments in which he starts the fight in V-Trigger and he's just impossible to beat, like Shin Necalli to give the player a sense of his power. He was just mishandled into being a jobber, and it's sad because like the video says, we all had very high expectations for him.
Carl Bloke Capcom's SFV:AE correlation chart: imgur.com/mROsScG. Notice it doesn't mention Necalli being murdered nor it says his status is unknown, meaning he's 100% still alive.

Bison does not appear in SFIII.
If I wrote up Necali, I'd have made him a huuuge wild card in the story mode and allow him to start devouring the souls of several major characters before being finally laid low in the ending just before the final assault on Shadaloo, releasing the souls of everybody devoured and allowing the cast to make a massive assault on Shadaloo united.
Yeah. Though if they had a street fighter 6, that would be how I would use him, only rather than him going up against shadaloo, more him being the ultimate wild card that throws the entire plans of the Illuminati and a reborn bison(probably through edd or one of the other psycho power clones) into jeopardy. Him crushing and absorbing a previously all powerful Gil after he was originally defeated in sf 3(since 4 and 5 are set prior to 3), causing the Illuminati to suddenly pivot their plans from world domination to simply trying to stop the now all powerful ancient warrior from destroying everything they had built. Using his ability to consume the other fighters souls to add extra tension as he works his way towards his main targets. Those being Gil, ryu, and a reborn bison, with dahlson being taken near the beginning as a result of both age and him being already exhausted by the efforts of the Illuminati to ensure he does not interfere. Eventually he is defeated and the souls of the consumed fighters released, though he does not die, but is instead sealed away, forced to remain imprisoned for hopefully a long time.

Necalli's problem is that he appeared at a place in the story where he couldn't shine. I've seen someone in the comments explain that he couldn't kill anyone and I agree because SFV's canon must set-up Street Fighter 3 so some characters were bound to survive. However, if the game was set AFTER SF3, Necalli's purpose of being this ancient emissary of the gods that wakes up every hundred years would perfectly fit after Illuminati's fall : two powerful entities have been destroyed by powerful and virtuous warriors, what better time to hunt and devour ? Which is why Ogre was so effective (until the retcon) in Tekken 3 : a bunch of characters got replaced by new ones and the reason was him : Ogre killed them and now they had to answer to him. Ogre was so mysterious but absolutely frightening and while I never liked True Ogre, it added an extra layer of "what the hell even is that thing" to him. Necalli is great, great design, cool animations and personality experessed through his fighting style but god was the story mode a wasted potential.
I haven't seen a second Story Mode confirmed anywhere aside from X-Kira's datamining but if it does happen to come out, I hope it'll focus more on Necalli as the antagonist it should've been as well as focus on the beginning of New Shadaloo and Illuminati getting more power.

I feel like the writers of the SFV story mode came up with the whole thing before Necalli was made, then they just had to find places to shoehorn him in, which sucks, because: like you said in the video, he has so much potential to be the coolest!
hey, first am not fan of SFV writing but it look like they made Necalli in mind when they writing the story and there even a reason why Necalli been weak in the story. well it all about his Prologue, we know that to Necalli to become stronger he need to take the stronger souls and as I understand he need to devour first Ruy's soul then Dhalsim and finally M.bison but the mistake that happen is Necalli face Ruy AND Dahlsim in the same time so Prophecy never happen, so that why Necalli goes from cool to poor at least in my opinion.
I thought of him as the link between Satsui no Hado and Psycho Power. He is the ancestor of both powers and they eventually split, but he has the strength of both.
These SFV videos really make me appreciate how much I love the Street Fighter designs, while not super in love with the gameplay, some characters are really amazing at conveying personality and style
Necalli's writing makes the (Jojo's) piller man look like shakspear's level of writing i shouldn't have been suprised since capcoms writing wasn't the most intelligent
It's weird, isn't it? I mean they're freaking GENIUSES when it comes to conceptualizing a character. But the only people in the game that actually have something intriguing going on is Zeku, Cody and G. You could put everyone else in the game in ski masks and just make them masked thugs and you wouldn't lose a thing. XD
Wahmuu is kinda well written... Kars has a little deep too. Araki dropped the ball with ACDC and Santana. But overall the Aztecs Gods of Fitness were pretty good.
So glad you addressed his whole story arc issue. They really just beat his ass in the story. The one scene where they were running from him, should've been how he was during the story the whole time. If you think about it, Ryu didn't destroy Necalli, bad writing did. Oh well I suppose. Hopefully a sequel or crossover will do him justice.
Necalli was one of the coolest-looking new, ultimate-badassery characters and I was thrilled he would be the new 'evil boss' of the game. All that changed once he started talking -_- (still love his design though!)
NECALLI IS COOL AS SHIT but you're dead on about his character being squandered. It's a total shame as he was the character that made me interested in SFV.
I 100% agree with you that he had so much potential to be the new antagonist, he could have been one of the reasons why Bison is gone in SF3. When I first saw him I thought he would be the new main boss of the game that you could only gain access to him by defeating the Story mode (which the game didn't had at the beginning lol). So yeah overall, great character design and potentially good story, as well for a better fighting style.
Thank you for this! I'm so Damn Glad you brought up those creative Flaws for Necalli! He's such a Kickass Character, but boy did I not expect for Capcom to Screw him up so badly in story mode!
Yeah, totally feeling you. When I first saw Necalli in SFV, my first thought was 'whoa, I wanna play this guy! He's like Blanka gone all Akuma!' I still like using him, and I think he's a fantastic design, but in the game's story he's a non-sequitur.
It blows my mind that the Story Mode went in this entirely different direction with the character (psychological horror..?) when he tries hunting the main cast. He should've definitely been the game's Akuma storywise, as in make him hunt either Ryu, or Bison, not the entire cast. It's another reason why Capcom should've worked with UDON comics to make the story mode not a sad cringefest. What bugs me the most though is that none of his liquifying abilities even show up in his gameplay (hopefully he gets something for his V-Skill tho), and his sheep illusion nightmare would've made for a terrifyingly awesome take on a Raging Demon if it had less talking.
Necalli had so much potential to be a good antagonist, maybe even a main villain. But his purpose in the story had no effort and he barely appeared. He also kills his opponents when he wins, and since its a prequel, the characters had to survive. I hope he returns again (as in the story, he melted into goo, but they can always resurrect him) and can truly shine as a main antagonist or a secondary antagonist. He's anger, hunger, greed and evil personified. So much potential for a subplot or character arc of a main character, where necalli can serve as the main antagonist as he represents inner struggle and demons within.
Love the designer workshop videos man, huge fan, at first when you were ripping into MKX I was taken aback, but you're content and breakdown of the flaws are both hilarious and insightful on how characters should be designed. Keep em coming, I look forward to more installments in the series.
This video gave me a little nostalgia. I used to main Necalli back in 2018. What a character, I agree, he deserved more than what he had in the story mode.
There were two ways Necalli's story could have gone. 1) Be a tribal practicer of the satsui no hadou and how its final form won't be a perfect warrior but a savage animal. 2) Tie him into the god pantheon that Gill, G, and Ingrid make up. Maybe he's an agent of that order.
@sugarpunch Design Works i Strongly agree with you about keeping Necalli background a mystery or just making him the new akuma in SFV. But i feel the same way that necalli was wasted in story mode. Btw good choose using pillarmen BGM.
Meanwhile with Ogre from Tekken 3: He killed King I, Jun (presumably), put Baek into a coma and is at the center of Tekken's 3 plot and the sole reason Heihachi is doing the tournament. Jun's absence affects Jin for his whole life and she could have prevented him from starting WW3. Design wise Necali may be more interesting, but story wise Ogre wins, no doubt.
My former main. After fucking around in the training mode, I think you were wrong about theV trigger. Most of his attacks with dialogue are changed to feral growl and yells
Since the Illuminati was in the story, I feel it could’ve interesting if Necalli was some ancient being of chaos meant to throw a wrench in the their plan while just burning everything to the ground
Why can’t the V-Trigger be both a wild bestial rage that becomes a controlled stream of violence and aggression. Apex predators don’t flail haphazardly at prey, they take prey down in focused attacks that end with them on top as quickly as possible.
I like to imagine that Necalli in V is just a sneak peak of him for later games. This is just his introduction where people are more focused on Bison than him and don't care about Necalli because they don't think he's important in the situation at hand. But with Bison out of the way, Necalli's time to shine approaches... *...AND I DOUBT HE'S GONNA BE UNIMPORTANT.* The dude's literally Street Fighter's Pillar Man!
Feels like another missed opportunity for Crapcom not to have used him in MVC Infinite since he plays like an ideal stand-in for Wolverine or Sabertooth after they couldn't put X-Men in it and we made a big fuss over that. Plus his design works just fine in a Marvel crossover more then when they put C-Viper in MvC3.
With him breaking through a ruin of his people and sees more, lesser members' corpses of his time frozen in the walls. Necalli: (Ancient chanting and hand movements) Time is now-now-now. (Releases some souls to the members' corpses, Necalli arises looking more tame and controlled) *Hear my words, you have found your new selves, ready to live again. Now... AWAKEN FROM YOUR SLUMBER!* (The corpses come to life, ready to fight with Necalli and against the grown modern world to reclaim their kingdom)
I don't know about anyone else but I always saw Necalli as a "weapon" in the FF7 sense, an entity brought forth by the planet to defend it self in time of need, he was just the weakest one so the first sent out
Coming back to this like I regularly do (and not entirely sure if anyone notices comments on vids this old) but consider that Capcom had a second chance to really push Necalli with AE, a Shin Necalli could have done WONDERS to make him scary again, a terrifyingly overpowered boss version that can just show up in arcade mode and wipe the floor with you! Instead... While not recieving a shin form per-say, Capcom apparently considers "the boss" of SFV as a whole... G! G? R-Really? I mean I like G, a lot! I guess he has his own home stage for boss fights? But this was meant to be NECALLI'S game and they gave up on him MID-GAME? In hindsight, it's quite similiar to how they gave up on pushing Viper the second Juri came into existance, but still, wish he was handeled better, I thought he had something.
I hope he gets a second chance in street fighter 6 like Ed honestly, I feel he’d really with the drive system as well as a new take on his V trigger via a level 2
Oh man… oh man…! I completely forgot about the stupid sheep form at the beginning of story mode! I love Necalli's design, and utterly loath how he was treated by the story. He's rendered completely pointless, and I wouldn't wish that on a character I *didn't* like.
Don't get your hopes up for Necalli's return. He got obliterated by Akuma in his story mode! That said, I liked this analysis. I'm looking forward for the rest of the newcomers!
So why was he represented as a lamb in Charlie's vision? It's certainly ironic thematically. Almost seems as though they had a character SO interesting, that they didn't even know what to do with him other than shit the bed with his story.
3:43 did you just hecking reference jojo? maybe you should take a look at all star battle and eyes of heaven then, because the games animations are packed with so many references
I doubt that, they know it's Q's concept that nothing is known about him. And even Q being G's Story Costume doesn't say much, as we know nothing about G other than him being a President, but even then lots of questions remain.

He's my favorite character. Hate how they screwed him over in story.
A weekly video series? AWESOME!
Since the Illuminati was in the story, I feel it could’ve interesting if Necalli was some ancient being of chaos meant to throw a wrench in the their plan while just burning everything to the ground
Necalli was a cool character that
Got screwed over
NinjaWorldWarrior16
Yeah when snk makes svc chaos 2
daniel spell
No, I mean in SFV. It will have more than one story mode.
We expected Kars but got Santana. At least, for now anyways.
Why can’t the V-Trigger be both a wild bestial rage that becomes a controlled stream of violence and aggression. Apex predators don’t flail haphazardly at prey, they take prey down in focused attacks that end with them on top as quickly as possible.
Necalli has a lot of potential, I just hope there's something very relevant about him. It's because of him that I'm playing
I like to imagine that Necalli in V is just a sneak peak of him for later games. This is just his introduction where people are more focused on Bison than him and don't care about Necalli because they don't think he's important in the situation at hand.
But with Bison out of the way, Necalli's time to shine approaches...
*...AND I DOUBT HE'S GONNA BE UNIMPORTANT.*
The dude's literally Street Fighter's Pillar Man!
As someone who wishes to be a game designer one day, I am happy to be getting these weekly for a while.
Mysterious, overpowered character that gets defeated easily
Necalli is Santana
That Pillar Man theme.
I love these types of vids
i love to see to do the same withe the newcomers in tekken 7 too.
Wow how embarrassing i wrote "withe" instead "with"
Nice move set, awesome theme, and a badass V-Trigger + Critical Art! Who is he?
It's Sheep Mud Man!
...
The lore ruins everything about him...
Necalli should’ve been Akuma.
Necalli was Blanka.
When the jojo reference came I thought my alarm went off
Feels like another missed opportunity for Crapcom not to have used him in MVC Infinite since he plays like an ideal stand-in for Wolverine or Sabertooth after they couldn't put X-Men in it and we made a big fuss over that. Plus his design works just fine in a Marvel crossover more then when they put C-Viper in MvC3.
3:05 these two changes are at odds with each other
damn that music you dropped at 4:00
Reminds me of Heracles from Stay night
*Awaken my masters*
If the next Street Fighter takes place AFTER Gill's defeat, I think it'll be Necalli's time to shine.
With him breaking through a ruin of his people and sees more, lesser members' corpses of his time frozen in the walls.
Necalli: (Ancient chanting and hand movements)
Time is now-now-now. (Releases some souls to the members' corpses, Necalli arises looking more tame and controlled)
*Hear my words, you have found your new selves, ready to live again. Now...
AWAKEN FROM YOUR SLUMBER!*
(The corpses come to life, ready to fight with Necalli and against the grown modern world to reclaim their kingdom)
I don't know about anyone else but I always saw Necalli as a "weapon" in the FF7 sense, an entity brought forth by the planet to defend it self in time of need, he was just the weakest one so the first sent out
the use of the Pillarmen theme was very nice
*AWAKEN MY MASTERS*
Neccali is one of the coolest creations SFV ever made same as akuma
One of the coolest CONCEPTS, not creations
3:42 WAS THAT A MOTHERFUCKING JOJOS REFERENCE??????
You want an eye-catching character ruined by bad writing A.B.I, look up “Infinite the Jackal” from “Sonic Forces”…
Not a bad idea using the piller man theme.
Oh man… oh man…! I completely forgot about the stupid sheep form at the beginning of story mode!
I love Necalli's design, and utterly loath how he was treated by the story. He's rendered completely pointless, and I wouldn't wish that on a character I *didn't* like.
4:00-4:10 I have to be honest, that would be kick ass.
Don't get your hopes up for Necalli's return. He got obliterated by Akuma in his story mode!
That said, I liked this analysis. I'm looking forward for the rest of the newcomers!
Can I just say kens sfV design is my favorite
3:43 *Pillar Men theme plays in video about Necalli*
PERFECTION.
I’m not sure what key frames are but this game really needs them.
When you activate Necallis v trigger his hair reminds me of super sayian
Mannn you are so right.I feel the same.
Pillar man is too perfect
Ive been thinking about Q since the very moment I played it back at my mall's arcade.
I know I'm late to the party, but to add to Necalli getting shafted he got killed by Akuma! The guy he was supposed to replace!
So why was he represented as a lamb in Charlie's vision? It's certainly ironic thematically. Almost seems as though they had a character SO interesting, that they didn't even know what to do with him other than shit the bed with his story.
3:43
did you just hecking reference jojo?
maybe you should take a look at all star battle and eyes of heaven then, because the games animations are packed with so many references
Nicalli is a beast
I thought he was a primial akuma who lost control of the hado. They could have some dank lines with Akuma
I expected more from Necalli.
Dat Chun-li Battle Costume bishoujo
3:42 on repeat
Cool that you mentioned Q talking about how canon can ruin a character backstory, cause with this G guy now they will just ruin Q's lack of story.
I doubt that, they know it's Q's concept that nothing is known about him. And even Q being G's Story Costume doesn't say much, as we know nothing about G other than him being a President, but even then lots of questions remain.
What's the first/djent song is in that background of this video?
the second in the video theme fits necalli
AWAKEN MY FIGHTAS
The Majin Buu of street fighter
I love Necally, he is like a Berserk but a lot more cooler
Interesting how SFV conveys the idea of going Super Saiyan in a more impactful way than Dragon Ball Fighterz.
Is that the Pillarmen theme I hear?
3:43 what song is that
The Pillar Man theme from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.
