American woman reaction by the American rock group The Guess Who.

This is an alternate intro to American Woman, and if you'd let the video run you would heard the regular arrangement. It's pretty long, running about 14 minutes in total. Randy Bachman breaks a string during a solo and manages to pull off a god-tier guitar swap with the assistance of an alert roadie. This was from the Running Back To Canada tour in 2000.
Right on
Was this the one where you could see the lightening storm heading towards them?
@@eyeonit469 Aye, this song was performed after about an hour break for the storm to pass over, thus the remark by Cummings about the crowd steaming.
I'm not sure if this is part of a concert/tour that was on the TV a number of years ago, but, it appears to be. Would have been nice had it not been cut off, although as he read, the person making the suggestion did say the intro to American Woman.
The Guess Who one of the best Canadian bands!
Yes, definitely, along with 'that singer' and his amazing pipes.
@@JK_Clarke I have never seen this intro before. Very nice.
Absolutely!
This is my hometown and we are so damn proud of The Guess Who. Rock on.
"Only in Winnipeg would the crowd stay" was a reference to the just-completed summer thunderstorm that had shut down the concert for 30 minutes due to fears of electrocution of the band. The well-drenched crowd just moved closer to the stage, perhaps to better share umbrellas ...
This was the intro to American Woman and you would have heard it if you kept on going. I really wanted to see this concert as this is in Winnipeg theirs and mine hometown but the tickets sold out so fast. I had seem them perform numerous times when they were younger. Burton Cummings has one of the best voices in rock even Robert Plant was impressed by his voice.
Cheers
Yes
Fabulous. Loved the intro into a great song. Randy and Burton back together.
The harmonica, guitars, the drums were just rocking. Really enjoyed this. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and JK Clark.
Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
He was actually voted one of the best vocalists.
Well deserved recognition❤❤❤
Robert plant was extremely influenced by Cummings voice. Going as far as to stay it was the voice of rock n roll.
This is the original band from their reunion tour
In their hometown of Winnipeg
Original bassist Jim Kale was replaced by Bill Wallace for the 2000-2003 reunion tour. Donnie McDougall was added as rhythm guitarist.
This takes me back love 💘 this ❤ 😍
This is NOT another song. This is an expanded version of the intro that was often cut from radio broadcasts of the song. The original album version has the intro, though not as extended as this one is. If you had not stopped the recording, you then would have heard the song you're so used to.
The reason Harri stopped the video was because I asked him to. The whole video is 14 minutes long, a bit too long to react to, yet I insisted this Intro was a blues classic on its own. Maybe by popular demand we can talk Harri into re-editing to include the rest of the song. Shall we?
@@JK_Clarke bad idea
@@mrsnookdeb Thanks for the input ... we can work it out.
I grew up with this great Canadian band. They had so many hits such as "These Eyes", "No Time", "Laughing", "Undun", "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" etc. Burton Cummings has a great voice. One of the best out there. Randy Bachman later left to form Bachman Turner Overdrive & had many hits. And Burton Cummings had a great solo career with lots of great songs. "American Woman" is not about a lady but more about a country (I don't want your war machines or your ghetto scenes).
That's why this intro is doubly-confusing; because it actually is about a lady Burton met. It really has not much in common with the original song's Lady, the Statue of Liberty. Nevertheless, its performance deserves recognition on its own merit; the entire group was musically magnificent, not to mention the accurate spelling at the end.
Love Burton's voice❤❤❤
@@JK_Clarke there are actually youtube interviews where Randy explains how this song came about. He isc9nec9f the greatest story tellers and he has the stories. It's the statue
Randy formed Brave Belt after he left The Guess Who, Brave Belt were Randy, Chad Allan and Robin Bachman, later Tim Bachman joined and Chad left, he was replaced by Fred Turner. After the second Brave Belt album the band changed their name to Bachman-Turner Overdrive.
My husband still blasts this song for me on drums lol
One amazing song!
I'm one of your fans from Winnipeg, Canada! Wish I had been at this concert by The Guess Who are one of our greatest exports to the world (along with Crash Test Dummies)! Love your channel!!!
I was very lucky to be at that concert!!
Tragically under rated band. Should have been bigger than Rush as the best band to come out of Canada.
A much better vocalist in BC. Rush play great music but I can’t listen to the vocals for long.
Winnipeg is in the house!
I saw them in concert in lawrenceburg Indiana fairgrounds and they played all the Bachman turner overdrive hits too so I got two for the price of one concerts.
The Great Burton Cummings
The Guess Who, and BTO are amazing. Love this stuff. They can keep Young , just give me some of this and a cold Molson.
Great song I got to see & hear because of you! Thanks!
I liked their performance of American Woman on the Midnight Special.
Amazing I love This Version.
First band I ever saw live. In Des Moines, Iowa.
Obviously the original from decades earlier is a must see/listen.
You MUST watch the entire video. Just incredible!
Love Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman. So glad they’ve started touring together again. Both are huge talents. Thanks for this Harri. 😊🇨🇦🇨🇦
Robert Plants favorite singer at one time
We love our boy Burton Cummings from Winnipeg and yes he wrote the American Woman.
Great choice JKClark. One of the great Canadian Bands. Thanks Harri for playing this longer version. It is fantastic. 🇨🇦🇺🇸🤴🇬🇧🇺🇦🔥🙃👍
The greatest imo. G’day from Tasmania!
You need to do the rest of the song !!!
Many times, during radio airplay of " American Woman " the intro of the song was ignored and not played. You are hearing a long version of the song's intro.
Hi, well it turns out that you licked clean the cake mixers beaters but did not stick around to enjoy the cake that you expecting to eat. I suggest listening to the remainder of this video that you have truncated. " Hey! "
I grew up in Winnipeg North End
Randy killed it..
My first concert 1971 Toronto
I was there near the front.I had pneumonia but didn’t care.Dollar for dollar one of the best shows ever and I’ve seen them all.The rain was strong and long.No one left.
This is also a more recent live version.
The original live version would have been early 1970 if not late 60s
Amazed Burton's voice was still that great! Harri, they were doing an extended more rockin version of the acoustic intro to the original.
Burton Cummings and Randy Bachmann never got the acclaim they deserved. Burton was also an excellent musician on several instruments.
You should have left it playing - that was just the intro! The Guess Who Live at the Paramount is a classic and has a similar intro to American Woman - my all time favorite!
Harry, I hope by now you have watched the next 8 minutes of this performance from Winnipeg. one of the best groups in rock and roll history. In 1969 or maybe 1970 they sold more albums than the Beatles. Total injustice that they are not in the Rock and Roll hall of fame
The was just about to change to the "American women "part when it was cut off. The album "live at the parament "has an even better version which is 16+minutes long. And that song runs into "Truckin off across the Sky" which is 7+ minutes long. Just an incredible piece of music. Please check it out.
Ya darn tootin’!
Burton starts off by saying "only in Winnipeg would the crowd stay." This was an outdoor concert that was interrupted by a fierce electrical storm and the show was brought to a halt. The fans didn't leave, they just stood there getting wet and when the lightning stopped, the band returned to the stage and continued the show. Most bands would have cancelled, but when they saw no one was leaving, they waited it out. Hometown crowd. Like everyone else who commented, I wish you'd have played the full song. The intro by itself is not really enough.
Thus past weekend was Canada’s Rock Fest in Grand Forks, BC (where I live!) & who should be playing on Friday’s line up - Burton Cummings & Randy Bachman ! April Wine, Steve Augeri (former lead singer of Journey), Snake Oil (90’s group)!! 👏👌😻💜🎵💎🥰 This festival is very hot, & popular in our corner of the world (right on the Canada 🇨🇦 & USA 🇺🇸 border ❣️😘
they were from Canada not America . When my wife first heard this song ( she's japanese ) she laughed her ass off. By the way never heard the live version.
That was super cool. I will use this as motivation to play more too! love the channel...
harnonica that is 😌
You need to to the live version on the Midnight Special. Really is worth a re-do.
Where is the rest of the song? This is the long alternative intro, but... here all the Canadians are... waiting so happy to hear the rest and... we didn't get it. LOL
🇨🇦 Another great Canadian band !
The lead singer is Burton Cummings and he went solo please give a reaction to Your Backyard and Break it to Them Gently 😀
My personal favorite is Burton's Break It To Them Gently. Will check to see if you already reviewed it. Have a wonderful day, Harri!
Robert Plant once said Burton was one his favorite singers.
The song wasn't over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Burton’s voice is as great as it was in 1969!
Do the full LIVE version from Live at the Paramount ....it is amazing...!!!
Harri ,I'd love to get your reaction The Guess Who ,Sour Suite .One of Burton's most beautiful ,heart felt songs . Cheers .Love your channel the best .
They put out the original and a jazzy one.
From the same concert try: "The Guess Who - Let it Ride & Takin' Care of Business". BTO's songs done by the Guess Who.
Man you have to listen to the rest of that! It is the one you are thinking of.
The Great White North sure turned out a great bunch of musicians. The Guess Who outsold The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in 1970, Burton Cummings is a fantastic singer and Randy Bachman lead guitar. fantastic music
Yeah, it's the intro. I read JK Clare's comment, and I get that this is what he was asking for. That's just fine and I loved watching it with everyone. I was waiting for the segue, though, I must admit. lol
Listen to Humble Pie, "30 days in the hole." off the album Smokin.
Awww HariBest! You needed to hear & watch the whole song... all 14:17 seconds worth. It's one of the greatest versions of this song ever recorded. The only one better is the American Woman (Live at the Paramount Theater, Seattle WA - May 1972) All 16:53 minutes! You missed out!
That was only half the video, the intro. They got into the actual song immediately after this.
The original song also starts off beat and evolves into the song, but most people have only heard the radio version that actually cuts out the beginning of the song
A Canadian treasure.
I can't wait to watch you play harmonica!!
Could be the greatest one chord song of all time
If you had listened for just a few more seconds you would have heard the song you know😁 When originally recorded, there was an intro of about 1:15, before the main song begins, which is often edited out. This is an extended jam, based on that original intro'😎
Supposedly this whole song was improvised from this riff while performing live.
This is a throwback to the original studio version of the song.
I'm 54 years old and had never played an instrument. When I was 45 I just kind of out of the blue one day decided to buy a harmonica. Today most people would agree that I'm pretty good, pretty good indeed. That to say you should absolutely start playing your harmonica. I about drove my wife insane there for a while, now she'll bring my harmonica to me
Bachman and Cummings are on tour this summer.
My first ever concert
They look a bit older than when I saw them in concert here but still sound great.
Harri - If you had let the video keep going for just a couple of more seconds... you would have heard the band go into the regular version of "American Woman". You would love the live version of this... so you should check out the dull version.
American Woman has a blues intro on the album. This was an extended version of the intro, but it feeds right into the American Woman you were expecting. If you watched the concert longer, you'd have seen the hit song next.
The reason Harri stopped the video was because I asked him to. The whole video is 14 minutes long, a bit too long to react to, yet I insisted this Intro was a blues classic on its own. Maybe by popular demand we can talk Harri into re-editing to include the rest of the song. Shall we?
Un recognizable.
I would be excited again if you give a listen to Kaylee Rodgers and her special needs classmates singing Hallelujah Thanks
I just found it. She's very sweet, and I enjoyed every minute.
I've never seen this (very extended) live version of the original INTRO to "American woman... I kind-of want to hear what came after...
Oh no
You cut off the Song
This was only the intro
This is the original American Woman, by Burton Cumming and The Guess Who!!!❤❤❤
He has to say a m e r I c a n
Original version and the best version, Lenny Kravitz also did a great cover
From the same live album, try Running Back to Saskatoon.
Song was in protest to the American War Machine. Not at all about a woman
There is a good how to play harmonica book by Johnny Gindick. I looked him up and he's on RUclips.
I saw them do this live just a couple of weeks ago. They can still rock out pretty good for a couple of old farts. I was sitting next to a guy who came all the way to Canada from Florida for the concert. I asked him where his American woman was and he said his Wife couldn't come. I said it was just as well because they were told to stay away.
If you want to hear the original radio played version, listen to the studio recording. I've seen another live version, and it just doesn't have the same sound and vocal, what they put into it.
I'm a fan of records. Look up the American Woman, short version. This prolonged bluesy jam has little to do with their hit song. According to Cummings, the band started a riff while Burton was backstage. He apparently ad libbed the lyrics on the spot.
Harri, to play this on harmonica you'll need a G Diatonic or you'll be in the wrong key.
Keep goin!!!
Live at the Paramount album they do an awesome version of this. Burton does an amazing vocal aerobic. Unfortunately, there's now video, but sometime you've gotta check it out. Peace
Reunion Tour.
This is the closest version to Live at the Paramount that I've seen. But live at the Paramount is still better. Please check it out. I've suggested it a few times already.
Here’s your Burton Cummings!!
if you haven't done it yet, you'd probably love No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature
What the hey, Harri. This is just the intro. A bit more elaborate than the album version but if the video had gone on a few seconds longer Randy Bachmann would have started the riff you are familiar with.
Need to listen to Lenny Kravitz version of this….it’s awesome 👏
Harry, please finish the song man they break into American Women the one u know.Old baby boober.continue the song
