I’m 65 and still in awe of Terry Kath. Anyone else? Unreal performance. ♥️🎸🎶
I’m with you on that. I think that Stratocaster he’s playing is about to catch fire! Jimmy Hendrix felt the same way, in awe!
still one of the greatest, should be more recognized.
I agree this song blows my mind every time. Has to be in the top 10 rock songs of all time.
Only a few lead guitar rock performances in history, such as some of those by Yes, even approach this combination of virtuosity and passion.
Awesome guitar work,right there.
I think he blew his mind with his talent
Whos listening in 2024? Peter cetera's voice and the band, just wow
We saw Chicago live in 2021 @ Pine Knob Amphitheater. They were just as tight and wonderful as ever! Had a blast , Show of a Lifetime for us !!❤❤❤❤
Hi, I'm in Providence, RI, I got front row for Chicago in 1974, I knew every word to every song, Terry Kath was gifted
Love those horns
@@joannpolidori7379 check out a 70's song "one fine morning" by Edison Lighthouse, I'm confident you will love the horns in that song
TERRY KATH- F Cetera!
I’m 66 yrs old and sitting cross legged on the floor listening to a band that incorporated horns and electric guitars successfully, what a great band!
I'm 66 and from Chicago I remember the birth of this band and we all understood they were seriously great musicians from the go.
I am 66 lol, was born in Chicago, but lived all over the country, and the world. I saw Thin Lizzy and Chicago in Germany to finish an all day/night concert. When Chicago finally played EVERYbody was sitting just chilling and loving it. Those were the days... So this is the "Official" 66 y/o thread
im in my garage listening now
The fact you're sitting cross legged on the floor, I salute you 😁☮️♥️🎤🎸🎸🎶🎶🎶

See this, kids? They're called MUSICIANS!
Nice ❤❤❤❤
Love it ❤❤❤❤
There are plenty of musicians out there, but the music industry is so pop-cash grab-centric, the real bands don't get a shot anymore.
U KNOW!
Great Comment 😊
Just think how blessed we were in 1970 to have Mr.Kath along with Hendrix, Allman, Clapton, Green, Beck, Page, Betts, Winters, Garcia, Santana, Kottke, Cooder, Harrison, Taylor,Taj, the list goes on. That will never happen again. That much talent in a single era.
hammer44head that's church brother
Kath plays with a groove and rhythm completely his own. The rhythm is almost as impressive as the lead guitar. Different styles I know but Dimebag Darrell was that way too.
Right you are hammer44head.........but sadly so. Fortunately I got to see Chicago in 1975!
Mike N. You can't even say Terry Kath and dime bag Darrell in the same sentence. Apples and oranges.
and do not forget Blackmore.
Terry Kath played the best guitar solo I've ever heard. RIP Terry
Never ever in a billion years will I ever hear a better guitar solo
He passed away? Do you know from what?
An accidental gunshot injury
Gypsy Jimi Machine Gun
I stood in disbelief in 1970 and still feel the same way in 2/7/2024 watching Terry Kath play that guitar solo !!! .
Even Jimmy Hendrix said, Terry was the best guitar player ever !
@@wandaklusman6730 Jimi was just being humble... There is no way Terry Kath was ever better than Jimi Hendrix! The next thing we know here, someone is going to say that Terry Kath was better than Eddie Van Halen. Kath was really good, but Eddie was even better than Jimi, but Jimi comes in at a very close second.
Saw them twice in the early 1970s.
Saw them at Temple U’s McGonigle hall March 1970…fantastic ❤
Terry was amazing and if you saw them live that solo changed. He almost never tried to reproduce the studio version. You almost got the feeling he was making it up within the structure laid out in the song. Kind of like Zappa feels a live version should be.
Back in the day, we thought that stuff like this would just go on forever.
Yep.
@@consco3667 It will, as long as we keep it alive.
Didn't we get fooled. Music has regressed since the days when songs and groups such as this were on the radio every day.
Now, radio sucks. I get all of my music on RUclips these days.
It does go on 4ever in my books
Man I wish I was 14 again, listening to music like this with my whole life ahead of me. What a wonderful time to be alive.
Doesn’t it just give you that belly-achy, bittersweet, feeling of nostalgia like nothing else?
Maybe when we die.....
75 and still enjoying. Peace to all thank you Chicago
@randyyw: Don't we all. 😁👍
I remember 14 too when this song came out. I remember riding up to Kokomo IN with my neighbor buddies and “Jeff” was 16 and was allowed to borrow the family car so we could run up to the mall. I had to lie to my parents. Lol. This song came on. The windows were already down. The car went faster and the radio went full-blast. Yes!
I wanna be just as happy in life as Chicago's trombone player is..
Wouldn’t that be great!
ummmm... thats coke......
Jimmy Trombone Seems To Always Be Feeling The Groove!❤
Yep that’s James. Having the best time of his life playing in one of the greatest bands of the era. He was one of the founding members.
Terry referred to him as
Jimmy Trombone
Just like another comment, I'm just about 70 and was in the 10th grade when this was played.
There's nothing today to compare to this music.
Amen, by far!
THIS IS ONE OF THOSE IF YOU HEAR IT ONCE IN YOUR LIFE, YOU WILL NEVER FORGET IT!!❤
I've played a little guitar...but when Terry does his solo, I get goose bumps. Anybody else feel the same way?
Oh yeah! You know he was hooking into some kind of inspired ride and you get to go along with him.
hendricks said he was the best
Evertime especially when I saw them live with Terry Kath.
Yeah, man. Bought those early Chicago albums circa '69 - '74. When I was in grammar school, high school. It sucked when Terry Kath died.
the more he played the less i thought I played.
I'm nearly 70 now and I'd give my right arm to play guitar like that, and my left arm to have hair like that.
You & me both lol
That would be torture to be able to play like that then realize you didn't have arms to play!
Me too!!!!
Got the hair but none of the talent 🤣😢
How you gonna play the guitar man?
54 years later and this song is currently being featured on a TV commercial and sounds as good as ever. One of Rock & Roll’s greatest hits by one of Rock’s most talented bands of all-time. The guitar solo is mind-numbing by the late, great Terry Kath - who Jimi Hendrix once said was a better guitarist than he was. One of my all-time favorite songs. It never gets old and as long as I keep listening to it, neither do I. Thanks for posting :^)
Please name the ad. I’ll look for it!
Amazon is the company. Just on ESPN+ telecast of basketball game between Texas Tech and Oklahoma. Last weekend, numerous times during NFL playoff games.
yes, fantasic. TV commercials the band is pround
You are missing my point. The song is one of Rock & Roll’s greatest hits and one of my favorites. Every time I hear it on the TV it makes me smile and brings back a flood of memories. Music is a big part of my life :^)
I'm 64, and this song is yesteryear to many followers. Hats off to Chicago and their endeavors.
My 11 YR OLD GIRL learning guitar heard me playing this song in my kitchen, comes from another room and said "I want to play like that!!!"
37 yr old mom loves this band and now an 11 yr old does too..
Outstanding mom
I'm 82....alive and listening and jumping around..... This music is/was a gift of God. Notghing like it ever....

A men brotha
i am 63 years old and have listened to this song on the radio all my life. Today, because of you tube, I have , for the first time , seen the passion that this band put into that song. I always felt it, but now have seen it.
same here man I was blown away .. cheers
Terry could flat PLAY
ditto joe cool
Ditto on the age, and the you tube exposure on many groups that I didn't see live in my youth.I always envied friends & classmates who went to concerts almost weekly.this was a challenge mostly cause I lived 2 counties away from....Chicago.
You betcha. I'm 64 and this song, like Get Off Of My Cloud, were blared over our Jr High School transistor radios!
I saw Chicago in 1976. It was the best concert I have ever been to. Like someone else said, no costumes, no glitz, just a very talented group of guys. Back in those days the concerts were 3 hrs long. Today we're lucky to get an hour and 1/2. RIP Terry Kath.
This is simply one of the most incredible guitar improvisations ever performed, and the band members clearly recognize its brilliance. Their facial expressions and how they step back and let Terry Kath take the lead speak volumes. He was truly amazing!
I thought it was supposed to sound like that. It really was pretty great.
I think of all the rock stars we tragically lost, losing Terry Kath hurt me the most. That guitar playing was far beyond most other mortals, then or now. Miss Alvin Lee too with his ES-335 belting out "I'm Going Home".
Terry improvised every night. Every single night and not just on this song. He even improvised the lyrics and his melody when he sang lead on It Better End Soon. If you get ahold of recent rerelease of Live At Carnegie Hall with every song played all week long you will hear lots of guitar solos played differently on same songs night after night. A Chicago concert from 1970 to 1975 was a guessing game. Every audience member knew every song but in the middle of one, Terry on guitar or even the horns would go off on a long jam. It was magic.
@@jerrykintner5699u were fortunate
Yes Terrys loss was tragic, but it was John Lennons senseless murder that hurt the most for me.
When the LIVE version is better than the RECORDED version, well this is SOLID GOLD!
LOL. yeah, and it really was never better than this night. Don't get me wrong, always great they were, but Kath played his MVP game in front of a camera. You may be able to find it, I looked for a minute so I could attach it for you but didn't see it, where Jim Pankow (trombone) was on some New Year's Bash TV show ... not long after this concert. I don't really remember if the whole band was there or not. It may have been local Chicago actually, but I just don't remember. I have, however, seen it online. Anyway, to the point: the MC, or interviewer, or whatever, asked Pankow about their "hot young guitar player". Pancow answered by saying something along the lines of, Terry put on a magic show up in Tanglewood a few months ago and we have been getting booking calls ever since.....
Some people said it was coke, others said whatever, but it was goddamn masterful.
I was privileged to see them several times in the early days and they were amazing. Not many bands are better live, but they truly were. Kath is a god! Hope he’s still playing somewhere. RIP Terry.
Better by a mile. I judge a band on what they can do on stage in real time. It should be better than the studio version.
@@davidhitchen5369 yeah there was this guy, Peter Frampton was his name . . . .

Terry Kath is EASILY one of the most underrated guitarists of ALL time. Simply put, the man was a BEAST. His solo in this performance is EPIC and one for the ages
When Joe Walsh says he was one of his favorite pickers, he is not underrated. Also, one can not forget his skill as a composer. Love them horns.

I noticed it too. But didn’t think anyone else would either. lol. Ya man….TK could improvise anything. His guitar solo on this song is legendary, not duplicatable, if that’s even a word.

Yeah. You're right. Seems like everything he had learned on the guitar at that point just came into play...probably without him having to think too much about it... and he was on some kind of otherworldly musical autopilot.... How is it possible that Terry Kath isn't on the Rolling Stones list of the 100 greatest guitar players of all time? His omission makes the list worthless.
Because Rolling Stone magazine sucks...*
Yeah man. Allen Collins the guitarist in Lynyrd Skynyrd who wrote the freebird solo isn’t on there. It’s bullshit. The freebird solo is ranked number 3 according to them, but the guy who made/ played the solo isn’t even on their list for 100 greatest guitarists. It’s the same thing with Terry. Did so much great shit on guitar but is somehow still under appreciated. I don’t understand it
Marty Humbertson musicly rolling Stone doesn't know what its talking about. I support the politics but music nope
Yet Jack White is on the list. LMFAO!
And Ron Asheton.
Because like another commenter said Rolling Stone sucks, and also because unfortunately most people associate Chicago with their later softer easy listening 80's hits, ('Hard To Say I'm Sorry' ,'You're The Inspiration' ,'Will You Still Love Me' etc) and not the hard rocking progressive/jazz rock band of their earlier years.
There is NOTHING more bad ass than that guitar solo. Terry Kath was a beast!!

Whew! Definitely right up there! I like Alvin Lee’s Woodstock “I’m going home” and Ernie Isley’ riff on “That lady” is supremely great. Many more. But this song, band and Kath is like no other.
@@surveytestmoney2550 Your racist blathering notwithstanding, agreed that Prince’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” Harrison tribute ranks high.
Terry was INSANE in his guitar!!! Miss him more than anyone as a musician!!!!
If Terry Kath continued that solo for an hour it would not be too long.
I kno, 7 minutes? Can’t b felt like 7 seconds. Absolutely that performance should’ve been 14minutes with a second Kath solo, wait, what am I saying? 21minutes with 3 Kath face melting solos. I’d start every f’n morning listening to it.
Just discovered Carnegie Hall 6to4. best version on YT and so far Kath’s best solo I can find. It’s unbelievable. Unfortunately no video.
Just think you can change out an engine listening to this tune Nice!
RickJason I was going to like this comment, but it was at 365...one like for everyday of the year that your comment holds true
You got that right! I just love watching him play it .. that's awesome stuff right there!
Terry Kath makes his guitar look like a toy in a childs hands. So much pure soul. Just mesmerizing.
Well he was huge.
He was 6' 2" tall and stuck together, so he WAS a large man. He was also only 24 years old when he torched that solo.
You have added a unique and great impression of his performance. If you never have, watch Prince's part on While My Guitar Gently Weeps at George Harrison's posthumous induction into the Rock Hall. He's not on until the second half of the song.
@@latkagravas2967 YES!!! That is one of the greatest solos I've ever seen. I have always considered Prince better than Hendrix (I know that's not a popular opinion) but Prince did things with a fret neck that had to be recorded on video or wouldn't be believed.
I was fourteen then and this music filled my ears daily. Still love this band to this day and never tire of hearing it.
I feel guilty forgetting that these guys are probably the most awesome US band of all time. Real musicians, unlike most others.🤩🎹🎷🎺🎸🥁🎤Thanks for the memories.
When Jimi Hendrix says he was in awe of Terry Kath’s guitar playing, then you know what kind of talent Terry had. He and that band were genius level in musicianship.
Yeah they got down I played in Drum Corps and I've seen them cars play that song and then for rock and roll
you should watch More Than Ever : The History of Chicago it explains it all in the documentary
Thats word bro
This guitar solo is totally astonishing... and that amazing Chicago band not only kept up, they just kept speeding up as if challenging (but not intimidating) Terry. It seems he could have played even faster! So much respect!
I wonder if Jimi was there that night digging it...
Then, less than 2 months later, on 9/18/70... Jimi was gone.
Missing so many great musicians. 🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶 They have brought joy to our lives and to the world. Bless them forever.
Oh I difintly agree with that statement Sir. Great just Great music.
I’m so thankful I saw them before Terry passed. He is irreplaceable.
Never forget Mr. KATH
At 70 years old It never gets old with Terry! Im still listening!
74 me too
75 me too
This is the first time I've ever seen Terry Kath perform live and holy crap was he a madman. Just amazing.
I am 67 and on that commercial. I had to listen to it. My late sister Vanessa love Terry Kath. 2 Black sisters listening to Chicago. We were different. Miss you sis.
Wowsa ! I have heard this many times.Never gets old.
His entire soul was in that master piece, He unleashed one for the ages, He took command of that guitar and it rewarded Him, and blessed us as well
Terry Kath
Rest in Love 💜🙏🏽‼
I always like when a guitar player sounds like themselves. Terry was one of the best.....
Yup
Terry was brilliant.
An underrated beast
I'm 65 now, still amazed at this song, the incredible guitar, horns, singing. First saw Chicago live in Toronto, 1977. Have seen them a couple more times recently. Oh to go back and be with my buddies, our hair long, not a care in the world.
One of the most underrated guitarists of all time. That solo goes up against all the greats.
I'm a big Mark Knopfler fan, it's a pity Terry left so soon; technical and rhythmic virtuosity second to none. Everytime I watch this, I feel like I'm seeing maybe the greatest guitar footage ever. Just a flawless performance of an incredibly difficult solo. Headed over to 'Down to the Waterline' now.
@@user-dn8cp9wg4x Yes! I was never a big Prince fan but last night RUclips threw me the R&RHOF video honoring George Harrison-While My Guitar Gently Weeps and OMG the Prince solo-just amazing talent ruclips.net/video/6SFNW5F8K9Y/видео.html
If Terry was still alive he's be right up there with the best. He is anyway but if only.....
Probably one of the best guitar solos ever!!!
totally the most involved solo ever played.
Such a great talent gone too soon. What was he thinking when he jokingly pointed the gun to his head not realizing that it was loaded, such a sad tradegy.
@@anthonychiara1200 So sad. A star who’s talent burned the brightest… then he’s gone
Terry was Uber good. But also Tommy Bolin. Who else?
Who else had stupid talent and went way too soon?
I don’t know if I have ever heard a better guitar solo than Terry Kath on 25 or 6 to 4. He is mesmerizing.
You're right brother/Sister. Terry was and will always be the best damn player on Earth.
the studio version of that solo is NOTHING compared to the live version. this one is as u say mesmerizing.

He got so into it that at times he looks like he is going to lose his balance. Always incredible to see someone get so captured by music.

I’m 56 Chicago has always been my favorite band. And this is why!
What can you say about a performance like that? Incredible in every respect. Chicago was one of the inspirations for my band, Ruby Port Band, formed less than a year later. We're still performing several of their songs almost 53 years later and people still respond viscerally as soon as they recognize the opening chords. Sheer magic. Love you guys; always will.
...AWESOME Lifestyle- do you get the girls still...you know what I mean...
I don't always listen to Chicago, but when I do, SO DO THE NEIGHBORS....(RIP -TK)
LOL....Amen,
I LOL'd
Love it!!!
@@bkswanson2461 Yeah, Chicago rocks. It's Only the Beginning . I saw them live with Earth, Wind, and Fire. An extravaganza. They solo'd and sang each other's songs and all together.

Wow, what Amazing energy there must
have been!!! xxx
The song starts when Terry says it starts, whether the rest of the band is ready or not. ❤️
Well put, and you can kinda feel watching this that this may be what Kath is thinking ☺️
Looks like they were waiting for on the drums, but it does look like he called the shots
@@321ssteeeeeve Terry was definitely the bandleader.
@@alcambrola2834 when he left us, the band sucked. Just one man forged this band on par with Zeppelin, Sabbath, Hendrix, even the horns and the simpleton drum theme compliment his sound and character. His guitar sounds so damn good in every note, you just feel it.
@@321ssteeeeeve When Terry was gone, I stayed a fan for a bit and even bought they're next album with Donnie Dacus on guitar.
That did it for me. I was done. Being a trumpet player, I was into different styles and sounds and fortunately. Tower of Power were rapidly becoming my favorite band even before Terry was gone.
Man.....Terry Kath.🎸👍......just a guitar monster!
Thats gotta be one of the most charismatic magnetic solo guitar perfomances ever.
Has to be one of the very best guitar solos in R&R history.
It gets no better than this. no reverb, no dubbing, no cheap thrills. Just great, organic music by an all-time great band. Has Kath got chops or what?!
some reverb...on that fender dual showman amp Kath is using (sitting on its side in from of the speakers)
Agreed!!
Agreed. With a touch of Wah Wah pedal.
\m/ not to mention the perfect poetry of the miserys of the last night of a coke bender
Totally nice
Playing guitar while having an epileptic seizure is a truly amazing. RIP Terry Kath.
Terry Kath and Duane Allman were the greatest guitarist to ever live, a concert in heaven between the two of them would give the name Heaven a certainty of paradise.
This must be about the 50th time I’ve watched this and I still get chills watching Terry solo!!!
50? 150 for me.
Amen! Same here. Only waited 50 years to see the greatness I heard on the radio. Thanks You Tube
Joe Walsh Understands 100% Why as do I .My fingers are not as long as his to do that !!!!
@@awboat I was just being modest…🤪🤪🤪
This is one of my most favorite videos ever! Terry Kath!!!! He gets me out of my seat! Ahhhhhhh! yes!
I'm primarily a metal fan but have started to realize how criminally underrated of a guitarist Terry Kath is. Downright insane level of talent.
And that comment came from a man that played on the best Obituary record of all time, "Cause of Death."
@@stevezentner4161 Whoa... _trippy_
Everyone in Chicago dude

Dude....he plays with punk rock Intensity
Lisntening tonight and whenever I have the chance..Love this
Most definitely ami most definitely amazing I can't get enough of Terry Kath
Terry Kath was a monster guitar player. More folks should know about him.
You know what to say
He was extremely underrated!
Nothing from today compares, never will all legends in time!
A very sad tragic ending for Terry. A shame
Beyond anyone in his era.
I'm discovering one of the most innovative and fluid guitar player I've ever seen. Terry Kath is amazing. The band as a whole is amazing as well.
“Old” Chicago was awesome.
@@jackhays1194totally sold out in the 80s. No use seeing the band live now, none of the original members. A glorified cover band
