I am rewatching the Tudor’s right now! I just finished my rewatch of The White Queen which is my all time favorite, I suppose reign is up next when I’m finished with the tudors
My sister got into this show knowing Francis dies coz of her being into historical stories at the time. She liked the characters but kept complaining about the Coachella fashion lol.
I really don't think downton abbey can be describded as "erotic historic". I don't even think it has a an actual sex scene in its entire course. I'm pretty sure the entire 1st season has 2 kiss scenes in total
this the first show that made me realise historical shows could be fun idk lmaoo i would have never watched something like GOT or bridgerton if reign wasnt my gateway 🤣🤣 the way it ended hurt me too bad.
I've been defending the costumes in reign for years now! I just think that as a teenager I loved the dresses. And the storyline was so inaccurate that for me it only added to the experience. Especially in the first season where they don't even pretend to be historical. Mary's huge coronation dress is just perfect for the scene I'll die in that hill. It also matches the styles and social standing of the girls. It fits the narrative. Reign is like the spiritual low budget predecessor to the great. (Also she was 15 in the show?? I had no idea)
I have a lot of cosplaying friends who will often make digs at Reign’s lack of costume accuracy, which I understand why, but then at the same time we’ll all gush about fantasy webtoons and anime with elaborate dresses and plots. I personally think two things can be true at the same time, and in this case, it was still a formative series that got many of us into historical dramas and it had some interesting plots while also acknowledging where its plot and costumes can still have their criticisms. I remember being into this series at a time when I was still just shy of being able to watch The Borgias and other mature series, so it fulfilled that for the while.
I can kinda see their reasoning tho cuz those anime’s and webtoons r meant to fantastical while Reign was supposed to be derived frm actual history so some of the outfits can be jarring in setting. Tht being said tho I did love this series n it did start my love for historical dramas
It's not just that they don't look properly historically, but how specifically modern the look. The gowns don't inspire me to even think of beautiful fantasies, the just look like amped up Halloween costumes
I haven’t watched the show, but from what you say, it sounds like they combined the real-life Claude of France with her youngest sister, Marguerite, who is a much more controversial and scandalous figure (whether deserved or not)
Please make a video about the show The Tudors (2007-2010)! It’s a bit like Reign because it prioritizes making an interesting story over historical accuracy but it’s much more well done!
at least The Tudors attempted to remain accurate to the story. although it wasn't completely well done, but at least there was an attempt🤷♀and unlike Reign, they didn't normalize or justify super red flags in life and treated them as they deserve
@@altinaykor364 I really like the scene where Henry is visited by his wives' ghosts at the end, the ones who he had children with, boy was he haunted. It's such a strong scene and you would think that on his deathbed he was getting some kind of realisation like that. They even showed his son as a ghost even though he was alive at the time, foreshadowing his early death and him having his worst fears realised.
One of my biggest pet peeves with this show beyond some ridiculous storylines was definitely the fashion. It was so different from shows like the Tudors or even The Borgias for example and I'm no expert but the clothes always gave me the feeling of being something from 2013 rather than trying to recreate something historical, if that makes sense.
Interesting that you mention that the "bad" guys got more historical clothes. My interpretation had always been that the older/more mature the character was supposed to be the more they more historical aka conservative styles, which also kinda explained Mary's style change for me as she grew into her role as queen. Btw since you mentioned The Empress? Have you ever made a video about the Sisi craze and how different each drama dresses her? There were two series about a young Sisi in recent years (The Empress and Sisi (2021) aka Sisi: Austrian Empress) as well as two movies about an older Sisi with Corsage and Sisi & I. All have a very fictional take of her in my opinion and vastly different approaches to costuming.
This has to be fate because I just finished rewatching this and I remember every last detail I wasn't lost at all. This show will always be one of my favorites. BTW I'd love to see you make a video on Bridgerton
I loved it in the first two seasons. I suppose I grew out of it. The modern references and costumes became too distracting. It’s possible to at least try to make it a bit more accurate but still interesting like in Wolf Hall or The Virgin Queen. The ending was so rushed too.
I have never seen 'Reign', but a couple of times I've intrigued by it. However, I never approximated to it because it seemed like another messy, chaotic CW show, but in costumes. Imagine my relief after hearing the first segment of the video. I don't think I could've ever imagined a show mixing supernatural mysteries, sexy teen drama, political intrigue and as many corsets as possible. Girl, it definitely was the fever dream I thought it was. I mean, it just lacked a crossover with Cheryl Blossom sending Blair Waldorf back in time just to discover who is A.
I don’t actually mind inaccurate fashion but while something like Bridgeton isn’t accurate, it at least keeps with the silhouette of the time period 😭 like give me something to work with, the outfits in this show don’t even look consistent within their own universe
Greer and Kenna are Scottish names, I don’t know how old they are though. Lola is Spanish and short for Dolores, sounds dumb anyway. Aylee was supposed to be some variation of Aileen I guess?
I know is fantasy show but the costume looked cheap and something you can see in Shein, the tudors with all mistakes the costume were beautiful, delicious
Tudor historian here, who saw showtimes The Tudors when it first aired as a teenager and clearly, it had a massive influence on my life and pursuit within academia. That said,I think it’s far fetched to lump the Tudors in the same category as Reign! They couldn’t be more different…built for diff audiences, entirely diff costumes, diff time period, massive budget and acting talent difference. I get so irked when my fellow historians rip on TT as listen, it’s a tv series that needs a narrative that’s easy to follow for the layman, yet stimulating for the informed, and I feel in retrospect this series has not gotten the praise it deserves. Creator Michael Hirst was no dummy. He had to know the rules in order to break them and he did precisely that! There are a lot of (intentional) campy moments, yes,but there’s also some hyper focused historically accurate moments that are worth celebrating over its 4 seasons. A series like Reign didn’t even try, and that’s ok as it’s built for an entirely diff crowd… I see in some of the comments it also served as a gateway drug into the real history for some of you, as TT did for me many years ago and that’s fabulous! That’s the point of historical fiction. So I don’t clown either series, but they certainly aren’t at the same level either!
You're made of stronger stuff than me, I tried three times to get through Reign - The first when it originally aired, and twice in subsequent years with adjusted expectations - and I rage quit every one of them before the midway point of season one. I liked The Tudors, but I felt like they did a better job of meshing the real (and already very dramatic) story with TV plot invention. I never understood why Reign bothered to even pretend to be based on anything remotely historical; they seemingly had no interest in any of it. I always said they shoild have taken their Gossip Girl at the Ren Faire aesthetic, and fully invented a country and set of characters. I think I maybe could have stomached something like that better than the "History Fanfiction" they did instead.
OMG i totally forgot about this show! i was going to watch it YEARS AGO but the love hexagons weren’t my thing 😭 (also bash lowkey reminds me of bran from got with the whole sacrifing an interesting character in favor of magic and shit 💀)
I have never been happier to see the notification for this!!! I spent the entire watchthrough fussing about clothing inaccuracies and now I get to hear it properly done. 🥰
WE REALLY WERE THO! I binged the first season, looked up when the second would come out, and I’m still pissed, especially since everyone else loved the show as well 😭
I watched this show with my dad in my late teens and I HATED it. The costumes made me angry and the way they kept removing and adding characters got me so confused I didn't understand anything of the plot
You hit the nail on the head with the ending. I was never into the show; but, if (cishet) men can have anachronistic power fantasy dramas, why can't the girls and the gays? Also, it's funny to me, as a lesbian, that both Adelaide Keane and Caitlin Stasey eventually both came out as bi and pan respectively. And they both got their first big break on the Aussie soap Neighbours.

What made me annoyed was Mary Queen of Scots’ story is fascinating on its own and makes a good teen drama. While her captivity was long, her early life is FULL of intrigue. Its embellishment for the sake of making it the 16th century gossip girl was unnecessary; specifically her ladies in waiting - who were interesting IRL - and random brother Bash the magician. The Tudors had similar problems where Henry had two awesome sisters, but they merged them into one character. So many missed opportunities. Far prefer if they did a sexier version of Wolf Hall, where Anne Boleyn was so accurately played (by Claire Foy).
Regarding the costumes inaccuracies, at least it's very purposeful and artistic decision, not just a result of laziness. So it does have that going for it
At least you could tell the characters apart! I tried getting into Versailles around the same time and couldn't keep track of who was who lol, they all looked historically generic.
I don't know they still felt lazy to me, there was no overarching style just "prom". When designing you need to create rules about what people wear. In real life we get a lot of variety but in movies and television too much variety is distracting.
I love Reign fully aware of all the nonsense and creative liberties. Nostalgia does crazy things and it became an ultimate comfort show for me - turns out that it doesn’t even have to be good to be enjoyed
Shows like this or Bridgerton are fun and very enjoyable despite being inaccurate, maybe because they are inaccurate, because most if us are not familiar with these times in history. They are also a great way to make history interesting and prompt all ages to read historical books and learn, which is always a good thing.
Omg, The Tudors! That was the show that really got me into historical/period dramas. even though the accuracy was questionable, it made me curious and interested in learning more and exploring other period dramas. i always find it so interesting to see how closely they can get to accuracy or how much liberty they take, specifically in costuming and storytelling. I do want to give Reign a try though, mainly because I absolutely adore Megan Follows.
Reign was MY SHOW in my last two years of high school, but I completely dropped off after season 2. I think I remember vaguely hearing about constant character deaths in later seasons, and once I knew they were introducing Elizabeth, my knowledge of real world history got too much in the way and I didn’t want to watch all my friends get killed off. In my heart, reign ended after s2, and honestly this recap only reinforces that! They killed Lola!???? Lola was always my favourite, I started watching the show for Anna Popplewell because I loved her in Narnia. From the costume perspective I agree 100% with everything you said, and also that it was SUCH a time capsule of 2013/14 fashion. Honestly like, reign was probably what got me interested properly for the first time in costume design, and I’ve gone on to study it and had t actually connected that reign was one of the first shows I got suuuper into the costuming of. I think historical accuracy has a place in storytelling, but it doesn’t have to be accurate in order to be inspiring! And inspiring and fun and melodramatic was the point, it was a show for teenagers and I love that it just. Was a show for teenagers. I’ll always have a soft spot for it, but I’m not watching s3 or 4 hahah
The only thing that annoyed me was the rushed ending. I know why, Queen Mary did some rather bad things before being under arrest for 19 years, and plotting to kill her cousin in hopes the catholics put her on the English Throne. She did this because she was power hungry by that point. Elizabeth I was harassed for weeks about signing Mary's death warrent after the plot was discovered and thwarted. Elizabeth was tricked into signing Mary's death warrent under the gize it was to imprison Mary indefinitely. When Mary was executed, she was not remorseful, she was still defiant and unbroken. Literally went to the execution in a red dress to resemble the cardinals of the catholic church. Elizabeth was destort over the execution, mainly because it caused her to remember what happened to her mother, Anne Bolyne. Of course, Reign would not be accurate because that ment doing a hero to villian storyline. They always tried to paint Mary as a victim and good person when actually, she was very flawed and made very impulsive choices which ultimately led to her death.
i have never seen this show but i did watch the first season of the serpent queen which overlaps with this story and i’m curious to know if you’d watch it and review the fashion coz i think it’s really good at least in the fashion department and it’s entertaining but idk it’s it’s 100% accurate (i think maybe like marie antoinette where it’s pretty accurate but they also took some creative liberties or just convey certain things poorly maybe?)
idk if it's too similar but I'd love to see a video about The Empress (Die Kaiserin)! I'm watching it now and it's really well done, but it is funny how I'm thrown out of the immersion violently when someone shows up with a bob, or the 70s/80s inspired party looks pop up. (also for anyone who hasn't seen the Fast & Furious franchise, it is genuinely turn-your-brain-off fun, it's so ridiculous and unrealistic but it's self-aware of that & also a ridiculously great time, I find myself grinning ear to ear multiple times throughout. I am a girl who failed to learn to drive stick from my own dad & I drive super safe but those movies are 10/10 EXHILARATING)
Ok technically not a revisit because the show is fairly new, but I’d LOVE to hear you do a breakdown of the Decameron on Netflix. I absolutely loved the show and would love to hear more about the costuming from your perspective
same. in the first season, i thought bash and mary were better suited than her and frances. but then when his storyline waned, frances started growing on me, unfortunately. and then they ruined bash with that supernatrual plotline that didn't suit him at all and made no sense for his character.
I adore Outlander(books too) Downton Abbey and the Gilded age But Bridgerton and Reign bad costumes personally take me out of the immersion. I did like the Tudors where I can see past it.
@@MsJayteeListens it can always improve but to me Outlander is more of a fantasy. Its mostly fictional characters. But I do wish being as accurate as possible was more populair espealially with real historical people .
What gets me the most about historical fiction is that it dosent take a lot of money to make costumes that are at last reasonable on screen; if reenactors can do a thriftstore haul and get a decent camp set up than a primetime show can.
I was one of the few people whom really enjoyed the show. I enjoy the fast paced pilot. And the season run times are really good. The sets are gorgeous and so are the dresses, they sacrificed the historical accuracy with costuming but I believe the show gives you more of that with storyline as you can tell a story through a simple garment. In the pilot all of the girls are wearing flowy dresses I think with flower crowns or something it shows how clueless and young they are coming to French court. I believe costuming is also ment to symbolize how the life styles at court were very scandalous.😊 Lol I love reign but I haven't watched in a while first comment of the video.
inaccuracy in costumes of this show is the least of its problems, trust me! this show is literally merge of every single red flag in life crammed into one story and be treated as normal and acceptable🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀
I always considered Downton Abbey one of the sexless series I've ever seen. There isn't much erotic subtext like other period dramas, is all very descret.
I really enjoyed reign, and loved it as “historical fan-fiction.” The storylines also did keep me invested, as I felt that they balanced the overly dramatic relationship squabbles with legitimately hard political and historical intrigue. The costumes were silly at times, but that honestly was part of the charm. Catherine and Mary are delightful characters, played wonderfully, and when they teamed up??? The best part of the series.
FUN FACT: Reign is fantasy fiction with a light historical basis, which is why more than half of the characters are completely fictional. The very talented costume designers (and writers) were told to make a bold story filled with fantastical stories. I think the show did a great job at designing costumes that fitted each character: -Greer is the only lady who wasn't born with a title. She simply has a lot of money and her parents "bought" her position. As the "new money" in the show, she dresses to impress and is very flashy in her jewels, wearing too much gold, too much furs, too much expensive fabrics, as if to prove something. -Kenna is the "bohemian" of the group and her fashion reflects her open mind and peaceful, loving nature. She wears a lot of whites and beiges, loose fabrics and see-through sleeves that reveal her open sexuality. -Lola is the most down-to-earth and romantic of the girls, and so she wears a lot of deep reds and dusty rose colours. Her dresses are beautiful, but simple and reminiscent of the new romantic movement. -Aylee is the youngest of the ladies, and the most withdrawn (at first). A lot of her gowns are white to establish her innocence, and to make it easier for her to fade into the background. Her dresses are also a lot more conservative than the other ladies, with longer sleeves and higher necklines, which is fitting as she is the only one without a romantic storyline. I also think that the costumes showed great distinction between the French, English, Spanish and Scottish courts. It made the world building a lot more believable when everything was filmed on the same lot.
Changing the four Marys was bad enough, but Lola, Greer, Kenna, and Ayley, wtf?!! They could have at least spelt it Eilidh which is actually a Scottish name. Wait, Mary returns to Scotland before Francis’ death, again wtf?! I can’t correct all the historical inaccuracies I have neither the time nor patience
Oh my goodness, I thought Lola, Greer and Kenna were the actresses ' names😂 If they were going to use the song Marie Hamilton at least they could have called the girls Mary Beaton, Mary Seton, Mary Fleming and Mary Hamilton. Still inaccurate but at least based in our culture.
girl can you do 'muhteşem yüzyıl' (the magnificent century) their outfits were too good to be historically accurate yet I heard they got inspiration from a European court.
I don't think I've ever heard anything so hilariously inaccurate as someone calling downton abbey and the gilded age "bodice ripping". they're just period dramas lmao, reign didn't invent the genre. Downton Abbey is also famously incredibly accurate with most historical details in their show especially the costuming
Letting Mary die might have actually been the kinder thing to do. She was probably suffering and slightly mad at that point, and keeping her imprisoned for another twenty years would be another form of cruelty.
As a tall redhead myself, I remember feeling personally slighted when casting for this show was announced. But in my own professional acting experience I would learn that there is a very real aversion to using women who might be as tall or taller than their male castmates, especially if the character is young and/or meant to be the subject of romantic attention. Despite the world being filled with girls of above average height, a lot of directors don't think they read as believably feminine on stage/screen. It's tall lady erasure is what it is.
Omg I was wondering why Lola looked so familiar, until I realized I saw her in Alex Meyers video about Narnia! That’s crazy that I’ve seen her twice in one day 😂😂
Started rewatching this series lately! Insanely inaccurate but the characters were so entertaining and I remember watching each episode as I was younger. It helped that all the actors and actresses were gorgeous and Mary and Francis's love story ended up so sweet.
BABE putting Downton Abbey into the “erotic historic” category is a WILD take 🤣🤣
Agree. It's more romantic then erotic, and even that not so much in comparison
yeah that gave prude tbh
Nothing erotic about Downton. I love the show, but it's proper miserable.

My sister got into this show knowing Francis dies coz of her being into historical stories at the time. She liked the characters but kept complaining about the Coachella fashion lol.
I really don't think downton abbey can be describded as "erotic historic". I don't even think it has a an actual sex scene in its entire course. I'm pretty sure the entire 1st season has 2 kiss scenes in total
merlin, for sure, i feel like it flies so much under the radar but its a very fun show

Definitely need a video for "The Other Boleyn Girl"!
Which one? There's two and they're both equally bad in different ways.
@krn2683 The 2008 film. Personally, it's my favorite historical fiction film.

I’ve never heard of this
But please tell all about it and its costuming

I was OBSESSED with the first 2 seasons of this show back when it was airing. I always wondered if you were going to cover it one day. Great video!
The costuming is also inconsistent.
Reign walked so Bridgerton could run.
Ooooh where did you watch it? It’s gone from Netflix! 😢
I loved it in the first two seasons. I suppose I grew out of it. The modern references and costumes became too distracting. It’s possible to at least try to make it a bit more accurate but still interesting like in Wolf Hall or The Virgin Queen. The ending was so rushed too.
Man I remember seeing this and thinking that the costumes looked like the prom clearance section In Dillards 😅
Like you could wear some of them at a big party , like a weding and it would be almost normal
OMG A REIGN VIDEO ESSAY IN 2024!!
I'm ngl I'm genuinely so glad I found this channel, spitting nothing but facts
"Mary, Greer, Kenna, Lola and Aylee".
Oh, yes, all the good olde traditional European names.
Greer and Kenna are my great great great grandparent's surnames they tried
I’ve never watched reign, but I’ve seen gifs and I fully thought it was a modern rich people drama like gossip girl or pretty little liars
I mean, it was! It was just historical flavoured instead of suburban American flavoured 😅
A combination of 2010s Halloween costuming and literally every actor having Instagram Face.

WE REALLY WERE THO! I binged the first season, looked up when the second would come out, and I’m still pissed, especially since everyone else loved the show as well 😭
yessss
I wanted a second season sooo bad it definitely gave Reign Vibes.
I watched this show with my dad in my late teens and I HATED it. The costumes made me angry and the way they kept removing and adding characters got me so confused I didn't understand anything of the plot
I tried to watch it multiple times. But the costumes (and hair styles) just took me out. It just took me right out of the story.
In real life we get a lot of variety but in movies and television too much variety is distracting.
huh, I had no idea they ended up moving the focus outside of the French court and killing Francis in s2. bold shit.
01:59 thought it was a stanly cup.
I think of that don carlos plot like once a year because why was that shit so funny 😂
lmao same. it lives rent-free in my brain.
Lola was the most hated character!?! When Kenna is right there😐
I always come back to watching this show and now its a companion piece when I watch Serpent Queen.
People disliked Lola?? Lol I always loved her. She had it so rough, poor thing
"Bash simply didn't exist, not that I cared" realest of real.
Fr I love Bash and whenever the actor is in another show I'm like Leo in the Meme I'm like Bash!!!😂😂😂
i have never seen this show but i did watch the first season of the serpent queen which overlaps with this story and i’m curious to know if you’d watch it and review the fashion coz i think it’s really good at least in the fashion department and it’s entertaining but idk it’s it’s 100% accurate (i think maybe like marie antoinette where it’s pretty accurate but they also took some creative liberties or just convey certain things poorly maybe?)
The gilded age…. A BODICE RIPPER?? U kidding me?
idk if it's too similar but I'd love to see a video about The Empress (Die Kaiserin)!

@@EstherHulst-Artist The bad history in Outlander doesn’t bother you?
@@MsJayteeListens it can always improve but to me Outlander is more of a fantasy. Its mostly fictional characters.

@@EstherHulst-Artist Jamie may not be real but Clan Fraser is, as are many of the characters misused in Outlander
I always loved it, when you speak about films and TV. No exception, here. Great job!
What gets me the most about historical fiction is that it dosent take a lot of money to make costumes that are at last reasonable on screen; if reenactors can do a thriftstore haul and get a decent camp set up than a primetime show can.
Could you talk about the fashion in Outlander especially season two?
"historically accurate? no. Sexy? Yes" - sums everything up tbh
Downton Abbey was an "erotic" show? That's news to me. What a strange thing to say.
I think the show did a great job at designing costumes that fitted each character:
-Greer is the only lady who wasn't born with a title.
Oh my goodness, I thought Lola, Greer and Kenna were the actresses ' names😂
If they were going to use the song Marie Hamilton at least they could have called the girls Mary Beaton, Mary Seton, Mary Fleming and Mary Hamilton. Still inaccurate but at least based in our culture.
What I find hilarious is that all four of Mary's ladies in waiting were ALSO named Mary!
girl can you do 'muhteşem yüzyıl' (the magnificent century) their outfits were too good to be historically accurate yet I heard they got inspiration from a European court.
yes please i second this SO MUCH
No they were inspired from modern day kaftans that are used usually in weddings. And if you think they are too good to be real you know nothing.
Fun fact: the actor who played Bash also played a character in The Tudors!
Yep! Thomas culpepper in season 4 of the tudors - which was depicted for the most part pretty accurately
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE
I loved this show, and loved the costumes!
The tv show Merlin had a decent costumes first season, but later King Arthur spends all day, every day in chain mail or full armor.
Letting Mary die might have actually been the kinder thing to do. She was probably suffering and slightly mad at that point, and keeping her imprisoned for another twenty years would be another form of cruelty.
I like Kenna in the one episode when she befriended Pascal but then they immediately killed him off an episode later
Mary queen of scots was like famously ginger and almost 6 foot tall... why wouldnt they cast an actress that even remotely resembles real life mary
@@homurastan2927 She was also Scottish and has never been played on screen by a Scottish actress
