25 years...still I remember when i played this album in my JVC system. I was extremely exicted and blown away by the beats of chaiyya chaiyya...and Dil se re by ARR was out of the world experience...Dil se music is a great learning material for one who search for a extraordinary music production. For me, as a teen, the song was Ajnabi. The other songs were great as well but this one stuck. Even now these songs resonate. Perhaps that's what make AR a true timeless legend.

I concur with most of the comments here. I believe that Dilse album is the pinnacle of ARR. 25 yrs and even now - it would not be out of place in any latest movie. The only grouse for me was the fantastic background themes were not released when the audio cassettes came in. They have to be found separately on RUclips

When Dilse was released every stereo had its songs playing and everyone knew it had music by Rahman. It was quite unusual because music mostly got known by singers rather than composers from where I am. ARRahman had already become a household name with his albums like Kaadhalan and Bombay at that time.

25 years already 😮, I heard Chaiya chaiya song in a teakadai (tea shop) in front of my college a deep South (TN) town, song sounded so alien to south ears , I still vividly remember the faces of people listening to that song , people were not able to place the song , they were thrilled and confused at the same time, they didn’t know if they like it but surely were not able to reject it, within a few days , it was playing everywhere repeatedly 😂

I concur with most of the comments here. I believe that Dilse album is the pinnacle of ARR. 25 yrs and even now - it would not be out of place in any latest movie. The only grouse for me was the fantastic background themes were not released when the audio cassettes came in. They have to be found separately on RUclips
Those days, BGMs were musused by TV channels for they serials. Thus ARR never relesaed them. Now India has learnt to respect - IPR. That's the reason.

When Dilse was released every stereo had its songs playing and everyone knew it had music by Rahman. It was quite unusual because music mostly got known by singers rather than composers from where I am. ARRahman had already become a household name with his albums like Kaadhalan and Bombay at that time.

I was shocked by knowing it was a flop movie. How possible? Not only the musics, it is the best movie by SRK.
Commercially back then, maybe not. But it's a classic now. Wonderful movie with songs that'll live forever.

25 years already 😮, I heard Chaiya chaiya song in a teakadai (tea shop) in front of my college a deep South (TN) town, song sounded so alien to south ears , I still vividly remember the faces of people listening to that song , people were not able to place the song , they were thrilled and confused at the same time, they didn’t know if they like it but surely were not able to reject it, within a few days , it was playing everywhere repeatedly 😂

Wow..a very unconventional script to be played by mainstream actors even in today’s OTT times! Hats off to Mani Ratnam, ARR, Gulzar for Dilse and Manisha Koirala too for her unusual role. Though, is rumoured that Kajol was the original choice for this role and she had rejected due to date issues and then the role was Manisha’s baby! But unfortunately, had this movie been a solid hit, MK wud’ve been a huge actress at that time and career wouldn’t have started sinking!
It did well overseas. In India - it has acquired a cult status. 25 years ago... we were not willing to accept realistic characters...
