thanks so much to michelle from clever & chic for wanting to collaborate with me on this video! make sure to watch her devil wears prada video over on her channel ruclips.net/video/i5zWnQ3gOk8/видео.html 💞
Thank you for having me! I'm with you on coveting a new fashion movie set in a new decade, it would be so interesting to see now that fashion has evolved and trends have cycled so much from the time of The Devil Wears Prada
I disagree. Andy earned her place to go to Paris. She even managed to get the impossible copy of the unpublished book through the connections she made and impressed Miranda. While Emily kept being the snotty stuck up Miranda-fan girl. Sorry, if you watch the movie again, Emily's only efforts are in starving herself to look good while Andy got to use networking and learning fast to anticipate Miranda's next move (that's how she earned to be called "Andrea" and deliver the book). I hope you will never need to work with someone slightly senior who thinks they automatically deserve promotion just because they keep on doing same thing for years as opposed to someone with brand new ideas and looking for solutions for seemingly impossible situations.
I love that the movie takes some moments to show that Emily is actually a nice person. *When she's running errands for Miranda, right before she gets hit by a cab, she apologizes to a stranger for accidentaly running into them. *At the hospital, even though she's so mad, she is polite to the nurse and smiles sweetly at them. She's not shallow or mean, she just takes her job seriously, unlike Andy.
Yeah, I mean it would be even nicer for her to be more polite to Andy (who’s super annoying in her eyes), but she’s not a saint and her attitude towards Andy alone doesn’t make her a mean person in general. As someone who almost never gets mad in personal life, but absolutely HATES anyone who I perceive to be getting in my way at work, I can honestly relate to Emily more than I’d like to admit.
Ooh I have a hair theory about Andy's initial hair that looked like extremely poorly blended extensions (presumably that is what they did), with the really sad dry lengths, the medium lengths and non-committal bangs pushed to the sides. I think Andy tried to get bangs a couple of years back, changed her mind about them and let them grow out but did not cut the other lengths to match. And then very recently she decided to get bangs again and was unsure, hence the way she parts them. I think she actually does care about how she looks to some degree pre-Runway; otherwise, why would she keep trying to get bangs?
Oh in the DVD commentary portion, they talked about Miranda’s white wig, that it was very controversial with Fox (they thought it would make her look old), Patricia stated that the white hair is very high fashion and indicative of the white powdered wigs worn by the French aristocracy in the Borboun Court during the 18th Century, and also it’s a slight nod to Karl Lagerfeld and his white pony tail (during the 80’s he was deeply inspired by the 18th century and decided to make that his signature look) in addition to what was mentioned in the video (Liz at Harper’s Bazaar)
I always took that as Andy being a little "not like other girls" in her mentality, like she assumed it would be easy there because they're all materialistic fashion girls so she didn't need to bother?
There are deleted scenes. She was supposed to be interviewing for a position at an auto mag and was re routed by the headhunter at the last minute. That’s why she was not prepared.
It fits because she’s inexperienced and not serious about herself, just wanted to get a job. It’s nice that at the start she struggles and fails, which lacks in today’s modern perfect-strong-woman in movies that bores me to death
Watching this movie as a fashion student, you feel for Emily the most. Imagine being the whole embodiment of a fashion lover while trying to deprive yourself from eating just so you can fit into that embodiment only for a car to hit you. Man I cried a bit.
Yes! I thought the greatest tragedy of the movie is Emily. I really sympathized with her doing everything correctly and giving the job 1000% but being treated worse than garbage by Miranda and finally demoted and cut from the Paris trip. I really felt sad for her still stuck in that job at the end where she will never be good enough.
Well, it's kind of the point of Andy's turnaround at the end, too, isn't it? That she realised Emily's tragedy and realised she did not want to keep contributing to it.
It is sad, but hey she got to stay, there were other Paris trips! 😊 The injury from the car accident though, I hope she didn't suffer any permanent deformity or chronic pain. I hope she didn't need any major surgeries. I feel bad for her in that hospital. Sucks to lose a trip to Paris, but definitely sucks harder to be lying in a hospital with your body being broken and bruised. It's funny, I think our different backgrounds make us both feel really bad for her, but what we feel bad for the most is not the same. 😅
The fact her CHEF BOYFRIEND doesn’t understand her having a busy schedule or having to sacrifice for work was wild to me. And then at the end where he expects her to go to Boston with him for his promotion- I’m happy shes shown getting a job at a NY newspaper at the end, so they prob went their separate ways
I think the friends are pretty poorly thought through characters in the film. The whole relationship dynamic doesn't make sense and they just gloss over it. Andrea's chef boyfriend would be the first to understand the pressures of long hours and people that are hard to work with. It's the only bit of the film that winds me up because it's so illogical that he wouldn't be supportive.
@@OfficialROZWBRAZEL I suppose you could look at it from that point of view. I personally think they just lifted the characters from the original book and dropped their backstory from the plot. The book version makes more sense as to why they're fed up with her. In the film they just end up as baddies to add a bit of tension and help us sympathise with Andrea.
If it helps, Nates closer to on the outs than you think. As this video pointed out, the last outfit we see Andi in is a big indicator. It's not designer, but it's not her old clothes either. It's something that's actually flattering on her, because THAT'S the real lesson she learned from working there: how to dress for personal success.
I do like how the devil wears prada's makeover for Andy wasn't a "You're ugly so we need to change it" but it actually had to do with her advancing, maturing showing she actually is willing to improve and reflect what her career and job stands for.
Exactly this. I love that she didn't need to dye her hair or get surgery or anything ridiculous. The idea of Andy embracing her feminine style was done in a mature and self-respecting way. I love this movie.
her makeover was kind of "youre ugly so we need to change it" though. nigel kept telling her her outfits were essentially ugly and ill fitting and that she needed to change everything. even her hair becomes sleeker as time goes on
@@just-trying-my-best-everyday I think the idea is more your clothes are ugly and you have no style over your body and structure is ugly and need to be changed. I feel like Andy's style was elevated because she kept the classic feminine and academia style but with better styling.
Emily is such a strong character! She stood to her goals but recognized people’s value, if not, why would she said: “you have some very large shoes to fill”
I've always LOVED Emily. When I got older and realized she is British that added another layer to her character. She probably left all her family, friends and her whole life in England to go work for Miranda
Same! I loved Emily!! I always thought her jibes at Andy were totally justified because of how little Andy cares about the industryat the start and how often she'll scoff at the others for taking it so seriously.
I LOVE Emily, too. The scene in the hospital always kills me. Her licking the pudding cover is PRICELESS. Obviously no longer dieting for Paris. So relate-able.
That's my main qualm with historical costume channels constantly rating movies and shows on how accurate they are. I don't care on how accurate to the times they are. I care about whether or not they help tell the story, and on how pretty they are.
Emily is actually the nicest person in this movie. She thanks the nurse when she was hospitalized and never tries to sabotage Andy. She even helps Andy a lot without asking for a reward.
She never sabotages her because she sees her as less-than... and helping her because Andy can affect her own job isn't "nice" at all. I seriously don't get why people are defending catty yes-man behaviour, disappointing 😩
She isn't nice per se. She is just not ultra mean. She definitely was a bit condescending towards Andy and started to take Andy more seriously when Andy started to, not dress the part, but dress in luxury brands. It reeks shallowness in my opinion.
@@msk-qp6fn Andy didn’t take the job seriously at all in the beginning, like she said herself Andy didn’t give a shit about Runway and to someone like Emily who is literally dreaming of becoming the next miranda, it’s like Andy is belittling her dreams.
Andy: Miranda hired Me. She knows what I look like Nigel: Do you? The ultimate form of shade. 2 words that created self doubt in a heartbeat lol Nigel is savage for that.
@@udontknowme3920 well to be fair she applied for a job that had to do with fashion and she didn't have the passion for it which I thought was a slap in the face to the fashion industry. why be in the industry if you have no interest in it? I don't think I would've given her a hard time but she would've been fired😂
@@udontknowme3920 Emily is only rude to her because of the reasons already pointed out in this video, Nigel isn't rude to her, just brutally honest. Being honest is the only he can help her.
One thing I noticed after studying fashion makeup in London is that Andy’s makeup gets distinctly more classical French when she goes to Paris; top heavy eyeliner + red lips. A perfect Parisian look according to the rule book. Cool little detail.
They give her this wonderful preying mantis vibe. Like she’s one millisecond away from biting your head off and eating it, but she’ll look graceful and elegant while doing it.
As a child I knew I didn’t like Andy’s friends or boyfriend, but didn’t fully understand why. Now I see they made fun of where she was hired, didn’t like how she took her job seriously and were complete assholes about it. There was the one scene where they were throwing her phone around when Miranda was calling and thus almost costing her job. She was rightfully mad about it, but THEY were the ones offended by her actions. In my opinion Andy should’ve stayed in Paris with Miranda. Her life was evolving while they were holding her back.
I agree, 100%. She had a beautiful new life starting there, and I think Andy would have been genuinely happy. I liked her with the second guy. He treated her better than the first one.
If anything they were just surprised. Andy also used to be a person who made fun of people like the ones at her job. They made fun of where she was hired because Andy also made fun of places like the one where she was hired. When she’s telling them that she has to do this or that thing that’s stressing her out, her boyfriend is thinking “just quit” because all of her actions up until that job said that she would not value a job like that. As far as they’re all concerned, she did a complete 180, which she’s entitled to do, but from their point of view she’s blowing them off and sacrificing her life for a job that they didn’t even know she cared about that much. Her work started to come before everything else her life.
@@bluebabybutterfly100 I agree with you 100%. the reason they made fun of the industry, was because she also used to engage in those kinds of discussions. when she became part of the industry, she realised how wrong she was and how much there was to learn. that's the difference. her friends still kept their close-minded views. they took it as a personal threat when she started to take interest in the fashion world, and obviously in her job. instead of rooting for her, they blamed her for no valid reason.
"Andy should’ve stayed in Paris with Miranda. Her life was evolving while they were holding her back." I think you described this very well. After rewatching the film, I thought it was so incredibly silly and naiive of Andy when she 1.) Took a WAY TOO personal interest in Miranda's personal life after one simple exchange that won Andy's sympathy, and yet 2.) Took an unnecessarily self righteous position when Miranda looked out for herself at, unfortunately, Nigel's expense. What was she expecting? I can't believe THAT ultimately ended up being the reason that she broke up with new jerk bf and immediately quit her job/left Miranda's side so abruptly, after going through such great lengths to try to warn her about her impending position. She goes from extreme sympathy, to extreme high horse. Honestly, what is Miranda and Nigel to Andy anyway? She's way too vested in them and treats them as something beyond what they actually are: boss and coworker. She cares too much.
Fun fact: i just watched deleted scenes from the movie and found out that andy is so unprepared for the interview because she accidentally scheduled two interviews at the same time and only prepared for the other one. Dont know why they deleted the scene bc now it makes sense
wait whats that scene? i thought in the deleted scene she goes to the HR for the parent media company, and they offer her to go to either Runway or Automag for an interview.
Something I noticed about Andy's boyfriend: he only takes an interest in her style twice in the movie. First when she shows up in those gorgeous Chanel boots and jacket, and he makes a comment "we better get out of here before my girlfriend shows up." So a backhanded compliment. And second when he's angry she kept her job and she makes him feel better by showing him her lingerie. It feels like every line he has is him making fun of her and her clothes.
One thing about this movie that was so important to me as a budding woman: At the beginning of the movie, Andy dresses the way she does in part because of internalized misogyny; she thinks dressing more fashionably makes her vain, shallow and less smart (i.e., too caught up in frivolous "stuff"), maybe even immodest or "slutty." And her friends and boyfriend confirmed her bias by laughing at her beginning to take an interest in fashion. But Andy was smart and showed courage; she was able to open her mind up to her colleagues' perspectives and she realized that femininity is not bad. Dressing feminine or sexy does not make you less of a person. It can be empowering and self-actualizing. One of my favorite movies. Thank you ModernGurlz for the review.
Yes! I definitely agree with you on that, I’ve been told before that I’m very “feminine” and that my fashion sense is “flashy” which can have both negative and positive connotations to it like you stated. From the way people (*boys and especially “I’m not like the other girls” girls), look at you funny when you talk about fashion and makeup to anything remotely seen as “feminine” being laughed at shows that society really is misogynistic. I’m glad like you, I’ve developed into my own being and now that femininity is empowering. Being female is not a weakness, I can be all these great things AND look good when doing it.
I'm often told that I'm not taken seriously in my job because I still retain feminine aspects of myself. It really is internalized misogyny and it's trash. Imagine thinking someone is stupid because they like to wear dresses like wtf even
Maybe if Andy wanted to emulate masculinity, I could accept this point of view, but she _did_ dress feminine even before the fashion-transformation. She wore skirts, she wore colours and patterns, she didn't intend to _not_ look feminine. She didn't intend to look sexy though, but that's another issue. Blaming it on internal misogyny is a far stretch. Yes, Andy thinks fashion is superficial, but fashion is not uniquely female. Men can be vain, even without being fashionable. (so how about your internal misogyny to associate vanity with femininity?) Her choice to not put time and effort into looking stylish is a consequence of her choice to put her time and effort into other things that mattered to her more at that time. We all have a limited amount of time and energy. And you are basically saying that any woman not putting some of that into dressing has internal misogyny! which it outrageous! Andy got into a situation when she needed to develop an interest in fashion, and she got something out of it, which is great for her. She could have gone to culinary magazine and learned to appreciate wine - or a yoga magazine and learned how to be present in her body. It'd be the same story. Is style more important than enjoying your food? or mindfulness? is it? Does everyone have to do everything? (no. the answer is: no.)
@@csillakaszas7285 she literally spoke down about those women who did have the interest like she was so much better than them for *not* caring though, which IS internalized misogyny. It's part of that "not like other girls" bullshit where she felt superior to them for not having an interest in this vacuous and feminine thing.
Honorable styling mentions!: Emily's sharp eye makeup! It helps catch her judging eye and fierce demeanor Miranda's earrings and sunglasses are iconic. They show expensiveness, and of course, the sunglasses also show her dismissiveness And finally Andy's hair! It transforms with her style and helps build her silhouette, going from a bit messy to more put together (those bangs 👀)
Emily's makeup was seeeexy. I hope the makeup dept got some sort of award for that. It wasn't overdone but still made a statement about her character, not easy to do onscreen!
I think thw current reality of fashion plays importan part as well. 80s, 90s & 2006-2013s fashion were fantastic. Until 2015 and forward, the fashion industry is getting crappier with horrid trends & influencers creeping in. I truly & honestly believe the Age of Kardashians had influenced fashion in a bad way.
he's a man child. Missing his birthday was a little bit shitty but the rest of it? He should have been much much more supportive of her. That was a real opportunity and those are hard to come by in her field. He could have put his big girl panties on for awhile.
God, same. As a college kid I didn't quite know what to make of him, but as an adult woman who is very career driven, I find him so unsupportive! I'm glad the actor thinks so too, haha.
My mom told me she really liked The Devil Wears Prada so I was very excited to watch it for the first time. I loved the different outfits and fashion. However, what made me rather irritated was how nobody seemed to support Andy when she started really liking her job. She was proud of getting better! Her style got so fabulous and she seemed more confident to experiment with her style. She gave her friends glamours gifts for them to steal her phone and make fun of how she got angry? And her bf was always talking about how she "changed" and how she's acting better than everyone else? Red flag right there. I fell in love with Emily though. Working hard, passionate about fashion and won't stop for nobody to fulfill her dream! She deserves to go to Paris in her gorgeous dress! Petition for a sequel about Emily pls
That boyfriend: 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 If i remember correctly he was also toxic af about the fact that she made more money than him (i watched it like 10 years ago i could be extremely wrong)
The movie is supposed to be a critique, Andy quit because she has become someone she’s not. Maybe the boyfriend could’ve been better executed. This reminds me of a movie called whiplash, which was meant to be a critique, but the fans of the movie always seem to miss the point
Well, generally, no one owes her anything. Andy is an inexperience, self-centred and 'I am not like other girls' kid, and her coming of age, finally, is good, but seriously belated. So no, she does not require standing ovation for becoming a reasonably responsible adult.
One thing I want to mention is that Andy's final dress looks so much alike silhouettes wise to the dress that we first see Emily in, probably hinting that's she is not only becoming like Mirada, but also like emily
Right?! Even my friends who aren’t into fashion support my interests because that’s what good friends are supposed to do. And when I get a boyfriend, I’m gonna find someone who appreciates my passion for fashion or at least someone who doesn’t make snarky remarks about it.
When the book/film came out I said Andys friends and boyfriend were trash and her quitting at the end was ridiculous. Everyone thought I was nuts I'm glad more people are coming round to my opinion
@Izzy Izzy I don't think they were belittling her job, I think they were concerned that her job was taking over her life and causing her to get run down with the long hours.
@@ditak1913 um ok ? So if you ever have a significant other maybe you will relate. Until then I hope everyone forgets your bday and calls you immature for throwing a fit.
@@livingdead9318 except she DID NOT forget his birthday, she tried to make up for it with the cupcake when she gets back to their apartment. No. The point the other person was making that Andy was pouring her guts out for the job (which, by the way, her gateway to whatever she aims for in the future at another publication) and the boyfriend had the audacity to make HIM the centre of HER life (and not HER OWN) and guilt trip her for not orbiting him all the time? Yeah, no thanks. Even when I have a significant other, I would value MY life and theirs equally, not like the boyfriend whose main concern is having a "subservient" girlfriend he can have absolute control over and whines when she couldn't bend to his whims.
@@mannykim7547 I would honestly be really upset that the one day out of the year that was supposed to be mine my SO decided work was more important than me. Frfr that's messed up. And none of Andy's friends ever switched up on her. She picked those friends from jump. She was JUST like them. She was pretentious and ignorant of fashion and was the one with the biggest disdain towards it. So when she suddenly turns into a fashion icon more obsessed with her job than to actually come to a birthday party she was supposed to go to, I could see why someone would be mad at her. We give Andy all the leeway but she was in the wrong the ENTIRE movie. She gave more of her time an energy to an industry she once despised and stepped all over Emily and basically took the girls job (Miranda even mentions that part). Her friends teased her about it, but they all tease each other. That is literally their friendship dynamic. Look at how they all interact with each other. She switched up and not for the better. She isn't a bad person but she was a bad friend and gf. I haven't seen the movie in years but i don't remember a scene where Andy confidently tells her friends how she feels about her job, and how she has changed to like it so how would they know that she feels any difference towards it?? Miranda was a mean woman, full stop. She treated Andy like she was 2nd rate and Andy STILL prioritized her over someone she is supposedly in love with.
honestly, the one thing I didn't like apart from andy's friends and bf, was that people were telling her she's fat. It can hurt a lot a little girl who's watching it.
But it's unfortunately very much a reality in the fashion industry. I'm glad that they showed it so people can see how insidious and f*cked up it is. Anna Wintour (the real life inspiration for Miranda Priestly) is famous for fat shaming the people that work in Vogue. It's even in "The September issue" which is a documentary about the magazine, Anna asks her team to photoshop the filmmaker's belly.
I think it was supposed to show how ridiculously unrealistic some standards are - we see Andy, completely beautiful and healthy life - being called fat, which is truly alarming but in this movie,it has purpose
I think the movie pokes fun at that (“Ever since 2 became the new 4 and 0 became the new 2” satirises how body ideals change as often as fashion trends) but it’s a certain type of humour that might be too subtle for younger audiences to understand.
@@amstreater hmmm yes. The movie truely highlights the toxic parts of the fashion industry, which in hindsight might also contribute to Andy's decision of not wanting to be a part of it anymore.
I think the reason they don't repeat outfit pieces in movies is because of continuity in editing. It might create confusion towards the viewers as certain shots are made not showing the full body of the characters. Different clothes signifies difference in days, setting or mood, proving advancement towards the storyline.
"The only thing i would change is Andy realizing her friends are trash" lmaooooooo I feel like we all grew to realise that. Like the first time I watched it I was just i bit miffed by their attitude but everyone always said I had an AttitudeTM so I was like oKaY. Now years later I see that my attitude was not (nor is) that bad, I have respect for myself and who I keep in my inner circle and Andy's friends were, indeed, assholes.
@@stefanmakara373 Also, it's not like they weren't just as passionate about fashion, they recognized the pieces and knew their worth. It would have brought them closer together if they had just accepted that the perks of her job came with the responsability of learning about the industry and taking it seriously. Why couldn't they appreciate that they had something new in common and just be supportive?
Diane Ghazaryan I agree that the bf never really cared but the girl was not fine. She literally mocked Andy’s job and Miranda. This was during the time Andy finally started to admire and respect Miranda, so it was wrong of them to disrespect her. All of her “friends” was ultimately disrespecting Andy after they received her gifts and then mocked her job. It started way before Andy did some trashy individual things.
I felt like they were trying to "keep her in her place." I haven't read the book, and I wondered maybe if in the book her personality changes more. In the movie, their reaction doesn't seem justified, especially the boyfriend's, to what she's become. It's not out of the norm for people out of college to work long hours or change the way they dress to get their career going. And aspiring cooks and art curators are also working hard and schmoozing, so they were pretty harsh on her.
Emily was a bitch. If you ever work with someone slightly superior than an entry level you'll see there are so many Emilies who pretend to be the boss. The friends weren't as bad as you think, they just saw how Andy changed to become part of the world she mocked herself before and it wasn't even ever a thing she wanted to be. The only thing I agree is that Andy's boyfriend is a major child and needs to grow up.
@@julijakeit Hmm except that Emily is way more likable than Andy's "friends." Emily was harsh and prickly, but she was working in a harsh environment with a new girl who didn't respect the job. The only thing she did that I'd say was "bitchy" was laughing about Andy's lack of fashion. I think Emily and Andy could have become great lifelong friends if Andy had stuck around. Personally, Emily was my 2nd favorite character. She's not nice, and that's okay.
@@julijakeit yeah but people grow up and change I said that i wouldn't do stuff i do now or did, bc i taught to be a goody goody princess and that feminine stuff is something so shameful, and i hate society for it
I don't think I've ever hated a character like Andy's boyfriend before, he belittled her, made fun of her job, and was expecting her to drop everything to go with him.
She also kinda cheated on him and he just wants to her to be around . It’s very clear that He needs a partner who spends time with him and he isn’t wrong for that He constantly supported her actual dream and not her running around for her boss But him making fun of her work later on when she started liking fashion was just . no . He only liked her getting into fashion when she showed him a little lingerie :/ For that he is a jerk But wanting a girlfriend who is present isn’t wrong at all
@@user-pw1nd2me9o yeah I got ur point, I'm not talking about wanting her to be present, I just hated the way he looked down upon her current job, I mean even if it wasn't her dream it is still a douchy thing to laugh at someone's job
and there were points where he kind of sexualized her. for example, when she's showing off her outfit at their apartment, he says he hates all the pieces she's wearing. but then when she shows him her lingerie, he clearly was fine with that, because of their makeout session. he was quite petty.
One thing that stood out to me about Miranda, is that her age amplifies her beauty. Everything to her outfits to her makeup, and hairstyle has a very natural look. But in a way that looks effortlessly mature, and stunning. You wouldn’t be able to capture that sense of classy glamour if she wasn’t in her mid to late 40s-50s
Girl same! I’m a costume technician so I work in the same field. This channel brings me so much joy lol. I wish my design classes in college were like this
I've always loved the way you can show character development through costume design. Andy kept her style at the end because she believed in herself. Her final interview was such a contrast between the first she had with Miranda.
13:14 About Emily's future: in the sequel to the Devil Wears Prada book, Emily and Andy become business partners and run together a bridal magazine (they occasionally use the fact that they worked for Miranda to get what they want from people in the publishing industry)
@@bennyton2560 to be honest, I don't remember the reason very well because I've red the book many years ago, but, as far as I remember, when Andy and her meet again for the first time after many years without seeing each other, she had already left Runaway and was working somewhere else
I noticed that she really cares about showing how skinny she is. Like for example when Andy told her that she looked skinny she was so happy and started to tell so proudly how hard she was starving to loose weight.
I think another thing that's heartbreaking for Emily's character is that she does begin to open up and respect Andy by the time she gets hit by the car as she starts to take the job more seriously. She compliments Andy's dress, thanks her for her help at the ball, giving extra insight for how she got the scarves over the phone than merely saying 'I got them late' before literally and metaphorically being swept off her feet at the news of Paris
As a stylist I can 100% confirm that modern clothing is underrated. A lot of people underestimate the talent of putting a great outfit together! This movie is a masterclass on styling!
You should analyze the Queen’s Gambit! It’s set in the 60s and the main character, Beth (played by Anya Taylor-Joy), reuses her outfits, so I think you would appreciate that :)
@@arikajj Yes! And this woman, Anna Biller, wrote, edited, directed, produced, and scored it, AND hand-stitched EVERY article of clothing worn in the entire movie, and there are a ton of fabulous, fabulous outfits
In a deleted scene you can see Andy first go to human resources, where they tell her its either motor world or runway, but she must go to the runway office that same day, so she has to run to runway (you can see she's out of breath in the take of her in front of the building which is in the movie) That's why she isn't prepared for the interview! I think it was cut out of the script for some reason, I believe I learned about this in a video by the channel "lessons from the screenplay" where they analyze the opening scene of devil wears prada.
Ok, I understand that, but surely she has not lived under the rock not to know how to spell Gabbana, I mean if it was Moschino she was asking how to spell, I would understand, I don't care about fashion, mostly as I can't afford it, but those big names are everywhere, even 10 years ago. Plus naturally you will make an effort if you are going to the job interview, looking sloppy and disheveled will make you look unprofessional.
That's a very interesting bit, because it changes completely how we see Andy. But Maybe that's what the director wanted us to feel/think, that Andy is unprepared and feels like she's better and above "this world", which ties together with Miranda's monologue on the belts and what Nigel tells her when she's complaining to him about Miranda. It looks to me like the reason to remove the scene was to tie the story and character development better.
So let me get this straight: Andy chose to settle for her pathetic boyfriend who is allowed to follow his dream but mocks and belittles her because he feels insecure and inferior? I HATEEEEE him. Like damn, if you want to make a feminist movie, then DO IT. Make Andy not need anyone, have her be empowered and be strong and follow her passion and command respect. Ah. Also, I wish Emily blunt got more roles like this, she was SO much fun.
Well, to be fair (yes I know that this comment is from a year ago) Andy's passion was journalism, not fashion. The job as an assistant - albeit for Miranda Priesley, with all the due perks - is understandably a stepping stone for her; I totally agree her boyfriend and her friends were just a bunch of self-centered jerks all throughout, but at some point she had to quit her job at Runaway to pursue a career in journalism (and hopefully become like Miranda, only the Devil in her case wears Chanel)
I saw the Broadway version recently (before seeing the movie or reading the book) and (slight spoilers?) firmly believe they should’ve broken up. They even portrayed him as mostly supportive, but it was still obvious their lives were on different trajectories and a break up was/is inevitable. It doesn’t make either party a bad person either, they just weren’t the right fit (and it doesn’t help their case that they’d been dating since freshman year of college, like yeah sometimes that works out but I seriously doubt most people find “the one” at 18)
@@gabrielemanderioli2113 And that is what bothers me the most. He knows she will not do that job forever. It makes me wonder how long they would last together during a real crisis and also ask the question of what if the roles were reversed. Would she give him a hard time and all if he was working long hours for a demanding head chef(plausible)? Say the place is just a restaurant version of 'Runway', the chef is like Miranda but, if being realistic here..., a bit more crazy. Does she make a big deal out of it knowing he only has to do it for a few years and then he might be able to get to his goal? Does she insult his cooking new fancy things because they've only ever eaten cheaper foods? Does she make him feel worse about not being able to go out and have fun because he is an adult taking on responsibilities? It was an odd relationship, and one she should've ended sooner.
That Chanel collared mini dress is SO stunning and an indie brand called L’ecol des femmes has designs that pay homage to timeless pieces like this with an unique flare - and without the exorbitant price tag ❤️
I think you could maybe make the argument that Andy didn't repeat outfits because she had to give them back to Nigel. Though I would have loved to see pieces restyled as well.
This movie did such a great job of showing what being vogue really is, what fashion is really about: personal style. Even though andy isn't into fashion she ends up developing her own personal style as she developed her identity sense of self.
Something I never see people mention is the outfit Andy wears when Emily is hit by the car and Andy officially overtakes her as Miranda's favorite assistant. Her pink and white top is nearly identical in style and silhouette to the outfit Emily wears on Andy's first day of work at the beginning of the film (note the black cardigan and boxy cut with the v-neck), symbolizing how she truly has become the New Emily and the top assistant. Most people just talk about how ugly the outfit is (which I am not arguing with, haha), but rarely the full-circle moment we get with it! I think it's just neat!
I rewatched the movie this year and I just realised how actually good and admirable Emily's character is. I mean, you don't see alot of people who is as passionate as she is toward her work! I even got frustrated when Miranda doesn't even realised how lucky she is to have a secretary like Emily!
Was probably more powerful back then. It's my understanding (I'm not American) that nowadays, people who actually want to watch documentaries avoid the History channel like the plague. And make fun of it. :-)
I like the movie, but I hated Andrea. She came to the job interview acting like she is too good for them, didn't put in much effort in the begging and once she did, everything started working out for her. If you compare her to Emily, who tried so hard for so long, it's just frustrating.
It is honestly sickening. Her arrogance in that moment was horrible. I wouldn't even go into a job interview in fast food like that. Like you are a new grad in New York City trying to work in journalism. To treat a job working as an assistant to the Editor and Chief of huge fashion magazine as beneath her is delusional. Emily was right to hate her.
I hate how ppl love to victimize her and act like her boyfriend was this evil disconsidered person when the first thing she does when she comes home with him is either mocking the girls in the industry or complaining about it. I don't know what ppl expect him to do when she spends all her time at home trashing the fashion world. She was the one who chose to work in a place that she has no interested in being in, laughing in her boss presence about something that is mean to be serious, that's just disrespectful. At some point Miranda, Nigel, her boyfriend and Emily called her out on this behavior. I had 0 sympathy for her. If there's someone that I feel bad about her is Emily, she was just giving her 100 % the whole time and she ends up being ran over.
@@stefanmakara373 I personally don't think they needed to explicitly address that, the audience isn't stupid and her character growth and increasingly nuanced understanding of the industry is pretty clear to us throughout the film. Main characters are usually flawed so that we can see them grow and change. Lots of people are arrogant and dismissive towards the fashion industry- Andy is real!! she represents a very real type of intellectual who views the industry in this way (edit: as someone mentioned below, this rejection was likely from internalised misogyny as Andy subconsciously rejected this world in the hopes of looking smarter, being taken more seriously etc.). I don't think the movie praises her for having this attitude at the beginning, she is deliberately shown to be judgey, entitled and naive- that's why we get the whole monologue where miranda humbles her for thinking she's above fashion. I also don't think the movie praises her rejection of that lifestyle at the end either- the whole message of the film is balance and nuance- they don't need to tell us this directly because we can use film comprehension to realise that miranda and the fashion industry are complicated- both are impressive, smart, creative but also toxic at the same time. Andy comes away with a more understanding view towards this world, but inevitably her renewed value for work/life balance trumps that- we can't hate her for being human lol
@@marcdaisy12 I think, she should have been humbled more. You can make characters, that are human, but still likeable, like Emily. She is not some saint, but you can see her reasons for treating Andrea coldly, whereas Andrea is just very, very entitled. I get, that she pushes fashion away to appear "smarter", because "fashionable equals dumb" was a huge stereotype at the time, but that doesn't justify her being disrespectful to other people. If she was as smart, as she thought she was, she would know, that running any successful large scale business is not easy. I don't think many people can relate to coming to a job interview right after getting a degree and acting like you are too good for this. This could all be saved, if everything didn't work out perfectly for her in the end. I would like to see her get some "punishment" for her behavior, so she can be redeemed, but instead she got everything, she wanted without putting in any extra effort and left the magazine. Especially when compared to Emily, it didn't feel right. Emily, who worked so hard for her goal, just to see it being handed to Andrea, is much more relatable.
Funnily, I also hated the hat Andy was wearing when Miranda told her she was going to Paris. However, with time I saw that it made sense from a visual storytelling standpoint. When I first saw it I thought "she's gone too far with that hat. It turns the outfit into a costume", but maybe that's what we are supposed to think, that at this point and having to make all the sacrifices she has to make for that job, maybe she's going too far and turning into a caricature of what she hated so much in the beginning. The outfit is too much because in that moment she realized that she is in too deep and we have to see it. I don't know. Maybe I'm just over analyzing.
I think your on to something, that’s why she took off the hat while talking to Miranda. In the commentary Dvd portion, the producer says it takes a lot of courage to wear a hat while taking to Miranda. People wear those Victorian paperboy hats though, like minimized versions in solid colors like in camel or black, not as oversized and in tweed lol. My mom and sister love wearing those lol.
nah u gotta be right with that!! that hat specifically was a fleeting trend in the 2000s (and unfortunately recently as well) as opposed to some of the other timeless outfits she wears- it's really like she's too trendy and lost in that world- wow u are wise
That hat was a moment in 00s fashion. You can see examples of it everywhere: in TV shows of that period or on celebrities at that time. It was fugly but it was a thing and I can see someone in Andy's line of work wearing it.
Hated that hat too and agree on the costumeification. True style is when you wear clothing effortlessly, being a fashion follower is when clothing wears you.
I also like how Emily and Andy actually start becoming more friendly after Andy has her makeover. You can really feel the time passing and Andy starting to grow on Emily.
That movie made me want the same kind of bangs Andy has, while being well aware that does not suit my face … yeah, waiting for those damned bangs to grow was PAINFUL
@@wanderlust9372 I’m growing out my bangs, and when I put in a headband or a high ponytail, the ends of the bangs just stick out and look rlly funny😭😭😭
that movie made me stay in fashion, lol. Everytime I had a hard time in this world, I always re-watched it and it reminded me of why I loved it even if it's really not easy. And that my job could be worse, lol And so many of my co-workers did the same.... That movie is just so painfully delightfully relatable
“Emily Charlton... the only Emily who deserves to go to Paris.” *cue corny comment* Damn! Netflix needs some medical attention for those third degree burns!
Something I've always loved about the styling and approach to fashion in this movie is that it's (maybe?) the only fashion-oriented movie I can think of where the male gaze is not at all considered or even mentioned. The clothing and styling is about about fashion, rather than looking attractive. Emily's makeup looks like something out of those "top ten trends men HATE" articles, Andy's never taught how to dress to look thinner or hide her body, there's no mention of women wanting to look hot or sexy in ANY scene. Miranda's age is only mentioned once and she's never dressed to look younger either.
I NEVER did like the fact that “Andy” had an unsupportive bf, had the wrong friends, had to sacrifice AND not able to evolve or morph into who she was becoming to save her relationship when all she was really doing is reaching her goals!
Omg. Loved that series. The acting, the outfits, the music, the cinematography, and of course the beautiful computer graphics on the ceilings. I didn’t think I’d be able to sit through a series about chess, but the tv show team pulled it off by developing strong character development.
i loved the way Beths style matured and reflected what was going on inside her as she faced darker challenges/themes throughout the series, so creative
As an artist myself, whenever I'm drawing or designing a new character, I always make sure that their outfit matches their personality. I also tend to play with shapes a lot. Round shapes - typically used for characters that are sweet, kind, innocent, cowardly and naive. Square shapes - used for character that are strong, sturdy and reliable. Triangles / sharp shapes - used for characters that are cunning, dangerous, manipulative and villainous. Although I do believe that the social status & financial situation of that character also plays an important role, I believe that expectations can also be subverted : like having a very wealthy character going around wearing simple clothes (I feel like this trope is more common among rich characters that are on the good side, because evil rich characters tend to go out of their way dressing as lavishly as possible).
A word in defence of Andy's lack of prep for her job interview. She hadn't prepared for Runway because she didn't actually apply there. There's a deleted scene where she has a more general meeting with someone in HR at Elias Clark, the publishers and was told there were two jobs available, one of which was as a road test assistant at Auto Universe Magazine. When she said it was this or Auto Universe, she meant it! She then got sent straight up to Runway to meet Emily, so didn't exactly have time to prep. Granted, she could have at least pretended to give a shit in her interview, but the lack of prep wasn't entirely her fault.
I'm sorry but this movie is just so sophisticated for 2006, and no one can disagree with that. anyways, thanks for the analysis! loved the vid and the collab! your channel is such a blessing; I love it! 💖✨
I'm still hoping she'll do Heathers (1989) I know each character wears the specific colors for a reason, but what do they mean? And also what she thinks of the costumes. Which was her favorite which did she hate?
I really liked the brown dress with the tall boots and brown trench coat that Andy wears during her montage, the Channel boots ensemble after her makeover and the outfit she's wearing when she quits
@@btsisthegenre4071 it's a reference to a main character (named Emily) from a truly awful Netflix series also called Emily in paris who is horrible and lazy and bad at her job and doesn't deserve the promotion she gets to go to Paris unlike Emily from the devil wears Prada who is hardworking.
I totally agree that the people in Andy’s life were toxic and she should have dumped them, but I think think that the point at the end still stands. She was selling her soul, sacrificing her relationships, and losing her empathy. It wasn’t healthy, and after she left Emily could become what she had worked so hard for and genuinely loved.
And her friends and boyfriend were toxic bc they were trying to explain this to her? So her salary should have been going to Channel jackets so she had more and more expensive pieces to show off every day? What's toxic about friends trying to tell you being artificial is not a good way to go.
@@mayc8674 it’s the fact andy was aware of this. she knew the job was eating away at her social life, she knew she wasn’t treating emily right at the end, she was doing it so she could get the job she loves. her friends and bf were not supportive at any point, even before she went through a style transformation. andy got them all gifts and a second later they tease her, stealing her phone when her boss calls. it’s toxic.
@@spoon444 I think you have it backwards. Andy was unaware of it but her friends were trying to tell her what she found out at the end. They were only trying to tell her that she was becoming like her boss.
@@mayc8674 that’s untrue. andy says multiple times to her father, bf, christian, etc that she is working towards being a journalist, working this job is what will make her in the industry. her friends were judging her sudden interest in fashion, her change in work ethic and her lack of judgement in what they first made fun of together. when her bf’s birthday is taking place she even turns down her chance to meet other editors & journalists so she can be there for him.

“I want a new fashion movie for a new decade” rang so true to me it’s unreal. Been waiting for our own generations “sex and the city” type show, but I guess we are SOL 😭
I wanna be like Miranda when it comes to her presence . All she needs to do is give a look of disappointment or gently talk to you in a condescending manner, and you automatically want to please her and do what she request of you. She is so confident in her status/ self that she is super calm. It’s terrifyingly beautiful.

And also I hate consumerism
I always though that Andy is in a different outfit every time because is giving back the clothes to the Runway closet, so Nigel is putting together new outfits with other clothes the company is bringing. Also I need every single outfit that she has and I'm guilty of trying to replicate the last one 😂
When you mentioned her friends being trash I got so happy. "Emily Charlton the only Emily who deserves to go to Paris" FACTSSS

L
Can we talk about the hair too? The stylists did GREAT!
- Emily's red hair
- Miranda's white hair
- Andy's bangs
Ooh I have a hair theory about Andy's initial hair that looked like extremely poorly blended extensions (presumably that is what they did), with the really sad dry lengths, the medium lengths and non-committal bangs pushed to the sides. I think Andy tried to get bangs a couple of years back, changed her mind about them and let them grow out but did not cut the other lengths to match. And then very recently she decided to get bangs again and was unsure, hence the way she parts them. I think she actually does care about how she looks to some degree pre-Runway; otherwise, why would she keep trying to get bangs?
Yes. The hair is great too!
I would've liked they styled Miranda's hair in a different way for the night of the gala, though.
love all of it (Emily's fashion. Miranda's sense of fashion, Andy's personally picked outfits)
The only plot hole that bothers me: if Andy genuinely wanted to be a journalist, she would have researched Miranda beforehand.
I agree!! , but also kind of makes sense since she is just a graduate and underestimates the fashion world 🤷🏻♀️
I always took that as Andy being a little "not like other girls" in her mentality, like she assumed it would be easy there because they're all materialistic fashion girls so she didn't need to bother?
There are deleted scenes. She was supposed to be interviewing for a position at an auto mag and was re routed by the headhunter at the last minute. That’s why she was not prepared.
@@freedakaye6720 that makes sense! Thank you
It fits because she’s inexperienced and not serious about herself, just wanted to get a job.

The car: I'm about to end this woman's whole career.
Emily’s story is just so sad
The injury from the car accident though, I hope she didn't suffer any permanent deformity or chronic pain.
I hope she didn't need any major surgeries.
I feel bad for her in that hospital. Sucks to lose a trip to Paris, but definitely sucks harder to be lying in a hospital with your body being broken and bruised.

I think the friends are pretty poorly thought through characters in the film. The whole relationship dynamic doesn't make sense and they just gloss over it. It's the only bit of the film that winds me up because it's so illogical that he wouldn't be supportive.
@@OfficialROZWBRAZEL I suppose you could look at it from that point of view. I personally think they just lifted the characters from the original book and dropped their backstory from the plot.

Took a WAY TOO personal interest in Miranda's personal life after one simple exchange that won Andy's sympathy, and yet 2.) Took an unnecessarily self righteous position when Miranda looked out for herself at, unfortunately, Nigel's expense.
Emily’s look softens through the movie. Her early looks are like armor. Later looks are more approachable, even the hair!
He was a total creep

Misogyny
(so how about your internal misogyny to associate vanity with femininity?)
Her choice to not put time and effort into looking stylish is a consequence of her choice to put her time and effort into other things that mattered to her more at that time.
I felt the same way about Legally Blonde growing up - I loved that Elle DIDNT have to give up her girly style to be smart.
“the only emily that deserves to go to paris” IM DEAD

@@btsisthegenre4071 its a reference to the tv show “emily in paris” which hasn’t been very adored by fashion lovers

Honorable styling mentions!:
Emily's sharp eye makeup! It helps catch her judging eye and fierce demeanor
Miranda's earrings and sunglasses are iconic. They show expensiveness, and of course, the sunglasses also show her dismissiveness
And finally Andy's hair! It transforms with her style and helps build her silhouette, going from a bit messy to more put together (those bangs 👀)
I hope there were cheers in the theatre when they took those awful extensions out of Andy’s hair 😂
Emily's makeup was seeeexy. I hope the makeup dept got some sort of award for that. It wasn't overdone but still made a statement about her character, not easy to do onscreen!
“I rarely say this to people who aren’t me, but you’ve got to calm down!”

I think thw current reality of fashion plays importan part as well. 80s, 90s & 2006-2013s fashion were fantastic. Until 2015 and forward, the fashion industry is getting crappier with horrid trends & influencers creeping in. I truly & honestly believe the Age of Kardashians had influenced fashion in a bad way.
my headcanon is that Andy dropped her trash friends and never looked back!

I want to see her do it knowing that it’s not an old life v. new life but just knowing that they suck

I love that everyone hates Andy's trash boyfriend, because the actor has liked multiple twitter posts saying the same thing.
Really??? That's very cool of him lmao
A true chad
he's a man child. Missing his birthday was a little bit shitty but the rest of it? He should have been much much more supportive of her. That was a real opportunity and those are hard to come by in her field. He could have put his big girl panties on for awhile.
@@brendakerber7923 yes, I saw a meme that says the boyfriend is the real villain and I agree
That boyfriend: 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
If i remember correctly he was also toxic af about the fact that she made more money than him (i watched it like 10 years ago i could be extremely wrong)
there is a book sequel about emily but synopsis says it’s not about her working in fashion
i really disliked her boyf too!
Emily's makeup is flawless too. Her green eyeshadow virtually steals every scene she appears in. Also, Anne's lips could be a movie on their own.
I always liked her green shades. Very fashiony.
One thing I want to mention is that Andy's final dress looks so much alike silhouettes wise to the dress that we first see Emily in, probably hinting that's she is not only becoming like Mirada, but also like emily
yes!!
and how she is beating emily too like becoming the number one assistant
"Emily Charlton the only Emily who deserves to go to Paris" FACTSSS
The final outfit also matches the fountain at the end of the movie
Literally HATED Andy's friends and boyfriend
Right?! Even my friends who aren’t into fashion support my interests because that’s what good friends are supposed to do. And when I get a boyfriend, I’m gonna find someone who appreciates my passion for fashion or at least someone who doesn’t make snarky remarks about it.
I remember how I wanted to punch Andy's bf when he said he doesn't understand why women needs so many bags. It's not a big thing but it affected me. 😅
They where the villains of the movie soooo goddam toxic
thank god it wasn't just me
When the book/film came out I said Andys friends and boyfriend were trash and her quitting at the end was ridiculous. Everyone thought I was nuts I'm glad more people are coming round to my opinion
As a kid: like Andy's friends, hate Emily
As an adult: loathe Andy's friends, stan Emily
i remember feeling upset for her bf when she missed his bday. i now realise how immature and childish he was.
@@adelakolarikova8380 sounds right, but it still was too trigerring for young girls. I was in middle school when I watched this and i felt bad
@@PRM77 no, they really didn't. the bf couldn't care less. and the gf was fine until she saw andy let the guy kiss her while still dating her bf
I guess I was the only one who thought that from the start. not real friends.
unevolved: hating Emily
evolved: hating Andy's friends and boyfriend
actually evolved: hating everyone including andy
Emily was a bitch. If you ever work with someone slightly superior than an entry level you'll see there are so many Emilies who pretend to be the boss. The friends weren't as bad as you think, they just saw how Andy changed to become part of the world she mocked herself before and it wasn't even ever a thing she wanted to be. The only thing I agree is that Andy's boyfriend is a major child and needs to grow up.

She also kinda cheated on him and he just wants to her to be around . It’s very clear that He needs a partner who spends time with him and he isn’t wrong for that
He constantly supported her actual dream and not her running around for her boss

I never thought that Nate was bad, but it didn't make sense when they got back together though.
One thing that stood out to me about Miranda, is that her age amplifies her beauty. Everything to her outfits to her makeup, and hairstyle has a very natural look. 13:14 About Emily's future: in the sequel to the Devil Wears Prada book, Emily and Andy become business partners and run together a bridal magazine (they occasionally use the fact that they worked for Miranda to get what they want from people in the publishing industry)
That is simply PERFECT!
why did emily leave the job if u dont mind me asking?
@@bennyton2560 to be honest, I don't remember the reason very well because I've red the book many years ago, but, as far as I remember, when Andy and her meet again for the first time after many years without seeing each other, she had already left Runaway and was working somewhere else
Only one thing i'd add: Emily's belt is to enhance her silhouette, since she's starving herself she really wants people to notice she's skinny
Same! I hope the end of the movie isn't the end of their not-yet-friendship cause they could be great bffs!
As a stylist I can 100% confirm that modern clothing is underrated. A lot of people underestimate the talent of putting a great outfit together! This movie is a masterclass on styling!

In a deleted scene you can see Andy first go to human resources, where they tell her its either motor world or runway, but she must go to the runway office that same day, so she has to run to runway (you can see she's out of breath in the take of her in front of the building which is in the movie) That's why she isn't prepared for the interview! I think it was cut out of the script for some reason, I believe I learned about this in a video by the channel "lessons from the screenplay" where they analyze the opening scene of devil wears prada.
that'd make sense, tho in the book I'm pretty sure the scene doesn't exist either
@@justarandomperson.4205 I think they do mention in the book but I haven't read it in forever so I could be wrong.
In the book i remember the interview appearing last minute
That's a very interesting bit, because it changes completely how we see Andy. But Maybe that's what the director wanted us to feel/think, that Andy is unprepared and feels like she's better and above "this world", which ties together with Miranda's monologue on the belts and what Nigel tells her when she's complaining to him about Miranda. It looks to me like the reason to remove the scene was to tie the story and character development better.
I’m glad we’ve universally agreed that Andy’s friends are toxic
So let me get this straight: Andy chose to settle for her pathetic boyfriend who is allowed to follow his dream but mocks and belittles her because he feels insecure and inferior? I HATEEEEE him. Like damn, if you want to make a feminist movie, then DO IT. Make Andy not need anyone, have her be empowered and be strong and follow her passion and command respect. Ah.
Also, I wish Emily blunt got more roles like this, she was SO much fun.
In the book she didn't have a boyfriend. Just roommates and a BFF
'Make Andy not need anyone' hahaha! Your comment is ridiculous, apparently you know nothing about the real empowerment.
I like how the movie didn't focus too heavily on trends. This is why it's aged so well.

I think you could maybe make the argument that Andy didn't repeat outfits because she had to give them back to Nigel. Though I would have loved to see pieces restyled as well.
But didn’t she call emily at the end of the movie asking if she wants to have the clothes? Or do I remember it wrong
@@zeynepalara.y The clothes she gives to Emily were from Paris.
And at least they bothered to give an excuse for the expensive clothes, something the Netflix writers did not bother do.

"See, I'm on this new diet. Well, I don't eat anything. And right before I feel I'm going to faint, I eat a cube of cheese"
That line alone made me want to start the movie over and pay more attention to the writing
This is my favorite quote from the whole movie😂😂😂
“If they want a documentary, they can watch the history channel.”
Is such a powerful quote tbh.
Was probably more powerful back then. It's my understanding (I'm not American) that nowadays, people who actually want to watch documentaries avoid the History channel like the plague. And make fun of it. :-)
"The only thing I would change is having Andy realize her friends are trash and she doesn't need their toxicity." YES PLEASE THANK YOU
I like the movie, but I hated Andrea.
That pissed me off too. She didn’t do any research into what she was even applying to and looked like a slob. It’s an insult no matter the job.
My mom and sister love wearing those lol.
nah u gotta be right with that!! that hat specifically was a fleeting trend in the 2000s (and unfortunately recently as well) as opposed to some of the other timeless outfits she wears- it's really like she's too trendy and lost in that world- wow u are wise
it's probably cause of the ethic behaviour code-yeah, you don't talk to someone hierarchially superior to you while your hat is on(staying indoors)
I love how if you speak with any fan of this movie everyone agrees that the friends are trash, and andy deserves berter
I also like how Emily and Andy actually start becoming more friendly after Andy has her makeover. You can really feel the time passing and Andy starting to grow on Emily.
As put by Marc Jacobs, "To me, clothing is a form of self-expression - there are hints about who you are in what you wear".
I dont remember who said it it was totally on point that the hat you're wearing is what you want to be and the shoes you wear are who you are.
Emily's eye makeup is amazing, especially with her red hair
You're kidding. I thought they did that as a joke, to make her look trashy. I cant stand her wardrobe, personality, or lack of values.
This movie made me want to work in fashion
Me too!!
I think this movie played a big part in my growing interest in fashion as a teenager.
that movie made me stay in fashion, lol. Everytime I had a hard time in this world, I always re-watched it and it reminded me of why I loved it even if it's really not easy. And that my job could be worse, lol And so many of my co-workers did the same.... That movie is just so painfully delightfully relatable
I really appreciate movies/shows with costume design that show that you can be stylish and sexy at any age.
Considering how Miranda threw Emily and Nigel under the bus, I have to wonder if sacrificing everything for your job is truly worth it.
of course it isn't, your boss doesn't care about you
congrats you got the point of the movie...
“Emily Charlton... the only Emily who deserves to go to Paris.”
*cue corny comment* Damn! Netflix needs some medical attention for those third degree burns!
“Conservative English women with money” 💀💀 LMAOOO the accuracy of this statement
Yes !!! It's not even an intentional drag !! Please ,!!! Boring !!
truer words have never been spoken
that montage scene with her new wardrobe is ICONIC. i love every outfit
Emily absolutely has an outfits calendar to spread out her designer pieces to make it appear as if she has more than she actually does.
I NEVER did like the fact that “Andy” had an unsupportive bf, had the wrong friends, had to sacrifice AND not able to evolve or morph into who she was becoming to save her relationship when all she was really doing is reaching her goals!
I'd really love to see a "Princess Diaries" style analysis
or Love Witch!
Yes!
Yessss
both princess diaries 1 & 2 yess!!
A channel called Campbell2000 has Princess Diaries on their channel
You should analyse the Queens gambit outfits, they are *amazing* and Beth reuses some outfits which would be a change
Omg. Loved that series. The acting, the outfits, the music, the cinematography, and of course the beautiful computer graphics on the ceilings.
I didn’t think I’d be able to sit through a series about chess, but the tv show team pulled it off by developing strong character development.
OMG YES THIS DESERVES STYLE ANALYSIS
i loved the way Beths style matured and reflected what was going on inside her as she faced darker challenges/themes throughout the series, so creative
@@babieeden totally agree, and the colour green was always used in her outfits to represent when something bad was happening which was a good touch
“Conservative English woman with money” 🤣🤣🤣
Which she actually is🤣
As an artist myself, whenever I'm drawing or designing a new character, I always make sure that their outfit matches their personality.
Granted, she could have at least pretended to give a shit in her interview, but the lack of prep wasn't entirely her fault.
andy's outfit montage when she gets into the fashion groove gets me going every time
I love the opening montage of the film too and will sometimes just put it on in the background. But then I just end up watching the whole movie.
I'm sorry but this movie is just so sophisticated for 2006, and no one can disagree with that.
anyways, thanks for the analysis!
loved the vid and the collab! your channel is such a blessing; I love it! 💖✨
Does this mean confessions of a shopaholic is coming
One of my favorite movies omg! Havent watched it in a while tho
We had to watch that movie for finance class in middle school lol. It was good though.
I'm still hoping she'll do Heathers (1989) I know each character wears the specific colors for a reason, but what do they mean? And also what she thinks of the costumes. Which was her favorite which did she hate?
I hope so. I love that movie! Haven’t watched it in forever but I vividly remember how colorful it was
ugh i loved that movie
I really liked the brown dress with the tall boots and brown trench coat that Andy wears during her montage, the Channel boots ensemble after her makeover and the outfit she's wearing when she quits
Seeing the sad styling for The Devil Wears Prada Musical vs the amazing work done here 😂
Is it weird that I have a crush on Miranda? Like, her confidence, style, and power are just so attractive to me.
Also, Meryl Streep rocking that short hair, just wow. She has a better jawline than me and I just graduated high school! 😂
We want to be with her, we want to BE her.
I think it helps that Meryl Streep is absolutely gorgeous, even in the scene with no makeup!
Rawrrr it’s that cougar in her 😉
'The only Emily that deserves to go to Paris' loveeeeeeeee thisssssss
everyone is repeating this line is it an iconic line that i don't know of ? or it's a reference to something ?
@@spoon444 You got a point, it's true. Looks like they felt bad that they were not going forwards in their lives and mocked her bc she was leaving them behind, so they felt.
"That is not costume design. She's just styling designer pieces."
How insulting and rude to the crew.
They might as well have said, "You just put it together from a pile of stuff."
I love, love, love her green dress. It’s just chef’s kiss 💋
thank u god for this moment
I somehow HATE every character in this movie, except for Emily I kinda like her, yet it's really good!
Yeah, tbh I never really liked andy either. To be fair she started out condescending and changed. But from the start, Emily just wanted to be successful in doing what she loved.
"What, was it a phone interview?" I would fight Andy's trash boyfriend
“I want a new fashion movie for a new decade” rang so true to me it’s unreal. Been waiting for our own generations “sex and the city” type show, but I guess we are SOL 😭
It’s Euphoria, isn’t it I?
I wanna be like Miranda when it comes to her presence . All she needs to do is give a look of disappointment or gently talk to you in a condescending manner, and you automatically want to please her and do what she request of you. She is so confident in her status/ self that she is super calm. It’s terrifyingly beautiful.
YES PLEASE REUSE THE CLOTHES!! Every somewhat fashion aware person knows that just accessories can be a game changer, let alone different pieces combined together. i love "shopping my closet", i can only imagine how awesome it would be if someone who is fashion educated would do that, so much more creativity can be displayed!
My conspiracy: Emily in Paris was so ugly to prove her point that Devil’s costuming was important to costume design
Makes senseeeeeee
Agreed.
I liked it but the issue is you have to be Lilly Collins to make it look good
@@ber1779 lily Collins could wear a rubbish bag and still look good.
When you mentioned her friends being trash I got so happy. They were mad because she was developing in a way they didnt expect and didn't support that her goals can change but that never meant that her true character would change which I don't think it did. Sorry this is one thing I could go on about for DAYS lol
