Today is Jan 24, 2024. Yesterday sadly marked 46 years since Terry Kath died. The band was not the same after that. This timeless 1970 classic now brings tears to my eyes. It was their first big hit reaching the top 10. The city of Chicago was very blessed to have this band no matter how much mayor Daley despised them.

I've never considered them to be from Chicago for two reasons: they relocated to California and the melodies and horns are so warm and brilliant, we always took them to the beach.
They really weren't the same without Terry. Peter helped them tread water for a while and then he left and I really don't think there is much left of the original band.
50 years later, I still can’t believe the courage behind Kath’s vocals… he was all in / make or break, and he didn’t hesitate… probably the best vocal performance in rock, because he was right on the edge, and didn’t back down…

I was just a little kid in 1970, but I lived in Chicago during this wonderful music time. My parents were both musicians. when they were young. My neighbor used to practice with the window open upstairs and the music would flow down to the street. What a fabulous time to grow up. We all knew we were lucky as well as Blessed.

I saw the original band three times too. Twice at the Boston Garden. One of those so lucky to be in the fifth row on the floor after meeting a woman and her family at Hampton Beach, NH and told her I loved Chicago and was going to get tickets for their upcoming concert at the Garden and she said she knew someone at the Garden and could get me tickets right up close to the stage. I didn’t believe her but gave her my phone number. Sure enough she came through. Unbelievable to be that close to the stage. Those two concerts were 1973 and 1974. Then I saw Chicago again at Schaefer Stadium (old Patriots stadium) in Foxboro, MA when they toured with The Beach Boys in 1975 plus Fleetwood Mac and a few other bands. Unbelievable concerts.

I am 58, growing up all my life I heard this song thousands of times before Cell phones and internet. Now getting to see this video, no wonder Hendrix said if you want to see the greatest guitarist, go see Kath. What a great time to live and now my appreciation for this song is multiple fold. Loughnane did not have a very good night. . Lots of fracking plus several high notes he never attempted. Just left them out. But I get it. Brass players chops can let you down at any time.
I agree. Also, the Boston Bruins died when Bobby Orr retired, the Los Angeles Dodgers ended when Don Drysdale retired, boxing ended when Ali retired, the NFL no longer exists since Satin made Marcus Allen retire, no film is worth a free large popcorn to sit a moment through since Paul Newman died, and if there is one good reason that any television in America is on after 11pm since Carson gave up his hosting desk I haven't heard it. And speaking of the New York Yankees and Boston Celtics, where have you gone, Jeremy McGrath? I agree with you, Foster Covers. The Answer: Stay home alone, close it down, and jerk it.
If you saw Chicago after 1977, you didn't really see Chicago because Terry Kath was no longer there. Hendrix said he was the "greatest guitar player in the universe". His guitar playing and vocals were not replaceable.
I have always loved how Kath was in tune with every musician on stage and could improvise then and there, like he does with the drummer in the beginning of that break in the middle.

I remember waiting for the albums to be released and rushing to the record stores to get the vinyl out and play for the first time, over 50 years ago, cherished times and thoughts. Thanks Chicago!
You're so right that there is no equal. And yeah, we waited for the albums, which I recall being around $3 each at the record store.
Best generation of music... The 70s
Kaths voice was so rich and soulful- so underrated!!
Terry Kath, one the most underappreciated guitarists!! Such soul and passion with an unending energy!! You cannot sit down while this song is playing!! Bravo and Well Done Sir!! Rest in Peace brother
And a voice similar to the great Ray Charles .
I am 58, growing up all my life I heard this song thousands of times before Cell phones and internet. Now getting to see this video, no wonder Hendrix said if you want to see the greatest guitarist, go see Kath. What a great time to live and now my appreciation for this song is multiple fold. I could watch this over and over forever! RIP Kath! I am no guitar or music expert, but I believe you may have been the first shredder, if not at least the start of shredding!
So agree!!!!!
Terry Kath should always be mentioned among Rocks greatest guitar players.
His voice is often overlooked, but he always reminded me of Ray Charles!
Me too!
Two Words: GREAT BAND!!! Still listening and enjoying in 2020.
2021!
4/14/21 Ditto.
@@thegarbagegladiators4735 Yoo, Hoo!!
Check out Leonid & Friends from Russia.spot on.
@@charlesbyron9709 Indeed. They are a great tribute band!
I played this song for my 19 year old in the car one day and he loved it. He added it to one of his playlists and later we watched the Rick Beato What makes this Song Great for this song together. I would assume anyone here has watched that video but if not search it out.
Chicago will ALWAYS be one of the best bands to ever grace a stage. Terry Kath will remain THE guitar legend. I loved this song the first time I heard it and I still love it today.
My favorite Chicago song!
And just to let you know,And the vintage, old and classic Chicago Transit Authority called and also known as " Chicago " hit song called Dialogue part 1 and 2 is my most favorite Chicago famous, legendary and known tune,@charlesaracich5377!!!
I never get enough of their first four albums. Unbelievable. Anything more groundbreaking?
I love Terry's voice!
Great to see this video incredible!!!!
There will never be another like Terry Kath, a voice like I never thought possible. Combine him with the superb talent of each musician in Chicago and the result was magic.
After Terry's passing, the band was not the same.
RIP Terry, I'm sure Heavens music is even better with you there. To this very day you are sorly missed. Much love and respect. ✝️
Danny and his superb drumming gave this band that extra kick.
Chicago was his idea
Except he was kicked out because he couldn’t keep time 🤷🏻♂️
Terry Kath maybe one of the most underrated guitar players of all time. He is truly missed. rip terry
Because of my age, I was born in 71, I was first familiar with their 80s stuff. As I got older, I went backwards to their early stuff. Love it! R.i.p. Terry
It's like a whole other world & so much better than the 80s stuff!:))
So true !!! CTA was one of their best!!!!
Same here!
Better before 80s in my book. Got to bubble gum pop sounding for me....
There early stuff with Terry Kath was the best! Then David Foster made them into an incarnation of David Foster. Yuck…
You can't say enough about this band.........Kath is just amazing
That 3 piece horn section is second to none. No sour notes anywhere! Terry had such a soulful voice.
Sorry, but this concert is full of sour notes from the trumpet player. The only flaw in this otherwise terrific concert.
@@mikeymutual5489 It demonstrates how hard playing in a loud band like this is on the lips of the horn players, especially song after song.
How did Peter Cetera dislike the horns in their songs? They made the band.
Loughnane did not have a very good night. . Lots of fracking plus several high notes he never attempted. Just left them out. But I get it. Brass players chops can let you down at any time.
The band to me pretty much ended the day he died. He was the heart n soul of Chicago. All the games we used to play......
Peter Cetera took over and his briches got too big for his head. They partied like rock stars in Colorado! Well they were!
NO other band has had the brass as talented as Chicago!!
EWF
If you saw Chicago after 1977, you didn't really see Chicago because Terry Kath was no longer there. Hendrix said he was the "greatest guitar player in the universe". His guitar playing and vocals were not replaceable.
Terry Kath the total Monster of Rock package. The world misses you
No one played their guitar harder than Terry Kath. He was a monster. Wish I could have seen him
I have always loved how Kath was in tune with every musician on stage and could improvise then and there, like he does with the drummer in the beginning of that break in the middle.
50+ years later, it still sounds awesome as it first did!
Back when music was music! Truly one of the best bands ever.
It’s Really Sad That Terry Kath NEVER Got The Recognition When He Was Alive And Especially After His Unfortunate Passing and IT STILL CONTINUES TO THIS DAY 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Thanks dad for introducing me to Chicago
RIP Terry Kath (January 31, 1946 - January 23, 1978), age 31
You will be remembered as a legend.
Interesting....I share his birthday and he died on cousin's (basically my brother) birthday.
It pisses me off every time I listen to Terry Kath play. He robbed himself and us of years of great music. So much talent wasted in an a careless act.
I only wish there were WAAAAAY more Chicago tracks with Terry on vocals
I think when he passed the band was never the same. Setera changed the sound
I second that thought 🙋♂️
Ditto that SJS!!!
@@nancyjarvis-demuth3236 100% agree with you Nancy Jarvis-Demuth!!
@@hadrianwall9157 I "third" that thought!!
I guess the person who recorded/uploaded this video forgot about the "Make Me Smile" part... 😂
This clip, though, is very good.
Look for the entire concert at Tanglewood. Priceless!
Untouchable
I was the bassist for GFR (Grand Funk Railroad) and we were doing an outdoor festival concert in Oakland. Mark and Terry were backstage after our sets, Terry was into Guns as was Mark. Mark traveled with his because back in the days there were NO security checks, about a week after we got back from the Oakland gig I was awakened by our then tour manager, Ray Lewis, he asked If I’d been watching TV? “hell no, I’m trying to SLEEP! “ I yelled at him! WHY? “Something happened To Kath! I think a gun accident and he’s DEAD! I remember sitting on the edge of the bed! TOTAL DISBELIEF!
Terry absolutely attacks that guitar and his intense vocals….simple magnificent
My whole life I never gave Chicago much thought. Then I saw a video of them doing Make Me Smile. It made me smile. 😊
Still listening in 2025. The Heart and Soul of the band. Terry has been gone 47 years today.
#ripterrykath
Man, the more I study Gary Kath’s playing the more intimidated I become. He was absolutely fearless. He really was the greatest.
Terry Kath was a beast on guitar.
A BEAST!!!!!!
I’m 50 years old and I’m just discovering this Rock God.
I always thought Chicago was some easy listening crap that my parents listened to in the 70’s 😂
@@erosionhead420 No way......they had some rocking music!
@@erosionhead420 And you're 50?
this transitional period in music is one of the greatest periods in rock music history.
When I first heard them in 77 I thought Terry's voice Barry Whites or Mean Joe Greens, I saw an album with them on it and was kinda shocked. Oh and I lived there from 77-82..
He was the heart and soul of Chicago .
Hoy 6 de diciembre del 2024 sigo sonriendo, y a la vez me entristece recordar esa época maravillosa❤❤❤❤
Very beautiful music from Chicago, proud fan for over 50 years, Master Musicians
Wish you were still here Terry!
Supergroup indeed!!!!
He is not singing to a woman he is singing to what is called God! Smile on Terry! 😀😉
Then there is the radio version which is the condensed substance!
A band like this only comes around once.
So true!
And never forget that,,Terry Kath!!!
No i was rong : make me smile 😁 is the best of all time thank you Tarry kath we mis you everyday!
He really was Terrific! As a guitarist it would have been tough to be heard thru that great horn section..Yet he sure did..Hendrix even loved Terrys playing....Really liked his voice and playing.. God Bless Him. As well.as the other boyz in the band..!
Hendrix loved him said to them you have a guitarist better than me nows thats a compliment
You memtion the top 10 guitarists of all time why is he not on that list ?
A Masterpiece of the 7th decade. I love everything about it. God Bless our Chicago Transit Authority!
