@@drphot6050How is she a cultural appropriator? She was born in New York and her “Blaccent” is a typical urban New Yorker accent I hear from people of many different backgrounds.
There are actors that I think can work well as voice actors. Tim Curry, Jack Black, Ron Perlman, just to name a few. But voice acting is a totally different medium from normal acting and that is what studios need to understand.
Which is ironic because he's a non-voice actor who has done voice work, he's literally the poster child of what you guys should be bitching about. But he had a penis so that's fine, when a girl does it though? Nope, stop the fucking presses lol can't have that.
@@F0UR3V3R This, some studios also don't seem to appreciate the need for a voice director. It may be an unsung job, but it's vital in voice acting IMO, cause you can really tell when the voice director is asleep at the wheel or not doing their job, Mass Effect Andromeda is a good example of this in that it's not just poorly written dialogue, but you can tell the voice director wasn't asking for additional takes to get the voice acting right (or at least decent).
not sure if that is the intent, but it is how things end up. also that isn't just animated films. look at how awkwafina ruined shang-chi by yet again refusing to act as anything but the most insufferable person ever.
@@angrybellsprout oh that was her?! i hated that movie because of her, literally ruined the pacing of the whole thing. every scene she had was a waste.
The original voice is so iconic and I really wish they didn't give her the role 😭 scuttle is like the silliest and cutest character in that series so I was so upset watching it when his voice was irritating
Because of the same reason: the average kid isnt noticing “Dang! This voice acting sucks!”, but in SOME cases, is actually recognizing, per say “Oh! Mr. Beast is a voice actor in this!” (At least MY experience with younger siblings)
I will say that when The Lorax was released in 2012 I was 7 years old and one of the reasons I wanted to watch it was because Taylor Swift voiced one of the main characters.
Not to mention how all animated films are dubbed for other languages. And yes, audiences outside of the English speaking world being in a LOT of revenue. Jack Black famously laughed at how he’s been to China several times promoting Kung Fu Panda only to introduce the famous person who voices the version in Chinese, and who is massively famous. 😂
Part of it for me isn't even that Awkwafina gets cast so often; it's that she never switches it up. Either she has to start challenging herself, or the directors have to start telling her that she has to stop practicing stand up when it's time to get in the booth. Not every single character she plays HAS to be a comedian
Even Ellen DeGeneres (drama over how she treats her workers aside...) Could make Dory sound both funny and sympathetic. Old comedians used to handle drama as good as they can comedy. (Look at Robin Williams.) New ones think just yelling random words is funny.
Agreed. I can't tell if she's typecasting herself or the studios are typecasting her. Either way, what she's doing/way she's acting has gotten way, way too old. We either need her to do something fresh and new or GET someone fresh and new
It’s all the painfully unfunny, “well, that just happened” type of humor where the character says 100 silly things per minute and none of it lands. It’s bad now and it’s going to age even worse. Nothing with her in it is going to be considered classic.
I'm so tired of hearing the phoned in Jack Black voice for every single role so they can hook people with a name and have him sing a shitty song. People have to stop defending this.
not to mention the fact that he's actually done voice acting in videogames too, Double fine made a whole game around metal music and they had Jack Black voice the main character and they pulled him in again for Phsycobauts 2 to play a character there and you don't even realize its Jack black until he _sings_ He was literally Perfect for Bowser in the Mario Bros movie. Chris Pratt can jump in a lake though, New York Mario is just...wrong... EDIT: Clarification of "New York Mario Bad" because Im sick to the teeth of fuckers replying with a variation of "no u wrong" I mean I have _only ever witnessed Mario in the form of His true game self_ with his iconic _Italian accent_ , I am not nor ever will be an American, and thus; I have never seen Mario in _anything_ other than _Games_ Mario without an Italian accent is wrong to me because that is how he is _supposed to sound_ given my experience with Mario. its _extremely Jarring_ to go from a High pitched "WAA HOO! Its-a Me!" to _Chris_ fucking _Pratt_ . he was perfect for Emmet because Emmet is supposed to be Generic Lego construction worker Minifig No70800 not so much for _Mario_ who is one of if not the most Iconic vidogame character of all time, his red M Hat ALONE is enough to make you go "Oh hey Mario"
Honestly, I think he did a pretty good job, all things considered. At least he put on a Brooklyn accent instead of just being 100% himself. That's more than most celebrities do when they get animated roles these days.
i agree that he is a miscast and they shouldn’t be hiring him only cause of his name n his performance for lego movie. but he did good on onwards and he wasn’t a terrible or even bad mario. garfield is a bit so-so but i didn’t mind it to much, still a miscast for sure tho
i hate actors that turn the characters into themselves instead of them turning into the character. it's like they're not acting, they're just hanging out.
The dragon is what made me said fuck it. A dragon has no reason to be trying to relate to modern aged kids with that stupid math class relation attempt

One thing I absolutely hate about celebrity voice acting is that 1. Most of them are just not voice actors, they don't know what the hell they're doing And 2. Whenever they make tv series for the movies, they have to change the cast anyway and use real voice actors because hiring the celebrity is too expensive. Which leads to weird voice changes
For the first point, I wanna bring respect to the actors who actually try. Like for example, the Rock said he asked VA’s for advice before voicing Maui. And for The SMB Movie, Chris Pratt said he asked if he could be wicked Italian, and also got pointers from Charles Martinet.
I don't have much of an issue with celebrity voice acting (especially if the cast is well-directed), but I totally agree with the second point. If you think you’re not going to pay the same actors at some point like you did back then, you might as well hire lower profiles in the first place.
Prime example: My Little Pony: A New Generation. They hired big celebrities for their movie to gain traction, and then once it came to making animated series to continue the story, they switched to actual VAs. There's nothing wrong with the VAs they chose for the series, but because they had to make a switch, the characters sound nothing alike anymore.
Couldn’t agree more with this! I’m so tired of Awkwafina. Not just her though, often if I hear celebrity voices in these movies it takes me out of the world and the narrative because their voices are so recognizable.
I don't mind celebrity voice actors as long as they do a good job - but I'm strongly against using celebrities JUST for the sake of celebrities. I'd rather have someone who knows what they're doing than a Brand Name 😒
@@CesarinPillinGamingWhich is not inherently bad, considering for example the that Puss in boots is a Zorro parody and they have Antonio Banderas playing him.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm THOROUGHLY impressed my chris pratt being able to sound like himself but add the character to the voice. It's like; you know its him if you're THINKING about it.
It seems like whenever they have an Asian oriented animation too they have to include Awkafina as the famous Asian instead of hiring new talented Asians for the role.
Sadly I think this is actually true for all Asian American movies, not just animated ones. After crazy rich asians got big, I feel like i keep seeing those same handful of actors and actresses over and over again playing the same types of characters (nerdy fob, quirky & sassy, king fu master or stoic assassin with honor ™ , Tiger parents, etc). It feels like Hollywood refuses to even *try* to look for any new Asian talent or come up with a new character concept and it’s so annoying
That, and I wish theyd stop typecasting Asian Women as Sherlock Holmes. How many times is a promising young asian actor going to be forced to smoke a pipe and deduce the identity of killers in victorian London?!
that's because they're whitewashed and separated from their heritage enough so they fit the inclusivity mold while not actually having to employ non whites. walt was a nazi and nothing has changed.
Imagine being so well known for irritating noises that you get casted as an animated bird. Twice. And not even one of the more interesting species. A seagull and a pigeon.
if the mention of her being casted in storks was her being a bird, make that three times because she was also Scuttle (the seagull) in the live action little mermaid film.
He's one of those actors that, in a way, owns the character. J. K. Simmons is also the same guy to play J. Jonah Jameson in every instance of Spiderman, voiced or live-action.
The spider from Bad Guys ain’t quirky, she’s a snarky girlboss. Sisu from Raya isn’t quirky. Ok she’s a little quirky but she was trapped in a dang glass orb for many, many, MANY YEARS. She literally had no idea what most things that had been invented or discovered during the period she was imprisoned were. There is a difference between behavior influenced by lore and or/ the character’s personality and being “quirky”.
I miss the days when actors and VOICE actors were all different people. Now we have just... actors, and that's often a stretch. Now it's all about the name. Imagine working hard with your emotions to do voices because you don't feel comfortable enough to do live action, only to never get cast because you're not 'famous' enough 😒
@@thedestroyer2alltrolls411 Even on a short role, he wasn't so obvious. and in awkwafina's live-action movies, for a bit she was okay. but yeah now she just *exists.*
Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse and Across the Spiderverse are both great examples of movies with actors who CAN voice act. They brought so much emotion and depth to their characters. I hate that a lot of it stems from production companies trying to draw you in with recognizable names versus good voice acting.
YESSSS!!! They also didn't rely on the celebrities' names for the marketing, just story telling and animation. I didn't even know Nicolas Cage was in the movie until I looked it up after seeing it. Studios take notes!!!!
@@OoyZaza-ze8bw into the spiderverse was so good but i agree, across the spideverse was really overrated. i liked it but it failed on the writing for me, especially when it introduces so many characters then doesnt do anything with them and then the movie ends just like that and you have to wait for the second part.. what is it, a star wars movie? goddamn
I think some blame has to go on the studios and the directors. Like they're either just telling her to do her usual shtick or the no one is willing to tell her to play the character differently. If someone offered you a bunch of money basically play yourself, I think we'd all take it
@@dropenenboms496 not a good comparison. The oc was saying that the blame for poor voice casting choices like these is of the producers, not the actors, as who wouldn't take a bunch of money just to be himself in front of a microphone? No one said is a good thing, is just not Awkwafina's and others celebrities' fault. Why should they care of bad projects anyway?
I gotta admit-I really like the idea of voice acting for old time stars who are still around, such as Eartha Kit who voiced Yzma in The Emperor’s New Groove. I think it’s a nice way for an elderly professional to keep on acting when maybe doing a live action role would require considerably higher physical demands for them .
Nah this! Cause i didnt even know it was him til i became an adult. But to be fair, eddie murphy is also an exception. As a kid, when i watched clumps i had no clue it was all bro
I thought that was more of a thematic choice. Like all three were the "same" character or even a Christmas past, present, future kind of thing. Not sure but it definitely came off as a noticeable metaphor or something 😂
Awkwafina sounds like she should be able to voice act, but doesn't have a clue what she is doing and refuses to learn from her mistakes and do it right. She just sticks to her default of acting like a disney channel character.
Yeah, this seems right. I don't watch a lot of movies myself, but judging from the clips in the video, it seems clear to me that Awkwafina does have some genuine voice acting ability, at least in terms of things like enunciation and speaking animatedly (certainly a lot better than what I could do if you threw me in a recording booth). It's just that she sticks to the same performance every time regardless of the character she's supposed to be portraying. So I guess she is good at acting so long as you cast her as the one character she's willing to portray... herself. Which gets old pretty fast.
She has the perfect tomboy character voice. It’s exactly what they want when they right the characters she plays. They write them for her voice. It’s hard to complain when it fits her so well
Just want to say that Nicholas Cage is an actor who is actually good at voice acting. He leaves his wacky method acting style behind to embody the character he voices. Too bad I've only seen him get casted as a dad.
There may be a reason you feel this way. Fun fact, the voice you hear every time Nick Cage talks is actually, in a way, voice acting. I watched an interview he gave a while back where he was talking about before he was famous and how he couldn't get cast for anything. After trying and failing to get his big break over and over again, he said he needed to do something to distinguish himself from everyone else and decided to do that with his voice. He came up with the voice he has now, and practice it until he could do it flawlessly. He attributed it to what finally got him noticed and famous.
as someone who grew up during this time i definitely did care but i wouldnt watch a movie simply because a youtuber i liked voiced a character in it. it was more like a cool bonus to me
Agreed. As a kid I had no clue that Bruce Willis was the voice actor for RJ in Over the Hedge or that Steve Buscemi voiced Randall. Both did a good job in their roles
Fantastic Mr Fox is a good example of how to get actors to do good voice acting work. The way Wes Anderson filmed that movie really made the voice acting work amazing.
It's like someone sent out a memo that says, " Jack Black, Awkwafina, and Chris Pratt must be in every new movie to voice act at a mediocre level!"... Well execpt Jack, he's actually pretty decent at voice acting Edit: Thanks to you all for the support Edit 2: Alright I want to clear the air by saying, I don't think Chris Pratt is a bad dude or a bad actor, but the roles that he has done in the Voice acting buisness could've been light years better if they hired a better person, Chris is not a very good VA but his work in GOTG shows me he's at least a good on-screen actor
@@blandface9957while Jack Black is a decent voice actor, compared to actual professional voice actors, he would have trouble getting a job if he wasn't already a well known actor.
@@carontorliak2760 I don't think he'd necessarily have trouble getting work in VO, but I do agree that it's unlikely he'd be getting the top billings he currently does if he hadn't made his name ahead of time. That said, I don't think that he's unworthy of the roles he gets, either. He 100% puts in the work to both maintain and improve his skills, unlike the name actors who put in half effort and collect a major paycheck. Jack Black doesn't rank among the all-time greats (Lani Minella, Steve Blum, etc.) but I think he's solidly among the talented working voice actors that comprise most of the main/secondary characters in VO.
I approve of the message here. The industry needs more consummate professionals, but voice actors keep getting in their own way, and it's tearing the industry down around them.
I'm replaying the Nonary Games and for the first game, the protagonist's VA is somebody whose main roles were Monster High and Ever After High. He has one of the best voice acting performances I've seen for making the character sound so realistic when it comes to the smaller things.
Please remember that voice *directors* exists as well. If the direction is horrible then it doesn't matter how good the voice actor is, it will sound bad.
Saying Awkwafina has not much range is a bit of a backhanded compliment because that already makes her better than Seth Rogen, who has quite literally no range at all. While making the Super Mario Bros movie, he flat-out said he doesn't do voices, which means he has zero range by choice. It also explains why all of his animated characters are literally just himself.
@@AdderTudeI would tend to agree that he always plays himself but he’s actually the SLIGHTEST bit different in the animated show Invincible so that’s nice
As a early 2000's kid now in my 20's the 2000's up to the early 2010's around 2014 was and still is undoubtedly the peak of animated movies both 2D and 3D. *Kung-Fu Panda, Shrek, Bugs life, Car's, Toy Story, Ratatoulie, Nemo, Shark-Tale, UP, Monsters Inc, Ice Age, Megamind etc* it just goes on and on. You actually felt like the characters were their own unique beings almost feeling like real life and the thought of the actors behind the voices nearly disappeared because of how good voice acting was and how carefully picked they were for each unique roll.
In Chris Pratt’s case, it’s weird because we HAVE seen him change his style, accents and voices, so we know that he CAN do that BUT it’s more like Hollywood WANTED you to know that the characters are voices by him STRAIGHT UP for marketing reasons.
And compare that to Seth 'stupid laugh' Rogan. I can't even hate him for it, because he refuses to do anything but his voice under contract. So the studios know what they are getting when they cast him for Donkey Kong.
The roles he does are meant to be main characters but they're so overshadowed by actual good voice acting. Don't get me wrong I love Charlie Day and Crisp Rat as actors but they are shit as the Mario Brothers.
I honestly don’t have a problem with Chris Pratt voicing a character if it’s done in that way you mentioned (him changing his voice). He’ just gets casted so much for commercial reasons it just became bland and boring.
robin williams was such an amazing person. seeing the respect he had for voice actors when he voiced genie, plus his respect for art in general, reminded me how much of a rare sight in hollywood and the world at large he was. i really just miss him.
I think it comes from his background in stand up comedy. If you watch his stand up, he switches up his voice so much in his routines and knows how important it is to have range.
When I'm watching a movie and hear a celebrity voice I just think of the character they play as the celebrity because they all have the exact same voice in every movie.
I wanted to love Raya and the Last Dragon so much but Sisu was so freaking annoying that it ruined a lot of it for me. You’re so right, her character just felt like a stand up comic attempting to play a character and it was awful. I’m also so glad you mentioned Chris Pratt. Garfield is my absolute favourite character from childhood and I was horrified to hear his voice coming out of Garfield’s mouth, not to mention freaking Mario. I refused to watch either in theatre because of it. Some actors can be amazing voice actors like many of the ones mentioned. And some are amazing for single roles like David Spade is the perfect Kuzco but I can’t see him voicing many other characters well without them sounded exactly like Kuzco. But yeah some… just should never be voice acting. Ever.
I saw an interview with Hugh Jackman about the differences between screen acting and voice acting and he was emphatic about how they’re totally different worlds. I remember specifically that he said you need to really push all your emotions into the voice when voice acting, which is difficult when you’re used to acting with your whole body. And he couldn’t be more right
Agreed. I'd be really interested to see if blind people could pass a double-blind experiment where they try to see if they can reliably differentiate between animated and live-action lines/roles/scenes. All puns intended.
I saw an Intervied with the DC:AU cast once, where they said they had "famous" guest stars who could not Voice-Act at all, it really is a competely different skillset.
That's why when you see footage of the recording booth, you see the actor sometimes moving like they'll actually be seen. Helps them push out a genuine performance!
I thought I was crazy for thinking this! I feel like the best voice actors are the ones you don’t recognize until you see the credits because they’re JUST THAT TALENTED and actually have range!
@@sweeety969 The two VAs on RUclips reading tumblr posts who aren’t AI that immediately came to mind are: 1 Gianni Matragrano 2 Huggbees But there are absolutely many more than these two.
I see your point, and I do agree to some degree. However, many of the decisions are made in Hollywood, which isn't something you did wrong. From my perspective, it came across as if Awkwafina was the problem due to her lack of range and unnecessary improv that made it into the final cut. But from her perspective, it could be that she is doing what works for her and has never really been asked to try to change her style. It could also be possible that Hollywood and the directors want this to be in their final cut. I can understand your perspective, and you have a valid point. I think it's not about the actors but Hollywood as a whole, something I think you could maybe have delved more into. New sub, by the way! ❤
Antonio banderas does pus in boots because it's a nod to him being Zorro which is not only clever but i thought his gravely voice with his spanish accent was perfect for a cat lol
I actually had no idea Wagner Moura was Death because I'm not used to hearing him speak English. The last movie I saw him in was "Elite Squad: The Enemy Within" from Brazil (his home country), which is exclusively in Portuguese.
Puss in Boots is more than understandable. Not only does it come from Shrek, a franchise that parodies fairy tales and other media, but the original Puss in Boots was similar. Not exactly a Zorro type, but still a hero who was doing something for someone he cared about. Oh, and they also faced an ogre.
I've met a LOT of voice actors at anime cons - and they ALL have multiple voices and can sound amazingly different. Professional voictors use their voice as an instrument. She uses it as a weapon. I guess it could be worse - she could have named herself Perry-Air.
But are the famous? Can they sell tickets? Studios seem to have hard statistics proving that paying 10X the salary to have them voiced by people who have been in front of the camera. I may not care who is voicing some anime character but the vast majority of people would never have watched Toy Story if Mr. Potatoe head was voiced by a no-name voice actor instead of a senior citizen few people under 30 had heard of. And no way they would have returned for Toy Story without the secure feeling of knowing that Annie Potts was doing Bo Peep.

I was, because even within voice acting there are a, b and c listers. It's hard not to recognise Tara Strong or Vic Magnotta from role to role. But also I'm autistic and speech patterns are easy for me to recognise.
I've been recognizing characters as other characters since I was little. I still do it (recognizing from things from my childhood, or just shows I'm currently a fan of) since it's just. Recognizing a voice. Like when you hear your friend or family members voice in a crowd....? I do this for voice actors I don't recognize btw. When I watch South Park I'm able to tell whether a character is voiced by Trey Parker or Matt Stone even though they make voices and use filters sometimes.
frr. real voice actors literally embodies the character. the shock i had finding out different characters were voiced by one person is part of the magic
training and practice goes into voice acting. not a lot of people get that through their head because they think you're just talking into a mic. actors, and voice actors are separate jobs with separate requirements and challenges. as such an actor should train for a voice acting role. and a voice actor should train for an acting role.
I have NEVER met a kid that was excited to watch ANY animated movie just because a famous person was the voice. Not saying it doesn't happen but I'm sure it's a very very very low number.

Its literally so annoying seeing people who does NOT have any talent when it comes to voice acting because of the celebrity. It’s unfair for the people to actually deserve it and have the talent…. Edit: Guys I think you guys think im just talking abt Awkwafina even she is a great example of this im not just talking about her I’m talk about other celebrities too. Also when I mean not talented I mean that they don’t have the talent as an actual Voice actor who can give different tones and emotions. Usually the celebs give the same delivery and little emotion unlike a talented voice actor who trained and practiced for this.
Awkwafina is def talented as a voice actor, but she’s getting typecast and pigeonholed into one type of role, when she CAN play many more. Chris Pratt however, js plays and sounds exactly like himself in every single thing he’s in.
Talent does NOT exist. DEDOCATION, PATIENCE and PRACTICE IS. Unfortunately not everyone become famous by proving themselves or stays the same after they got fame.

It's us poor hard working people's time to shine. Anyway I'm looking for voice actors for my future projects. I look forward to your response.
@hlavco the difference is I have variety! The name is for laughs and the fact I'm autistic and tend to be awkward. But I can at least play different characters types
I couldn't stomach her even if she wasn't overexposed... so obnoxious!!!! and I'm someone who likes cute and quirky characters, but the way she makes her voices deeper and raspier on purpose just to scream just isn't it!!!!
For Banderas and Puss in Boots, I might have agreed with his first movie. But I think he's really grown as a voice actor along with the role. In Last Wish he was terrific. He had all the emotions down pat; confidence, apathy, raw panic, sadness, goofiness. I can't really imagine anyone else in that role now.
He's wonderful! and as a Spaniard myself im really happy they cast him and not someone pretending to be Spanish, just gives us more rep and I love it. He's my hero
It is also amazing that he voices like 5 different languages and dubs: Latin american esp, castilian esp, catalan, italian and english. Dude is amazing
Banderas was chosen because the Shrek 2 creators wanted Puss to sound like Zorro, then thought it would be funny if they got the actual Zorro actor to play him, and then they were surprised when Banderas said yes. It's probably the one celebrity voice actor that is actually warranted.
@@DeadFishFactoryiirc Antonio Banderas was a bit self-conscious about having such a strong accent in english language films at the time, so he was delighted that the directors wanted him to keep it.
Watching those disney movies as a kid, I had no idea who any of those people were. And the ones I'd heard of, I had no idea it was them doing the voicing.
You know, the worst part? This has spread to the dubbing industry in other countries. Having unqualified people doing voice work, like... a TV HOST voicing Flynn Rider alongside professionals. If you want someone Worse than Awkwafina, please check the Brazilian Dub for Tangled, the TV HOST they brought to voice Flynn Rider didn't even bother to listen to the director, he just went in, recorded and left, not acting anything, not even TRYING. Star Talent, or Celebrity Voices can be good, if the celebrity bothers to listen to the directors. Voice acting is an art and it's part of the animation.
the latin american spanish dub of Tangled is horrible too, Flynn Rider's VA is a singer who can't act and Rapunzel is played by a child actress/singer (I think she was like 15 at the time) who honestly at the time was not particularly good at either of those things. It's not really as bad as other casting choices from other movies but I completely understand what you mean, this has been happening way too much in the last decade. Imo the best star talents are always the ones who are actual actors even if they don't specialize in VA, it makes sense to have them do those jobs since they at least can act, but it's so jarring how they keep giving roles to people who have nothing to do with acting and have never acted in their lives. They've had RUclipsrs do the voices in several movies like Sonic or Abominable and that just added to the reasons why I didn't watch those movies.
Can I say anime too?? Like I don't know why it just sounds so fake/unnatural to me whenever I hear a dubbed anime. I don't hate it but I'm never immersed.
To be fair to 90’s Disney they may have picked celebrities to voice act but they had some great performances. James Woods is a great example as you pointed out. But I completely agree with how it is today. There are to many celebrities where they don’t really need to be.
Before frozen and tangled came out, i can honestly say i never had an issue with any animated movie. Even with celebrity PACKED TO THE BRIM movies like Ice Age. But the animation has become non distinct, the actors are recycled and the storyline is repetitive. There is no more creativity like Camelot, happy feet, or robots. And movies used to be dark! Hercules, lion king, Pocahontas, hunchback of notre dame. They used to give you chills as a kid, i have not seen a single movei like that these days. The last thing to even emotionally move me was wreck it ralph.
That's cause in the 90s they hired actual actors and not, like, comedians or wrestlers or whatever. Actors had transferrable skills they could use. The rock doesn't.
@TZ2nd Even the direct-to-DVD animated movies in the 2000s were gems. Cinderella III: A Twist In Time is a masterpiece leagues better than the poorly written crap that is Frozen.
I agree with this fully and the part where you talked about recognizing voices got me thinking. It reminds me of how the anime industry used to always use the same people, it’s less common now but man back in the day it was Bryce papenbrook, Monica rials, Vic micnogna, and a bunch of others in like every other dub 😂😂
Imagine spending your time stuyding acting, impressions, expressing emotions and training your voice. Just for someone with way less experience in your field get choosen over you.
Or like imagine getting a masters degree in music, excelling at singing at every single instrument on earth only to end up working in Taco Bell and watching people like Billy 😷 illish get all the success This is the way
Imagine working to become the best at a sport from childhood. Sacrificing all those fun social activities and life events to finally make it to the ultimate moment of competition. Then having your heart ripped out when you realize you can only ever hope to come second at best because someone who identified as your gender five minutes ago steps in and easily defeats you.
I liked how we had big name actors in animations, video games and now regular TV shows. I thought "good for them, they're raising the bar in this field and putting some serious budget to cast and effects" But this video, and your point above make me consider the effect this is having on those industries, which are already becoming repetitive and stale and carbon copies of each other for other reasons, and this is perhaps adding to that
How though? Animations are easier to make, take less time, and there is anime/cartoons like every streaming app/tv now. Seems like they getting bigger by the second. There is anime on AMC for god's sake. The video is just a whiner that wants something to be elusive to a certain group of people.
That's the problem. No one is gonna watch an animated movie if they don't know the name of the voice actors. That's why most animated movies would have a celebrity actor playing a character. That's why Hoodwinked had celebrity voice actors and not professional voice actors.
@@CartoonsEveryone Fun Fact: in the Popeye movie that got canceled, Tom Kenny and Grey DeLisle are used in the trailer. However it was confirmed that Jim Carry and Amy Adams would have been used in the final film.

Well I don't like the term "industry plant" but I think she has a lot of connections to be cast to literally everything. She appeared out of nowhere and now she is everywhere. No hate though, there are a lot of actors/singers/entertainers appeared out of thin blue and suddenly in everything while not being very talented. It is sad for real talented people waiting for an opportunity:(
@d4545 Don't worry I'll share your load of the hate. She's a god awful actress and ruined the Crazy Rich Asians film adaptation and I will forever hold a grudge for that reason.
Robert Pattison's voice acting in The Boy and the Heron is an example of a great voicing acting from an actor who isn't a professional voice actor. You wouldn't know it's him
You can tell his put his heart and soul into that performance and wasn’t just doing it for a paycheck, I think that’s a big difference with him and a lot of celebrity VAs
I was floored when the credits rolled by. I had to look it up as we walked out of the theater because I was like what?? He did an amazing job, best thing in the movie IMO
To be fair that happens consistently with Ghibli casts. The wind rises had Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Martin Short & Stanley Tucci. Marnie was hailee steinfeld. And Poppy Hill had Jamie lee Curtis and Anton Yelchin. And I'm just now finding out after dozens of watches.
Mark Hammil also does amazingly in fantasy shows like 'The Dark Crystal'. I wouldn't know the scientist skeksis was voiced by him if it weren't for credits
@@RosyStarAJI mean, he uses the exact same voice for every voice acting role he’s in so it shouldn’t be that hard to recognise him. Really what you should be surprised about is the fact that Simon Pegg voiced The Chamberlain. Seriously I did not know that it was him until I saw his name in the credits
They've slowly begun to replace proper voice actors with celebrities in games, too. Which is a shame, since finally games are at the level of immersiveness and storytelling-level I've been dreaming of since childhood, and now immersion will be hindered by a phoned-in performance of an a-list actor not suited for voice acting. And sometimes not even an actor, but an influencer or a streamer. Just so the marketing team will have their schtick.
As a professional hater of Cyberpunk 2077 this is yet another reason I think CDPR should be hauled in front of a tribunal for making that game. The whole “LOOK, GUYS! MEMORABLE AND POPULAR CELEBRITY ACTOR! ISN’T HE SO CHARISMATIC AND FAMOUS? BUY OUR GAME!” thing was such an annoying marketing strategy and I hate that it’s getting more popular. I do not want to look at a video game character and see a real famous person grafted onto their body, it is weird and dumb
We need more comedy actors in serious roles and serious actors in comedy roles to prevent this annoying Hollywood stereotrype, keep things fresh for once damn it
Bryan Cranston is the best example of that, people were skeptical of him because he had only done comedy before Breaking Bad, now Walter White is one of the most iconic characters in media of all time.
Excellent Points made about Celebrity voice acting! However the degree of concentration on Aquafina feels and sounds like a personal attack TBH. As true as it may be
I agree so much with this!! She was getting me out of the narrative constantly, her voice doesn't match the character at all and distracts from the story..I also don't like that they decided to base the design of dragons on my little pony characters.I literally looked up Raya dragons next to my little pony and they look the same... I feel like they could've really done more justice on dragons design, that was another huge element that made the movie less enjoyable for me, and I think that if they didn't make those design and voice acting choices the movie would've been amazing
I was talking to my friend about Raya and Awkwafina's involvement and she said she removed that movie from her memory completely. We agreed that Raya had the potential to be the next Mulan. With duty, family, fighting and maturing. Imagine a Mushu-like dragon (design wise) with complex feelings of being not enough but trying their best for Raya... Maybe that dragon would be a little childish but that's because they're the youngest sibling, not because the voice actress can't do serious characters and they would have an impostor syndrome for sure. Raya would learn about the joy of life beyond duty and the dragon would learn that you can pick up the difficult tasks you're presented with, that you're enough and you're stronger than you think. Both maturing in their own way
@@arichu2514 I highly doubt she was based on mlp, as she looks nothing like G4 ponies. Yes, she's pretty similar the G5 version of ponies, but that movie was released only few months after Raya, so I really doubt anyone could base her look off it
The Prince of Egypt is one of my favorite animated films and the only actor I recognized was Danny Glover. i never knew that all those celebs voiced the other characters.
And this is the reason why indie animation is getting the spotlight now cause 1, its more entertaining to watch 2, actual heart and soul is put into it And 3, they don't use famous people and exploit them.they actually use people who are talented and enjoy their work in voice acting
Even shows like Hazbin hotel did celebrity voice acting right. Keith David, Alex Brightman and Stephanie Beatriz were the right choices for their characters
in mexico we had an issue with dubbing films where studios started hiring influencers instead of voice actors and the quality difference was very noticeable
Honestly I wouldn’t care if they did that in my country as currently 3-5 adult males en every dubbed kids series/movies are voiced by the same man. And most entertainment companies seem to only have like 10 voice actors each so we get a lot of bad matches and acting.
I feel like they tried to do the big name thing with Robert Pattinson in The Boy in the Heron, but then he surprised everyone with how good he was as a voice actor and now I want him in more stuff since he has Mark Hamil versatility
To be fair, Ghibli has been using celebrities in their english dubs for a very long time. Look up almost any Ghibli film's english cast and you'll find celebrities in their roster: Kiki's Delivery Service (Kirsten Dunst plays Kiki), Howl's Moving Castle (Christian Bale plays Howl, Josh Hutcherson plays Markl), Princess Mononoke (Claire Danes plays San), etc. But yeah you're right, Robert Pattinson bodied that role.
jk Simmons, Mark Hamill, great. im partial to Chris pine as well for some reason (I ignore wish on principle). but overall I rant quite often about my longing for the return of voice acting in movies as a profession. literally ask anyone I know. I complain about it a lot.
It's not just Awkwafina that needs to improve or get less voice acting roles, im tired of movie studios picking out random A list celebrities to voice characters rather than voice actors that actually fit the characters perfectly. This isn't always a problem though, I'm just tired of movie adapted cartoon and video game characters getting voice actors who sound nothing like their original counter parts.
Not that I don't think an actor who wants to genuinely try voice acting can't do well, but another issue is these guys are sometimes hired specifically to BE themselves. The studios are not looking for a creative performance, they want you to be very aware who the actor is and have them play themselves.
Man I don't mind it if the celebrity does a good job, like Eartha Kitt in Emperor's New Groove was extraordinary, her voice acting performance might be my favorite thing about the movie
“Pushing her own personality to onto the character, instead of letting the character’s personality direct her performance” that’s probably the best way to sum up how I feel about her roles

Robin Williams complained about this years ago and essentially said just because you're an actor doesn't mean you can be a voice actor.
@@SalinaMoonfall I see what you mean.
The problem with being a voice actor is that you just have to be able to voice so many things to just scrape by.
i think one of the issues is that a lot of animated flims aren't making characters to be voiced, they're making blank slates that can match actors.
Everyone is replaceable
not sure if that is the intent, but it is how things end up. also that isn't just animated films. look at how awkwafina ruined shang-chi by yet again refusing to act as anything but the most insufferable person ever.

The original voice is so iconic and I really wish they didn't give her the role 😭 scuttle is like the silliest and cutest character in that series so I was so upset watching it when his voice was irritating
They should've asked Shaggy to voice Scuttle for the remake. And I don't mean Shaggy as in from Scooby-Doo. I mean the singer.
They did that? I'm glad i never watch that abomination
And that God awful song oh my lord.
The thing is, most kids won’t even realize or care that famous actors are voicing those roles, so why not just give us good voice acting!!
Hollywood and big executives at big companies are never going admit to that. When is that ever going to change in 2025-2029? Most likely futile.
Because it’s the adults who pay for it. They need to promote it to people who aren’t the primary audience.
(Look at Robin Williams.)
New ones think just yelling random words is funny.
So, what’s so different with Ryan and the rock?
Agreed. I can't tell if she's typecasting herself or the studios are typecasting her. Either way, what she's doing/way she's acting has gotten way, way too old. We either need her to do something fresh and new or GET someone fresh and new
She isnt the one securing these roles though, its her team that always sends her to do those roles
It’s all the painfully unfunny, “well, that just happened” type of humor where the character says 100 silly things per minute and none of it lands. It’s bad now and it’s going to age even worse. Nothing with her in it is going to be considered classic.
jack black is the only one i absolutely never will mind voicing a character

1. Most of them are just not voice actors, they don't know what the hell they're doing
And 2.

@@carontorliak2760 I don't think he'd necessarily have trouble getting work in VO, but I do agree that it's unlikely he'd be getting the top billings he currently does if he hadn't made his name ahead of time. He 100% puts in the work to both maintain and improve his skills, unlike the name actors who put in half effort and collect a major paycheck. Saying Awkwafina has not much range is a bit of a backhanded compliment because that already makes her better than Seth Rogen, who has quite literally no range at all. In Chris Pratt’s case, it’s weird because we HAVE seen him change his style, accents and voices, so we know that he CAN do that BUT it’s more like Hollywood WANTED you to know that the characters are voices by him STRAIGHT UP for marketing reasons.
Everyone who hires Chris Pratt only wants his LEGO Emmet voice and it’s pretty sad.
Don't get me wrong I love Charlie Day and Crisp Rat as actors but they are shit as the Mario Brothers.

robin williams was such an amazing person. seeing the respect he had for voice actors when he voiced genie, plus his respect for art in general, reminded me how much of a rare sight in hollywood and the world at large he was. i really just miss him.

I saw an Intervied with the DC:AU cast once, where they said they had "famous" guest stars who could not Voice-Act at all,
it really is a competely different skillset.

For Banderas and Puss in Boots, I might have agreed with his first movie. But I think he's really grown as a voice actor along with the role. In Last Wish he was terrific. Banderas was chosen because the Shrek 2 creators wanted Puss to sound like Zorro, then thought it would be funny if they got the actual Zorro actor to play him, and then they were surprised when Banderas said yes. It's probably the one celebrity voice actor that is actually warranted.

Same with Robin Williams (obviously Disney didn’t listen, hence why they had some strife for a little bit)
Watching those disney movies as a kid, I had no idea who any of those people were. And the ones I'd heard of, I had no idea it was them doing the voicing.
"the Character wasn't as important as the person who Voiced (or acted) them." This is so friggin true.
Luciano Huck 🤮
I learned about those too.
And they're a pain in the neck.
Or popular youtubers that get hired for voice acting roles, there are only very few youtubers that can pull it off well.
One can even extrapolate that to the level of talent celebs have now compared to the past but that should be covered separately
Gosh I ADORE him as Hades 💙
Or like imagine getting a masters degree in music, excelling at singing at every single instrument on earth only to end up working in Taco Bell and watching people like Billy 😷 illish get all the success
This is the way
Most purely voice actors are pretty trash though. I say that as a watcher of anime dubs.
@@janegoodall1837 People overreact with dubbed anime. It's really not that bad lmaoo, some animes I prefer the dubbed version honestly.

Then having your heart ripped out when you realize you can only ever hope to come second at best because someone who identified as your gender five minutes ago steps in and easily defeats you.
I was thinking this too. We need to stop just putting celebrities as voices. It’s making the industry way too small and limited
I liked how we had big name actors in animations, video games and now regular TV shows. I thought "good for them, they're raising the bar in this field and putting some serious budget to cast and effects"
But this video, and your point above make me consider the effect this is having on those industries, which are already becoming repetitive and stale and carbon copies of each other for other reasons, and this is perhaps adding to that
How though? Animations are easier to make, take less time, and there is anime/cartoons like every streaming app/tv now. Seems like they getting bigger by the second. There is anime on AMC for god's sake. The video is just a whiner that wants something to be elusive to a certain group of people.
I’m just tired of celebrities voice acting overall. Hire professionals and give them a chance to shine.
That's the problem. No one is gonna watch an animated movie if they don't know the name of the voice actors. That's why most animated movies would have a celebrity actor playing a character. That's why Hoodwinked had celebrity voice actors and not professional voice actors.

Yes, she's pretty similar the G5 version of ponies, but that movie was released only few months after Raya, so I really doubt anyone could base her look off it
Also if they get rid of the message of trusting people even if they backstab you TWO TIMES
I watched it in Spanish with subtitles
The Prince of Egypt is one of my favorite animated films and the only actor I recognized was Danny Glover. i never knew that all those celebs voiced the other characters.
Danny Glover is in that movie???
@@lunabearsong2043 Yes! He voiced Jethro, Tzipporah's father
@@BeeGeeTee and he *absolutely* was getting to old for that shit.
I recognised a bunch of actors in that film and had no idea Danny Glover voiced Tzipporah's father. Now im wondering how I DIDN'T realize.
@@LayneBenofsky Eh. he was only 52 in 1998. Seems more than an appropriate age for the role.
Omg so happy im not alone on this
awkwafina's voice looks like an aunt that smokes way too much cigarrets per day
I saw someone like that get arrested, and her voice was the funniest shit ever. I could've listened to her talk for months on loop.
And for some reason, I really like that quality😅
Than you do voice acting so we can say the same about you
Seeing voices is in another level

And this is the reason why indie animation is getting the spotlight now cause
1, its more entertaining to watch
2, actual heart and soul is put into it
And 3, they don't use famous people and exploit them.they actually use people who are talented and enjoy their work in voice acting
Even shows like Hazbin hotel did celebrity voice acting right. Keith David, Alex Brightman and Stephanie Beatriz were the right choices for their characters
It's true. Those right there are three of the many, many reasons Hazbin Hotel and The Amazing Digital Circus have become so popular.
fr
well, to me the 1st reason just boils down to taste. some people just find major animation more entertaining
@@aggi1850 Even though major animation is tropey and predictable?
in mexico we had an issue with dubbing films where studios started hiring influencers instead of voice actors and the quality difference was very noticeable
That sounds really cursed. oof
@@32-bitcloudlmaoooo…yeah it does I fear
Honestly I wouldn’t care if they did that in my country as currently 3-5 adult males en every dubbed kids series/movies are voiced by the same man. And most entertainment companies seem to only have like 10 voice actors each so we get a lot of bad matches and acting.
Wait whattttt? I didn’t know they were being replaced by celebrities I tought they were just getting lazier
Omg that sounds fully horrible I can’t imagine how many projects there voices ruined
Im tired of seeing christ pratt in EVEY SINGLE ANIMATED FILM. Like bro there are other ppl that exist
Ironically, as soon as I see Awkwafina or Chris Pratt as part of the cast for an animated movie, I'm immediately turned off from watching the movie.
Same. Add James Cordon to the list and I'm immediately disinterested
Not gonna lie, Chris was pretty good in Lego Movie.
Same.
at least chris pratt doesn't play annoying characters

I feel like they tried to do the big name thing with Robert Pattinson in The Boy in the Heron, but then he surprised everyone with how good he was as a voice actor and now I want him in more stuff since he has Mark Hamil versatility
I forgot he was was the Heron!? I didnt even recognize him.
The English dubs of Studio Ghibli movies always have surprising and great performances from famous actors. Princess Mononoke was so good
Honestly Robert Pattinson has been amazing as an actor since leaving Twilight
Wait... You guys don't watch ghibli films in their original Japanese voice acting with subs?
To be fair, Ghibli has been using celebrities in their english dubs for a very long time. Look up almost any Ghibli film's english cast and you'll find celebrities in their roster: Kiki's Delivery Service (Kirsten Dunst plays Kiki), Howl's Moving Castle (Christian Bale plays Howl, Josh Hutcherson plays Markl), Princess Mononoke (Claire Danes plays San), etc. But yeah you're right, Robert Pattinson bodied that role.
I would also add JK Simmons the the list of excellent voice actors who are also face actors
Yeah, I’d agree.
He's stellar even as a disembodied voice. His performance as Cave Johnson was a highlight of Portal 2 for me.
@@pluv1eWhen life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade
jk Simmons, Mark Hamill, great. im partial to Chris pine as well for some reason (I ignore wish on principle). but overall I rant quite often about my longing for the return of voice acting in movies as a profession. literally ask anyone I know. I complain about it a lot.
He's also the best antagonist in BG3.
One thing i do like though, is that the cars movie casted actual race car drivers to voice themselves in cars, i thought that was pretty cool
read this as "actual race cars"
It's not just Awkwafina that needs to improve or get less voice acting roles, im tired of movie studios picking out random A list celebrities to voice characters rather than voice actors that actually fit the characters perfectly. This isn't always a problem though, I'm just tired of movie adapted cartoon and video game characters getting voice actors who sound nothing like their original counter parts.
I kinda felt that Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, Chris Pratt and they all share one origin that made them famous.
The least they could do is help the actors actually be the characters.
Not that I don't think an actor who wants to genuinely try voice acting can't do well, but another issue is these guys are sometimes hired specifically to BE themselves. The studios are not looking for a creative performance, they want you to be very aware who the actor is and have them play themselves.
True. Sometimes it works, like Maui or the Genie. Often it fails.
Man I don't mind it if the celebrity does a good job, like Eartha Kitt in Emperor's New Groove was extraordinary, her voice acting performance might be my favorite thing about the movie
she's one of the like less than 10 voiced by celebrities characters that was done well
She also voiced Queen Vexus in Teenage Robot.
She passed away a month after The Emperor's New School had officially ended.
@@ChristianFrates1997 Oh, hey, Christian! Yes, Eartha was such an admirable talent with both her acting and singing. "Snuff Out the Light", anyone?
She played both Bagheera from the jungle book: Mowgli’s story and CatWoman from Batman.
Never realized how bad the cast of angry birds too is
It’s even worse when they do have legitimate actors doing voices, they do nothing with their characters.
eh, i mean i watched the movie all the time as a kid and i never had any problem with the voices
Boy you did not just spell the number as “too” 😭
angry birds has shitty actors, but the movie itself is really good tbh.
