Missed a couple massive points here. 1. Starting with 2024MY, the BRZ now gets Subaru's Eyesight system even in manual transmission cars. (This also applies to the WRX.) 2. This a new gen thing, but there's a button in the glovebox to flip between TPMS sets of you have 2 sets of wheels. 3. Also a new gen thing, but the old 2.0l had a big torque dip right at the shift point. While the 2.4l did add a bit of overall power, the biggest difference is no longer having that torque dip. Way more noticeable when driving old and new back to back. I love these new BRZs, such a wonderful car.
9:50 also on that, UK GR86 owner here. The traction control button situation has a few cool features behind it. Simply tapping the traction control button does not turn it off, it puts you in a separate mode that keeps traction control off if you remain under 30mph. Generally used for a 'burn out' or race start, as soon as you exceed 30mph, traction control comes back on. To keep it off, like the track mode button, you need to hold it down for 3 seconds. - just a cool little feature behind it, you wouldn't be able to tell if the car is stationary.
Love my ‘22 BRZ Premium. Picked it up six months back with 8k miles for $24k (traded in at the dealership I work at and bought it at cost). It’s been my daily up in New England and I’m still smitten. Was considering upgrading to a tS but this video convinced me stick with my Premium
I just bought a 2024 GR86 MT, premium, in Neptune blue. I wanted the BRZ at first, but the GR86 had a better-looking front bumper and more playful suspension. OMG. If you're thinking about it, do it. It's a little slow, but it handles like a Porsche, and it's fast enough to be fun. I love this car more than any car I've had.
I ordered a BRZ yesterday. I’ll get it in two weeks. I’m very excited. They gave me 18,000 dollars for my RAV4. I’ll pay 360 dollars monthly for five years. It is my first sports car and I got a manual transmission. I got this car about ten days ago. It’s beautiful! It’s also a babe magnet. If I weren’t terrified of pretty girls I’d be in business. What do you say to a pretty girl?
Just passed 2 years of ownership and hope you love it as much as I do mine. It is an amazing sports car. I stayed in front of C7 Corvette on twisty mountain road!
This is why the car exists; punches your ticket to a world that is unfortunately being regulated away (and what's left has paper clout chasers saying their turbo automatic AWD is "much faster 0-60 bro"). I love the manual transmission, RWD, coupe combination with a good power to weight ratio: it's just fun. Personally, when I see them on the road I think it's much more likely that's an interesting person than high probability NPCs in a RAV4 (no offense lol - I get it makes sense). That is quite affordable considering the warranty means you only need a maintenance budget. I don't know the depreciation curves on these but I will be absolutely shocked if it's not as good/better than everything available under $60k new. The manual transmission + super light weight is something I've never really had besides maybe a 2000 Mustang GT but your new car is leagues better handling plus that was Targa converted with easily 100 lbs. of body bracing so probably 400+ lbs. heavier (always driven naturally aspirated V8s and recently added 6-speed V10 so basically everything 3,700 lbs. minimum). Enjoy your new sports car!
I have been in the back seat of a Nissan 200SX on a 2 hour road trip, it was quite comfertable when you used both backseats to sit with the legs at the other side of the car lol :) No chance of sitting normally for a grown up man of under average height... I would thing same methods will work on all these cars that have a backseat that is way to small room for a man. They are really only 3 seaters not 4 as only kids 10 years or younger actually fit.
@@thepatchface7236If we’re comparing “new” what other competition does it have besides the WRX and Civic Si? I guess you could technically say the Elantra N but these are all four door sedans. The two door sports coupe genre is kind of a dead category. Not defending them of course, I would pick a used car over this all day. But new there’s barely anything that directly competes.
There is no excuse for the low output of this car considering the price and impracticality inherent in a small car like this. I went to bat for the toyobaru twins since they were first new, but I can't see how or why someone would buy one. There are no cars worth buying anymore at the prices asked (unless your idea of a cool car is a rolling entertainment center), especially when insurance is so high.
As someone whose been driving a GR86, I totally agree. People complain they aren't fast, but have never driven this generation. I'm not going to say it is fast, but it's also not slow. Its acceptable for exactly what it is, but its not a car based around power. It's about handling and being a fun car to drive in the corners, and that's what these cars do very well. The perfect amount of power to accelerate off the corners, but the steering input, the brakes (even the standard brakes), the shifter and clutch feel, and throttle response work in perfect harmony to create a fun driving experience, whether it be a commute to work, or for fun on the weekends. I never find myself not smiling in that car. It's so much fun any time you drive it.
I agree. Brz owner here and people talk so much but have never driven the new gen. It’s much quicker than the original and feels more alive. For comparison it’s about as fast as the outgoing WRX STI. But again it’s not even about that. It’s just fun
That's kinda the issue with car enthusiasts sometimes: Car enthusiasts: Bro, f those 5 ton EVs and hybrids with over 800 horsepower or whatever, I'd take a lightweight manual sports car over them any day. Also car enthusiasts: lmao look at dis lil shrimp with his BRZ that doesn't even make 300 horsepower. And it doesn't have a turbo either lol.
@@CyanRooper lotus perfected the lightweight manual sports car with toyota drivetrain, it wouldnt be hard for them to at least supercharge it. Don't be a cuck just because some corporation is too cheap to do it
Well said. I sat in a brz the year they came out but didn't fit. I now drive an nc mx5 with lowered seat. Mx5 peeps may sneer but I know for sure the Subaru engine is vastly better.
The BRZ is far from perfect, but I’m so, so glad it still exists. In a world where everyone wants massive, ridiculous SUVs it’s nice that an automaker still makes an simple,* relatively* affordable sports car. I just wish more people would actually go out and buy one.
If you hold down the track button on the right for a couple seconds and wait for the light on the dash to stay on, and THEN you hold down the left button for a few seconds it turns off ALL of the digital nannies, lane departure warning, front impact braking. You get 4 yellow lights that stay on in the cluster now. THAT is how you have fun with these!!
Not going to lie, I find the simple interior is refreshing, I hate most manufacturer are strapping tablets to the dashboard and remove all physical controls.
I love the infotainment. The buttons. All of it. Being a GTI fan for the past 15 years, I'm quite sad at the mk8. The brz and gr86 have been on my radar.
For those complaining that it isn’t “affordable”, consider this: the 1990 Nissan 240SX would cost $32,000 today adjusted for inflation. So this is priced right where it should be and affordable compared to the rest of the segment. If you want a $15k car buy a Versa or Mirage. The problem isn’t that cars are too expensive, it’s that wages haven’t increased with inflation for a lot of people. Automakers can’t fix that unfortunately.
I really wish Nissan had made a modern day 240SX competitior back when the first gen BRZ/GT86 twins came out. Imagine if Nissan and Mitsubishi collaborated to make a lightweight RWD sports car to compete with the BRZ/GR86. They could have sold it as a Nissan Silvia and as a Mitsubishi Colt Galant and maybe even offered a turbocharged variant in the form of a Nismo Silvia and Colt Galant GTO.
@@Malaphisis nah I don't believe it and even if it does come back it'll most likely be an EV. What enthusiasts want is at least one or two generations of ICE powered Silvias before an EV Silvia.
My first car was a Silvia S13 (that I paid $2000 for). Then I got a Legacy, then now I got a new BRZ. The BRZ does remind me of the Silvia. While still feeling like a Subaru. It reminds me of my dads hatch manual base model Impreza also (engine even sounds the same). The best way to describe it, it's an Impreza and a Silvia combined basically. It leans more Impreza though (granted, it even is based on an Impreza chassis, with boxer motor, and is made by Subaru), with the sports design and RWD of the Silvia.
Cool looking car. I've owned several Subaru's in the past. The only issues I had was the dealer was always trying to rip me off on service. The car was running rough with only about 50'000 miles and they told me I needed a new engine, that I would have to pay for. Turns out it was just a clogged fuel filter, this model had 2 filters, I'd changed the one near the carb, but there was another one in the rear wheel well. a $7.00, 10 min, fix. There was a grinding noise when hitting the brakes, and I was told I needed all new wheel bearings, rotors, pads, calipers, at over $1000.00 ! Turns out it was just a buildup of, snow, ice, and sand from the road, left over night in a heat garage, pressure wash, cost to fix 0 ! The heater core was leaking, the dealer had it for 4 days, they called and said it was all done. I showed up and there were a pile of screws, brackets , clips laying everywhere, the AC unit is just hanging, the dashboard had been smashed, speedo cable was broken off. They gave me $500.00 go away money.
I owned a 2023 BRZ for a little over a year before I sold it to move internationally but I loved it. I've also previously owned a newer perf pack Mustang GT and recently took a 718 GT4 on-track and I have to say that I'm tired of hearing people on the internet call it a slow car. It's very capable and easy to approach similar to the GT4, but with a lower skill ceiling of course. I can comfortably afford a GT4 but it's still a lot of money and I would be lying if I said I wouldn't go for the tS. The manual MKV Supra is also tempting but even though it fills the price point gap between the BRZ & GT4, I feel like it's a sacrifice in rawness compared to a Miata/86 or Cayman. Lastly, people whining about the price need to understand that this would have equated to a $29,000 car pre-Covid before inflation kicked in. Not that Subaru would have priced it their, but they're probably taking a margin hit. We as a populace are just getting poorer even though we've seen some wage growth. You want power, you better have $40k+ because this isn't the economy I bought my PP Mustang GT for $31k OTD in anymore....
The same people complaining this car is too slow and won't buy it, are also the same people complaining no one makes lightweight manual sports cars anymore. They want a 350hp 2700lb car for $25K and that is never going to exist.
@hassyg4083 That's a bit of an exaggeration, it has a well known oil starvation problem than can be mitigated for about the cost of a set of tires. The GR Cup folks solved this problem. This doesn't excuse Toyota's terrible handling of warranty claims along with the GR Corolla situation which is inexcusable. But to say the gr86 "falls apart" on track isn't true, it's very capable and there's plenty of info out there to do it safely.

My engine is over 100K miles and 11 years old still going strong...
"Affordable" starting at 36k. Car prices are just stupid right now. I was fortunate enough to buy a new 24 Mustang GT premium, and I love it, however, it's irritating when people call if an "Affordable V8 muscle car" sure, maybe it is compared to what's available, but no it's not "Affordable" just cause its not 100k or something.
It's not that car prices are stupid, it's that income for the vast majority of Americans has been wildly outpaced by inflation while a minuscule fraction of people make billions. $100k/year is poor now in many places. 82% of Americans aren't making that. The 'poverty line' of $15k/year is a flagrant lie, and an insult.
@@JimPekarek I make around 16k or so a year working full time......half the cost of a base model of one of these...so I am stuck drivign a car only 2 years newer than me, at least my Sentra is a 5 speed manual
I dunno, this car is approaching 40k. For that kind of money I'd expect the TS trim to bring..... a little more power lol. Just a bit. Those upgraded brakes aren't doing much more than the stock ones at the slow speeds you get up to in this thing.
I'm gonna take it the only time you push your car is when the road is straight. There's nothing with that at all. Your comment about the brakes makes me think this is the case
The small “wings” on the rear wheel wells (7:19) are actually functional aerodynamic pieces. Subaru Japan sold a set that was an after purchase/instal on the original BRZ design, just a couple of small plastic parts that riveted into the wheel well and help to break up and swirl the air enough to stabilize the rear of the car. The BRZ suffers the same high speed, rear instability issues that the Audi TT and Chrysler Crossfire did, but this is a simple solution to that problem (without adding a big spoiler as the aforementioned did) as well as the “wheel protrusion” issue created by the upswept bumper corners.
All I can say is I absolutely love my GR86. 2 years of driving it and I still can't get enough. And one thing, Doug said that these cars will never turn heads, but I have to disagree. My GR86 is my fourth sports car and has been the one that has gotten the most attention BY FAR. Granted, it's mostly other car enthusiasts that notice, but if you show up to a meet as the only GR86 or new BRZ there, you will have tons of people wanting to come talk to you about it. And what's even better is every single one of those people will just have a big smile on their face from getting to see it up close. They may not be super cars, they may not be track monsters, but much like a nice Miata, there's something about these cars that just makes enthusiasts happy!
Fantastic car! Think you nailed it for me. Personally wouldn’t want to daily a tS but if you have the means for a 2nd car and looking for primarily an enthusiast driver it’s hard to beat. Cant think of anything else i’d prefer. It’s raw, mechanical, lightweight, manual, NA. That type of driving fun hard to find today. Not being an ego is also another plus. You can go out and just enjoy the driving experience without everyone staring and wanting to race you constantly.

I own a 2023 Toyota GR86 premium as my daily and I absolutely love it. I personally think if someone is going to track a GR86 or BRZ, they should not get the premium or ts models. Instead, they should get a base model and use the money saved to modify it to be more ideal for the track. I believe you'll get a better track performing car compared to the upgrades you get with the ts model.
2024 GR86 owner here, after doing a bunch of research, I should have bought the BRZ instead. Yes the GR86 looks a lot better and firmer suspension. But from what ive heard on forums is if the engine blows Toyota will find any reason to void the warranty while Subaru is more likely to replace the engine. Also you want Subaru mechanics working on a Subaru not Toyota techs
I really like the BRZ/GR, they look cool, they got all they need interior-wise and are perfect for what they're build for. 230hp might not be the biggest number in the world but there are possibilities to "fix" that and also the cars are lightweight so they dont necessarily need 400hp to get going. If i wouldn't have my '18 WRX STi i would totally get a blue BRZ tS just like the one in the video👍
I have the 23 limited 6mt. Super fun and fast enough. The natural 4 banger is highout put at 230hp. Probably top 5 to 10 best engine natural 4banger out there as in terms of power.
@@GordonFreeman307 a number of people have done this over the years. It really depends why you have the car and what you want to use it for. A WRX is a sporty sedan (or wagon). A BRZ is a sports car. If you want the handling of a sports car, BRZ. If you want a fun sedan, WRX.
Nah purely an upgrade all around, the WRX was fun but I way overmodded it to the point I couldn't reasonably drive it on the street (was also WAY TOO LOUD) The BRZ handles much better and is far more fun to drive around day to day. Idk why so many of you are obsessed with HP, the WRX had 100 more than this all said and done and it was way more than I needed to be able to enjoy the car
Modern car makers build a classic drivers car and old school enthusiasts still complain? Great review Doug! I had a 2014 BRZ and now own a 2023 GR86. The torque at the low end makes this car so much faster and the weight to HP ratio can't be matched. Such a balanced car for spirited driving on the back roads. If you need an 8-cylinder 600hp car to prove your manhood this ain't for you. LOL
@JudeSturman Stop the cap. Those complaining aren't asking for 600WHP. 275hp or 300hp isn't unreasonable given Subaru has the powerplants on hand to provide that. You shouldn't be limited to pretending you are going fast in a "Driver's car", especially one without a convertible top.
6:42 In my opinion, that's the ideal way for a car model to evolve; every model looks similar enough to the old while also being entirely new. By the time you've gone though a few generations, the original naturally would look pretty different. The Porsche 911 and Ford Mustang both have demonstrated this well.

I like this car! It’s one of the (currently) last fairly small, fairly analog, fairly sporty and fairly inexpensive cars for enthusiasts, you can get. Cheers
I think you're wrong about the traction control buttons. The "off/track" mode button partially relaxes the systems to the extent that subaru thinks you'll do the best on the track. You have to hold the "off" button in order to fully disable the traction control systems.
I don't care if it doesn't have a luxurious interior, actually I like the simplicity of it. Maybe it doesn't have a spare tire but, it must have a "fix a flat kit" or something alike. The performance is good enough for me.
@Craycrayallday what I mean is that they need to add a bit more power to the tS over the regular BRZ, like other car brands do. It wouldn’t be bad if the tS had 250hp over the regular BRZ's 228hp.
Exactly. The base Camry had 203 HP but could go up to 301 HP. The GR Corolla has a huge HP jump over a regular Corolla but the BRZ in general goes from 205 to 228 and that's it. You can't get into the 250s or 275 or even 300 club range like Hyundai ?
I would much rather drive the BRZ tS or the GR86 than the Mk.V Supra. Because they’re the real deal. The collaboration between Subaru and Toyota is not kept secret by the manufacturers at all and it’s not a bastardization of a car from 30 years ago that’s become a JDM legend. And by now most car enthusiasts know that Toyota owns 8.4% of Subaru.
The Honda Legend had a legendary quirk. A calculator that was almost impossible to use. The GPS also tied into the air conditioning system. Why? Because that way, the car knew where the sun was and would increase fan speed on that side of the car. Doug should really review one of these, they’re full of quirks and features.
Starting at $36K, STi badges, still no turbo from factory, but worse yet-not even a decent power bump out of the NA boxer?!? I’m sorry, but 28 more HP since 2013 is not enough IMO for a car that used to start at $25.5K… Otherwise, seems like a great enthusiast starter platform. However, I feel like an ND Miata outshines the BRZ in cost and lightness. In a car like this, I’d rather be over 450 lb lighter than have 47 more HP. 👍
@@jellef4704 Touché. I guess it could be worse… Perhaps, it’s not necessarily the increased cost of the car that’s the real kick in the jimmies, rather the fact that most people’s wages have not increased accordingly. Even though it seems like they haven’t raised the MSRP of the BRZ that much, $36K seems so much more unattainable today than $25.5K did 11 years ago. Just my humble opinion/perspective.
@@SteveHarrellRally Yeah, I would say that’s a decently respectable gain then. I’m still just shocked that they didn’t throw the latest generation WRX motor in the tS. That wouldn’t take much R&D because they already have the motor, and it would make it an actual seriously respectable beginner platform IMO.
I'm really happy with my 2023 BRZ. I was torn between waiting for the tS but I didn't want subaru to use eyesight to sell my data to my insurance company
The 86 and the BRZ are the greatest sports cars on sale right now. This is like a Cayman for the price of a Corolla/Civic. Literal PERFECTION. Other cars are awesome for different reasons, but to me this is the peak. Edit: Yes, I also love that Toyota and Subaru badging on the engine at 5:35 but they are so proud because unlike the Supra, this was actually co-developed by the two brands, even that very engine was co-developed, Toyota added the Direct Fuel Injection System when Subaru said it couldn't be done. And yes, I am not sure the tS variant is justified, but if you look at it as a "Performance Package" like on the GR 86 then it makes sense :) If you want that checkbox ticked you tick it :) But yeah, this is just glorious. A two car garage with this BRZ tS and the Crosstrek Wilderness you reviwed after this is peak two car garage.

Yeah you overpaid lol

@@BrianRosson-ti4pl grats bro! Hell yea

I would thing same methods will work on all these cars that have a backseat that is way to small room for a man. They are really only 3 seaters not 4 as only kids 10 years or younger actually fit.
I guess 40k is now an affordable small sports car…🤔
Should at least be a low boost Turbo application with a modest 260hp. 40k more in Canada, serious competition in that price range.
I'd have a mid-tier VW GTI out over this in a heartbeat!
@@Arkeo36Agreed, for the new car market you’re not getting anything cool unless you’re spending around 60k or more
As someone whose been driving a GR86, I totally agree.

Soooo happy that cars like this are still being made. Love it
This is the modern day 240sx, not modern day Z. It's not meant to have 300hp.
The Sylvia is coming @@CyanRooper
@@Malaphisis nah I don't believe it and even if it does come back it'll most likely be an EV. What enthusiasts want is at least one or two generations of ICE powered Silvias before an EV Silvia.
@@CyanRooper It probably wouldn't sell. Nissan makes junk. The gr86 drives like a master piece.
They want a 350hp 2700lb car for $25K and that is never going to exist.
brz falls apart on track
@hassyg4083 That's a bit of an exaggeration, it has a well known oil starvation problem than can be mitigated for about the cost of a set of tires. The GR Cup folks solved this problem. This doesn't excuse Toyota's terrible handling of warranty claims along with the GR Corolla situation which is inexcusable. But to say the gr86 "falls apart" on track isn't true, it's very capable and there's plenty of info out there to do it safely.

It's not that car prices are stupid, it's that income for the vast majority of Americans has been wildly outpaced by inflation while a minuscule fraction of people make billions. $100k/year is poor now in many places. 82% of Americans aren't making that.
Otherwise, seems like a great enthusiast starter platform. However, I feel like an ND Miata outshines the BRZ in cost and lightness. In a car like this, I’d rather be over 450 lb lighter than have 47 more HP. 👍
According to the inflation calculator, $25.5k in 13' is $34.5 today
@@jellef4704 Touché. I guess it could be worse… Perhaps, it’s not necessarily the increased cost of the car that’s the real kick in the jimmies, rather the fact that most people’s wages have not increased accordingly. Even though it seems like they haven’t raised the MSRP of the BRZ that much, $36K seems so much more unattainable today than $25.5K did 11 years ago. Just my humble opinion/perspective.
If it helps, dyno data shows it's more like 50 more hp over the first gen.
I was torn between waiting for the tS but I didn't want subaru to use eyesight to sell my data to my insurance company
why didn't they just name it "STI". that's a better branding IMHO. The conflicting naming is lack of attention to details.
There’s no increase in power, which sti is an aspect of
Yeah, if it gets the name Sti, people are gonna expect a turbo
This car costs like $70k here in Norway. U guys in US are so lucky.
The 86 and the BRZ are the greatest sports cars on sale right now.
This is like a Cayman for the price of a Corolla/Civic. Literal PERFECTION. Other cars are awesome for different reasons, but to me this is the peak.
Edit:
Yes, I also love that Toyota and Subaru badging on the engine at 5:35 but they are so proud because unlike the Supra, this was actually co-developed by the two brands, even that very engine was co-developed, Toyota added the Direct Fuel Injection System when Subaru said it couldn't be done.
And yes, I am not sure the tS variant is justified, but if you look at it as a "Performance Package" like on the GR 86 then it makes sense :) If you want that checkbox ticked you tick it :)
But yeah, this is just glorious. A two car garage with this BRZ tS and the Crosstrek Wilderness you reviwed after this is peak two car garage.
$36K is "affordable"
Gotta love the new normal
I know. You can buy this…. or an SUV. 🚙
And the interior looks cheap
its cheap, 36k is nothing, 100k is also not much, you must not make much money
@@mikedelape6609 Thanks for sharing your opinion. No one cares

Oh my gosh it’s smiling! It’s got a smile! I already love it!
Doesn’t have a torque dip, also got loads of compliments. Parked in a very rich guy’s garage and it didn’t look totally out of place.
