This is the purest example of a talented passion project. Those special games which are developed almost entirely alone for half a decade, mostly in private, and simply look extremely impressive are almost always worth supporting. I can think of no negative examples to contrast with Pizza Tower, Cuphead, Celeste, and Hollow Knight itself following this pattern. I would give a 99% chance that this game turns out to be absolutely incredible
all amazing games, and I would add Axiom Verge, Radio the Universe, Lorn's Lure and Cosmoteer to the list (though the latter three are still not due for a full release, the solo devs put in some amazing work)
And I would add Renaine to the list for sure.
And Crosscode and Phoenotopia
Omori and stardew valley
@@adriaanlips9479 came here to say Stardew Valley.
So stoked for this one! I’m in a discord with the devs and they’re so kind, too.
nice numbered like. It's really an honor
No
Instantly backed! looks super awesome.
Never backed a kick starter before, but between you and all the amazing puns they have on their Facebook page, I'm sold! And given that the kick starter page only went up today and it's already 35% funded, I'm betting this'll be meeting its quota.
It's already 114% funded, so it looks like we'll just be counting stretch goals at this point!
@@c_smathers Hot diggity! What wonderful news to come home to after a shift! I'll be sure to keep checking back in!
@@c_smathers and now its over 200% funded in a matter of days. sheeshers. i personally pledged 145 smackers cause i want the cute plush and poster
Along with what fire said, I think one of the most important things that can give a game life is animations. Look at how silksong looks so damn smooth but also so clear about what's happening. Today my friend forwarded me another 2d game, possibly metroidvania, called afterimage. It looks really good but the moment I saw the trailer I was turned off as the animations looked clunky. So my suggestion would be to hire an animator and get the animations right. This looks premature. If the animations are done well, this might blow up a lot from what fire said. Best of luck devs!
Hm
i have to agree. i think also the backgrounds are really pretty but the characters themselves look a little out of place and amateurish along with the animations. other than that it looks super cool
Also what could be done is doing LORE, no matter if it really is a well thought many leveled lore or just millions of characters telling random info - it will do. Sure it won't be for everyone, but it doesnt require any skills like animation. I have an example - there is no light. Check it out, great game, a lot of text (i wish it had more of an actual storyline instead of just small talks and cluncky side stories) but it got me the right way. I think you are right and as much as animations are needed i think there also should be more TEXT tools to sink you into the worlds and if many developers know about importance of animations and good loocks there are very few who does dialogues, stories, characters to talk to.. cuz we recently had this darksouls meta where we make almost no plot but let players guess and come up with story themselves using visualisastion storytelling but.. this grew old on me - i want to play a game and read a good (i mean in size and feels, it should not be top notch Lord of the Rings/Brandon Sanderson/Wheel of Time story, thatd be overkill) story. So yeah, maybe if you cant do the best of animation, just spend some evenings coming up with cute unnecessary stories for your game to put players deeper into atmoshpere and let them speculate for years after they've completed it
Looks like an adorable game! I'm looking forward to following development!
they sent me the preview as well, honestly I was really sad when it ended lol, I just wanted to keep playing
this seems really fun and adorable, going to add this to wishlist, thanks for the showcase, fire
I had no idea there was going to be a kickstarter for this game. I've had it on my wishlist for a while.
00:00 "If you're anything like me" you are also going crazy over the wait for Silksong
Thanks for shedding some light onto this one! Certainly something to keep an eye on!
Fireb0rn, you are very good at doing reviews for video games and it really helps me find new games I enjoy playing. Please keep doing reviews like this one.
I am 100% playing this once it releases
now this is how you properly make a game inspired from another game, instead of outright making a clone of said game you got inspiration from. this game looks very charming.
I’ve been testing and now playing lone fungus since the beginning I love it so much. I’d really appreciate if you did another video on it because it would help get it out there some more. It’s a great game and I feel like not enough people know
From hearing your vague description and seeing gameplay, I was already convinced this is worth my time by the 1:30 mark. Looking forward to the release.
Just listen to 2:30 to 2:32 ... Now that is fireborn out of context
Fr i was like "hold on wtf"
I always love to see this genre grow, evolve, try new things. It's been a long time coming. With the switch out there I'd love to see joycons designed with a d pad specific for metroidvanias.
Surprised to see this video show up in my feed, since I've been talking about this game for a while and just supported it on Kickstarter
"Im a sucker for good kids in stories, and i quickly fell in love with them"
it's funnier because he used to be a teacher too
phrasing, people!
Thought I was the only one that heard this
I definitely raised my eyebrow at that one too
"IN STORIES" lol
Been looking forward to this one for a long time, super excited for them to get the credit they deserve!
I set my alarm this morning to back it as soon as it went live. I love how much work and passion the devs have put into this, and the music their composer has written for it is just gorgeous!
I stumbled upon their Twitter account a while ago, and have been following/wishlisting them ever since. I had a great feeling about it and I am glad to hear you confirm that.
This is awesome I will be playing this when it releases!
This looks like fun. I'll definitely go check it out.
The game's been in my wishlist for a while now, and this made me want to play it even more :)
Been following this game on twitter for a couple years at this point and am so excited to see the kick starter launch, can't wait to play it!
I'm definitely going to keep this on my radar! Some of those gameplay issues sound like a turnoff for me, but I'm curious to see where they end up.
I LOVE the sound design of Illyia's attacks. The distinct sfx for each type of hit are very satisfying, and make each attack feel unique. I especially love the HYAH-*whipcrack* when the riposte lands.
I've had this game wishlisted on steam for years now! I first heard of it from a Get Indie Gaming video a long time ago. I hadn't seen they were doing a kickstarter. Super excited, and I've already backed it :)
Looks awesome! Hope they add a more smooth difficulty slide though, this seems like something that would have a bit of an entry barrier
Wow! I'm on a discord with the devs, and didn't expect to see this in my youtube feed so quickly. Real happy for the attention the devs are getting!
I am pretty sure that fireb0rn singlehandedly gained a TON of new players for this AMAZING looking game. Thank you fire!
i find the fact that you can duck into the chest at 5:56 cute
I've been waiting for this game for almost a year, looks really cool
looks fantastic, id love a small playthrough even if its not the full game when it releases just showing off the state of the game
This reminds me of a new metroidvania i picked up about a month ago called”Vernal Edge” it was surprisingly really good for only being roughly 10-15 hours long on normal, it had great challenge, good combat, and a somewhat compelling story, the only thing it really lacked was making it somewhat easier for players to make progress, i would find myself returning to areas to find a key item I needed in another area, However this didn’t go unsolved, there is a skill you can buy that lets you see how many treasures are left in an area, and you were able to mark areas with these color coded markers, but it would rely on me having to remember which colors meant what, overall though it was very fun! I searched online for a secret code and lo and behold I had unlocked what they called “Vicious” difficulty and I’m afraid of what it brings
Looks cool!
It's funny, I've actually known about thiis game for a while and was just gonna check if a new trailer had dropped or I could add it to my wishlist on steam.
Basically Dead Cells + Hollow Knight + Kirby. Sounds nice
this game looks amazing, and looks like so much passion has been put into it. definitely gonna buy this when it comes out!
i been so hype for this game to come out i add it on my steam wish list all the way back in 2019
I have it wishlisted for like 2 years. Finally I hear something about it 👌🏻
Looking promising, will put it on my Steam wishlist if available.
I've been waiting for this since last year!! cant wait for it
This game has been on my wishlist for a while.
Like many other current indie -metroid- hollowvanias, Rune Fencer Illya is one I'm patiently waiting for.
From the mechanics to the art, it looks real promising, and I'm playing it when it come out. Day 1.
Nice! Definitely one to watch for!
Thanks for sharing, definitely going to go back this. Wish I had the spare $ to back the "beastmaster" tier.
I've actually been following this game for a long time! The dev is really cool too. I hope it reaches its funding goal!
I was following this game on Twitter and got me with the art and combat mechanics if it's as fun as i't seems I'll buy it from day 1
This game has been on my radar since it first started development. There is a passion for the craft that show in every frame. The spritework kinda reminds me of Cave Story a bit, simple but very charming.
This looks really cool, and I think the most promising thing about it is the passion that must be behind this game. Definitely gonna look out for this one
I did hear of this game prior to this video. Thatmnk you for the reminder though, since I haven't backed the project, nor knew of it was kickstarter'd.
This one has been on my list for a long time now :)
This looks great!
Wow this is so great I'm totally looking forward to it
The game has fishing, im sold
This has so much character. I hope it's super successful.
I love the animation style and pace of it!
Def got it on my wishlist
Hi everyone! Some others to look out for for fans of the genre are Glimmer in Mirror, Magenta Horizon, Enelia, The Last Case of Benedict Fox, Candle Knight, Elypse, Cavalier, Dreamless: The Madness from Sea, Count Pumpcula, Tevi, Ren: The Last Child, Nine Sols, The Devil Within: Satgat, Gold Project, Gesalt: Steam and Cinder, Overplasma, Ceplion, A Sister's Journey, Mira and the Legend of the Djinns, Slavania, Moadra, The Siege and the Sandfox, Lotus Knight, Doomblade, Bionic Slammer, Shyftyrs, Dewdrop Dynasty, Moonlight Pulse, Earthblade, Savior, Biogun, Morkull: Ragast's Rage, Fallen Tear: The Ascension, Chiaroscuro, Cookie Cutter, Kingdom Shell, Lore Finder, Silent Santicado, Gigasword, Hippoxxus, Meifumado, Lucid, Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus, Velaster, Animosa, Mandragora, Playbound, Being and Becoming, Akatori, The Light of the Darkness, The Perfect Pencil, Neon Moon, Selini, Faeland, Souno's Curse, Nara: Facing Fire, Peaky Circus, Aestik, Dusted Dusk, Jester's Quest, Blazblue: Entropy Effect, Back to Home, ESDRAZ: The Throne of Darkness, Astra: Fading Stars, He's Nut Your Princess, Crowsworn, The Last Faith, Biomorph, Heart Forth Alicia, Rebel Transmute, Last Vanguard, Umbra Sepulcri, Animal Well, Momodora: Moonlit Farewell, and Hollow Knight: Silksong
Jesus Christ you went hard on this. Lotus Knight is a ripoff though. Maybe your list should be focusing on quality instead of quantity
@@xelith6157 yeah, there's probably some duds in there but you never know? I didn't expect Lone Fungus to be as good as it is.
@@xelith6157 I actually really like how Lotus Knight looks. It’s pretty much a fan build of Hollow Knight, but it does seem to be pretty well made, so I’m pretty excited for it.
Thanks for the vid, ill be waiting for the release, all the problems with combat you've highlighted - i feel them too, i hope all those things will get improved, i don't like restrictions on your stamina/mana/etc to make game harder, id much rather play a MUCH harder game but being able to utilise as many tools as possible (with some limitations of course but not like when i feel that i don't use my main powers AT all exchanging them for more convinient heals/dashes or anything like that)
Can't wait for the game to drop whenever it's ready!
This looks like a project worth checking out.
I've been following this for so long
Whoa, the riposte mechanic sound similar to what Ghost Song was originally going to do. Ghost Song didn't end up implementing that feature, but it still a darn good game. Interesting to see that idea get used, tho.
I'm always looking for a good Metroidvania as it's my favorite genre of games, especially since I recently completed the amazing Ender Lilies
I will be keeping track of this one
I hope that they present this to dunkey and his publishing company, I would love for this to get supported from Dunkey if its a amazing passion project!
5:57 I'm sold
I hope this’ll be available to all consoles when it comes out!!
I couldn't find a comment about this, but is the music in the video in-game music from this title? It was beautiful
I haven't even finished the video yet and im sold
I feel like for a game like this the Runes and Healing system ought to have different costs. Whilst in Hollow Knight there's that risk-reward when it comes to spending soul on spells or healing, it sounds like this game's systems actually discourage that. It's not like 1 rune use costs 1 hearts worth of healing, if you wanna be able to heal you can't use your rune at all because you need full glyph (or at least it looks that way)
So I suppose there's two solutions I can see:
1. Have Runes work on an ammo/durability system. You can experiment with a new one immediately with relatively low risk, you're encouraged to use it as there'll always be more runes to grab (except in bosses maybe), and it won't touch your healing reserve.
2. Reduce the cost of a heal, or rather increase the maximum glyph you can hold beyond what it takes to heal. That way you can build up a buffer that enables the use of Runes whilst not disabling your heal, and possibly with the right upgrades/build you could save up 2 heals if you're a particularly cautious player.
"This game looks pretty fun, I might try it out."
*sees fishing mini game*
Super hyped for this one
It also looks like it took inspiration from some zelda games and it used some sound effects that I noticed were used in botw when you heal and pick up rupees
From what I hear in the gameplay, the heart and coin sound effects comes straight out of Windwaker.
been waiting for awhile for this game
I was already sold on this game when the Kickstarter released, but now after watching this? This game looks so goddamn good!
this game looks so good
Hope they manage to balance difficulty well, with the few hearts health system (which is not my favorite approach) it seems extra crucial combined with the runic powers aspect. Aside from that, game looks super promising.
Was that jumping after defeating the boss you or Illiya celebrating? It was cute lol.
I can’t donate to the kickstarter yet but I hope I can before they take it down, im already looking forward to the release
This looks pretty cool!
Well, you've defenetly intrigued me...
From the footage, it drew a lot of inspiration from hollow knight, ori and blasphemous. All are amazing games. Can't wait to try this one out
Ahh this one has been on my steam backlog for a while now.
It looks so good, is this already out?
the glyph kinda reminds me of the soul mechanic from aria and darn of sorrow which i like a lot
Just like book covers, presentation does a lot of the heavy lifting in grabbing peoples attention, and I'd say they pretty much nailed it. Really dig the sprites, and the animations are REALLY good. So, they have my attention just from that, at least.
The healing sounds like a less punishing version of liltitales healing
2:30 That probably could've been worded better. 😂😂😂
I'm a Kirby fan.
I'm a Metroidvania fan.
I think I'll be a Rune Fencer Illyia fan.
oh whoa this is actually cool zamn
fire ily to death and ive been waiting for this game for a while now, but im not gonna watch this video because i really wanna experience it all myself when it finally goes public. i made that mistake with hk where i watched one of your speedruns before i had even finished it myself :'(
I predict that this is going to be a really great metroidvainia, reminds me a bit of a rougelike with the constant change of weapons and playstyles
I'll be watching out for this one
Fishing mini game? I'm in
Anyone noticed that during the boss fight showcase, there were a lot of legend of Zelda botw sound effects?
So, my 10yo daughter with red hair beat Hollow Knight last year, and loves reading and writing stories about feisty witches in training.
Will watch closely
Hmm... Thanks for hipping me to this one.
Honestly I had the same problem with not being able to cast many spells in Hollow Knight when I first played. I was often too scared to cast spells because it basically cost me a mask, so I would only cast when my soul was full, but even then I often forgot I even had spells by that point lol
