Wow😳 I’ve known this song since it came out and never knew they played their own instruments. Shame on me and thank you Harri for playing this particular video.✌️
Janice Marie Johnson is one of the most underrated bassists out there. She's amazing!
I'm one of those guys that always says reactors should listen to the studio version first...except for live videos like this! They are very rare but this is definitely one of the exceptional ones. A fantastic live performance, slightly faster and more energetic (for once) than the studio one. It's usually the other way around! A real snapshot of the awesomeness of those times!
Totally agree
Yeah agree - this is one of the exceptions that proves the rule. I have always thought that the studio version of this could not be bettered - but this performance certainly equals it!
I actually wish he listened to the studio version. Much of the guitar sound is not captured well or not at all.
@@kimhesketh2016 True enough, but the overall energy of this and them having fun with the middle bit makes up for it IMO.
Yes, sir the 70s disco era put out some of greatest material ever. I still rock it today 2022 to keep me going throughout the day.
I enjoyed clubbing in the 70s. I had a great time on Division street in Chicago. The 70s hit when I was in my 20s and just leaving the Navy. Perfect timing.
I was 16 when this came out, I fell in love with both of them, but that Bass player...Whoooo!♥️✌️
Fantastic performance taking disco to a whole new height. Great request Brandon! 🌺✌️
1978? Oh yes, I was on the dance floor! 💃 One of my best memories is how the elevated dance floor was lit up with colors flashing on and off making the excitement move your feet...glad to be dancing. I remember thinking how you knew you were dancing in an era that you hoped would never end.
If you like this groove you should check out "Dazz" by Brick, "Jungle Boogie" by Kool and the Gang, Anything by P-Funk, "Let it Whip" by the Dazz Band or "Back in Love Again" by the LTD.
All great tunes! But, Back In Love Again was by LTD 😊
@@daledodson1279 My bad! It's fixed now!
I certainly remember this band from the disco days. They played such great songs. 🕺🏻💃
I was 17 when this originally aired, and I was thoroughly smitten. Janice-Marie Johnson's voice, badass bass groove, and pure gorgeousness were an amazing combination.
Super talented ladies. Loved them and their music. Thanks for this. 👏👏🇨🇦🇨🇦
Hi Mr. Harri, Great song, try their cover of "Sukiyaki".. ♠W.G.
I was there, but I just didn't appreciate it as much then as I do now. I heard that song and just discounted as disco sucks since I was in to hard rock at the time, I remember them playing in the enlisted mans club on base and the dance floor would be packed, but now that I'm much older, my mind is wide open and just seeing these two beauties rock out on their instruments took it to another level.
No lip sync'ing on the vocals. Great!
saw this performance in '78 on midnite special. it was a 'go to' music program at the time that everyone watched. i remember being blown away by the 2 front ladies because up to that point all of the black girl groups were vocalists being backed up by a band or an orchestra. playing the bass and guitar was just too damn cool.
Wow... if only they could put "The Midnight Special' back on TV. Live music, no tech other than amps.
Great man, I'm so glad this video popped up. Man, (taste of honey) killed midnight special for this generation. It was a live show that came on Saturday night and had all the top musical performers of that 70s era 72 to 81 and some comedy guesses sometimes
Always one of my favorite Disco songs, just the right amount of everything…
Hey Harri, thanks for pointing out the Hohner clavinet. I have heard this great song a lot, but always mainly just heard the bass and guitar I have a clavinet, and that guy has inspired me to inprove my technique on it.
I am so glad I grew up in this era!!! This song was constantly on the radio. So, so many great artists during that era. I will certainly start giving recommendations.
Wow that was cool . I was only 11 at the time and disco was getting overplayed and I was getting into rock at the time . Now looking back and seeing these ladies were actually really playing is very impressive! Cheers.
I too saw this performance on 'The Midnight Special' "back in the day" and found myself pleasantly surprised by the instrumental prowess in addition to the pultritudinousness of the two leads.
Watching now I find myself wondering if the song may have been inspired in part by a bit of mild if well-meaning male journalistic condescension in a Rolling Stone article on Kiki Dee, whose 'I Got the Music In Me' was a hit in '74 and who opened for Elton John in early '75 in Toronto on his 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' tour and returned to the stage during his set for their duet, 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart'.
The writer opened his piece with an anecdote wherein Kiki says she wants to show that a woman can be feminine and "still boogie", with "a cute emphasis on the 'oogie'".
Call me an ambulance! I have had too much honey! Fantastic groove, they absolutely killed it.
Ah yes, When the dance moves were BAD and the grooves were SUPERBAD.
Such a great era growing up. Checkout the Live at Roundhead Studio performances of L.A.B "In The Air", "My Brother" and "Fashion Dread" etc. Just a little Taste Of Kiwi Honey😉.
Koooool!! Hello from Brazil ! ( I'm 56 pro-bassist and I remember listening Ang "trying " to transcrible the Bass in a guitar...☺️ ☺️☺️✌🏻
Although it was released fairly late in the disco craze (1978), this was definitely one of the best of that wave combining a lot of elements not usually found together in disco-pop. That radio friendly build intro is a masterpiece of its kind (assuring it airplay) and throughout it ebbs and flows really well - but never loses the essential danceability. Sure, it would never win prizes for lyrics, but as a package it is definitely right up there with the best.
I had no idea they played guitar. Beautiful and bad ass!🥰🥰
Masters of Power R&B Riffs! When Intelligence Meets Royalty 🎸🪩✌🏾
Puts me back at disco.the Lush in Santa Monica, Calif!😍 btw..no longer exists!
Tasty licks. She even licks her fingers before they do that mid-song breakdown! LOL
In 1978 I was 30 years old and I went dancing a lot. 🙂
A great tune. I was 14 when this came out and I've got this on my phone. Did you notice it gradually got faster and faster. In fact I think it lost it's groove a bit by the end and sounded rushed. Been a drummer and bass player for over 50 years and it's a shame they didn't slow it down a bit. But nevertheless it's such a fat tune.
I started college in the city in 1978. I was dating my eventual husband so we had our favorite club (when we could afford it) and always a dance partner. Some times at midnight that summer, someone would put their speaker in the hall (usually the RA) and ply this or Rick James and we would take a dance break from studying. Good times.
The Clavinet is more prominent on this live version than on the studio version. Love it.
does anything get sexier than two gorgeous ebony queens jamming with a guitar and a bass and doing it on a high level? absolutely fire
Look at the pure fun people were having on that dance floor, they're going completely wild. I have no idea if the kids are even dancing at concerts nowadays. Probably not.
So sad you picked the live mono version of this song. The stereo studio version is much better. Thumbs Down.
Saw them perform this in 2001 or so for the pbs concert. They killed it then too
Love this part of my childhood soundtrack... I remember when this was brand new & I bought their 45's with my babysitting money!! 🥰 Sister Sledge was another GREAT female band, especially living in Pittsburgh territory! ❤️
I'm 57 and I never saw that video. WOW
Wow the studio version doesn't do this song justice. Fire!
Saw them for Grad Night at Disney. You would've loved the '70's.
This is the song I immediately associate with Roller Rink skate dancing days!
This and Disco Inferno - everyone was on the dance floor!
Just love your reaction to the music.
Memories: 11-12 in the club, closing 4 am. Breakfast 5. Home. Up at 1-2. Rinse and Repeat.
We actually had permanent partners we would often meet. We were single, they weren't but they just loved to get out and boogie and boogie they could. Great friends and the gents were always just that.
One of the best Girl Bands ever!
And how awesome that the women play those guitars, almost unheard of in the70s.
I was too young in 1978 to dance to this in clubs, but I do remember that at that time there would be late-night disco shows on the radio where deejays would play "disco mixes" or "disco versions" of current disco hits, including of this one, just extra-long versions of disco songs like this one extended out to, say, ten minutes and blended into the following songs like they'd be in a club. We used to dance around the house to those shows, and yes, people did dance really aerobically at the time.
The 70s and 80s were when industry was pushing great music not heard before
Their name came from Herp Albert's song"A Taste of Honey".
This was their first release and was their biggest hit remaining at Number 1 for 3 weeks. They were named Grammy"s Best New Artist for 1979.
A great tune with a blend of disco and funk. Absolutely powerful instruments, the bass line and the horns, just pull you in. Yes, Harri a groovy tune to dance to.🎶🎶🎶
Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Brandon for a great masterpiece. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
I love her palpard and the Tijuana Brass so much and that album whipped cream and other Delights was totally killer. But I think the history of the song is interesting, it was originally an instrumental part of a Broadway play from around 1960 and in the next few years before Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass covered it, many people did notable vocal versions of it, including the likes of Billy Dee Williams and Barbra Streisand and then of course the Beatles had a massively huge hit with it. One thing I love about the Herb Alpert instrumental version of it is that it mostly captured the feeling from the Beatles version of it but still as always the arrangement was impeccable and creative. I love when it had those stops and then there would be that long slow trombone draw along with that thumping kick drum to get back into it and then they throw that half step key change into it later in the song which really just pumps it up to another level.
@@stevedahlberg8680 Yes, that's my favourite part too for Herb Alpert's version.
Before I read that part of your comment I could hear the trombone and the drums in my head and now I'm going to listen to it. Lol
Of course I loved the harmonies in The Beatle's version. Great thoughts. 👍✌️🇨🇦
@@marybaillie8907 Ha, well said and yes I love the Beatles harmonies on that and I believe Paul McCartney is lead on that one and it's just so kinetic and catchy. But then so is the Tijuana Brass version which I as well may need to go listen to, it's been way too long! But like you, as soon as I even thought of their version of it, that feature of their arrangement immediately jumped into my head. I first heard that stuff when I was a little kid and so it had a huge impact on me and I think to this day has informed me as a musician throughout all the decades afterwards.
@@stevedahlberg8680 Omg. It was as beautiful as I remembered. Suddenly I'm on the shag carpet in front of the hi-fi with Dad blasting it. It's going on my walking Playlist. Thanks Steve.😊 👍✌️🇨🇦
@@marybaillie8907 Nice. I just listened to it again as well and now that I hear it they do a long trombone draw in another one of their songs but this one isn't a draw at all, it just punches in on that low note and holds it until the rest of the band comes in. Fantastic. Also love that walking bass, and the thing has that almost exaggerated swing to it that you heard now and then in music from that time. Especially the drums. And then after that key change, they add in the xylophone or marimbas or perhaps both doing that really cool descending line while everything else feels like it's always ascending and it's another fun layer of tension. Might as well listen to The Beatles version now as well. In fact I know that I used to listen to them back to back a lot. And the funny thing is, resting on the mantle above my fireplace leaned up against the wall are about 10 of my most iconic albums and for at least the last 5 or 6 months, whipped cream and other Delights has been the one on top on full display. I'm going to go ahead and paste in a link to the Herb Alpert version in case anyone else is reading this and is interested.

Really enjoyed your comments. This brought me back to my childhood. Wish we could go back.
I would be interested in your reaction to MARCELITO POMOY - The Prayer
I danced to this so much in high school and also slightly later in college years but back then I had never seen this footage and I had zero idea of that talent involved. For all I knew it could have been just session musicians on the recording or something but no, these guys killed. And I take huge exception to this idea that it's difficult for heavyset people to go off dancing, and I say this as a slender wiry dude, and not only from the point of view of someone who has been out dancing so many times over the course of my life but more so as someone who has performed in bands throughout my life including many that people regularly danced to, and I can remember saying as early as 20 years old that what is it about heavyset people that really know how to go off and swing it when they dance. But overall I just like the way everybody dances. I can look out across the dance floor and you'll have somebody skinny doing the funkiest jerkiest amazing kind of dancing and then you'll have some heavy set chick just swinging that ass and gyrating her body and just going nuts. Have you not ever seen footage of Chubby Checker? Laugh.
I Grew Up On This My Dad Made 4Track Mixed Tapes From Vinyl & We’d Dance All Night!!
Happy Halloween Harri. Enjoy the eye candy!!
In the 90s, one of the radio stations in my town would play disco on Saturday Night. I loved it. And this was one that I started learning about bass guitar. Can't help but move. This and Donna Summer "I feel love" we're my jams on Saturday. Then I turned the dial over to Professor Skank and reggae music the rest of the night.
You are right Harri Aint nothing sexier than Mz; Johnson on the bass;
Hey Harri .. I used to get mixed up between this song and Claudja Barry's 70s disco hit "Boogie Woogie Dancing Shoes" .. It had the words "Boogie oogie boogie woogie" in the chorus, so that probably explains why I confused the 2 songs .. Anyway, it's not a bad song at all if you want to check that one out too .. Very dancey indeed !
These were some badass beautiful women.
A great disco song to dance to, this was fire back in the 70's. You should also check out the studio version to get a clear understanding of the instrumentation which is incredible.
I never cared for disco except for a few exceptional songs, this being one of them. The Midnight Special was a treasure trove of great performances, rarely missed it. It kept me company working the overnight shift many times!
Love seeing these powerful women layin' it down! Truly impressive.
This is so good it’s almost too good, like I don’t deserve it It’s that good
Harri, would you please react to "A Taste of Honey" by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass?
Love your reactions, sometimes it just makes me rethink a way I looked at a song before
yeap..at 18, i remember getting up on the dance floor to this one many times! big hit! great workout! lol
Just realized that was Ozone from Breakin dancing in the front audience
Number one fan of Taste of Honey at eighteen.
Even after all these years Innever knew they played instruments.
Back in the day, if you weren't dancing to this you were probably in a coma or dead.
Thanks for the memories. Some of. these songs bring back some great ones.
Review “Funkytown” One of the best disco songs.
I'm 62 years old. I danced to this so many times in the club.
Looks like a nice Club!?
Harri - loving the music and the eye candy!
How old are you Harri? I was 18 in 1978, so old enough to dance with P plates. Loved the lead guitar personally; reminded me of Ernie Isley.
I was the ones who sent his video on. I was born in 77. I was thinking the exact same thing about the guitar sounding like "who's that lady".
This is probably the closest Harri has come to getting out of his seat to dance
love your reaction man and you have a really pleasant voice
Don't be envious just enjoy you get to experience a little taste of honey.
Yes, it seems like there were a lot less fat people back then compared to today on the dance floor or anywhere else for that matter.
those were two guitar slinging chicks
Respectfully disagree.
WOW, these two young ladies mastered the bass guitar and the lead guitar, Outstanding**********
you've heard this Harri ...
And they best people you ever want to meet.
A lot of coke back in those days.
I grew up on that song (mid-70s) - nvr knew the bad azz instrumentals were played by women! Cryin' tears of joy rn. U remember how it was: somehow I had nvr seen them on Midnight Express, Soul Train or Solid Gold (only ever heard this song on radio 😂). I just learned, Aug. '24, those were female artists on guitar. So thankful I grew up on 1967-1974 afros - I miss that swag so much. I'm undone. Can't wait to call 1 of my siblings, soon, to discuss how transcendent & cold A Taste Of Honey was. #Mindblown - 🤯 🔥
That could be a top 100 today.
That classic bop deserves a new school reboot. I knew the radio version by-heart so I appreciate that live version that much more. Alicia Keys-level skills by those women. Wow.
- Aug. 2024
I remember watching Don Kirshners midnight special . I forget the man’s name that produced the midnight special. I saw everyone on this show. K.C and the sunshine band to freaking Ted Nugent . It was awesome it was on Saturday nights. Man! This brings me back. I’m 60 years old and I can still boogie oogie oogie , just not as hard, lol.
Get down, boogey oogie oogie! I remember!
Love these Ladies!
Because of them, I learned to play Bass Guitar at School.
I never saw the Video, but my older sister had the 12" Single at the time, with them posing with their Guitars. 😎
Reminds me of another disco song with a groove, He's the greatest dancer from Sister Sledge.
We are Family. Sister Sledge
Having lived through the disco era-for every good song there were about a hundred bad ones-particularly when fading celebrities and artists tried to get in on the act-great for dancing but made for boring radio.
But bad ones fade into the ether so no problem there. And the same is true for every musical genre
@@personalcheeses8073 But also bad ones bubble up to the surface while good ones fade into the ether as well-it works both ways unfortunately. There's a lot of drek to wade through to get to the good at times.
💃💃💃💃💃💃👍♥️
Beautiful Ladies, one of the best funk songs ever.Hooe yer doing ok bro.
Hazel on lead, plays bass too.
🔥
sorry, not Real Boogie Woodie Music !!! Couldn't lift a CAN-CAN Skirt to it !!.
Dear Harri, I want to thank you from my heart for being so kind to me considering my health issues. I've worsened, unfortunately, so in about 2 days I will be unsubscribed. I barely have a blank week with no doctor appointments, and it's wearing on me. I'll miss all of the friends I made here (except the ones who will be glad to see me go, like Debbie, who never spoke to me for some reason). I have Congestive Heart Failure now, so my Cardiologist added another pill to my 12-pill arsenal. Life doesn't have much meaning, but my music will always be with me. Thanks for playing Nether Lands for me, that was my good-bye song. Take care, and may God be with you and your girls~Gin ❤🩹🙏
You're in my prayers, for what it's worth Ginny.
