I don't think so, her stylist just copied pasted barbie looks. I mean it was fun, I loved it, but it wasn't original or creative, it was just wearing Barbie's outfits in real life Barbie Margot Robbie
@@amondadias that’s true but they did a lot of good creative touches as the press tour went on, her styling gets progressively more human looking. Her first looks (including hair and makeup) are super sculpted and stylized, but at the end of it (during the Oscar’s) she had natural looking hair and makeup with a black dress and America ferrera the one in pink
I think method dressing also speaks to the strength of a film’s costume design and its aesthetic. If a film doesn’t have a distinctive feel, then method dressing for it will either fall flat or be nonexistent because the star and their stylist have nothing notable to pull from or reference.
@@taegan1831 all films should have a recognizable style/style elements for each character. That's basic costume design. If the character doesn't have that either the writers the director or the costume designer (sometimes the actor) fcked up.
The thing is this for me: I agree that method dressing is a thing that could give some sort of message about the strength of the costume design's choice... On the other hand, I feel like sometimes this thing is treated as an "obligation" to prove that your movie has a theme/aesthetic to follow. I just don't feel that way about it. I think that the real thing that should give a message about the costume design's choice is... The movie itself. Sometimes you just want to be surprised by the movie itself.
@@Cheezybrie Now that you mention it, this could be why old movies tend to be more memorable - they had more emphasis on it back then. At least for the main characters. Makes a lot of sense.
Personally, I really enjoy method dressing & I like that it's picking up steam. However, I think we might start seeing more "fails" in the future, not just caused by bad timing/tone deafness (cough cough wear your florals cough cough) but weak styling. Part of what maked some of these past "successful" looks work is the use of detail & reflecting the character/movie (EX: Elle Fanning wearing these flowy, elegant, floral looks that feature tie backs to Sleeping Beauty or Margot Robbie recreating famous Barbie looks). It also requires a willingness to commit & being open to challenge/play around with personal style.
Yes, yes and yes. If a star isn’t willing to commit (like the Madame Web cast who thought wearing web-themed dresses was enough), then they shouldn’t do it at all. You have to go all in with outfits, hair, makeup and ENERGY for method dressing to work. As well as understanding the film/character you’re method dressing for.
Men's fashion has long been slow to evolve, so it's exciting to see how method dressing is shaking up trends. We definitely need more men embracing this movement!👏
It has always bugged me that men weren't allowed to play with fashion like women can. My dad was gressed by his daughters in the 70s. Pale burnt orange, soft butter yellow and the blue to match his eyes. Those were the suits. One sister made his ties. I was in charge of making sure he picked the right shirt and tie for the suit. Mom was in charge of laundry detail and ironing. We had so much fun dressing him and he REALLY enjoyed the attention he got at work.
A couple of method dressing omissions that I remember is Beyonce' for 2002's Austin Powers in Goldmember. She spent the majority of the run paying homage to 70s style with her outfits and hair. Another more recent example is the Cast of 2018's Black Panther. They all incorporated different styles and patterns from the African Diaspora into their red carpet looks, both the men AND women.
True, I think that's where I've seen the most men in recent years do a form of method dressing. Chadwick Boseman, director Ryan Coogler, Winston Duke, Tenoch Huerta, and Daniel Kaluuya all used the red carpet and press appearances to wear elements of their characters costumes, pieces actually used in the movie, or from their personal cultural background to play on themes in the movies. Even people who were not part of those the movies showed up at the premieres celebrating Afro-futurism. Lupita has been method dressing for a while too. She commited to wearing headwraps when she promoted the Queen of Katwe.
I'm not against method dressing when the actor understands it's purpose and how it relates to the characters/film. I think you can tell difference between someone doing it because they want to and someone doing because they think that's what they should be doing
im so glad this trend started because it was something i used to imagine id do if i was a celebrity, bc i love cosplay and costumes so id wanna do something inspired by the movie
the super mario bros movie went crazy with their inspired character looks and then in the summer we got all the inspired looks of barbie?!?! i was thriving
Same I so feel you on this! I still think this way myself as a creator I’m like if I was to ever somehow make it big I’d love to be able to method dress and go all out with it. Would be everything 😩😍
To me the biggest issue with the method dressing in the It Ends With Us press tour was more to do with a bigger issue the actress was having. She didn’t understand the movies, its themes, or her own character. She wore florals because she played a florist named after a flower instead of choosing to embody her character’s traits and role in the story. I think if she’d worn things more in line with the best looks from last years met gala, focusing not just on flowers but on a sense of decay and time running out, it would have worked. Even if she’d just highlighted the strength and resilience or the naïveté of flowers (those orchids encased in resin earrings come to mind) her looks would have fit the tone and message of the movie. Fashion and aesthetics are tools that you can totally use to reinforce even serious or heavy messages, you just have to be on the same page as your audience regarding what those messages are
Totally agree. She totally missed the mark :( For the florals, I feel what missed out on was the opportunity to play with flower language and color. Maybe pink and white flowers covering bruising blues and blooming purples and sickly yellow undertones-wilted flowers, even. For such a serious topic, subtle and modest clothing and a more muted color palette would work best. Purple eyeshadow that's subtle enough it could be cute and floral, but upon closer inspection, and taking the full look into account, are more likely to represent bruises. Pair that with a pink blush beneath the eyes to mimic eyes swollen from tears, then you have a look that represents domestic abuse easily. If asked about what's being worn, it would be the perfect opportunity to bring awareness to domestic violence. Total missed opportunity and very poorly handled on her part. Every method dressing should occasion should pay homage to some element of the film. Whoever was in charge of the wardrobe didn't understand seem to understand that, unfortunately.
She could use flowers as a symbol of resilience, like the flowers in winter or fkowers that blossom in spring, but she used flowers as something fun and bubble party
I think it was Haute LaMode who said that a certain level of fantasy is required for method dressing to be successful. Example: Margot Robbie dressing as Barbie for 'Barbie', perfect example of mixture of fashion, promotion and fanservice. vs. Blake Lively dressing in florals while promoting 'It ends with us'… Total failure, abort! Run! Why are you worried of your outfits while discussing such a serious topic? You should be talking about domestic violence, support victims and giving resources! And talking about your booze/shampoo/whatever brand. Are you serious? What a dumpster fire... Run, girl! RUN!
the weirdest thing about blake lively's "it ends with us" wardrobe (to me) is the distinct lack of purple. blake is more respected for her style than her acting talents so, while tone deaf, i can understand why she wanted to method dress for the film's promo... however making the theme "flowers" (all because the protagonist is a florist and has a dumb flower name) was an incredibly stupid and ridiculous choice. lily blossom bloom's flower shop barely even factors into the story, ffs. i feel like the obvious choice shouldve been that blake just parade around in her usual style (so she can be placated and still have her so-desired "barbie" moment), but mute some of the flashier-aspects of her style and make an effort to highlight purple as the main colour in her outfits in order to (both) show respect to the cause (the purple) and demonstrate the serious and mature subject matter of the film (muting her style-slightly, and leaning towards sleeker choices; i.e, megan thee stallion's court outfit)
Also, her outfits looked bad. I feel, like a tasteful flower-themed outfits and the right communication would have made her go viral! She could have linked the flowers to survivors' resilience and ability to keep appreciating beauty, even in the midst of tragedy. Edit: the ugliness of some of these outfits was a genuine surprise as most of us have come to appreciate her safe but efficient Met Gala looks.
I only know what I know about Blake Lively and her film through word of mouth and some short vids so I won't say I'm an expert. But in regards to her method dressing, my o ly suggestion I can have that others have not said was to maybe use the Language of Flowers into her clothing. Taking the communicating through a step further. Like incorporating a flower and its meaning into her clothes that matches with her characters journey. But like I said I'm no expert, just gonna ask for some thoughts on this suggestion?
Elle Fanning's press tour for Maleficient: Mistress of Evil was so amazing. I know the fashion girlies know her, but she doesn't get enough flowers for her method dressing from the general public, not just as aurora but also for The Great.
As soon as you mentioned Halle Bailey, I couldn’t help but think of the ocean themed outfit she wore at Disney land when she performed part of your world because she looked so ethereal. I also hope that with Wicked part 1 and 2 being released, we’ll see a review of both movies from you!
I would love to hear your thoughts on the Black Panther cast and how the male actors and director participated in method dressing. Could you do a follow-up video on all of the cast of Black Panther and the associated fashion?
@@lastudentessaEspecially the photos of Chadwick Boseman are some of the last images of him looking healthy before his untimely death. I absolutely loved his red carpet look at the 2018 Met Gala.
the best types of method dressing is when the looks are less costumey, that only works if the movie gives space for that (barbie). I think zendaya’s looks always work because the perspective is always from a fashion standpoint rather than making a costume. When I see her looks, I still always see zendaya and not her trying to recreate her character. I hope that for the future, if people adopt this more, they will make more interesting choices than just looking like they’re wearing a costume.
Method dressing for me, it feels actors having fun with their roles and cosplay. It often make actor not feel alike this isnt just another paycheck (in my oppinion.)And we can always tell when it's forced or not.
Except when it gets obvious it's one. Many actors and actress care for their craft but it doesn't mean they have to keep up the "method" while on press conference.
Zendaya sold me on method dressing with the challengers press tour, it was perfect, every single time. Having seen both times that Blake caused controversy with her method dressing I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't on purpose, bad press gets people talking. (Think her hair care thing in which her hair doesn't even look good) It does make me feel bad for women cause it feels like it's something the industry is going to demand from them but not of the men.
I recently watched the documentary "In Vogue" and also taking into account the recent VMAs red carpet... Madonna's influence on pop culture specifically in fashion is something that is not talked about much and sometimes I feel like there is an attempt of "disappear" that influence... for example the other day a friend dressed in a pastel silk gown that looked like underwear and the cones of the bra were slightly set, with a leather jacket, she also wore some earrings in the shape of cross and on her right arm she wore many black bracelets, everyone at the party told her that her look was very "Madonna-esque"... and she just didn't understand, she showed me images of a Vogue editorial where she had taken her inspiration and she said that Madonna was not in it and that the editorial was also from the 90s and that Madonna was only from the 80s... lol The editorial in question was "Wild at Heart" by Peter Lindbergh for September 1991... in which Anna Wintour refers to as "Madonna meets Brando." To this very day it seems very bizarre to me how there are people who think that Madonna was a local girl from Michigan who had a one hit wonder and then disappeared from the face of the earth. 😂
Zendaya dressed her way into a Hollywood career. She had a mid tv show on Disney and was largely being forgotten, so she began dressing as a serious actress and attended red-carpets she had little to no business going to…until she was perceived as one. 😂
I'm impressed with the effort it takes to commit to method dressing and the creative approaches taken to it. It was very interesting to see examples of actors method dressing before the late 2010s and 2020s.
Personally I like method dressing for my own regional theatre roles, because I’m self obsessed and think entirely too much of myself, but it’s really fun and I can’t recommend it enough
This trend touches on “cosplay” rather than focusing on famous people’s privilege and beauty. It’s still unattainable d mostly a marketing strategy but at least it inspires people to be more creative in their own dressing too. I remember the times when all interviews started with “who are you wearing?” As much as I love fashion, I wouldn’t want to go back to those days.
It's the same but different aproach. The clothes are still designer work and more unattainable than before. Having said that, I agree on the creative part. That's undeniable.
I think method dressing is used to show the actor is committed to the role, to show the public they were the right choice. Also, 99 percent of movies now are based on pre existing media, so people might have higher expectations than ever for actors to prove they’ve done their research for a project.
It's kind of a dangerous line to burnt out if we think about it. Like commitment to a theme for so long with production, then promotion, the releases, then international promotion..
Margot Robbie for Barbie and Zendaya for spider man, dune, and the challengers are my favorite. I also like Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo for wicked, and I also can’t wait to see what they wear for the actual press tour
I love method dressing when it works. I feel like what's missing from this video is not mentioning "Disney Bounding" which started around 2011-2012. I feel that its rising popularity with normies has made it more standard around dressing like a character, without it being a costume, to get around theme park rules and the rise of social media. So when Elle and Angelina were dressing like Aurora and Maleficent, for the film, people referred to them as doing disney bounding. It has since gone beyond disney into any sort of fandom, of going to events, movies, places wearing clothes inspired by that fandom.
Really interesting look at this subject! I love variations on a theme, so I'm delighted by method dressing and look forward to more. Side note, I think if the Ends With Us marketing team and Lively had treated the movie's theme with the appropriate gravity in trailers and interviews, Blake could actually have worn florals with abandon -- just frame the motif as an empowering statement about how we can "blossom" when we break free of violent or toxic relationships. It'd be easy to point out that flowers are symbolic of hope and resilience: they're fragile, yet powerfully beautiful when they're able to grow freely. In a healthy environment, they thrive. I guess what I'm saying is, Blake, if you need someone to write you press statements for the sequel, I'm unemployed/available
Method dressing makes these events actually interesting to me. Ye, show me the vibe of your character and let me decide if I like the aesthetics enough to watch it. Most recent trailers fail to inspire me enough to move my butt to the cinema, this works better on me
Love this video, it's like my eyes are eating popcorn. I will say that I am exhausted at the internet's organized attempts to get me to hate Blake Lively.
I love this trend so much. I love themes. I’m the type of person that gets excited with lots of ideas so themes kind of give me some boundaries to focus on. There are so many different worlds and characters in film and tv so i like when actors bring that into real life with fashion!
I like your videos and how you explain a lot about fashion keep up the good work they are cozy videos that keep my mind away from what’s going on in the real world
I like method dressing, but I miss the days when celebrities styled themselves. People got to see what they actually wore. Now, all I see are looks from stylists. It makes these events less whimsical for me. It's no longer a fancy party, it's a work event. I love an over-the-top outfit, so I'll enjoy it until it becomes oversaturated.
As someone who loves pulling inspiration from my favorite characters in my daily looks, I love seeing method dressing! It's like a puzzle -- how to reference a character or concept in an outfit when not trying to replicate their look exactly (or simply can't). It's a great way to get creative with your everyday life, and to add a little whimsy to the daily grind.
Madonna was absolutely serving during the Evita press tour 😍 I didn’t even think of her being the first “method dresser” but that shows what an innovator she is. It’s also silly that people criticized her for that because Eva Peron was notorious for her love of fashion
Barbie's marketing was the only reason I went to the cinema in YEARS. And it was for both Barbie and Oppenheimer! That and Dune. I feel like interesting fashion looks and name recognition are a very big factor here
Wicked is perfect for method dressing. You already saw it with many of the actresses who played the parts in the stage shows. The pink-green combo is just so striking and I cannot wait to see more amazing duo outfits in the weeks to come.
Edward Bernays, the father of propaganda/Public relations, created the advertising for women to smoke to help the women's movement in the 20's. He's the nephew of Sigmund Freud. The founder of Netflix is related to them.
Margot Robbie's Barbie was impressive. She wasn't just referencing Barbie, she straight up recreated some of Barbie's most iconic looks. Collectors were salivating waiting for what's next and it made Barbie fanatics realize the movie wasn't just a cash grab, but a genuine love letter to Barbie and what the doll meant for little girls and older fans alike
the barbie press tour was honestly my favorite part of 2023, and i always love seeing zendaya and jenna on red carpets because they go all out and they always look beautiful while doing it
One of my favorite examples of method dressing is probably the most subtle. I always loved the way Demi Moore showed up to the Striptease premiere with a shaved head and a dress showing off her jacked arms. Instead of doing the expected seductress style, she chose to get people talking about the more important film, G.I. Jane.
imo i felt like little women 2019 would’ve been a lot of fun if the cast did method dressing for the press run. like i have specific ideas for the looks that could’ve been done with the march sisters alone 😭 outfits specifically tailored toward each characters’ personalities 💔
I really like method dressing. It makes movies feel like an event I want to participate in, instead of just another piece of content out in the ether that I’ll forget exists.
20:35 I feel that method dressing could have worked for It Ends With Us if it had been done with more sensitivity and consideration. The florals could have been used as a symbol against domestic violence instead of just being a flashy dresscode
I'm here for the rise of method dressing but let's be 10000 percent honest with ourselves we ONLY truly get it from the woman on the tour. I want to see all actors really LEAN in to that press tour of WHATEVER their touring for because like you said, that's the whole point. To draw as much intrigue or dissertation around whatever there promoting. What I'm tired of seeing are all the woman pushed to do this while the men are still giving the "ME just being here is enough vibe" it's glaringly obvious (not that we expect much from men on the carpets PERIOD but, many have tried and are SUCCESSFUL at it, it truly does add to a movies whole aura good or bad when the WHOLE cast shows the same level of dedication) Let the fun and creativity of method dressing sweep all aspects 😂❤I do it and I'm not a celeb like Zendaya & Larson said it makes me feel more confident heading into particular situations I'm not versed in (job interviews, matching the theme of a restaurant on a date etc.) Definitely a "security blanket" that has gotten me through my MOST stressed times🤲🏾the level "whimsy" you have to have while forming the fit lol kinda forces some of the tension out of whatever your walking into🤔best way to explain it
Madonna being the first to really commit makes sense she was (is?) obsessed with Eva Peron. begging to play her, asking for more songs, a more sympathetic angle on Eva (a highly controversial move) ,asking for Antonio banderas to play Che (the secondary lead) and personally asking to film in The Casa Rosada where the Argentine president works (like the White House except they don’t live there)
I absolutely love this trend, I hope it becomes standard practice because overall it makes press tours more interesting. I usually don't care about movie press tours and don't pay attention to them, however method dressing catches my attention and makes me more interested.
Emma Watson did the Disney Princess method dressing in 2017 for Beauty and the Beast before The Little Mermaid & Maleficent 2. She wore rose motives, french looks and yellow dresses.
When I was a kid, I remember seeing a picture in a magazine of an outfit Katy Perry was wearing when the Smurfs movie was out. She wore a white dress with Smurfette on it, blue heels, her hair was blonde, and her nails were painted blue. Also, my twin sister and I love wearing themed outfits when we go to watch movies. We’re going to watch Wicked, and I plan on dressing in a Glinda inspired outfit since I already like wearing pink, girly clothing, and she’s going to wear an Elphaba inspired outfit.
I'm 100% here for method dressing to promote movies with strong themes and aesthetics - genres like musicals, fantasy, or sci-fi. Like the movies essentially serve as your red carpet "themes" and imo it's easier to create a conceptual fashion look if you have an existing theme or aesthetic to draw from, instead of just winging it for every event. Being in the entertainment industry basically gives you carte blanche to be bold and creative with your fashion choices. And who doesn't love a cohesive aesthetic with attention to detail? Also, Zendaya is the queen and everyone else is just trying to catch up.
I wonder if instead of bright florals the whole time, had Blake mixed it up would it have been better? Perhaps maybe start with bright florals, then lose the colour look like a wilted flower somewhat broken, only to come back with more pastel look and then perhaps on release day back to those bright colours again. To show a tribute to supposed message of it ends with us. You can start out bright and yet have someone completely knock you down. But you can and will regrow and even brighter than before. 🌹🥀🌷🌹somewhat like this Or do a seasons changing, start with summer transition to fall, winter, spring and back to summer. Idk just spitballing.
May it long continue! It's a great marketing ploy and I enjoy looking at the outfits and appreciating the different and creative ways a film's theme is expressed.
For me personally, I believe that method dressing influences the growing trend of people dressing “on theme” to go to the movies and I love it! I really like fashion and with this instead of just wearing a blatant costume, you get to see various people have different takes on what is the theme of a movie and it just brings out so much creativity. It’s really nice and I think it could also help people who like to style and design. But it’s just a theory of mine, love your videos btw!❤
This surprised me! I would’ve assumed people were doing this for much longer. It just makes sense to me, but I also see now the influence of social media and modern streaming. Thanks for the research and video!
I am going to say something very mean 10:16 instead of using outfits to make people take her more seriously as an actress, she should have taken acting classes because she was so not good in that movie (neither Dane btw)
I like method dressing. It seems perfectly matched to the job of promoting a movie. Of course when you take a leap, sometimes you fall. Blake Lively's method dressing in the "It Ends With Us" tour, was a unicorn due to the on set and on tour turbulence. A course correction probably was not easy to attempt as I am guessing months go into the wardrobe planning for a tour. However, I feel that somewhere in Blake Lively's personal wardrobe were strong, structured, impeccably tailored garments that could be accessorized with hint of a floral for hair, jewelry or other accessories? That phrase attributed to Blake Lively, "grab your friends, wear your florals" made me imagine a wacky rom-com not a movie about DV. Publicists and stylists should take note of what went wrong and do better next time.
I think you're right that much depends on the film. Arty films about issues...? Maybe not so much. But big, fun blockbusters? Absolutely! Start the fun with the press tour, get people hyped. Heck, maybe they could find cheaper suggestions for people who go opening night. _Barbie_ was fun because really, you just grabbed something pink and you were part of the moment. But I think there could be simple things, too. Not necessarily merch, or tee shirts or logo'd-up items. But if the stars wore something on point that people could come up with their own version of relatively cheaply and easily, it would add the sense of being on a team, and wanting to go to the theater to be with other people who are also sporting the "secret handshake" clothes. Showing off your movie style, of course, is something that can only be done at public showings, not sitting around streaming at home. (I mean, you could, but it loses something if it's just you.) Do some TikToks or YT vids about, I don't know, how to get a good dragon scale look for the new Shang-Chi, or how to make a little dwarf hat for Snow White. Harry Potter was ahead of this curve with the ubiquitous house scarves, many hand-knitted. I think it's a good idea for getting people hyped for the public nature of mass entertainment.
I think it's important to note that the rise of method dressing for press tours follows the success of method dressing for the annual Met Gala, which only became a thing in the last 10-12 years. For fashion brands, reports point to the Met Gala being the number-one most impactful red carpet event of the year in terms of brand visibility and virability. It is no wonder that the movie industry follows suit and adapts their press strategy to mimic this effect through fashion, to the point where it's almost becoming a given that any major film's female lead is now expected to go full-on method during press tours.
Blake Lively’s method dressing would have been less tonedeaf if she’d done a little less and actually been sincere and honest during interviews instead of trite and flippant…. Not a bad idea to honor her character with flowers but a terrible execution.
I really love the method dressing it makes me wanna go see the movie dressed up to match the movie but I feel like since it’s becoming more popular celebs are gonna start method dressing for films don’t necessarily call for method dressing . In my opinion method dressing only makes sense if it’s a action or fantasy type of movie where it’s has its own world or specific time period but it’s it’s like a movie like anyone but you it would make no sense to method dress cuz those are regular people charcters in a real world it doesn’t have a theme
u cant outdo the doer ! zendaya is the one people always look to in any type of public event. i for one am always excited to see what her and law pull out. shes one of the only celebrities whos looks i look forward to !

the super mario bros movie went crazy with their inspired character looks and then in the summer we got all the inspired looks of barbie?!?! i was thriving
Same I so feel you on this! I still think this way myself as a creator I’m like if I was to ever somehow make it big I’d love to be able to method dress and go all out with it. Would be everything 😩😍
I'm not comfortable going to a movie unless i'm also dressed in harmony with the movie's theme/aesthetic.
She totally missed the mark :(
For the florals, I feel what missed out on was the opportunity to play with flower language and color.
This is brilliant
Zendaya is the Queen of method dressing!!
1000%! she makes it look so stylish with her vibe and it’s amazing
Really? I hate her method dressing. The armor suit for Dune is my least favorite red carpet look ever. I like Margot Robbie’s the best.
@@sweeney60 seems like you prefer less couture and more conventional clothing choices
i love both. i haven't seen zendaya wear a single bad thing@@sweeney60
@@sweeney60 just say you’re boring and basic
Run, girl! RUN!
Imagine if Julia Roberts had decided to dress as an atom of chromium while promoting 'Erin Brockovich'. Girl, dead. But literally.
the weirdest thing about blake lively's "it ends with us" wardrobe (to me) is the distinct lack of purple. blake is more respected for her style than her acting talents so, while tone deaf, i can understand why she wanted to method dress for the film's promo... however making the theme "flowers" (all because the protagonist is a florist and has a dumb flower name) was an incredibly stupid and ridiculous choice. lily blossom bloom's flower shop barely even factors into the story, ffs.
i feel like the obvious choice shouldve been that blake just parade around in her usual style (so she can be placated and still have her so-desired "barbie" moment), but mute some of the flashier-aspects of her style and make an effort to highlight purple as the main colour in her outfits in order to (both) show respect to the cause (the purple) and demonstrate the serious and mature subject matter of the film (muting her style-slightly, and leaning towards sleeker choices; i.e, megan thee stallion's court outfit)
@@misabelrodriguez1163 That would have been clever as well!
Elle Fanning's press tour for Maleficient: Mistress of Evil was so amazing. I know the fashion girlies know her, but she doesn't get enough flowers for her method dressing from the general public, not just as aurora but also for The Great.
totally! it was so tumblr famous but i rarely see modern pop culture communities mentioning it
As soon as you mentioned Halle Bailey, I couldn’t help but think of the ocean themed outfit she wore at Disney land when she performed part of your world because she looked so ethereal. I also hope that with Wicked part 1 and 2 being released, we’ll see a review of both movies from you!
Im so sad that the press looks were thousand times better than the ones in the factual movie
The Cinderella and Little Mermaid press tour were amazing❤
The red carpet is EXACTLY the place for a costume! 🤨🥰
To say otherwise is sooo out of left field, absurd!
Zendaya's spine dress lives in my head rent-free.
I feel like an idiot for only now realising that and her green/purple outfit were references to the movie's villains...
I quite enjoy method dressing, I think it's a route to introduce more creativity and fun into a red carpet when it's done well!
Yup!
I would love to hear your thoughts on the Black Panther cast and how the male actors and director participated in method dressing. Could you do a follow-up video on all of the cast of Black Panther and the associated fashion?
I mentioned this specifically in a reply to another comment. Those men were method dressing. They're the best recent male examples of it!
@@lastudentessaEspecially the photos of Chadwick Boseman are some of the last images of him looking healthy before his untimely death. I absolutely loved his red carpet look at the 2018 Met Gala.
20:01 florals for a florist? Groundbreaking
Okay Miranda 😂
😂
🏆
the best types of method dressing is when the looks are less costumey, that only works if the movie gives space for that (barbie).
Yesss I was just thinking this!! It’s them cosplaying off of the character they portrayed!!
@anniannianniii It's no different from what they do in Halloween.
Zendaya sold me on method dressing with the challengers press tour, it was perfect, every single time.
Having seen both times that Blake caused controversy with her method dressing I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't on purpose, bad press gets people talking. (Think her hair care thing in which her hair doesn't even look good)
It does make me feel bad for women cause it feels like it's something the industry is going to demand from them but not of the men.
She did method for spiderman and greatest showman way before Challengers and Barbie.
Zendaya and law roach really got all these actors method dressing at every premiere now. Iconic duo
I always liked the idea of method dressing. Oftentimes, people are better at doing that than matching the Met Gala theme.
18:42 Don't forget about Jack Black's Bowser drip! Honestly, he's tended to method dress for several of his most recent movies.
I recently watched the documentary "In Vogue" and also taking into account the recent VMAs red carpet... Madonna's influence on pop culture specifically in fashion is something that is not talked about much and sometimes I feel like there is an attempt of "disappear" that influence... for example the other day a friend dressed in a pastel silk gown that looked like underwear and the cones of the bra were slightly set, with a leather jacket, she also wore some earrings in the shape of cross and on her right arm she wore many black bracelets, everyone at the party told her that her look was very "Madonna-esque"... and she just didn't understand, she showed me images of a Vogue editorial where she had taken her inspiration and she said that Madonna was not in it and that the editorial was also from the 90s and that Madonna was only from the 80s... lol
The editorial in question was "Wild at Heart" by Peter Lindbergh for September 1991... in which Anna Wintour refers to as "Madonna meets Brando." To this very day it seems very bizarre to me how there are people who think that Madonna was a local girl from Michigan who had a one hit wonder and then disappeared from the face of the earth. 😂
Zendaya dressed her way into a Hollywood career. She had a mid tv show on Disney and was largely being forgotten, so she began dressing as a serious actress and attended red-carpets she had little to no business going to…until she was perceived as one. 😂
Thats pretty funny. Really puts the “dress for the job you want, not the job you have” phrase into perspective lol
I'm impressed with the effort it takes to commit to method dressing and the creative approaches taken to it. It was very interesting to see examples of actors method dressing before the late 2010s and 2020s.
Zendaya is the queen. I love method dressing and it really definitely helps a lot to promote the movie
Personally I like method dressing for my own regional theatre roles, because I’m self obsessed and think entirely too much of myself, but it’s really fun and I can’t recommend it enough
That's so cool!
I guess what I'm saying is, Blake, if you need someone to write you press statements for the sequel, I'm unemployed/available
if you made a chappell roan outfit video i think i'd die of happiness. i NEED your takes on her crazy camp loveably costumes
so excited to see more of the 'Wicked' looks, im already obsessed with what they've been wearing
I love method dressing it makes the movies feel like an event & it feels like a party you want to attend!
Well, of course, that's because it is Hollywood make-believe machine working. Somehow, the old ilusion found a new way to engage us.
No party better than a themed party
Method dressing makes these events actually interesting to me. Ye, show me the vibe of your character and let me decide if I like the aesthetics enough to watch it. Most recent trailers fail to inspire me enough to move my butt to the cinema, this works better on me
Love this video, it's like my eyes are eating popcorn. I will say that I am exhausted at the internet's organized attempts to get me to hate Blake Lively.
I think method dressing is actually a major factor in me discovering my love of fashion
I think a name that is not mentioned enough in Method Dressing is Vidya Balan. She’s so effortless.
Ya, I still remember her with her fake belly for Kahaani
Babe wake up a new moderngurlz video dropped!!
I’m up
I love this trend so much. I love themes. I’m the type of person that gets excited with lots of ideas so themes kind of give me some boundaries to focus on. There are so many different worlds and characters in film and tv so i like when actors bring that into real life with fashion!
I like your videos and how you explain a lot about fashion keep up the good work they are cozy videos that keep my mind away from what’s going on in the real world
Tell me about it, the world is crazy and who else but Tessa to help us forget about it by uploading her videos
I’m obsessed with this trend it’s so fun
honestly I love method dressing. it's so much fun for both the actors and the audience.
It's for the audience, but I have this feeling it isn't always for the actors.
Super interesting!
I really love Zendaya's method dressing
so clearly celebrities and their stylists DO know how to follow a theme... what is the excuse for these last several met galas 😭
Madonna cannot breathe without people criticizing her. Icon.
Barbie's marketing was the only reason I went to the cinema in YEARS. And it was for both Barbie and Oppenheimer! That and Dune. I feel like interesting fashion looks and name recognition are a very big factor here
A good sign that cinema is dead.
5:39 honestly what a cool video idea concept! “Clothing as a promotional tool”. My first thought was the Lady Gaga Polaroid glasses
Wicked is perfect for method dressing. You already saw it with many of the actresses who played the parts in the stage shows. The pink-green combo is just so striking and I cannot wait to see more amazing duo outfits in the weeks to come.
I live for method dressing when it’s done right
Watching this at work in my scrubs lol💅
In my case, in track suit as a sub PE teacher 🤣
This video was soooo satisfying to watch, I never realized that method dressing a promotional thing. It was explained really well 😊
Edward Bernays, the father of propaganda/Public relations, created the advertising for women to smoke to help the women's movement in the 20's.
Also Xóchitl Gomez dresses acording to theme when she attended premieres
the barbie press tour was honestly my favorite part of 2023, and i always love seeing zendaya and jenna on red carpets because they go all out and they always look beautiful while doing it
One of my favorite examples of method dressing is probably the most subtle.
What I'm tired of seeing are all the woman pushed to do this while the men are still giving the "ME just being here is enough vibe" it's glaringly obvious (not that we expect much from men on the carpets PERIOD but, many have tried and are SUCCESSFUL at it, it truly does add to a movies whole aura good or bad when the WHOLE cast shows the same level of dedication) Let the fun and creativity of method dressing sweep all aspects 😂❤I do it and I'm not a celeb like Zendaya & Larson said it makes me feel more confident heading into particular situations I'm not versed in (job interviews, matching the theme of a restaurant on a date etc.) Definitely a "security blanket" that has gotten me through my MOST stressed times🤲🏾the level "whimsy" you have to have while forming the fit lol kinda forces some of the tension out of whatever your walking into🤔best way to explain it
Madonna being the first to really commit makes sense she was (is?) obsessed with Eva Peron. begging to play her, asking for more songs, a more sympathetic angle on Eva (a highly controversial move) ,asking for Antonio banderas to play Che (the secondary lead) and personally asking to film in The Casa Rosada where the Argentine president works (like the White House except they don’t live there)
One of my favourite method dressing example was Lily James’s promo tour for Cinderella in 2015. She looked like a real princess on the red carpet.
Loveeee method dressing!! It’s so fun and gets me more excited for a film
I loved the Beetlejuice clothes at premieres. Like the green dress that references to the statue
I loved this video and all the examples! And I really appreciate the addition of Alia Bhatt's Indian example - her saris for Gangubai were fantastic 🤍
🌹🥀🌷🌹somewhat like this
Or do a seasons changing, start with summer transition to fall, winter, spring and back to summer. Idk just spitballing.
May it long continue! It's a great marketing ploy and I enjoy looking at the outfits and appreciating the different and creative ways a film's theme is expressed.
I’m so excited to see your review of the wicked press tour outfits! I would love for you to talk about them once the tour starts!!💚🩷💚🩷
Agreed
I think it's a good idea for getting people hyped for the public nature of mass entertainment.
i LOVE method dressing! I do it myself whenever I go to a theatre or musical show and it’s sooo fun😍
I love this trend. Makes press tours more interesting just to see why they’ll wear next and how their outfits will be on theme for the movie
18:10 "Her outfits often went in a Tennessee direction."
Tennis theme*
❤ I love these videos. I've only seen a handful of these looks so it's amazing to see so many. The creativity is awesome.
Personally I think the red carpet is definitely the place for costume. Doubly so if it's referencing the film that's up for awards
FINALLY ANOTHER VIDEO!!! Love your content 🫶🏼
Blake Lively’s method dressing would have been less tonedeaf if she’d done a little less and actually been sincere and honest during interviews instead of trite and flippant…. Not a bad idea to honor her character with flowers but a terrible execution.
Excellent research job!
At 0:45 who is that actress, what’s the event, and the dress designer? I want to find that dress! It’s soo pretty!
That’s Anya Taylor Joy in vintage Bob Mackie. It’s definitely not cheap.
I like that method dressing means less plain gowns on red carpets. Like, what's the point of dressing up if you're not gonna go all out?
Great video! ❤ We need more Zendaya and Timothy Chalomet. They’re adorable in their leather outfits
The method dressing phenomenon has made it's way in India too. And ngl they're doing quite good!
u cant outdo the doer ! zendaya is the one people always look to in any type of public event. i for one am always excited to see what her and law pull out. shes one of the only celebrities whos looks i look forward to !
Margot, Zendaya and Elle have all inspired my outfits of late. I'm making all my clothes now, and proud of it
Still waiting for Rooney Mara’s clothes promoting The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo!
She was my first thought when I saw this video!
I'm really into Ariana and Cyntia's Wicked inspired outfits. I can't wait for the actual press tour to begin.
