- 2024 Subaru BRZ tS review by The Straight Pipes. The Subaru BRZ tS is putting down 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque from a 2.4L Boxer 4 Cylinder. At $36,295 CAD, would you take it over the Mazda Miata, base BRZ, Toyota GR86?

Pumped in audio sounds like a Mario Kart sound file lol
Can be unplugged in 2 min
@@stms4411 nah, you just play Mario kart music in the background
Why is it so hard to make pumped in audio? So many cars sound soooo bad including this BRZ. Why not hire the people who make in car sounds for videogames? It blows my mind. The only good sounding pumped in audio that I've heard is the Elantra N. You can pick from a few types but there's one called "Performance" which sounds completely realistic.
Should play the finish line music when we arrive at the destination lol
@@EvilSardine084 I think it’s cause it’s cheaper to make the synthesized garbage, personally I just changed the catback and got my noise lol
From reddit: Turn on Track Mode, THEN hold the VSC button for 3+ seconds while stopped.
And pat your tummy and rub your head. And count backwards from 100...in Latin. And viola': Unleash the beast! Okay, actually, bog down on launch and get laughed at.
I just hold the left button until it turns everything off

@@TheStraightPipes Lol it's truly like a marriage!
You have to press and hold the left button for like 5 seconds to turn everything off. It does turn all the assists off and won't turn them back on on them own.

I think the sales disparity between the GR86 & BRZ is simply due to availability and horrendous Toyota dealer markups. That’s about it.
Toyota is definitely taking full advantage of the synergies this vehicle has opened up....(cough) er, gouging their customers. I think the GR86 looks better though? 😠👿
I saw below MSRP on subaru's lot for a 2024.
@@laxminarayananks1520Subaru will deal on these, no doubt. Toyota and GR86...not so much.
I bought a brz with zero markup 1.5 years ago. 86s I looked at had markups from $10-15k. So yea it was a no brainer.
Hard to fault this car. Does exactly what you’d expect, nothing more
I can fault it. It's a gas hog and Spine Melter 5000. Feels like it has no suspension and the stock brakes are worse than a Corolla.
@@r3games1985 a gas hog? Bruh
It's not bad on gas compared to a V8 Mustang, but it has worse fuel economy than a Civic Type R, Golf R or MX-5.
@@davidpfrey
Makes me wonder what the car would be like if Toyota put the GR Corolla engine in the GR86. The Corolla is rated at 1 MPG more on both cycles, but an 86 with that engine would weigh 450 pounds or so less than the Corolla and have a smaller frontal area for less drag.
Oil starvation
I asked my dealer to turn off the pumped in noise and they did it no problem. It’s a million times better especially if you drive with the windows down. The lowered windows would rattle inside the door because the speakers were making the fake rumble noise.
Love this setup! The 24 BRZ tS is just a perfect enthusiast drivers recipe to me.
The pumped in audio can be turned off by the dealer at no charge. Need to tell them to turn "ASC" (Active Sound Control) off. No need to do any aftermarket stuff.
Why we gotta go to the dealer though????
Well then just unplug it at home lol
Picked up a sport tech BRZ in April, loving it. Fake noise is a easy unplug by the glove box. The BRZ outsells the GR86 in Canada because you can only order a BRZ and the GR86 is allocation to dealer only.
I wanted a gr86 it was hard to get so I ended up with a used miata rf with brembo and bbs for 27k with 15k km. And It's the most fun car I've ever driven.
@@CuongNguyen-kz4lv Congrats, enjoy that Miata!
The BRZ is also less money.
Really hard to decide between this and a GR86 but luckily the interest rates made that decision for me
Idk why either , when there better options than a engine filled with rtv 😂
Personally, I'm going with a BRZ. I think they look a little better, but mostly because Subaru lets you order cars and their dealers are significantly better to work with. The car is a Subaru anyway.
@@jasonmoyerthis will probably tip my decision in Subaru’s favor as well! Those Toyota stealerships are a bunch of asses I swear smh
@@cormaro13RTV hasn’t caused any issues thus far.
RTV is BS. If you beat the crap out of this and do 1.0g right handers with elevation changes, there’s an increased risk of oil starvation……probably translates into a higher rate of engine failure than the avg engine where all modern engines have very very small risk of failure.
The TS emblem next to the BRZ badge seems like an odd place to put it.
There's an amazing MotorTrend article by Johnny Lieberman (tbt) about the 2018 tS, where he compares it to repeatedly asking for more "tare" (seasoning) in your ramen, and instead being given more noodles, meat, and broth - sure, it's nice, but it's *_not what you asked for_*
Amazing. Writers love their metaphor. If you aren’t good at metaphors you can’t write about cars. It’s the rule. That’s why we stick to video
And I'll assume Mr. Metaphor would make this into unobtainium to the people who really need it: Namely young drivers learning to love a three-pedal sports car driving experience. The same clowns talked Toyota into turbocharging the MR2...which effectively killed it.
J’s OMG look while Yuri was taking that sweeper corner was priceless. Great car for young enthusiasts. High insurance costs and a lot of oil changes. Fuel costs will be high.
The insurance is just silly. My niece's husband has one of the Scions from the first gen and they soak them for....let's just say it's a lot for a car that old.
Exactly: if you don't like the tires, just wear them out and then put whatever you desire on. I hear reviewers complain about tire choices on cars as if they don't know tires are replaceable. So props for saying that.
Seems like Yuri just kinda showed that day, zero F’s given. Just sitting there saying stupid things and asking stupid questions. RUclips life is hard 😂
Thanks Jacob 👍
Thanks I try my best - Jakub

"still not going to jail" after getting to 4th is a good summary lol
That engine note is hilarious
The real sound or that piped in fake noise?
That’s the fake noise. Can you unplug it behind a panel on the passenger side door.
@@cbotten106 the fake one. Mario Kart ahh sound
5:41 there definitely is a off off you have to hold the traction off button for a couple of seconds and both traction and stability will turn off
Took my Ts to the mountains. Did 60-70mph on turns and it handled amazing , well I do have an aftermarket strut bar tho.
In Australia you can option the BRZ tS with a $4k STi lip kit and a $6k dry carbon swan neck spoiler. A $10k kit for a $50k car!
Functionally, this is a package with better brakes and dampers. The tires and wheels are basically a wash with the Limited. OTOH, the aftermarket price for similar brakes is about $4K US before installation.
Intro music was 🔥🔥🔥
Pestily music intro kinda mindfacked me.
I have a the new BRZ in white with the limited trim with a muffler delete Remark exhaust and its honestly the best sports car ive driven outside of a GT3 or GT4, in terms of driver connection with a lightweight balanced chassis nothing else besides Porsche GT cars come close to the pleasure u get from driving these cars!
"still not going to jail" 0:34
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Still miss my '13 FRS, perfect car for fun and everyday.
Once I am done with my used '15 WRX I want to go BRZ/86 again.
Missing form this review, will it baby? Car seat test pls😂
even a 6 year old can't sit in the back comfortably. Don't expect car seat to fit behind the driver seat lol
@@Denverian I never had anyone tall sit behind me (6'2") but id put full grown 6'+men in the back all the time! They are not exactly comfortable and never for long trips, but a child can easily fit passenger side.
Does the Toyota pedal dance still work on these? I had the 2018 model and it worked. That shuts off all the assists.
1:31 my eyes lit up for a sec -- really thought there'd be a turbo
In comparison to the previous model this car makes around 40 more hp and 40 more torque to the wheels than the last car, those are very close numbers to a stage one turbo, or a basic supercharger, I've kept up with a V8 challenger in a drag race so that counts for something!
@@MistaFaro I know it got faster. I actually wanted one 2 years ago, but because dealerships wanted to charge nearly $40k OTD, I ended up settling for a Tesla Model 3 instead.
6:05 Just a note, I have a gr86, and so I'm assuming it's the same. In order to turn off both traction control and stability control at the same time, You have to hold the right side button to put it into race track mode, AND THEN hold the left traction control button for a few seconds. Puts it into a second track mode which has both stability control and interaction control off.
You don't actually have to put it into track mode first. Just push and hold the left traction control off button for a few seconds and it'll turn everything off
@@gnarjunkie mine doesn't do that for some reason. Strange lol
Jacob and Yuri be beefing in these videos, been like this for at least a few years though. I guess that's what happens when you spend enough time with one person
Yup lol
A couple of honest questions from someone considering buying one of these:
1) How big a deal is the oil starvation in hard turns issue? I mean, do you have to pull a G+ for a LONG time for it to happen - or what?
2) Is the excessive RTV in the engine (potentially clogging the oil pickup) still a thing or has that been corrected?
Thanks!
It’s pretty much a non existent issue if the car has stock tires. The oil pressure issue can only happen if you’re running aftermarket grippier tires. And even then you really have to be abusing the car like crazy for anything bad to happen
I just got the 2024 new wrx tr, the signal stalks in it has been updated and now it stays in position then goes back to middle once done. I had the 2022 wrx and I just hated that signal stalk where it stays in middle, when you change lanes it can be annoying.
So does it have a baffle plate in the oil pan ? If they didn't change anything it will blow up on track eventually.
It's a street car. Anyone tracking this should do a whole host of things before they go that route. I'm sure an aftermarket baffle would do the job better than whatever the corporate beancounters signed off on.
6:40 Fun to drive
7:50 How it sounds from the outside
11:30 Infotainment; interior
To fully disable traction control, it's different in 2024: You can no longer simply press and hold the left "OFF" button. Instead, you must first be in TRACK mode using the right button, only after that can you press and hold the left "OFF" button. It's silly.
Ts = track starter kit. That's a better description of what this package is really about.
Suspension, tires, and brakes. Pretty much some of the first things you will do when tracking your car.
I know not the same class of car but, now you both being people with families…would you take an 86/brz (30k) or civic si (also 30k). Aim is a car that can be satisfying to drive (steering, shifter etc) and also take baby around sometimes. Background I’m at the point in my life where I’ve done my rwd shenanigans and don’t value it as much. Wife has a practical car.
I actually drove pass that LS FRS during the weekend LOL
Caught me soooo off guard
What!! Where
I think if y'all could add the vehicle's weight along with the horsepower and torque numbers, it could put into perspective how well the engine is working to move the vehicle. Gas milage would also be great in your reviews. Thanks!
If you enter track mode and then press and hold the off button for 20 second you completely turn off traction control,

Who is this guy? 😂
Thanks for the honest and awesome review
I enjoyed this review better than the throttle house one tbh .
Is the 2.4 litre bxr engine reliable?
Funny you never arrive at that stop sign after the first burn out. 😅
I'm sure others have said it by now, but turning traction fully off is easy. Press and hold the traction off button until the traction light illuminates and the tach switches to the horizontal bar gauge. Then it 100% off off and will let you make whatever heroic drifts/dumb mistakes you choose to attempt.
It’s not 100% off in that mode. That’s the mode we were driving in and it was still intervening
@@TheStraightPipes are you sure? I'm not talking about track mode, there's a second drive mode that uses the horizontal tach. I can DM you a video on eye-gee if you want so we can determine if we're talking about the same thing. Be interesting to know if they changed it so it no longer works
That is the most egregious pumped in audio I've ever heard 😂
Have you heard the Hyundai Ionic 5N?
no, that's not why it is because ALL toyota dealers try to notoriously rip people off buying a GR86 and most subaru dealers will charge you exactly the MSRP on a BRZ.
I honestly don't know if I will ever buy another toyota again in my life after the way they treated me and others with the GR corolla and 86 fiasco. Even buying rav4s they were ripping people off for a while.
Did they fix the oil pressure drop problem
next year we get the itS
I wish they made a T top/targa version .........that would be epic
Yes, Honda Del Sol or 1989 Toyota MR2 Turbo type of vibe.
They dont have the balls.
@@fortheloveofnoise Balls being enough extra structural integrity to survive a late roof deletion. Then yes, no balls! ⚾🥎🏈⚽
Any painted caliper changes color with heat. Its why real race calipers are anodized. Good cooling helps, so does just being slow on track.
Ballerrrrr close out !
I noticed yall said there’s no way to fully defeat the traction and stability control. I know that the 22 and 23s of you hold the traction off button, it shuts it all off completely. But for these 24s, it’s a little bit different, I think you have to hold them both down or like, have it in track mode and hold down the traction off button. I’m not sure, I have a 22
Tried all variations
Paying more just to not get a really cool wing is kind of insane to me. What do you get? Gold painted calipers when the limited has the same brakes? If you weren't driving a lower trim would you really be able to tell that the damping tuning is any different? I seriously doubt it.
Still have my 2014 White BRZ. Keeper for life.
❤
I wish they put that infotainment and the hvac buttons in the base WRX vb -_-
Great review. Any update when you guys will be reviewing the Bugatti Tourbillion?
Heh never

All I want to know is when it's check out time, oh no wait, all I want to know is... does the t stand for turbo?
5:34 you actually can completely disable traction control and stability control by holding the tc button for a few seconds.
tS stands for "tough shit" as in "oh you wanted the turbo STI motor? Well tS for you!"
Thank goodness Toyota/Subaru has resisted that path to oblivion.
as a gr86 owner with 20000miles. hate the fuel economy. and the cheap shitty spine tingling shocks. other than that i would never sell it. u cant replicate what this car is anymore. while silvias with an sr20 r going from 18k-35k. the twins are our modern day ‘S16’
idk im still happy with my 2020 tS its similar, has more cool stuff like red seatbelts and imo better looking seats. Also i love knowing its 1 of 300 instead of 1 of however many. either way they are amazing cars
Each time I see a Toyobaru review from the Straight Pipes, I wonder if you still lose stuff from your pockets like in your first BRZ review. 😅
Also the 17+ 4.3 gear directly bolts over..
Absolutely hated the OEM Torsen differential, had to upgrade to a clutch pack LSD.
V8 FRS sounds like hilarious fun
How does this 2024 infotainment system look worse than my 2018 brz's infotainment system.
I’m 18 living in the uk. I want to drive a sick manual car so bad, with a notchy gearbox. But until you’re like 23-24 insurance is like 8 grand a year💀
Sounds like it would be cheaper to not have insurance just be careful 😂
Will you guys be reviewing the new Elantra N 2024?
In 14 months, based on the timeliness of this review. My print magazine wrote this up literally months ago.
Same wheels as the GR86?
Still to much silicone/sealant getting into the oil intake tube???? If not, I would consider buying one. I can't take a chance until I know 100%!!!!
The RTV hasn’t shown to cause any issues. Oil pressure drop is a separate issue you may only experience on a race track.
The engine sounds great from the outside. Where did they source the fake engine sounds? Doesn’t sound like the same car lol
I mean, the wheels and mirror caps are just the ones from the gr86, black.
11:24 why do people, even car enthusiasts, always act like it's weird when manual transmission vehicles have cruise control?! it's literally the EXACT SAME system the automatic version of a car uses, just with the clutch pedal switch added alongside the brake pedal switch to turn it off
Great point here on considering the base model instead and making your own mods especially given this particular car. It's probably what I'd do myself
So now this is just the Performance Package disguised as an STI? Interesting move, I like drifting so for starters the GR 86 is more for me than the base BRZ but with even less drift, yeah, I prefer the 86 :),
But if you Autocross this? This is THE way to go.
Also, to turn Traction Control off you just have to hold the button for like 5 seconds not a single press.
Did they fix the engine on this?
Nah, I think they’ve said the RTV isn’t enough to cause damage. I don’t trust that personally but that’s what they’ve said.
That's too many letters for that little power. But it does look like a lot of fun to drive which is important. The shifter seems really good. If their are more BRZ's sold than I would opt to get it's twin GR86 if it's the same cost.
Was Jacob kind of grumpy today? haha
I think he's tired. These top RUclipsrs are ground down to nubs, in general.
"Hey our car has a weak point should we address that? Lol no why would we do that?"
My BRZ is on order and should be here next month!
I wonder if we’d ever get a T Top / RF BRZ? It might just crush the Miata in sales
Looks cool but I’d still pick the S2000 over BRZ/GR86!
The sti parts catalogue does have a big wing. It's a shame it's not from the factory with it
Gotta have wing. Wing it, Baby!

I had a frs 2016, that car was super fun to drive. I miss it lol. Not the fastest car around but it did what you expect. Only problem was the space in the back. Like why bother putting seats back there? Lol
The rear seats is to avoid the dreaded "2-seater" insurance hit. Two doors is bad enough. You go two seats and Flo starts to get wet.
you need to hold the TC off button down for like 3 sec
Hey guys. I tried your truecar link for a porsche and two cars that were listed I asked about they both said the car is no longer available. Meh. Seems to be a scam to try using your link guys. Dealers don’t deal with your referrals. Probably because they don’t want to give a discount. Lame
Send me some screenshots with what happened to Instagram @yuritereshyn and I’ll run it by the truecar team
Yes yes yes agreed -- more fun with proper (less grippy) tires. One year in my BRZ now...fun per dollar unmatched at new car pricing 🤙
They should release a factory turbo version of the BRZ and GR86
I would assume BRZ is outselling 86 because toyota has been notoriously difficult to order with since rona, and is much more likely to add mark ups. With the brz you can easily custom order exactly how you want, and get better financing. Additionally the GR is a couple grand more for seemingly no reason, and personally I like the front fascia of the brz
I like the GR86 facade and Toyota doesn't want to deal.
I went with the GR86 Trueno, you get a little more for less cash.
It looks cool haha I like it
Where is the turbo STI version!?!??
Its funny that this outsold the GR86 in Canada, correct me if I'm wrong but here in the States it is the opposite 🤷
