  • Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White has sparked major backlash-and it’s not just because of Rachel Zegler’s controversial comments. In this video, I dive deep into why this remake is causing such an uproar, especially when other reimagined classics like Maleficent were widely accepted despite significant changes.
We'll explore Disney’s long history of storytelling, from the original Snow White to the Renaissance era, and how the company’s recent focus on ideology over narrative has left fans disappointed. I also compare the new Snow White to other adaptations like Mirror Mirror and Once Upon a Time, which managed to put a fresh spin on the classic tale while staying true to its essence.
Join me as I break down what Disney got right in past live-actions and why this latest remake is missing the mark. If you’re passionate about storytelling, classic tales, or just want to understand the controversy surrounding Disney’s latest choices, this video is for you.

Are you sure? Because even before the culture wars i though that movie made maleficent waaaaay to victimize and the bad guy waaayy too cartonisly evil (even down with having a shitty british acent) that feels more pandering than today standards.
Just like in the joker movie they made the joker into an incel and the rich people into Michael moore characters.

Maleficent didn't change Aurora's story, the film switched perspectives to give us Maleficent's story to explain her motivations- we hadn't seen this before so it was well received because it was brand new. The live actions aren't supposed to reinvent the wheel - they were supposed to tell us the same story in a new way. Snow White is changing the story and giving the titular character new motivations we don't care to see. Disney is changing the story for no other reason than to cram unpopular ideology down our throats and we reject it

To this day, the Maleficent films and Cinderella (2015) are my personal favorite live-action Disney films. I love the Maleficent films for not just flat out remaking Sleeping Beauty, but providing a new perspective on the villain's side and explained how she was. Cinderella was great because it understood the source material and changed just enough aspects of the story so that it wasn't a carbon copy of the 1950 original animated film, but kept the heart of the story so that we still recognized it as the same fairy tale we grew to love.

Yep exactly, & you can only imagine what would have happened if the situation was the opposite: with a non-white character all the hell breaks loose, but never vice versa, if one doesn't want to be called bad names in this current "woke society" has to shut up...ah the hypocrisy!🙄
However, all in all I agree with the video, but sort of politely disagree about Zegler, her real life personality is ruining many of the characters she supposedly enjoy to portray on screen, particularly this 1.
Also Halle Bailey had to face harsh criticism, even if it wasn't clearly her fault about TLM live action, but handled it with much more grace & dignity.💜👏
Of course after all the backlash, Disney forced Zegler to do some different kind of interviews, but she remains the same & is working to actively crash the Disney brand it seems...I mean, now - after all that pr stuff! - she should perfectly know what to expect, but regardless, even after seeing how bad this 1st SnowWhite trailer has been received, chosed to ignore it to celebrate its supposed great success & to link DIRECTLY to this comment another very political & divisive 1, even having on board an Israeli actress like co-star Gal Gadot, that left me speechless.
It's totally unprofessional, never apologizing as well, & lest we forget, Gina Carano was fired for way less, double standards much?!🤦

THIS IS A TRAVESTY" and he's just like "...okay honey. I love you!" 😂
And beyond just the costuming, you're 100% right: people LOVE and have always loved the Disney princesses for their inspirational, above-average virtuousness, kindness, patience, maturity, sweetness, and gentleness. The live action Cinderella and Maleficent are generally beloved because they maintained those traits in the princess. The live action Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Aladdin, and now Snow White are generally laughed at and disliked because they took away _those specific characteristics,_ because being endlessly patient, kind, feminine, and HUMBLE is not "Progressive Girlboss" enough.

They still refused _7_ dwarf actors jobs, and they _still_ turned a gentle, kind, humble, hardworking, feminine princess into a "Loud and Proud Progressive Girlboss". We could have seen that JUST from the trailer, where she's singing for the _dwarves_ to work while she does nothing. Zegler only spoiled how bad it was going to be a few months early. The sad thing is there are dozens of fairy tales from diverse places that should naturally feature a diverse cast. But, not only did Disney not care to try for one of those, like Pixar's more recent successes, they also don't care to showcase actual diversity. see, e.g., the cgi dwarves.

The big reason is respecting the source material, the live action maleficent (sleeping beauty) and Cinderella worked bc they respected the source and wanted to re make it to appeal to modern day audiences while also showing respect and appreciation for the original which is what a remake should do, all tho remakes are usually quick lazy cash grabs the ones that do it with respect and appreciation for the OG always perform well with audiences, show white bashed the original and had no respect for the original and had this mindset that there version was “better”, the other too movies didn’t have this superiority complex about itself and respected the original while trying to make it more up to date with Modern audiences, show white just went around calling the og bad and stupid and that there’s was WAYY better (news flash it wasn’t) the first too show that remakes don’t have to just be lazy cash grabs trying to appeal to modern day audiences and can honour the original while creating a version fans of the original and modern day audiences can enjoy and that’s why it worked

The curse broke because maleficent grew attachment and love to aurora that's what freed her from the curse, you don't need a prince charming guy's kiss and call it true love.

What I liked about Maleficent is that it didn’t claim to be a prequel or a remake. It was instead a reimagining of the story. A different adaptation of the story that existed for years. Sure it had some nods to the specific animated disney version but it was very clear that the story did not take place in the same timeline as sleeping beauty nor was it trying to tell that same story. It was it's own thing and different. And in my opinion, well done. Sure you may say it's 'the bad guy is the good guy' story but I think it did it well. And I liked the mother/daughter connection Maleficent had with Aurora which helped to heal her. It had passion, a new story to tell that made it worth being made, and was not just a cash grab.

The first Snow White worked because she demonstrated an inner beauty we could all aspire to. You know she would give her all to help someone in need just because she felt it was the right thing to do, contrasted with the selfish, vain, evil Queen. The second Snow White is the kind of person you could see easily stabbing you in the back in order to ensure she got what she thought what she deserved.
In other words, there is very little discernible difference between the new Snow White and the Queen, except the Queen is hot and Snow looks like one of those man-haters you are afraid to even look at because she'll start shrieking about something or other she doesn't like about you.

I feel like “Maleficent” worked because the purpose of the movie was to answer the question “why did she do it?” it gives us a dive into Maleficent as a character, to help us understand her motivations. When they reached the point where they HAD to change the story to fit their narrative, they did it in interesting ways, that kept us guessing and wanting to know more about to these characters and lives. I cannot find a single purpose or interest for the new Snow White. They want her character to be renovated into this new powerhouse of what really feels like propaganda. But if you have to completely gut the character to accomplish that, then you’ve completely ruined the character, and the story in the process.

  • @osmanyousif7849
    @osmanyousif7849 24 дня назад +2

    Was Maleficent (2014) perfect?
    No.
The movie deviated a lot from the original 1959 animated film, in regards to its plot. And I’m personally mixed about how well the creators succeeded at doing so. But just like many others here, I actually think Aurora in this remake/retelling (in terms of her disposition), was well done. But that’s mostly due to Elle Fanning‘s performance. Her portrayal of Aurora is far more in line with the character in the 1959 animated movie, really tapping into the more playful and carefree demeanor of Aurora, who dreams of finding more outside of her world with her “three aunts” at the cottage. For 16 years, you could see how she’s really trying to make human interactions, despite feeling almost impossible. Even when she first meets Philip, who is the most normal human being to her, it’s really hard for her to connect, since most of her friends are animals or mythical beings. Despite the many changes to the plot of the original as well as several changes to characters that I feel like just didn’t work, it’s quite surprising to see how faithful and on-point the portrayal of Aurora was. It’s just a real shame that this portrayal had to be in a pretty mediocre retelling of the original story.
But regardless, this is something that I think really needs to be addressed more when doing any type of adaptation, continuation, or retelling of an established IP. I can’t tell you much media I have read, watched, or played, where the creators behind it, takes so much from the original source material, but don’t seem to understand why certain elements were established to begin with, ESPECIALLY IN REGARDS TO CHARACTER. Character is story. Even in fairytales, while the plot is driven by some magical conflict or evil power trying to take over entire kingdom. The story is about the main character’s journey and how will they reach their dreams or wants. Therefore, by shifting the characterization found in the original source, you literally suck out the entire story. You CANNOT change character, yet keep the same events of the plot, and expect the story to remain coherent.
And that’s the problem with a lot of these Disney live action adaptations.

The only thing I particularly don't like about Maleficent is the 3 fairies. Their ages are backwards, the green one (classic cartoon named her fauna) should be the oldest and calmest and blue one (named Merryweather in classic) should be the youngest.
But the story is very good, loves it!!
Also, we should add Snow White and the Huntsman into the topic too. It is very well made, with lots of new twists and it also foretells the story behind Ravenna the Evil Queen motives.

I don’t think the “they were white in the original” matters. For Snow White specifically, It can still be a very light skinned actress of any ethnicity and it still sort of makes sense if you think of the name as a metaphor. As a light skinned Latina family and friends always remind me that I’m light skinned , and that’s fine. That’s just stating facts. It could be the same with her. “Snow White” not in a literal sense but in a metaphorical one. Race doesn’t REALLY have to play a part in why it won’t work.
The problem really relies in the utter disregard and disrespect that Disney has for its audience and it’s stories. There isn’t any nuanced to the storytelling or apparently anything salvageable that appears to improve, not in the filmmaking, or the story or the casting.
They want to make her have a new race/ethnicity, good, fine, as long as she can play the part and treats the character she is playing with respect. You want to hate on the story and character you are portraying, then go play something else and stop bothering the people that love them as they are.

Disney needs to examine the story in that way. She also desperately wants to be loved. That’s why she clings to the animals. So of course she would fall in love with a prince. She needs help. This is not a girl boss story.

Let’s be honest here…. Thousands of little girls are going to want to watch this movie and parents will take them. Because little kids don’t often care about politics. Yes we all find her very ungrateful and annoying but I don’t see it taking a hit.

I love the Villain origins story. It gives their reasons depth and an understanding.I feel like Once Upon A Time did a great job.
No one is really born evil…

Poor girl, the poor parenting and her personality had no idea of the magnitude of this destruction.

As an aspirational writer and easily bothered person, I hated the original Snow-White because of her total lack of common sense: seriously, who would open to a stranger wandering in woods? Also, the queen's plan makes no sense (becoming hideous to be the fairest of them all) and the prince is just a guy coming out of nowhere. I made four changes in the story and I thinks the result is pretty good.
Number 1: when the queen offers her the poisoned apple, Snow-White (who already survived four murder attempts) guess there's something wrong and she exchanges the apple with another. The queen dies while Snow-White falls into a coma because she touched the poison.
Number 2: the queen doesn't really hate Snow-White but her power-hungry father doesn't want anyone to threaten his power so he mistreats his daughter and forces her to kill Snow-White.
Number 3: the prince is actually the son of a witch living in the woods who helps the first queen giving birth to Snow-White. Thanks to the witch's servants, Snow-White found the dwarves' home and survived the queen's attempts to kill her.
Number 4: Snow-White is actually as white as snow because she has albinism. Therefore, nobody wants her to sit on the throne, not even her own father, so she will have to rely mostly on herself to survive and finally get the power.

There's a way to tell a feminist retelling of Snow White without sacrificing the essence of the story! Just focus more on the relationship between Snow and her Stepmother, the Prince could be a major subplot!

Wasn't the prince always a subplot? It was never the main focus from what I remember. It was a plot point to show how snow white's caring and loving nature, not only saved her but also helped her to have a pleasant life

@@user-zn6vi7yn3r Hell even in the Book the prince was not even a subplot, he just appeared at the end, passing by. He just exists so she could have her typical princess gets her prince ending. He was more of a price, a trophy for her kindness than anything else.

❤ Gal Gadot look gorgeous! Disney should also include diversity in 'Mulan' and negotiate with Rachel Zegler! ❤

Maleficent also gave us an entirely new story. We followed the "villian" and not the princess. Made everyone way more complex.
Cruella, in my opinion, did the same, and it was wonderful too.
The only things that really saved beauty and the beast was emma watson, and the new songs.
The others just- theyre bland, uninspired, and full unnecessary changes. Theyre hard to watch.

The biggest issue is that Disney put this beloved story in the hands of people who hate the original, and believe they can do better. By changing everything they can possibly get away with while still making a buck. The writers, the directors, down to the actress - they hate it.
Maleficent was a respectful reimagining of the original. Aurora's character was faithful to the original cartoon, and if anything, it went to show how truly good and lovable she was. Cinderella was the same. Her story was expanded upon, but her character was respected and left unchanged. Beauty and the Beast and Aladin were a little more iffy, but they were still faithful adaptations.
The Little Mermaid was a failure via trying to push too hard into feminism and not needing any man, even though Eric was literally returning the favor since she'd saved his life... but it wasn't that bad, and I can't blame someone too much for enjoying it.
Joking about cutting all Florian's scenes when that's what an audience would like expanded on the most, calling him a stalker, having Snow White order the ones saving her and giving her food and shelter to clean their house for her... this is a catastrophe.

It's so funny because disney many examples of successfully adopting an animated feature to live action with little to no changes. Beauty and the beast(2017) is one of them. Why could they adopt this original as well?

Snow White fail, but Maleficent still does not work. Maleficent is simply a better movie, but still deliberately damages the original's intention thanks to its closing statement by Aurora claiming that it is the "correct" version of Sleeping Beauty. a very nice way to pay homage to Walt Disney's original vision right? but this in an unpopular opinion, especially here 😂

At least Snow White is following the general premise of the movie it’s based on albeit in a horrible way
Maleficent tried to make it look like one of Disney’s most recognizable villains ever was the victim

Aside from Disney a lot of studios are trying to re write history like in the Bridgertons they don't focus on the period but trying to make it an alternate reality.

The new SW makes a point that a princess shouldn't need saving by a prince. Well, actually, whats so wrong with that? I think its great!
