"You know things are getting serious when Burton Cummings breaks out the cowbell." Lol!!! We Canadians are very proud of The Guess Who, and will tell anyone willing to listen that they were as good as any British band of the '60s. This live performance, as the ultimate "dad band", gives us a fleeting glimpse of their glory. Thanks for another great analysis video! You're an honorary Canadian now!!!
I would love to hear Mr. Fil's analysis of at least one other unique & iconic hit by these guys, e.g. "Undun".. Randy's jazz style guitar construction combined with a vocal performance for the ages by B.C, with that expressive flute 'bridge' in there as well. I've always admired the creativity & uniqueness this band produced. And I agree, though they did achieve fame & some prodigeous success, they did not receive the lasting appreciation they merit. Especially so in Burton's case..
Guess Who is definitely in my top five finest groups of all time. Randy was the heart and Burton was the soul. They had phenomenal talent. I think they captured the essence the late sixties and early 70s as well or better than most. Songs like American Woman, These Eyes, No Time, Undun and many others , hit after hit.
Burton, def one of the top voices of ALL time!! Awesome range tone and strength..beautiful..love that man. Thanks so much Fil for this one..love your shows
Thx Fil for doing Guess Who. Used to cruise around in my '63 Impalla listening to Guess Who & 3-Dog Night constantly on my 8-Track. Great memories. TYVM..RAWK!!!
A '63 Chevy Impala and an 8 track tape? You have my sympathy. For a while I drove my dad's '67 Impala, really light with a 327 cu. In. V8. I mean to tell you that thing was a rocket sled on rails when you floored it! I put in my own cassette player and speakers. That ride was sweet!
One of my favorite rock bands! Randy’s kids refused to believe he was a rock star, until they were inducted into the Canadian hall of fame. 😂. Kids will keep you grounded. Love it. Thanks Fil.
Some tunes I'm not crazy about, but I've got to listen to Fil's thoughts. By the time he's done pointing out things I've never considered, I give the song another less-critical listen. Lots of respect for Fil's business acumen and easy, likeable, disposition. Always a good vibe here!

They found someone in the crowd that had recorded it and used the tape to learn the lyrics as they couldn't remember them, but they knew they had something.
Randy Bachman had a concert in Edmonton Klondike Days Exhibition where the whole crowd was silent listening to him play...he mesmerized them all, including me. Finally, he had say something and ask, "Are you alright?" They rushed the stage and danced standing on the chairs cheering to watch him and his band play their classic songs
Randy Bachman has told the story of him skipping school at 16yrs old in Winnipeg to go down the street to hang out with, and learn guitar from his first teacher, Lenny Breau. That influence is where the jazz licks in songs like "She's Come Undone" came from.
@@gvbezoff Sorry. I should have looked it up. I was going from memory of an album I used to borrow around 1970, and probably noticed the weird spelling then. I think it was on the radio that I heard Randy talk about meeting up with Lenny Breau in the early '70's and excitedly telling him that his band had a #1 hit, and Lenny asked him "Yeah, but are you playing any jazz?", lol. My favourite songs of Randy's are the jazz-influenced "Looking Out for #1" (the solo will always be one of my favourites, there's nothing else like it) and Blue Collar. Burton Cummings commented that when Undun was on the charts (1968?) with its jazz sound, there was nothing else like it out there.
Randy was totally “in the moment”, that sums it up quite well. He’s another great guitarist that is under recognized. He can lay it down as he did here and I think he also has an extensive knowledge of jazz chords and progressions. Thank you for showing that, I really enjoyed it.

There was allot of emotion and putting it all on the line for this specific show. Playing for their hometown of Winnipeg in front of some family and friends. Weather was horrible this night and they stopped the show halfway through. This was the first song they played after the delay,it was all or nothing. May 9 1970 it hit #1 on billboard,50 years ago today.
Burton Cummings still rocks after all these years. What great songs this band had, No Time and Undone, to name a couple of others. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Fil! 👍
Randy Bachman is one of the most underrated guitarists in rock music, he shreds his guitar in this song and the playing with a drum stick is a Randy speciality.
This is the one time I do agree when somebody uses the word'"underrated"between the Guess who and Bachman-Turner overdrive this guy should be somewhere in the Hall of Fame!

Randy Bachman does a weekend radio show called Vinyl Tap on CBC radio one. Usually plays music from a theme and tells stories about the industry. Very entertaining to anybody interested. It isn't podcast because of copyrights on the music, but is repeated several times each weekend.
Sydnick I think one of the most amazing things about Randy is that he is one of the few artists who remembers the sixties through to the twenty tens. He personally knows so many artists and shared the stage with so many as well.
I have been a fan of the Guess Who, Burton Cummings, Brave Belt, and BTO for decades. This performance was great. The tightness of the band, the grooves, and the singing. Much appreciate your sharing of the backstories of the players and the songs as well as your analyses. I had no idea that this tune was born from a jam! Cool! Thanks for sharing, Fil. Rock! 🤘👍😊💕
Whoa, i remember that track from wayyyyyyy back, i really, really enjoyed this Fil! I was smiling from ear to ear, this performance was off the chain! I love Cow Bell, lots of it, 'The Guess Who' are a fabulous band! Just sitin' here rockin' out in my chair, brings back so many fine musical memories! Thanks for this video! You did an AWESOME job on this analysis! RAWK! /M\
Thank you again, Fil. What (great) memories this song brings back! I am glad others have aged along with me. Older & wiser I'm sure. So many artists just get better & better with age & experience.
Another interesting thing about this 2000 tour is that the original Guess Who members had just gotten together to do this after many many years of being apart. I went to one of the concerts on that tour. They were 30 whatever years older but the performances were as tight was if they had been playing together all along.
Man I love your analysis Fil! This is my home town band -- lol ... this was recorded in Winnipeg (where they are from) on New Year's Eve 2000 and the show had been rain delayed with a serious storm but the crowd all stayed and when the rain stopped out came the band to finish the show. Truly an epic performance.
This will be known as the best reaction of all time that I've ever seen or heard and you know of them where others I've watched they didn't even know anything about him so this even makes it better thank you so much..
My mother was the biggest Burton Cummings fan. The first 10 or so years of my life was all The Guess Who and Burton Cummings music until I got a paper route and was able to buy my own music (The first albums I got was Metallica's Kill 'Em All, Iron Maiden Piece of Mind and Ozzy Osbourne Speak of the Devil). But ya mom was all about the Canadian rock, April Wine, Chilliwack, The Guess Who. Randy Bachman has a radio show on the CBC which of course she listened to religiously... Great vid Fil... Rock \m/
I love the surprise of what the night's analysis video will be!! It's so cool to have the music by a band or artist I already love enhanced by new awareness of what in the world is really going on. The Guess Who are already major favorites, but I never saw a long improvised piece before...big gang of fun! Thanks, Fil, this was spot on.
So great to see the original members back together for this concert (perhaps a few over a couple years)! Over three decades after they began the journey! Winnipeg, Manitoba's Finest
Randy Bachman gives me hope. Those kinds of sounds from a guy playing with such small guitar hands. When I'm stretching to get those bar chords with my wee hands, sometimes I go, "If Randy can do it, I can do it."
Ya gotta love watching a bunch of pros having so much fun. This is why live music is so good. Its like the kids are out playing. Off the cuff creativity you can't afford to do in the studio
Btw, Phil, I saw Randy Bachman playing with Ringo and his All Starr Bands (if you ever get a chance, go see them! I’ve seen many, and they are ALWAYS GREAT!), and RB did two songs: “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet” and “Takin’ Care of Business”….omg, he was outstanding! That guy can really play, and sing, and he went back and forth across the stage/moved like Jagger! This is not a small man, but he was everywhere, and WOW, WHAT A SOUND!! As long as I live I will never forget that night and that performance by the incredibly talented Randy Bachman!! Ringo and the rest of his All Starr band were pretty good, too! 😉 A great night all the way around! Don’t miss Ringo and his lads, and sometimes Ladies, if they are ever out your way….they are always fantastic! ❤️
They were playing in front of their home town, Winnipeg. There's a whole series of songs from this concert called the Running Back Thru Canada tour if you're interested in more great music. Still the greatest band to ever come out of Canada.
I love “The Guess Who” and Burton Cummings. I’m Canadian/American 🇨🇦🇺🇸 and these guys are STILL great after all these years. Burton now works as a Disc Jockey at a Canadian radio station and he loves it! I call Burton quite often. Another great video, Fil. Wings of Pegasus ROCKS!
This was in my brothers crypt collection. Imagine most of the classic albums ever made locked in a basement for years and years and then re-discovered! "Hendrix in the West", The Doors first five albums, "Flowers" by the Rolling Stones, "Revolver" by the Beatles, "Quadrophenia" by the Who, "The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys" by Traffic and "The Best of the Guess Who", etc... Gold Mine!!!
After so many years and a lot of water gone under the bridge, Randy can still play the main lead solo pretty well exactly as he did on the studio recording of this song. Not to many players seem to do this.
That golden voice is still rocking it today in his 70's. Randy is a superb guitarist. They were rocking it in the 60' s amazing longevity. Thank you for this analysis of yet another great Canadian sound. Thanks again.
Another great thing about Randy is, he's a walking encyclopedia, or Who's Who of music. He's been playing and touring so long, that he knows, or knew, EVERYBODY in the rock world. He's got great stories about just about anyone you can think of. Not JUST rock either. For instance, he took lessons from the great jazz guitarist Lenny Breau when they were neighbours.
This is so true. I follow Randy's 'Bachman & Bachman' youtube channel, (hosted with his son Tal) and his experience and knowledge are incredible. A lifetime of hard work at your craft will give you that.
Now we are firing on all cylinders Fil .... more classic rock ! Man the last week and a half you've hit it out of the park ! Randy was definitely "taking care of business" that night 😉 Thank you Fil for the sweet tunes & the analysis 😎🎸 I'm so glad I dropped in for my nightly dose of Rock-n-Roll 🕪🎛🔊
My friend and I hitchhiked to a Guess Who concert when we were 15 years old saw them in a club with maybe 150 people one of my first rock bands.Years later I moved to Kitchener Ontario and I was listening to his radio show on CBC when he spoke of the genesis of this song at the local curling club turns out it was a mile down the street from where I was living, not sure why but it made me proud of the local music scene once I started to learn some history.
"The Guess Who" one of my favorite bands with a roster of top 40 hits back in the days. Randy Bachman's solo here has a bit of Roy Clark playing going on. I wonder if that tape still exist today? another great analysis and break down on all the players and what it is to play live. thanks for this one Fil.
These guys are one of the greatest rock groups ever. I love their songs. Great guitar playing and excellent singing. I would love to have seen them in concert. Fil, you are so cool analyzing these old classics. It is wonderful hearing you talk about the music. You are so cute too. ❤️🌹❤️
First band I saw in concert, in Flint, MI. They were great, but it was after Randy had left the band. Dominic Troiano was playing lead (hell of a guitar player, RIP). Burton's voice has always been great.
This is another one of my favourite reactionalyses of yours which is why I have returned to it. I said pretty much all that I had to say in my earlier comment but, I did leave one thing out. Watching Randy play his free form solo, I'm left with, "OF COURSE you play a guitar with a drumstick, you silly person!"
Great choice of video and analysis of The Guess Who, Fil. I was living in the States at the time when I bought Wheatfield Soul. Friends loved it, and I would say smugly, “Yeah, they’re from Winnipeg.” Their typical response was, “Where?” Burton said in an interview about the origins of American Woman, “it was all stream of consciousness at the moment stuff …it was all just spur- of- the- moment.” We can all thank the Gods of Rock for that kid with the cassette recorder. In a twist of irony, I now live in Canada,
Need more cowbell! Lol. They still sound great. Guess Who was one of the best bands in the industry back in the day, and there were LOTS of great bands back then. They had it all: Great songs, great vocalist, great band. Thanks, Fil, for another fantastic video! 💙
Wow, that's weird. I haven't heard this song in forever, and I had it randomly pop in my head earlier today. Now Fil's doing a video on that same song! 😃
Randy has such great stories because he can remember everything as he was a teetotaller. Check out his story about Sunshine of your love came about. Classic.
Randy was once offered a million dollars for use of Taking Care of Business in a beer company ad. He declined, based on his own personal ethics. Years later, when an offer was put forward by another company (office supplies), he accepted. He didn't go wrong with aligning his own values to his business decisions, and people respect him for that.
I love how Bachman drives his solo like he's flooring the gas pedal of a 67 Chevelle Anyone who hasn't heard The Guess Who's 'Live at the Paramount' album is missing out on one of the greatest live albums every made. FIL! I was watching this again and thinking about the guitarists who were in this band... Kurt Winters and Dominic Troiano... You should do a series on analyzing each guitarist who played in the same band. It would be interesting since most successful transitions involved the guitarist and the band having to adapt their styles to fit. A lot of people think it is more like when Blackmore left Deep Purple to form Rainbow and don't realize the difference is that Blackmore built the band around his ideal rather than stepping into a band with an established dynamic...
I'll never get tired of hearing this! They are rocking through any senior moments, for sure, it sounds the same as way back when !! Woo !! Alright!!! I've got concert fever now!! Lol. Thanks Fil !
Drummer Gary Peterson is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. I thanked him for doing it for so long for all of us fans. At the end of the show, he walked up to me at the front of the stage and handed me a drum stick! He now lives in North Carolina.
Burton Cummings now lives in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He lived in LA for decades working in the music business but I think things got so crazy in LA that he just had to make a bee-line back to the prairies. Says he loves it there, a small city of about 40,000, because they had so many great experiences playing all over southern Saskatchewan back in the 1960s. You should react to "Running Back to Saskatoon," the live version. It really sizzles.
oh is that where he is now? I knew Burton Cummings moved back to Canada... but I didn't think he'd head back to Winterpeg. lol. We're so proud of The Guess Who!
@@bccabernet Moose Jaw is marginally warmer than Winnipeg, ha, ha! I grew up in Regina and Moose Jaw is just 25 miles west. But the chinooks in the winter would only make it as far as Moose Jaw, and then die before they made it to Regina. That would frustrate us as kids to no end!
That was a great analysis of this classic. Thanks Fil. This performance, all these years later, was epic! We played this song in my band when it first was released. For me, a lead guitarist, it was eagerly awaited as it is such a great song for improvisational solos. Of course I'm no Randy Bachman but I got to stretch my playing as much as I could with this song. 'American Woman" was, of course, one of the crowd favorites, getting everyone in the clubs and bars up and rocking out.🤓 -dave
Hi Fil, Really enjoyed your analysis. I usually watch RUclips on my PS4 and it doesn't have a comments section. Bill White you Sylvia’s friend ?
Charlotte Moreau Don’t know a Sylvia.
Bill White thanks
Bill White hey
Are you me?
My mother was the biggest Burton Cummings fan. The first 10 or so years of my life was all The Guess Who and Burton Cummings music until I got a paper route and was able to buy my own music (The first albums I got was Metallica's Kill 'Em All, Iron Maiden Piece of Mind and Ozzy Osbourne Speak of the Devil). But ya mom was all about the Canadian rock, April Wine, Chilliwack, The Guess Who. Randy Bachman has a radio show on the CBC which of course she listened to religiously... Great vid Fil... Rock \m/
As usual Fil, excellent review of a really great band.
Love your interpretation of this iconic song 🎵 💜
Randy Bachman gives me hope. Those kinds of sounds from a guy playing with such small guitar hands. When I'm stretching to get those bar chords with my wee hands, sometimes I go, "If Randy can do it, I can do it."
Ya gotta love watching a bunch of pros having so much fun. This is why live music is so good. Its like the kids are out playing. Off the cuff creativity you can't afford to do in the studio
They are both FANTASTIC!! ❤
A great night all the way around!
You ROCK PegasusMan
Thanks!
Chas R hey
I love “The Guess Who” and Burton Cummings. I’m Canadian/American 🇨🇦🇺🇸 and these guys are STILL great after all these years. Burton now works as a Disc Jockey at a Canadian radio station and he loves it! I call Burton quite often. Another great video, Fil. Wings of Pegasus ROCKS!
Awesomeness, plus Ive always loved Burton Cummings voice.
Yeah Burton had such a pure, powerful voice.
The Guess Who Canada's finest!
Robert Plant was a big fan of Burton's vocals.
It's better than the studio version IMHO :)
My friend and I hitchhiked to a Guess Who concert when we were 15 years old saw them in a club with maybe 150 people one of my first rock bands.Years later I moved to Kitchener Ontario and I was listening to his radio show on CBC when he spoke of the genesis of this song at the local curling club turns out it was a mile down the street from where I was living, not sure why but it made me proud of the local music scene once I started to learn some history.
...and now it is a Home Hardware store, with a plaque inside commemorating the event.
That guitar riff just takes me back. Classic greatness.
Every time I see randy play, he impresses me
Guess Who was popular when my wife and I were dating (yes, I'm that old) and their music still sounds great today. Thanks for this video.
Just one of those songs, can't help but singing along to. After decades of hearing it, still holds up. Timeless. Good choice for review.
One of my favorite songs and bands from my teenage years. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on them Fil.
Randy Bachman is an unbelievable guitarist, hope to see him live someday. Saw Burton Cummings some months ago and he still can sing!
My favorite band when I was a kid. Nothing but raw talent. By the way young people, this is live.
Fil, I love this song! I really enjoy it more when you get into it and give us that smile! I always watch for that! Thank you!
The Guess Who good old rock'n and roll, cruising music. Wicked switches guitar and doesn't miss a beat.
The Guess Who were amazing !!
These guys are one of the greatest rock groups ever. I love their songs. Great guitar playing and excellent singing. I would love to have seen them in concert. Fil, you are so cool analyzing these old classics. It is wonderful hearing you talk about the music. You are so cute too. ❤️🌹❤️
I saw these guys with Joe Crocker at the NY State Fair right after they got back together. Best concert I ever saw! RIP Joe.
Thank you for mentioning Garry's work!! He's just a metronome in this performance!!
Great to see them having a rockin good time.
One of the best ever guitarists.
Growing up The Guess who were one of my favorite bands. And Burton's come back story is amazing. Thanks Fil.
Randy Bachman..... one of the best (and most under rated) guitarists ever.
The Guess Who put Winnipeg on the map. Proud guys all from Winnipeg.
In a twist of irony, I now live in Canada,
Not ironic at all. You came home.
😃
An absolute killer performance and a great analysis. The old school was a good school 😊
Hi Fil! Another FANTASTIC review!!!
It got so intense that one guitar just couldn't handle it!!!😎😎
Thanks again Fil I always loved these guys
Randy has such great stories because he can remember everything as he was a teetotaller. Check out his story about Sunshine of your love came about. Classic.
Randy was once offered a million dollars for use of Taking Care of Business in a beer company ad. He declined, based on his own personal ethics. Years later, when an offer was put forward by another company (office supplies), he accepted. He didn't go wrong with aligning his own values to his business decisions, and people respect him for that.
Sheer brilliance! Thank you for this Fil! Kudos to the one who made the suggestion. Rock.
I love how Bachman drives his solo like he's flooring the gas pedal of a 67 Chevelle
Anyone who hasn't heard The Guess Who's 'Live at the Paramount' album is missing out on one of the greatest live albums every made.
I loved it, you did an outstanding job sharing your knowledge, Professor Fill!
'American Woman" was, of course, one of the crowd favorites, getting everyone in the clubs and bars up and rocking out.🤓

Burton is still playing live gigs and he and Bachman have a tour planned. was supposed to be this summer but it was postponed due to Covid.
Hi Fil,
Really enjoyed your analysis. I usually watch RUclips on my PS4 and it doesn't have a comments section. So I am making an effort to go into the video a second time just so I can tell you how much I appreciate your video. You have an excellent understanding of all the aspects of musicianship, and your communication of your ideas is first rate. Your videos are so good I am beginning to think of you as part of the musical performance itself by the way you add to the music by your insights and expressions. Keep them coming. Rock on.
Thanks Peter!
It's very surreal to go to a Burton Cummings concert in the Burton Cummings Theatre in his home town.
