@@lewisc215it’s true. Hendrix was interviewed and asked “what’s it like being the greatest guitarist in the world?” He replied “I don’t know go ask Terry Kath”.
Why'd he have to play with guns? Such a loss. Don't understand the fascination some rock musicians have had with firearms. Maybe because they're loud and explosive like rock music? That's the only thing I can come up with
This is simply one of the most incredible guitar improvisations ever performed, and the band members clearly recognize its brilliance. Their facial expressions and how they step back and let Terry Kath take the lead speak volumes. He was truly amazing!
I think of all the rock stars we tragically lost, losing Terry Kath hurt me the most. That guitar playing was far beyond most other mortals, then or now. Miss Alvin Lee too with his ES-335 belting out "I'm Going Home".
Terry improvised every night. Every single night and not just on this song. He even improvised the lyrics and his melody when he sang lead on It Better End Soon. If you get ahold of recent rerelease of Live At Carnegie Hall with every song played all week long you will hear lots of guitar solos played differently on same songs night after night. A Chicago concert from 1970 to 1975 was a guessing game. Every audience member knew every song but in the middle of one, Terry on guitar or even the horns would go off on a long jam. It was magic.
54 years later and this song is currently being featured on a TV commercial and sounds as good as ever. One of Rock & Roll’s greatest hits by one of Rock’s most talented bands of all-time. The guitar solo is mind-numbing by the late, great Terry Kath - who Jimi Hendrix once said was a better guitarist than he was. One of my all-time favorite songs. It never gets old and as long as I keep listening to it, neither do I. Thanks for posting :^)
Amazon is the company. Just on ESPN+ telecast of basketball game between Texas Tech and Oklahoma. Last weekend, numerous times during NFL playoff games.
You are missing my point. The song is one of Rock & Roll’s greatest hits and one of my favorites. Every time I hear it on the TV it makes me smile and brings back a flood of memories. Music is a big part of my life :^)
Such a stupid death. Drugs were everywhere and we lost so many great musicians back then due to them. I never thought Terry meant to kiil himself, but whatever way you look at it, he did.
@@bethvirginiaphillips4583 I am sure it was accidental, he WAS struggling with weight gain and not happy about it, but he loved his wife and child, plus believed in more music creation to come. He would have never have taken his life intentionally.
Everything about that solo is pure gold, even the side stuff - Terry ripping at it while barely looking at the neck, playing most of it with his thumb wrapped over the neck, almost strumming at times but still hitting notes cleanly. The guy was a monster player. A special talent. RIP.
And he blew his brains out. Terry Kath was a victim of the Los Angeles crazed Music Industry in the 1970s. There are many other casualties. I lived in LA in the 1970s, and to 1990. My advice is get the fuck out.
Yeah. You're right. Seems like everything he had learned on the guitar at that point just came into play...probably without him having to think too much about it... and he was on some kind of otherworldly musical autopilot.... Taken over by a power higher than himself. A force of nature....like a tidal wave driven by hurricane. Man, my comments are so deep and poetic 😂😂😂😂😂. Anyway, that solo is some good stuff... have only watched it about a hundred times
It's sad to see that most of this generation doesn't recognize the advances that these guys made in music. Most of their music wouldn't exist without these guys. "Their" referring to Gen xers. My phone wants me to type xerox instead of Gen exers.
He's the best guitarist ever in my life I've seen. 25 or 6 to 4 live is the best guitarist on the planet at that time of his life. No one could play like that at his young age. A bunch of kids. Its a God given talent. You can't teach that. Howdy doody time dude. Don't play with the best. Like Tom Petty's says in his song. AND I DON'T LIKE IT. Howdy doody. Don't play with me dude!!!
How is it possible that Terry Kath isn't on the Rolling Stones list of the 100 greatest guitar players of all time? His omission makes the list worthless.
Yeah man. Allen Collins the guitarist in Lynyrd Skynyrd who wrote the freebird solo isn’t on there. It’s bullshit. The freebird solo is ranked number 3 according to them, but the guy who made/ played the solo isn’t even on their list for 100 greatest guitarists. It’s the same thing with Terry. Did so much great shit on guitar but is somehow still under appreciated. I don’t understand it
Because like another commenter said Rolling Stone sucks, and also because unfortunately most people associate Chicago with their later softer easy listening 80's hits, ('Hard To Say I'm Sorry' ,'You're The Inspiration' ,'Will You Still Love Me' etc) and not the hard rocking progressive/jazz rock band of their earlier years.
If you are under the age of 30 and watching this. Bless you! You have a genuine beautiful taste in music. Please don’t let this music fade away. Play it for your children. Cheers
I am so thankful that I grew up with this. There is NOTHING like this today and I feel so bad for the kids who missed the greatest generation of music ever!! Kath was an absolute monster and was as good as any guitarist.
I feel more sorry for the 1000+ generations of humans before this who never had the chance to hear this piece of epic music. At least it's hear now for us to keep enjoying. RUclips is one of our species' greatest inventions.
He's a legend among legends, but my generation (1981) and still now have been treated to legends too, my personal favorite being Dave Grohl of Nirvana and The Foo Fighters. I hate comparing, it's just genuine raw talent shining through in different ways and I'm so glad I get to enjoy it.
No fireworks, no motorcycles on stage, no undulating lip syncing chicks in body suits. Just a group of serious musicians, practicing their craft. Thank you, Mr Kath and everyone else, seen and otherwise, that made CTA -> Chicago, happen. Thank you very much.
I absolutely love watching a brilliant musician get lost in a grove and just go off. I feel like they are on a journey and take me along for the ride, and man what a ride. Music nowadays just doesn't do that.
i actually think this video is mostly bullshit, first instance. you can see the truss bar on his guitar is bent like a mother fucker early in the song. second, he's never actually using his whammy bar when its actually needed during his bends. i love the song but i think this is one of the early cases of bands having to play to their record live.
I noticed it too. But didn’t think anyone else would either. lol. Ya man….TK could improvise anything. His guitar solo on this song is legendary, not duplicatable, if that’s even a word.
Right?? And then Cetera adds a little bass, then Lamm is like, OK, here we go. And then when the drums are ready Kath starts the song and off they go. Brilliant.
Who knew in the 70’ & 80’ we would be witnessing the best 2 decades of music our country would ever have and never have music like this again!!! Just look ,I should say just listen to this no synthesizers autotone etc., just raw pure talent🥰
When Jimi Hendrix says he was in awe of Terry Kath’s guitar playing, then you know what kind of talent Terry had. He and that band were genius level in musicianship.
This guitar solo is totally astonishing... and that amazing Chicago band not only kept up, they just kept speeding up as if challenging (but not intimidating) Terry. It seems he could have played even faster! So much respect! I wonder if Jimi was there that night digging it... Then, less than 2 months later, on 9/18/70... Jimi was gone. Missing so many great musicians. 🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶 They have brought joy to our lives and to the world. Bless them forever.
You have added a unique and great impression of his performance. If you never have, watch Prince's part on While My Guitar Gently Weeps at George Harrison's posthumous induction into the Rock Hall. He's not on until the second half of the song.
@@latkagravas2967 YES!!! That is one of the greatest solos I've ever seen. I have always considered Prince better than Hendrix (I know that's not a popular opinion) but Prince did things with a fret neck that had to be recorded on video or wouldn't be believed.

Kath was in pure beastmode! That reverb/vibrato was sick. You can hearing it bleeding from his soul through the guitar. RIP Terry, you truly were one of the greats
One of the rare times live was better than recorded. Lead singer, drummer, bass, horns and Smoking lead guitar. This is as good as rock and roll gets. Gets better by the year. Amazing performance.
Johnathan Hart That’s my point. Anyone can sound good in a studio. It’s takes talent to sound great live. Many, many artists can’t bring it live. This song does just that.
Right, Damo, better than any studio could record- the way the rev up, from adjusting the drums and chug along, and that iconic chord change comes in gives you chills- the guitar solo from the heart. Even the vocal! I saw them live in stage in 1970 in Des Moines, they weren’t this relaxed and ON! ❤️🔥❤️
I'm 72 yrs old. Saw them in 1974 blown away is an understatement. Such great musicians. Mixing horns with guitars, keyboards etc. awesome. There are no words for Terry Kath. Such greatness. He'll always be one of my favorites.🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
It gets no better than this. no digital manipulation, no dubbing, no cheap thrills. Just great, organic music by an all-time great band. Has Kath got chops or what?!
Damn ... Kath was absolutely possessed here. What an incredible solo. The man was outstanding at every single aspect of guitar playing. As good at fills as anyone I can think of, as solid in rhythm, and able to ebb and flow from rhythm to fill to solos and remain amazingly musical throughout all that he played. Never outshone the band, always drove and elevated them.
Peter Cetera’s voice is beautiful in this song and of course Terry Kath’s guitar solo, there are no words to describe his talent. This may be Chicago’s best song performance. I can’t stop watching this video.
Anyone who doesn't agree that Terry's solo in 25 or 6 to 4 isn't one of the most amazing (if not THE most) guitar solos in rock n roll history is just out of their mind. Even Hendrix said that Kath was the greatest guitarist in the universe.
God I love everything about this performance. From the easygoing beginning where Terry Kath sets a tempo while the drums get set up, to Peter Cetera's patented clenched teeth singing, to trombonist James Pankow absolute JOY watching the others in his band perform, to the fact that this song has an incredible guitar solo that TAKES UP HALF OF THE SONG. So amazing.
I'm 26 and I'm here to tell you that it doesn't matter how old you are for you to enjoy any kind of music. Music is freedom, so be go be free and enjoy life, and beautiful music like this.
Terry Kath's speed and precision (as well as passion) on guitar defies human abilities. Even Jimi Hendrix said that Kath was the best ever. He was a gift from God taken from us too soon. I never tire of this song. This is the best live guitar performance that I have ever seen, and I've certainly seen my share.
No strobe lights, fireworks or glitz. Just plain music that spoke for itself. Music that was raw and honest, and hit you right in the gut. Sadly, those days are long gone.

I don't know how many times I've watched this since it first went on RUclips, but it still absolutely literally brings tears to my eyes. What a staggering talent Terry Kath was. He had SO MUCH on the shelf, and he always pulled it all off and gave it to his audience in every performance. Stunning.

Susan Hudak-Scherer That is not true. Jimi was intimidated by Terry Kath's mastery. He saw him play at the Whiskey A Go Go a couple times, but refused to play with Terry or Roy Buchanan out of pure fear. The week before Jimi died he spent with my ex-girlfriend and Eric Burdon pretty much drunk the entire time. He was depressed, his talent exhausted. He had nothing left.
@@alcambrola2834 when he left us, the band sucked. Just one man forged this band on par with Zeppelin, Sabbath, Hendrix, even the horns and the simpleton drum theme compliment his sound and character. His guitar sounds so damn good in every note, you just feel it.

I love how Terry Kath just waits patiently and starts slowly amping up the rhythm until everyone jumps on board from the keyboards to the drums and horns he was the engine of Chicago
That’s what cha do in a BAND, they don’t like empty space... Danny was having trouble getting set up to his liking ... so Terry started a rhythm and knew Seraphine would eventually be ready and join in.. good stuff
A piece of advice for today's guitar players. Nothing you do in your bedroom compares to what happens when you play with others. Just watch the players and their mutual effect. You can see how the music gets to them. They couldn't care less about the audience, the cameras or the BS. that passes for performances today. !
I've probably seen this performance a couple of dozen times over the years and it never gets old. Terry Kath was an absolute master. Rarely do we witness such artistry, such complete mastery in usage of the ENTIRE fret board, with the melodic entanglements bursting from within a chaotic symphony of raw guitar work.

I remember the first time I heard that. Even after seeing things like this it blew me away. Very rarely have I ever seen any musician in The Zone like he was here. Just amazing.
Well, Jimi famously deflected praise to others calling a lot of other people the best. However in this case he was talking about someone who was on the same planet talent wise.

A good friend, a serious guitar player, went up to Tanglewood that summer just to hear Kath. When he came back he couldn't even talk about it. Blown totally away.
Right on, man. You've captured the essence perfectly. It's hard to put into words the pure profundity of early raw rock'n'roll. It just doesn't get any better than this.
The world has seen many great guitarists (SRV, Jimi, Eric, Jeff, BB, Eddie and many others), but Terry is one of my all time favorites. It’s so impressive how he can effortlessly rip out scorching licks while hardly ever looking down at the guitar. It’s like an extension of his arms and mind. It’s a real shame that his career was cut short in a tragic moment of foolishness. RIP, Terry.

I was privileged to see them several times in the early days and they were amazing. Not many bands are better live, but they truly were. Kath is a god! Hope he’s still playing somewhere. RIP Terry.
Better by a mile. I judge a band on what they can do on stage in real time. It should be better than the studio version.

Why'd he have to play with guns? Such a loss. Don't understand the fascination some rock musicians have had with firearms. Maybe because they're loud and explosive like rock music? That's the only thing I can come up with
I grew up listening to Chicago, I'm 63, but I still love 60's music 🎵🎶!!!!
This is simply one of the most incredible guitar improvisations ever performed, and the band members clearly recognize its brilliance. Their facial expressions and how they step back and let Terry Kath take the lead speak volumes. He was truly amazing!
I thought it was supposed to sound like that. It really was pretty great.
@@jerrykintner5699u were fortunate
Yes Terrys loss was tragic, but it was John Lennons senseless murder that hurt the most for me.
Yeah. You're right. Seems like everything he had learned on the guitar at that point just came into play...probably without him having to think too much about it... and he was on some kind of otherworldly musical autopilot.... How is it possible that Terry Kath isn't on the Rolling Stones list of the 100 greatest guitar players of all time? His omission makes the list worthless.
Because Rolling Stone magazine sucks...*
I don’t understand it
Marty Humbertson musicly rolling Stone doesn't know what its talking about. I support the politics but music nope
Yet Jack White is on the list. LMFAO!
And Ron Asheton.
Cheers

Did you notice, Terry upped the tempo at least 3 times, and the rest of the guys just kept up. THAT IS A TIGHT BAND!
Yeah I noticed that also. Unreal. Those guys were so tuned into each other.
I don't know how many times I've watched this since it first went on RUclips, but it still absolutely literally brings tears to my eyes. What a staggering talent Terry Kath was. He had SO MUCH on the shelf, and he always pulled it all off and gave it to his audience in every performance. Stunning.
+Daniel J. Phillips That is why Hendrix loved and also feared him...
+Daniel J. Phillips Me too. Wow...
+Daniel J. Phillips Bingo!! KABOOM.
+Daniel J. Phillips Righto! Would love to have video of their Fillmore West Show in August '69 with 22 yr old Terry's incendiary guitar work. I was irritated not to be able to attend Woodstock that weekend. Looking at it now, I'm glad I caught the Fillmore show instead.
The song starts when Terry says it starts, whether the rest of the band is ready or not. ❤️
Well put, and you can kinda feel watching this that this may be what Kath is thinking ☺️
Looks like they were waiting for on the drums, but it does look like he called the shots
@@321ssteeeeeve Terry was definitely the bandleader.
@@alcambrola2834 when he left us, the band sucked. Just one man forged this band on par with Zeppelin, Sabbath, Hendrix, even the horns and the simpleton drum theme compliment his sound and character. His guitar sounds so damn good in every note, you just feel it.
@@321ssteeeeeve When Terry was gone, I stayed a fan for a bit and even bought they're next album with Donnie Dacus on guitar.
That did it for me. I was done. Being a trumpet player, I was into different styles and sounds and fortunately. Tower of Power were rapidly becoming my favorite band even before Terry was gone.
I'm back here again for the 100th time to say: WHAT THE F**K!
This is the most f**king incredible guitar solo in history.
Terry Kath.
I love how Terry Kath just waits patiently and starts slowly amping up
the rhythm until everyone jumps on board from the keyboards
to the drums and horns
he was the engine of Chicago
Like a starving tiger waiting by the brush and seeing his prey near.....
That’s what cha do in a BAND, they don’t like empty space... Danny was having trouble getting set up to his liking ... so Terry started a rhythm and knew Seraphine would eventually be ready and join in.. good stuff
No Terry, no power, no fire... 49 years later and I sttll wanna jump and get the guitar when I hear this song !
A piece of advice for today's guitar players. Nothing you do in your bedroom compares to what happens when you play with others. Just watch the players and their mutual effect. You can see how the music gets to them. They couldn't care less about the audience, the cameras or the BS. that passes for performances today. !
Excellent comment. I don't think anyone could have put it better then you just did.
Totally agree!
So eloquently said. I watch this at least once a week. Saw Terry 8 times and when he left us too early the band never was the same.
Sheer brilliance from Terry Kath. Superlatives haven't yet been invented to properly describe his genius. A light that went out far too soon.
As the story goes; Jimi Hendrix once said of Terry Kath.... "That cat is better than I am"
66 years old here in 2024. So glad I grew up with the greatest music ever. If only could go back...for real.
I wanna be just as happy in life as Chicago's trombone player is..
Wouldn’t that be great!
ummmm... thats coke......
Jimmy Trombone Seems To Always Be Feeling The Groove!❤
Yep that’s James. Having the best time of his life playing in one of the greatest bands of the era. He was one of the founding members.
Terry referred to him as
Jimmy Trombone
THIS IS ONE OF THOSE IF YOU HEAR IT ONCE IN YOUR LIFE, YOU WILL NEVER FORGET IT!!❤
Holy crap that dude shreds! He has to be the most underrated guitar player ever.
He's a fukin machine ain't he
Worlds greatest along with David Gilmore and Jimmy Page.
Welcome to the wonderful band of Chicago
Agreed. Buchanan was another one that never got his just due.
Best ever
I was introduced to Chicago thanks to my grandpa, at around 10-12 years old. I'm blessed to have people who introduced me to this kind of music, simply magical, thank you dad, and thank you to both grandpas for this exceptional music taste! Rock on 🎸🔥✌
Jimi Hendrix called Terry Kath the greatest guitarist in the universe after seeing him play. That says it all.
It’s too bad neither one lived long enough to duel each other!!🤔
@@Unitopia117 Unfortunately, he did something stupid with a gun and all of that awesome talent was snuffed out too soon.
@@danshearer7627 I wish Terry Kath had learned to handle weapons as well as he handled musical instruments . I can't play a musical instrument , but I know the basics of gun safety .
Its 2021 and this is still amazing. Terry absolutely shredding that strat
Just like another comment, I'm just about 70 and was in the 10th grade when this was played.
There's nothing today to compare to this music.
Amen, by far!
I agree that Chicago had great songs but there are a lot of excellent musicians today
It's not that recent but listen to "Illinoise' by Sufyan Stephens
You might try, Marcus King, if you like great guitar and silky smooth vocals.
Go old 70s 😢to back 😮 and start over 😮😢
What a freaking guitar player! Wow!!!👍👍👍💕
I wonder if the people in the audience actually realize what they were actually watching. This was a man. A guitar and an amp no auto tune no smoke no lights shredding like no other guitarist ever had before. This man Teri Kath was a rare talent. Like no other. That my friends is the best 2 minute solo u will ever hear. I watched the Teri Kath experience on RUclips. Best 5 bucks I ever spent. There are 3-5 of the best guitarist talking on Teri. They all say hey. I been playing guitar for 30-40 years. I know exactly what set up Teri was playing. To the strings to the fret board. To all the little things he did to his guitar. I know exactly what he did. But I can’t get the same sound he produced to save my life. Teri was in a zone here. 1 of a kind. Look at the trombone player. He’s in awe. RIP mister Kath. No one will ever top this 2 minutes. Ever. A man a guitar and an amp. Wow. Talent. Pure talent.
He sure was in some zone, and I'm not sure what planet. That was intense and he was like one with that guitar.
A good friend, a serious guitar player, went up to Tanglewood that summer just to hear Kath. When he came back he couldn't even talk about it. Blown totally away.
I've played guitar in rock bands for 20 years, and not to bad. On a scale of 1-10, Terry's an 11, and I'm a 0.5. Just ridicules.....
rabid
Right on, man. You've captured the essence perfectly. It's hard to put into words the pure profundity of early raw rock'n'roll. It just doesn't get any better than this.
The world has seen many great guitarists (SRV, Jimi, Eric, Jeff, BB, Eddie and many others), but Terry is one of my all time favorites. It’s so impressive how he can effortlessly rip out scorching licks while hardly ever looking down at the guitar. It’s like an extension of his arms and mind. It’s a real shame that his career was cut short in a tragic moment of foolishness. RIP, Terry.
No guitar expert, but I believe Terry was the first shredder on lead, and he never even touched the whammie bar on this song.
It was foolishness. What reasonable person puts a gun to their head, and pulls the trigger multiple times even using a second gun? Foolish underplays what happened.
@@mediascribbleIt’s hard to understand it. But imagine being a rockstar, playing gigs with thousands of people screaming your songs. And then suddenly, it’s late at night youre just sitting at home watching tv. Adrenaline is addictive. That’s why so many rockstars pick up the bottle or the needle. They face a comedown after every show.
That Solo ripped a hole in the fabric of the Universe. Gracias Chicago!
@ for you, maybe
Andrew Olson just go away
@ nope, it's called an opinion
@ you'll have to do better than that to hurt my feelings. You are entitled to your opinion, just like everyone on here is.
😂😂😂
Im 68 and proud my home town Chicago had a namesake band that kicked this much ass. Never thought live they could be better than the recording.😮
