The Evolution of Snow White

- Walt Disney brought Grim Natwick onto the project because he had experience animating more realistic human characters. With Marc Davis as an assistant and by integrating the reference footage and some of the concepts of Ham Luske, Snow White over time became a sympathetic character that audiences could connect to emotionally. This is critical for the success of any Disney film, as the ones with lead characters who didn’t have this quality usually didn’t do well in the box office (like Pinocchio, Alice in Wonderland, and Sleeping Beauty).
Depsite the talent and influence of Milt Kahl, the prince was extremely hard to animate (and make masculine and believable) so that’s why most of his scenes were removed from the film.
There were also color explorations done for Snow White’s dress to make it different shades of yellow/orange instead of blue and yellow. Color was a big concern because Technicolor was a relatively new technology at the time, and there was a genuine concern that the bright colors of animation would be too strong for audience’s eyes 🙈

@@disneycicerone i'm actually related to grim natwick!!!
I'd love to see the original animation for the Prince that was dropped
Huh, interesting. I find Sleeping Beauty far better than Snow White, tbh.
the way alice in wonderland, pinocchio, and sleeping beauty are some of my favourite disney films... 💀💀 the lion king is # 1 tho
❤
Fun fact! They used actual make up on the animation to get it just right! So Snow White, is ACTUALLY wearing blush!
Yes the women in ink and paint knew what they were doing 😊
@@disneyciceroneWhen Walt found about that he said that it looked good but he was concerned that the ink and painters wouldn’t know where to apply the makeup. One of the ladies replied “Mr Disney, what do you think we do every morning?”
@@JPMM316 icons fr
That’s actually a myth. They used a rose colored dye that bled into the animation cells which gave it that lovely blended effect. Ruth Thompson (one of the cell painters) even spoke about how hard it was to find something to give Snow White her famous blush, remarking how they even tried makeup but that it didn’t work.
That’s cool! Explains how they got her to look so powdery! Idk how else to describe that soft look that only the makeup of that time seems to have been able to achieve.
They weren’t just deciding on the style for Snow White either. Snow White literally set the standard for _all_ feature length animation in the 20th century. Every movie Disney made after that was heavily influenced on Snow White’s animation style. And every movie made by different studios obviously took inspiration from Disney.
And then Osamu Tezuka was inspired by Disney and he set the standard for all manga, and therefore anime, to follow.
Ok, but the one with the pink dress that's right after the one that looks like Betty Boop is so darn cute!
Yeah I think that the version with the pink dress looks better than the original
Ikr, that's SO MUCH NICER, its almost even peach!!
Strangely enough she still appears in that dress in a lot of media and merchandise.
@@stardustflavor4165 those spider fingers tho
@@Nexils One thing that was mentioned in a recent History Channel documentary series about Disney, it took them a while to design the movie, and while they were working on it, they already had an idea, or their marketing manager did, of starting merchandising efforts before the movie was released. They desperately needed the money to fund the movie when they were going bankrupt. So some of that merchandise released before the movie had some of the old design features and it might have lingered a little in its effects.
The first one looked like something from The Corpse Bride 💀
@@Char10tti3 I thought something similar.
Yes, she's so beautiful with that design 😍
Right?! That’s SO cool!
@@Char10tti3 it looks like the worm lol
@@oliviaaaaaa47 what? 😂 I think those big eyes are par for Corpse Bride.
Omg they should've kept the regency dress with the veil and the crown it was SO lovely 🤧
Agreed! I like that one better than the one, they finally settled on.
it was the best design!!!
It should have been the wedding dress. It's so regal and elegant looking!
@@justanawkwardnerd Yes, it feels more like a queen's dress than a princess's dress. If they had made a sequel a few years after the first movie, that design would've been lovely in it!
@@sourdrop Exactly that!!! I would love that for her!
That dress with the veil was adorable
The blue one, right? I wish they’d gone with that! That was gorgeous. And I think it suited the setting better.
@@justanotherhappyhumanist8832 It was really cute but I think the one they went with suited the time period (and thus setting) better. The blue gown was an empire waist gown so it would be more suited in a story set in the 1810s. Snow white is based in 1500s, and while the dress they chose is far from accuracy, the silhouette (and the bodice) is more accurate.
The movie is almost 100 years old, and to this day it is still one of the best looking animated movies. They just don't make them like this anymore.
It was incredibly well done especially for innovating an entirely new kind of animation
its 87 years old-
@@Cozy-Cooking yeah, almost 100
@@nakirx still has 13 years to go. 2037 is ages away
Still better then new snow white live action movie
Snow White with a little vest is so cute!
Right?
i missed that so i need to rewatch lol
that one was adorable
Love the designs with her veil and crown! I wish there were special editions of her with this design
"As the original story told"
Every adaptation should've been like this
I like the flowy empire style dress on her. It looks so pure and elegant.
I know! I know!!! Snow White’s my favorite, and I have several art of and the making of Snow White books! I love them!
Truly a fascinating study on character development 😊
Oh my gosh, never knew these. She's my favourite princess too. But the prince looks so handsome in sketches. I don't like how they went with a round face for him.
So Disney almost made Snow White with red hair before the anime "Snow White with the Red Hair" 😂. That's pretty funny.
Nothing is truly new 😂
The Lion King was completely stolen from Hayao Miyazaki's "Kimba The White Lion" but I can't complain because of the soundtrack they got out of it, and the musical with the predominantly African/African American cast which is my favorite musical to ever exist 🤧
that exists ? i need to see that. lol
@claireschweizer4765 omg i used to love that cartoon😭
@@claireschweizer4765 It wasn't Hayaon Myazaki who made Kimba.😅 The Manga was from Osamu Tezuka and the animation from Hayashi Shigeyuki and Tsuyoshi Matsumoto.
say it louder : the snow white WE KNOW & LOVE
I wish they kept her veiled tiara, it’s so pretty!
I wish they had kept the veil look, I always thought that looked so cute
I actually like a lot of that concept art better than her final design.
To be honest it looks just like a magical movie we expected and i think it is about colour grading because in well scene she really looks fair enough.
Thanks for another great video! I had no idea that Snow White had that big of a character design change.
You’re welcome!
The ebony hair is from the most famous telling/print of the fairytale, in the first (German) written version she had ebony eyes and yellow/wheatcolored hair.
So the blonde isn't that far fetched.
Yeah I think that’s why they felt they could play around with it.
Literally no one knows that version. I've been collecting fairy tale books for a while now and never heard of that (I'm also German)
That and the literal Snow White skin
@@katharinajosephinemuller8526 not snow wheat lol
@@squidwardwithoutaclue das habe ich auch noch nie gehört, und ich hatte die alten Märchenbücher von meiner Mama. 🤷
I like the A-line design with the crown and veil/train that is shown here as a sketch. The one where her puff sleeve dress is slightly off the shoulder.
funny how they were worried about snow white’s design looking “too cartoonish” but most recent princesses have been so overly stylized!
What a great production! Bravo to all 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I gotta say I love the movie ending bc everyone lives, but as far as the story and the emotional impact, this ending was beautiful and heartbreaking and it made me cry more than the movie!
She definitely looks damn pretty in all her early drawings ❤❤❤
This is absolutely FASCINATING. Love it and thank you for sharing!❤️
Wow so much work put into making snow white until now
It would have been nice to have more screen time of the prince.
I agree, but they struggled to animate him (and all of the early Disney princes, tbh)
Yuhh
@@altalia07 The prince is only in the film for less than 5 minutes and nothing is really said about him other than him being Snow White’s true love. Who is he and what is his story?
@@dannydubrowa5271 What we really needed instead of a live action is a prequel story explaining how he got there
You know, I always found it ironic when "feminists" complain about Snow White's demureness and passive qualities in over relying on the men in the story when the prince has barely any screen time and is not even a character. He has one role, and that role is to be the happily ever after for Snow.
Snow White with her gown similar to her time period looks cool
This was the first animated movie I saw & I was charmed and fell in love with the genre.
Fun fact... the live lady they used as a model for snow white ended up as a famous dancer and actor in MGM movies in the 40s and 50s. She married Gower Champion and they were a dancing duo. Very talented.
The raven hair is the BEST choice, in my opinion. It REALLY brings out her fair skin tone because of the contrast. Snow White is my favorite Disney Princess!
I like Beauty and the Beast as an overall movie much better, but if we're just going based on princesses alone, Snow White is definitely it for me
Her doll of disney is so cute and pretty she looks even more beautiful than the cartoon
Hair Black as Night Skin White as Snow Lips Red as Blood love this Version of the Beauty of Snow White
Your voice sounds just like a Disney princess
Also I love your Snow White ears!❤
Aw thank you! 🥰
One of my favorites was the blonde!Snow White in the doorway and the actor they based her on. I love how playful and sweet looking actor she is, and how the team really tried to copy her body language for the Snow White we know and love. I love this!
You have such a calming voice!
Thank you 🥰
the most recent design for snow white: rachel zegler in a cheap costume from spirit halloween!
I like the Betty boop-snow white's face! So cute!
I actually have a compilation of short bed time stories that have a lot of classic fairy tales, including Snow White, and the version illustrated in the pages is very similar to 0:46 Snow White, but with longer hair and a different face shape. It's very beautiful to see her with different gown designs.
Also the colors of the dress were changed, from orange top, yellow skirt and white slashed sleeves with yellow inside, to the blue top, yellow skirt and blue sleeves with red inside that we know today.
Yes, they decided the colors were too close to each other so they changed it for contrast.
Thank you so much for this ❤❤❤
You're welcome 😊
I love the second design. That one is super cute!
I'm living for these
The prince and snowwhite matching hair styles in the early sketches was goals to me
So the thing with Snow White is that they basically created a new animation technique in order to make her movements more realistic as well, which they had been working toward in their shorts, most notably the Goddess of Spring. There is a whole lot of trivia about Snow White that if you look into the history of it you realize how big of an impact it had on animation today. It wasn't the first feature length animated film ever, and it wasn't Disney's first rodeo with color (they had plenty of practice with their Silly Symphonies), but they truly made a work of art.
I wish we would’ve gotten a wedding scene in Snow White.
Love her! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
I looooove the idea of a redhead snow white so much, she looks so cute
That was so cool seeing the white costume reference. Really neat
Why would they change her hair colours? The original source even says, "hair black as ebony, skin white as snow, lips red as blood"
@@martaleszkiewicz5115 At the beggining of the S. XX century there were still people that confused the Princess Snow White with the Snow White from Snow White and Rose Red who was blonde, and they even confused princess SW with Rose Red which had red hair
Disney influenced a lot of my Childhood. Blessed to be a 90's early 2000 Child.
The ones that are more realistic with the crowns are so cute
These earlier drawings are so cute!
I wish the Snow White dress in the live action movie was designed with more of the realism in mind, like some of the earlier designs shown here. It would've been cool if her outfits were designed more like Aurora's in Maleficent -- time and personality taken into account. In general, it would've been better if it were modelled after Maleficent's successful film as a whole... 😅
Considering that Snow White is the second animated movie in history that explains all the trouble they had.
Love it love it love it!!! I’m a big snowbird fan ❤
Back when *DISNEY* was *DISNEY.*
That second sketch looks so much like our modern Disney princesses !
I really like the sketch at 0:51 ❤
I love concept art so much ❤
“.. a little bit too mature”
the design: -a child-
I love her cute cartoon designs!
The ONLY snow white we will always love! 😉
"looked a little bit too mature" how?? She looks like an actual child in that drawing, which is probably better than drawing the 14-ish year old like a grown woman.
I loved the dresses with the veils and caps 😭
Snövit ....❤❤❤❤Walt Disney ....
This movie used a combo of two different animation techniques. For all the human characters, the animators used rotoscoping. Part of this process is filming live actors acting out the scenes then tracing those big dynamic movements for animation. It’s not simply tracing as the process requires the animators to keep the movements and proportions from getting out of wack. The dwarves and animals were done with standard hand cell animation where the figures were hand drawn for each frame.
Fascinating!
“Snow White we know and love today.”
Correction: You mean the 1937 version.
The Snow White “today” is a bitter, snooty (not white) “girl boss” who don’t need no man, & instead of cleaning the dwarves’ cottage with her cute forest friends to thank them for taking her in, she barges into their lives and barks orders at them because it’s too “sexist” to be feminine, sweet, domestic, and in love with a prince.
Our generation owes Walt a BIG apology.
By the Snow White we know and love today I meant the classic one. No correction needed. 😊
@@disneycicerone I know what you meant, hun. I just hate how Disney is trying to replace the classic one for a modern one. The correction part was sarcasm more than anything.
I just want to know how they put so much time and effort into making Snow so wonderful in her first film... And then they just completely gave the new live action an unflattering dress wasit line and twrrible hair?
I do wish they had referenced this concept art more for the live action.
I love the braided hairstyle!
Imagine being able to say that snow white was modeled after you! ❤❤❤
@elsvaughn7959 They also used a human model when they eventually had to draw Tinkerbell; her husband recognized her by her hips.
And now we have lord farquad😢
from what my animation teacher told me, who used to work at disney, a lot of the human animation in snow white is rotoscoped
It was and it wasn’t. It’s a complicated question 😂 sometimes they couldn’t use that because it made the animation look terrible.
Yes! Couldn't put my finger on it. She has that Betty Boop eyebrows
THEY MISSED OUT ON THE MEDIEVAL AND THE EMPIRE DRESS NOO
Now she's Dirt Brown for BlackRock Disney.
I feel like the Betty Boop guy's design actually made her look the most her age
She was inspired by an Icelandic girl actually. She's since passed away but her family collects snow white memorabilia because of that.
4:14 the fact that he knew that he was gonna fall in the water and he just simply quit rather than dealing with that broke me.
Pretty cool!
This is fascinating! I didn’t know any of this
She's pretty cute as Betty boop too.i like how she plays Cinderella too❤
Glad I watch untill the end, lots of interesting information
And to this day I still haven’t seen the whole movie. Every time I tried to watch it her singing put me to sleep. Even mid day😂😂😂
would love if you did a video abt helene stanley!
The veil dresses were closer to it's time, I think.
aaaaw i love that betty boop cartoon style! ❤
Snow white is the closest i get to seeing a princess that looks like me, (missing curly hair since its only used for villains or different ethnicities) but its bouncy enough for me.
-Evil queen: - “mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?”
-mirror: …. “ really??….YOU!.. JUST YOU!!
“THE END”
0:43 and 0:46 are so beautiful!
They were figuring out artstyles before we did ToT
I cant wait to see the snow white movie coming out by the dailywire. Dont care for dailywire, but its going to be an amazing movie.
this was lovely
They took large design inspiration from a teenage Hedy Lamarr (in her Austrian movies) and the resemblance is uncanny!
Apparently there is a semi-official version of Snow White with blonde hair that's why Apple from Ever After High is blonde
Now she’s ✨HISPANIC✨
