The flute theme is in Ananda Bhairavi
The song Tu Hi Re with it's charanam is in Charukesi
The song Kehna Hi Kya is in Kirwani
Each of these ragas express a certain bhava and Rahman knew how to use those to full advantage!

One thing I noticed about BOMBAY's music is how ARR used Gujarati folk song "HEY JEERE" as background music when Manisha Koirala lands in Bombay. Also struck me that in the ‘staircase’ scene, Aravind Swamy’s Sufi theme contrastingly complements Manisha’s Carnatic riff. Conflicting cultures harmoniously conversing ..just mesmerising intellectuality in using music for storytelling…

If getting to know a girl is stalking, then everyone will be single forever. Girls be like " He must have the guts to come and talk to me." but then they dont want them to look at them in public or "follow" them??? Like what???? Are boys suppose to read your mind to get to know you, and to know if u like him back or not???? I dont get it...In that movie, that guy was trying to get to know her. Whenever she came across him, she didn't even say "don't follow me" or showed any sign of being uncomfortable with his presence. What does that suppose to mean? Especially when there's no much of a technology developments to access and get to know about a person..How else should he tried to confess his love??? The main reason she tried to avoid him was bcs the difference in religion and she definitely knew the consequences. Not bcs she thought he was stalking her. Oh Come on ! Mani sir has nvr had the intention to teach negative things to his audience. He just shows the reality in his movies. If that looks like he's trying to promote stalking culture to YOU, then the problem is with you, not the movie or the Creator. Ppl talked about this thing for Dil Se too.. I just can't understand their thought process. Just because it happened to us and we personally went through something like it, that doesn't mean we should look at things with a suspicious and negative mind... Waited for almost 15 years for someone to explain me how Rahman composed this bg score, specifically the Bombay Theme.
Was a kid when this movie released back in 90's, never watched in theater.
If this movie re-releases today in India, I don't mind travelling to india to watch this in theater to get the feel its theatrical experience.

By far the best dissection of such a complex scoring process, in a very simplistic manner, explaining the thought process, as well as technical aspects so beautifully. I became a big fan watching this very first video from your channel.

Very well planned and scripted video! Really loved the work behind it, I'm also a music producer (I make songs not background score) and the way you explained was very simple, even a non musical person would definately learn alot from this!
Very happy that there are some Indian RUclipsrs who gives quality content to us! Keep it up, the whole team.
Everything's perfect from scripting, facts, arrangement techniques, video editing and correct scene placement while explaining!
    Congratulations

Amazing.. superb explanation... Two most interesting facts are when sa ga ma pa ni sa is played along with the mridangam and when the relationship of parents unifying is explained through silence.... It's evident why Rahman, Raja sir or any other music director are so talented... Its because they have been working on it from many years behind the scenes as programmers, arrangement etc so before they start their first assignment they would have understood thousands of music fundamentals

Its not just Bombay, you have a similar feeling when you watch Saathiya.
It originates from Chalka Chalka (like the thrill of love at first sight),
the 2 trains crossing scene right after the song,
then it gets lost in family troubles after marriage,
and then it plays back as Rani comes back to consciousness during the end, rekindling the same old feeling of first love (making you teary).
That's the leitmotif genius of Rehman for you!
If you are a fan of AR Rehman, you might have sensed its effect 20 years back, even when you were too small to understand why.

    • @karmeeleon
      @karmeeleon 4 года назад +1

I mean the scores used in Saathiya are essentially same the as Alaipayuthei's score (with or two motifs being changed or rewritten) but you make a very good point. Rahman does use motifs in both Alaipauthei/Saathiya and Dil Se. In fact, it's really obvious in all A.R. Rahman and Mani Ratnam films. However, my favourite one has to be Kannathil Muthamitaal.

The man who bought the concept of harmony, obligatos and polyphonic lines in bollywood is Salil chowdhury.. I agree that his background scores were not as effective as ar rahman but we have to consider that he was the one who started the trend of making melodies which follow chord progressions.. you know both rahman and ilayaraja were influenced by his legacy (both ar rahman's father and ilayaraja were musicians who worked with him)..
I am writing this because when you are talking about western musical concepts in Indian cinema music.. you have to talk about one of the pioneers of that..
