      It was not that unusual to happen in the era either and it’s shown in many 50s films too. The marriage was more important than the wedding, even if some had bigger ones.
      The outfit color is a tad odd however. I would have picked grey. This is a couple of decades earlier but Carole Lombard wore a beautiful grey suit to her wedding to Clark Gable (the wedding was simple since both had divorced before and that matter back then). It still got the fanfare of wedding ballgowns since it was a celebrity wedding.

      @@sarasamaletdin4574 Maybe it's a subtle hint that Anita had been married before? Back in the early and mid 20th century, women who were divorced or widowed often chose off white or another colour for their wedding dresses. One of my American relatives chose a pale pink dress when she married in the 1950's because her first husband sadly passed away and it was seen to be bad taste to wear pure white if you had been married before.

      The end of Aladdin with its fireworks and Aladdin and Jasmine flying off after kissing suggests marriage. But the sequels retconned it. • @zhanelv9459
      @zhanelv9459 Месяц назад +17

      @@brianahyler381 I don't think animation quality is what matters here. They didn't need better animation not to make her wedding dress white just because that's the tradition in Western society. They could use another colour, and add something like a gold jewellery on the neck, looking like several round pieces of gold and that would already make her dress look at least not so western

    • @brianahyler381
      @brianahyler381 Месяц назад +19

      @@zhanelv9459 I guess I should have gone more in depth. Unlike the Disney movie studios, who would actually research cultures and have a whole secondary department dedicated to trying to make the film mass marketable, the tv animation studios were given a short deadline and no real assistance. There WAS going to be a different wedding outfit for Jasmine. Her purple outfit was supposed to be it. The Movietoons studio in Singapore changed it because they wanted to reduce the animation needed on her outfit, when they tried the purple set from the original film the difference in animation quality was too noticeable. This was an actual concern for the department at the time. TV animation used less frames per second so it was cheaper but couldn't handle the same effects. Since this was direct to VHS, they just didn't care for the international demographics, it was only marketed for western audiences. This is all to say; the reason Jasmine is in an ugly white gown instead of a more bedazzled version of the purple one like was originally intended, is because the studio needed to animate a movie as cheaply as possible. since the primary demographic was western kids ages 4-13, they weren't going to spend time making a more culturally accurate outfit, as the reasoning was young western kids might not get that it was supposed to be a wedding if they didn't see a white gown.

      @@brianahyler381 I see. However, one thing I don't agree with is that children wouldn't understand it was a wedding dress if it had been made of different colour. They are not stupid. I am not from a Western country, but in my country wedding dresses (not traditional/historical ones, the western style ones which is the majority) are mostly white. And still I never found it hard to in understand that those dresses in cartoons and films I watched were for wedding, even though they didn't look like usual wedding dresses.

    A note on Katrina's wedding dress. During the time period, it was not common to wear white, it wasn't until Queen Victoria that it became the norm. Most woman up until then even wealthy women would wear their best dress. Many times their best Sunday attire. Or if very poor what ever they had. Honestly, I just love how her 1st movie ended without a wedding, because her story wasn’t about it anyway. It was about protecting your family, your country. And I love the original story in which she were never been revealed as a woman, not until long after the war had ended and a general offer her to married his daughter. At that point she had to explain and uncover her secrets. However, the general absolutely respected her as a warrior and a general that had done so much for the country. So he never public her secret. She retired and came back home and live happily with her family and doing whatever she wanted.
      Plus, as an asian, wedding at that time isn’t a good thing for women anyway. sure Shang could be nice as a lover. but at that time that place, once you married a man, your social status literally instantly became his slave basically. A man could had as many wife as he want and even kill his wife without any consequences, a woman would be tortured to death if she is caught being raped.

      @@trinhvietanh9521same. Personally I think Mulan should’ve just stayed single instead, but I still actually really liked Mulan 2, mainly because of the princesses and their adorable relationships with Mulan’s comrades. It’s similar with Pocahontas, I actually kinda dig the ending didn’t go with Pocahontas and John Smith getting together or married. A huge reason is BECAUSE that wasn’t the point of Pocahontas’s story, nor was marriage a be all end all like in the Little Mermaid or other princess movies. Yeah I still hate the sequel, but I also found it completely unnecessary as a continuation for Pocahontas’s story and I personally think Pocahontas should’ve just remained single. I know back then a requirement for Disney Princesses and non like Esmerelda or Meg was “they had to have a love interest” and it really wasn’t until Merida came up that the requirement was changed. And despite I personally don’t like Brave, I do like how it changed official princesses weren’t required to have a romantic subplot or love interest to qualify for the lineup. Frankly I’m a little confused as to why Mirabel isn’t in the lineup with how fairly popular Encanto still is

      @@kristinahuchison2511 Series are often not considered canon just like direct to video sequels. And I hate how anti-marriage Disney is nowadays, especially in that stupid Tangled series where they literally portray marriage as a prison for Rapunzel even though in the movie she loved him so much that she wanted to give up everything just to save him. I really hate that! Whoever considers marriage to be a prison is either not with the right person or shouldn't have a relationship in the first place because then they are subconsciously thinking about cheating or breaking up! But when you truly love someone, you want to marry them and don't reject them because you feel like it means you have to give up your freedom! This is such a red flag and just implies that he is not the right one for her and I don't believe she would truly be happy with him if even the thought of marrying him scared her so much at the beginning and continued to scare her for more than a year! I can't believe they are portraying that as love! It's not love and Flynn deserves better! And I hate the historical inaccuracy because back then people married early because that was the only way to truly be together and I hate it when the other princesses are criticized for marrying so early when that was how things worked back then especially for princesses and when they are so in love, it's completely ok to marry after a few months! But nobody waited years after becoming a couple back then to marry and nobody stayed together after one person literally rejected a proposal, heck even today no one should stay together after such a rejection and such a relationship could never work because then you have to different point of views and if she truly loved him, she would want to marry him and not see it as a trap! And I hate it even more because the original fairy tale is about why it was wrong to start a love relationship before being married and how dangerous it was and in the original she accepted his proposal the first time and she is one of the only princesses in fairy tales who literally accepts a proposal. In the other fairy tales except beauty and the beast, there are no proposals even if they got married. And in the first version of Rapunzel, called petrosinella she only wanted to leave the tower to be able to marry her prince! She saw marriage as a liberation and a chance to get out of an abusive household and certainly not as a prison! And she was so in love with her prince and he was with her and they knew marrying was the only way they could be together forever and also the right thing to do! So, to sum up, I'd say Disney's Rapunzel is now the complete opposite of the original and she shouldn't even be called that anymore! I bet the brothers grimm or basile would spin in their graves if they saw that stupid TV series! I really want to count it as not canon!
      And what I hate about the whole marriage Thing in this context is that they are basically saying that it's Not ok to marry someone whom you deeply and truly Love after a few months but it's OK to try to give up your entire freedom and basically your entire life for someone whom you Just met three days ago. If they Love each other that much that they would do Something Like that after only having known each other for a few days than their Love is so strong and true and then they could and should marry after a Short time Especially considering the time period the movie is Set where they could only truly be together after being married. And If Disney wanted to Show a couple Not marrying so soon they should have taken a different couple than Rapunzel and Flynn because they proved how deeply and truly they Loved each other after a few days and since they almost Lost each other it would make Sense that they wouldn't want to lose more time together after they saw how Short life can be and besides, their Story Takes place in a time where people married early. They should have rather Had Tiana and Naveen marry only after a few years because they dont seem Like they fit very well together and didnt try to die for each other after a few days and furthermore their Story Takes place in the 1920s, Not the 1700s. They would have been perfect for Not marrying immidiately, Not Rapunzel and Flynn who seem like the worst candidates for this in my opinion. And that whole rejecting marriage plotline is the worst Storyline I've ever Seen. They send the Message that marriage is a prison even though you Love each other and that is such a horrible Message. And it's Especially horrible how in the Episode beyond the Corona walls, it seems Like that she never wanted to marry him at the beginning of the Episode which raises the question why the hell she is even still with him If a life with him seems so horrible to her and also why the hell she wouldn't want to marry the man she Loved that much that she wanted to Go to prison for for all eternity in the movie. It Just doesn't make any logical Sense and is inconsistent with the movie and also the Wedding Short where she looked so deeply in Love and so incredible Happy. It Just doesn't make Sense that she would have rejected the proposal before. And whats worse is that in that Episode it seems Like she only changed her mind about marriage because Stalyan wanted him which makes it seem like she only wants him when another girl wants him which is so incredibly toxic. If someone considers marriage as a prison, then that means they are subconsciously thinking about cheating or breaking up! I analyzed this once in school about a book where a guy who considered marriage as a prison in a similar way as Rapunzel in this stupid series, ended up cheating on his girlfriend! And that is precisely what would happen in real life! When someone rejects marriage, the relationship is over!
      And I'm pretty Sure the writers of Tangled intended for tangled ever After to Take place shortly after the movie because the little girls of the movie seemed to be the Same age in the Short and Wikipedia also states it was originally intended to Take place immediately after the movie. The series Just doesn't seem believable and seems Like it Takes place in a completely different universe as the movie. And I Just can't consider it Canon because of all These reasons and it's obvious that it was written by someone else than the movie. So, Right now I Just Count it as Not Canon to still be able to watch the movie. If I Had to Count it as Canon, then I Wish Flynn would have stayed dead at the end of the movie and wasnt brought back to life. It would have been a very sad and tragic ending but it would have at least been better than showing such a toxic relationship between two characters who were both trying to sacrifice themselves for each other.

    I‘ve gotta defend Rapunzel here. It’s a German story and the dresses are clearly inspired by traditional southern German clothing. Especially the final look of the original movie resembles a Mieder, a blouse that is often worn with a skirt instead of a dirndl. And while it’s sad they reused it for the wedding it is true to modern reality that she might wear a a white version if traditional clothing rather than a classic wedding dress. I would argue Rapuzels dresses that are only inspired by traditional clothing is more acurate than most other „dirndls“ we‘ve seen in american media.

      I agree! There are also subtle details that differentiate it from her purple dress, and I’m sad she didn’t even point that out, instead making accusations of them being “lazy”. I LOVE her dress, especially with how it looks with her short hair, and I also think that the veil may reference how long her hair used to be. It’s simple and captures the style that she had throughout the first movie-if I ever had a wedding, I personally would choose a dress similar to hers. Is that lazy of me? Haha :D

    I never realized how much sense it made for Lottie to wear a pink wedding dress, it fits her character so well. Not just because she loves princesses and other girly things but it also shows that she's not as mature as Tiana and tends to be extravagant and spoiled, I don't think I've ever fully considered Tiana's lilly pad dress to be wedding attire either until now. I was so used to it just being a princess dress.

    Cinderella’s all the way! The first movie may be from the 1950s, but there is something so timeless and elegant about it that I wish I’d worn something similar at my wedding. The simple choker necklace is likewise timeless (I agree a string of pearls would’ve been more appropriate since she’s marrying into royalty, but then again, maybe the animators went with the choker as a reference to her humble beginnings).
    There’s some historical reasons for Katrina’s (and others on this list) dress not being white. Like you mentioned during Maid Marian’s part, until fairly recently, most Western brides just wore the nicest dress they owned at their wedding, regardless of color. White wedding dresses didn’t become the standard until the 1800s, when Queen Victoria got married. Wearing white was a status symbol, because it was so hard to clean and remove stains (even today: both my mom’s and my own wedding dresses have chocolate stains on the skirt. Guess we have similar tastes 😂).

    I thought Pepa's dress was a storytelling device. Her hair and face are also totally identical despite 20+ years passing. And it's not just her: Felix also looks totally identical, but in white. We're not seeing true events, were seeing Mira's interpretation of events as her aunt and uncle explain it to her because she wasn't born then. That's why "Bruno" looks like a total villain when he comes out in their retelling. Do you think he actually walked up with the Kubrick stare, glowing eyes and scheming hand gentures on the wedding day? No. But Mira is imagining it.
    We see this elsewhere in the movie too: Abuela telling Mirabel about her painful past in the beginning (and how her child mind processed it innocently) and then Mira "seeing" the events again as an adult through a much more realistic and anguished lens. I thought it was actually super cool and pretty comical that Pepa and Felix are wearing the same thing, but in white.

    I absolutely *love* Ariel's wedding dress and if I were doing this ranking it'd be #1 (no hate just stating my opinion). She's the Disney princess blueprint and so many of the princesses that came after her have been inspired by her. Yes I know she's not the first princess (shout-out to Snow White) but there's no denying how much Ariel influenced all the future princesses. Plus the way her wedding dress was reminiscent of her first pink dress I think was a beautiful touch since it was worn when Eric is first getting to know her. And then like you mentioned, the green piping referenced her time as a mermaid as well. Yes it's very of it's time and dated by today's standards, but in the context of the film, when the film was released, and Ariel's personality it's totally perfect.

    I think Anita and Roger had a vow- exchange- quick Church wedding, without much fervour. So maybe thats why the dress wasn't white.

    I love Maid Marian's dress the most because it's my all-time favourite Disney movie. Since childhood I dream of a camp in Sherwood forest ❤

    Lowkey offended that Calhoun's dress didn't rank higher because it's probably my favorite /j
    For real though, I loved hearing all the info behind the dresses and why they are styled the way they were, great video! 🤍

    First of all, congratulations!
    Second, this was a lot of fun! Tiana's swamp dress is probably my favorite, but Nancy's is really pretty too - the necklace is a cute detail that complements the neckline. And I love Cinderella's dress referencing her earlier ones! I'd definitely be up for more wedding dress videos.
