After last watching Pretentious movie reviews and reading Imaan Sheikh's blog, my memory of HSSH was reduced to that of a nineties drama fixated on music, dance and traditional love for family that needs to be shown explicitly. It maybe a bad movie but you have drawn our attention rightly to the references that its storyline made, and also forgot to make. Since I have not seen Lajja, it was enlightening to know that the script questioned the narrative of Ramayana in a novel way. Madhuri Dixit's dialogue "mujhe kuch sabit wabit nahin karna" was spot on. Another great thought provoking video essay! And yes, we need to relook at the ancient stories, because they justify certain practices in today's country that are against human dignity. Stories are a great starting point to get people into thinking and re-evaluating their assumptions about the society and the world.
Shakespearean plays have also been interpreted and presented in tremendously different ways throughout the ages, being relevant to their sociopolitical context for e.g. Hamlet being presented as Oedipus during the Freudian era vs Hamlet being presented as a gentle, weak prince during the Romantic era and so on. In the same way, seeing different interpretations of classical stories in Indian mythology such as Ramayana is so refreshing. The beauty of these classical stories and Shakespearean plays is that they can be adapted to any era and retold from a fresh perspective, making them timeless. I hope more people in India see the potential in presenting Indian mythology in new light, as opposed to just retelling the tradition, allowing these pieces to flourish and take new shapes. @@dhawal8261 Ram was a human avatar, so he had the characteristics of a human being. Hence, he simply could not balance both fronts.. The epic tried to show both sides of human characteristics and established the consequences. Problem is people could only understand the righteousness part given that Ram was an avatar and at that day & age women simply didn't matter as much, hence the other part by and large was overlooked. But times have changed and so I would have to disagree with aravind with the statement that 'its not possible to be both at a same time'. You can be the head of your family like Ram was to his Rajya, yet you cannot fall to societal pressure if say your spouse works in company of other men. It's possible to balance much better now, yet such things happens regularly. Vinit rightly said that Ramayan has got ingrained in our DNA. So yes, Ram should be reexamined. With increased IQ and critical reasoning, we should be able to get above the naivety and reconsider the epics from different perspectives and add 'better' values to own lives
@@dhawal8261My opinion was based on the Ramayana as we know. However it seems many believe that Uttara Kanda was added later and was not a part of Valmiki Ramayana, so it's controversial as there are chances of adultation. Not guilty until proved, hence Ram is worshipped. These are millennium old epics, so if you say anything against it it incites fear that you want to destroy our roots. To my eyes it's understandable as other peoples conquest in the past have affected the backbone of our society and as a result we have become insecure about it. Hinduism as what we know today has survived multiple onslaughts from within and outside. Like I said, my assessment was based on uttara kand as mentioned in the video but again we don't know what actually is true. But we do have all the versions. The idea is to take away the morals and implement in our lives instead of hurting anybody else's sentiment. Everybody is entitled to their own belief.
Another great video. The questions you raised for Ram's character by the end of the video is what I used to think a lot as a child, gradually realising the time constraint narrative of the story and became a monotheist by the age of 15 and then atheist by the age of 17 and finally agnostic by the age of 18, only believe in the rare possibility of a creator and nothing like "quintessential God"
❤ I remember watching Lajja and the drama scene has remained one of the most enduring cinematic memories for me. In all my slack jawed naivety the thought had never crossed my mind - if Sita's loyallty or "purity" was questionable then why was Ram spared the suspicion? Ram demands she be tested by fire TWICE along the story of Ramayana! The second time Sita is so humiliated and fed up she asks (her)mother earth to swallow her and provide refuge from the world. *headwall* And dudes gambling their frikken wives away like frikken property and then becoming "just" kings! *headwall* *headwall*
v r The wrong thing Ram did was to take Agni Pariksha in Lanka. He thought that his people will accept Sita because he accepted her. But that was the blunder because both suffered. But we cannot doubt that Ram never thought that his Sita was impure.
Your narrative style and analytical approach is so good that it's helping me to change the way I look at things. It's helping me to understand my literature text in a better way. Thank you so much☺

Best content ever seen in youtube specially when it comes to bollywood related stuff. You are doing awesome job. Dont ever stop creating content like this. Best luck.
You are talking of Ramcharitmanas, not Ramyana itself. The Ram of Ramayana was not free of the failings of anger, of the feelings of means justifying the ends etc. It was the Tulsidas epic that elevates Ram to God. Tulsidas was a man of his time, and he projected his thoughts on God to Lord Ram.
Bro great quality content. Keep going. Do it more often. We need this. Why don't you make a video drawing the context of mahabharata in Cinema. Also a video showing different styles of great directors and their masterpieces.
"Hum Saath Saath Hai is a bad film". *Unsubscribes*. Kidding! Your channel is among the best in India for film analysis, love your work, do keep it up. But HSSH will always remain a guilty pleasure; something about it makes me unable to change the channel even during the 456th rerun on Zee Cinema. For Sita's perspective, you should watch Nina Paley's 'Sita Sings the Blues'. It's kind of a universal feeling, the Sita Syndrome - being trapped in love of a man who is very, very wrong for you. But the poignancy expressed in that film, along with the blues music is so rich, it makes you a sucker for pain.
Ritwika Roy bloody hell you talk exactly like my ex...but even though I have never watched a barjatya movie more than 15 mins but I must agree with that our country is so unique and large that there are people who find movies like these very relateble and they have every right too....For a change we must not got carried away by the phenomenon of Hollywood by completely ignoring our ethos and attitude towards love and family which is in direct contradiction and strongly against western society.

well to be fair.. i think the point of ram's arc might that even though he is a good soon and ideal man, he is flawed. and if you let somebody get under your skin or in your heart too deep, you are fucked. it also shows how different the motives are for the genders and how differently the operate. and that is an archetype that is true even today. Its written from a man's perspective because its written by a man. I dont think any man or woman can truely see life deeply from the opposite sex's perspective. and I absolutely agree.. stories and myths should be continously revisited through adaptions in changing times.
i think saying that he knows nothing is an overly generalized statement on your part that is stemming from a little insecurity and anger. perhaps saying.. he doesnt know the whole thing would be more reasonable. take the time to educate rather than denounce and dont let somebody on the internet spoil your mood. narayana, narayana !
^but you should realize that the fact that we should keep updating our customs and ways of life with time is inherent to sanatana dharma . This guy said nothing new . Just that 99.99% hindus have never read any book of hinduism , most of their knowledge comes from movies and cartoons . Questioning everything is an integral part of sanatana dharma . Hindus can question the very existence of god , every one should seek for themself
Many scholars say the story of Uttar Ramayana is not part of original Valmiki Ramayana and nor the Agni pareeksha. Since the style of writing in these part is quite different. Even the "Lakshaman Rekha is Tulsi's idea. Lakshaman didn't draw any line if you check the original sanskrit version as published by Geeta Press. These additions show the changing social status of women and the values.

With great time comes great quality.
It is so fullfilling to listen to your commentary, I find myself coming back to these videos again and again to explore it in greater depth everytime. Please keep the videos coming..
i think Ram should be examined as an ideal King rather than an ideal husband ....its not possible to be both at a same time
Not even for a God??I thought Gods could do anything.
@@SauravDasGuptaIN If he can't rise above the level of an ordinary human being then there's no reason to worship him like a god. Is there?
@@SauravDasGuptaIN Also I agree that it should be reexamined however as soon as one raises such issue one is tagged as anti hindu which is a sad part.
Good content does take time. You were missed. :)
"It's time we hear from Sita for a change"
Amazing
Sumedha Tiwari She did millions of years ago if u believe in Ramayana.
you are brillent man... just keep making videos like this, atleeast once in a week, please.
Loved how subtly you used Blade Runner's theme near the end to drive this video's theme home. Much love to you!
Love this type of content!!❤
U desereve more subscribers...😊best of luck!!!
The way you clarify things is great. Keep doing this 👍👍👍👍
I wasnt expecting confused travolta meme😂
Wow! Vinit you are watching these movies through different lens. It never struck in my mind that "Hum saath saath hai" was based on Ramayana.
Hey, great insights, as always. I am curious. Where is Pather Panchali on your priority list? Just want a head's up.
Would appreciate if you reply.
I'm glad you know about pather panchali
❤
I remember watching Lajja and the drama scene has remained one of the most enduring cinematic memories for me.
*headwall*
And dudes gambling their frikken wives away like frikken property and then becoming "just" kings!
*headwall* *headwall*
v r The wrong thing Ram did was to take Agni Pariksha in Lanka. He thought that his people will accept Sita because he accepted her. But that was the blunder because both suffered. But we cannot doubt that Ram never thought that his Sita was impure.
i can listen to this guy for hours
glad to see u back.. please be active
gourav goo

The background track from Blade Runner fits so well!
Your narrative style and analytical approach is so good that it's helping me to change the way I look at things. It's helping me to understand my literature text in a better way. Thank you so much☺
Vinit it's all about the compassion and it's really worth it... It's all about story's to entertain us since ramayan mahabharata till now..
You're the best channel on RUclips about Indian cinema. Period. Recommended to many of my friends, many times...
You're just great...
Your videos always provide a new perspective. Thank you very much for putting your efforts to make such a compelling analysis.
Bro u surely deserve an oscar for ur analysis.. hats off brother...
Don't worry about time....we can wait for months to come for such valuable content..
I was waiting for your video.
I have fallen in love with your channel !
"Tears in the rain " in the end gave me goosebumps
i love your channel.....you're brutally honest about everything!
Amazing Work! Loved the video. I love the research you put into these videos.
If this channel was active today, the face of Indian cinema would be at least better.
I love this channel so much 😍😍😍
Best content ever seen in youtube specially when it comes to bollywood related stuff. You are doing awesome job. Dont ever stop creating content like this. Best luck.
You explain all the things very well.
I think the television series in DD is the best. It would be really difficult to make a movie adaptation. May be a trilogy would work.
The Complicated Fellow we need a tv series like game of thrones for mahabharata
Ritwika Roy exactly its been a long boring film...
Ritwika Roy bloody hell you talk exactly like my ex...but even though I have never watched a barjatya movie more than 15 mins but I must agree with that our country is so unique and large that there are people who find movies like these very relateble and they have every right too....For a change we must not got carried away by the phenomenon of Hollywood by completely ignoring our ethos and attitude towards love and family which is in direct contradiction and strongly against western society.
antiantagonist proletariat love towards family is against western culture ? What ?
Ritwika Roy you said, "your channel among the best in India" can you suggest me some of em plox, cause I never ever found such a quality channel, suggest plox 😞♥
Sita Sings the Blues was amazing
Your observation is really enlightening! I don't know how much I can apply it myself, but your each video is as good as an informative seminar on bollywood movies!
Even if I dont conciously think about these aspects, after watching your videos, I completely agree with what you have to say.
Never thought I would see a video like this on your channel or any channel on RUclips ! Keep surprising us !
I had never thought bollywood movies could be analysed like you do. Please keep up the good work, and may I suggest joining patreon?
I already have a Patreon account. You find the link in description and at the end of the video is also!
Cinema Beyond Entertainment Ah, my bad. Maybe tell the viewers about it before rolling credits?
I think I should start doing that from next video onwards!
Genius work! Loved the way your content is articulated and presented before the audience.
Brilliant
Whenever I watch ur videos only thing comes to my Mind is , wish I could see or feel the layers in the characters n movie like you do.
Still trying to understand ur Dio Chahta Hai narrative. That was something different
Hope u come up with more videos n educate us
Thank you!!
I learn a lot of things about film making and Storytelling. .thank you so much sir .i am so glad you make these videos
Amazing analysis.. Thank you so much.. Please make one video about Mahabharat and bollywood..
Great video as always! Have you seen Sita sings the Blues? Impeccably animated, and a beautiful retelling.
Great content. I am always fascinated by movies and filmaking in general and seen a lot of channels discussing about it. Finally found someone who is tackling the Indian cinema and analysing in a pretty detailed manner. Keep up the good work, this channel deserves more subscribers.
P.S- could you do a video about Satyajit Ray ?
loved your analysis on both the films... speaking of story telling by perspective, another mention about Raavan's perspective in Mani Ratnam's Raavan. hope to hear your thoughts in further follow-up videos if possible
Yeah , but Raavan also has a prespective ? I mean his lust lead him to his down fall
I am speechless completely. Hats off to this man.
Your videos are like movies by some legendary film maker. We have to wait like almost eternity to get a new one but in the end they use to be master class...
Sits Sings The Blues. The only version of Ramayana you ever need to watch
Very interesting arguments you've put up. I was waiting for your videos. When I found your channel, I watched all your videos in one sitting. Keep it up.
Dude, u are unbelievable...amazing job done.. keep it up.. i just felt that video should never have ended...
Amazing content. Particularly the ending. Awesome video
The Blade Runner score in the background. love it
I don't know how many times I have watched this video. I love every second of this video.
You have such a deep knowledge of film and you understand it unlike Bollywood
It would be great to see you make a top 10 Best Movies Of Indian Cinema
Man u jst nailed it, u n when you see it are my inspiration for watching a movie, but I have seen many analysts making videos on masterpiece, but no one makes a video on movies which has great themes but bad execution, with this video u jst changed my perspective about analysts, great video
There are lot of movies in HIndi Cinema where the concept is really nice but execution especially in screenplay, they mess it up.
Great video mate, keep making more of those, I'll be waiting.
Dude. You are such an inspiration. Your videos are so damn different and thoughtful. Great work in every single video. I like your fearless approach to critique and novel approach to finding great works.
very good insights!! lajja description was a revelation!! good job!
well to be fair.. i think the point of ram's arc might that even though he is a good soon and ideal man, he is flawed. and if you let somebody get under your skin or in your heart too deep, you are fucked. it also shows how different the motives are for the genders and how differently the operate. and that is an archetype that is true even today.
These additions show the changing social status of women and the values.
interesting. im not hindu so I cant say what the demographic is but I think blind followers exist in every religion because dumb people exist everywhere
interesting. tell me more cool stuff like that
Awesome Brother! Please keep on going with more amazing contents..can't wait to see what's next!
