  • Coming up… Two of rock and roll’s greatest storytellers Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings formerly of the 70s band the Guess Who share the hilarious story of writing a #1 double sided hit… American Woman and No Sugar tonight. The two hits came from different experiences … One came when the Randy Bachman, who was not from the United States visited Haight Ashbury for the 1st time… He witnessed a tough guy get cut down to size by his lady… She cussed him out in front of onlookers and said a phrase that this guitarist had never heard but he turned it into a #1 hit. The other song came to the band on the spot when they were playing a show. Randy Bachman was vamping on a something and Burton Cummings spit out random lyrics and luckily a bootlegger was recording it because it became massive. The double interview with these legends is next on Professor of Rock

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs. This is a Really funny story “So far on this channel, we’ve heard a lot of great stories from Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman from legendary band The Guess Who. Both are phenomenal song tellers. .. if you will… Well today is no exception today we have an interview with both of them where they tell the story of one of the biggest double a-side number one hits Ever… No Sugar Tonight and American Woman. Now we’ve never had a feature on No Sugar… We had Burton’s side of America Woman but not Bachman’s So today is all new. First of all no Sugar Tonight is a medley…It’s actually No Sugar Tonight / New Mother Nature and was the B- Side of the American Woman Single without the New Mother Nature section….but then the single was officially relapsed as American Woman SLASH Non Sugar Tonight and peaked at #1 in both America and Canada for 3 weeks. So technically both were #1 hits… Just like the Beatles used to do. It’s a lost art….
Well No Sugar Tonight came from a hilarious incident that Randy Bachman witnessed when a tough guy got absolutely cussed out by his girlfriend in front of a bunch of onlookers. Randy heard her rant and it was so good he quickly turned it into a number one hit. Hear the story first hand next. and then American Woman came to the band when they were playing a live show.
Randy Bachman was just messing around with a riff between songs and Burton jumped on stage and started rapping nonsense words… They knew it was going to be huge from the audience’s reaction but after the show they had forgotten parts of it. Luckily a young kid who was illegally bootlegging the show recorded it. Find out how they tracked him down and did this classic hit. & why Singer Burton Cumming was pissed off at a change that was made on the double sided #1 hit. Also not to add insult to injury but The Guess Who is another great band that has been shut out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Boomtown Rats I Don't Like Mondays-UK number 1. Shocking topic then and now. The way Geldof paused at Live Aid at a specific line in the chorus gave the song a whole different and emotionally charged meaning on that momentous day in July 1985 in the context of famine relief, the purpose of the concert.
Abba Knowing Me Knowing You/ Dancing Queen UK number ones
Buggles Video Killed The Radio Star UK number one.
Clive Dunn Grandad UK number one. Not sure how it landed in America.

TRUTH! Apparently among the criteria is how danceable the artist's music is, what??? It's the " rock n roll" not the "disco" hall of fame. David Clayton Thomas of Blood Sweat andTears, Burton Cummings, and John Fogerty had the most immediately recognizable voices of the 70's.

It’s not a joke, its a commercial enterprise to make money exploiting the public’s interest in Rock and Roll.
In fact, it is a perfect testament to the Music Industry and the exploitation of Rock and Roll. So everyone in the HOF are the ones they can get people to want to come and see. Some are great bands, but only if they were also commercial successes. Some are just great commercial successes.
If you wanted a HOF of bands that embodied the true spirit of Rock and Roll instead of the commercialization of Rock and Roll, it would fail. Because it would be, by its very nature, a sell out. Just like the vast majority of bands who wanted desperately to “make it big” with commercial success instead of striving for greatness for the pure love of the music.
So no, the HOF is a perfect representation of the exploitation of Rock and Roll and how the people with the money make the rules.

about 7 years ago our label had a CMW showcase at a dingy little punk club in Toronto. All of the bands were more of a smooth synth-pop, really light stuff except us, who were blasting trebly amps and head banging. Right before we got on stage someone said "holy crap that's Randy Bachman". He stood near the bar watching our set and didn't move an inch the whole set. It was an awful show and kind of hilarious that THAT was the one he saw. Oh well ...

I've heard Paul McCartney has had so many experiences (LSD, maybe?) that he doesn't know reality from fantasy after all these years. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, even though his three bandmates swore he was addled.
Randy Bachman's Mormon underpinnings bring truth to everything he says...even to the point of creating the Bachman-Turner Overdrive from the ruins of Brave Belt, just to show his contemporaries that stone-cold-sober rockers could beat the best. "Hey You" was his not-so-subtle dig at his former bandmate Burton Cummings - who'd previously stated, publicly, that "a bunch of Bible-thumpers" NEVER would achieve success in the rock-&-roll world.
I've stumbled upon a website wherein I can listen to Bachman's "Vinyl Tap" archived broadcasts whenever I please. I agree with Mr. Simpson - Bachman is a storyteller for the ages. I'm also pleased to see that Messrs Cummings and Bachman have repaired their friendship. Also, kinda curious to see what happens with their joint lawsuit against Messrs Peterson and Kale, regarding the right to perform their own works on stage in concert.

Both of these guys, and their bands, are treasures. I interviewed Burton on his first tour, have seen them together, with BTO, etc. But I introduced my father, then 79, to Burton in 1985 backstage. I came back 10 minutes later and they're talking about Irish history. Before then my dad said all modern (post-1920s) music was "screaming". Afterward, he enjoyed listening to anything by Burton Cummings and totally changed his mind on modern singing and music. He said to me "he can really sing" -- he had been turned off by Sinatra, "he just talks"... Thanks for giving Randy and Burton their due here. I know these guys years in and out and haven't heard you get anything wrong, while hearing new stuff and going to the horses's mouth for the facts. Solid. In 1970 The Guess Who outsold the Beatles, the first artist to do so since 1964... but Jan Wenner blocked them from the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame... let's get them in!

I'm from America and love the bonds that the Canadian bands have remain strong still today. We have some amazing bands down here who remained very down-to-earth. Typically East Coast Metal formed a very tight Brotherhood that still stands. Old Bridge militia didn't form up because of Metallica like many think. They were invited out to East Coast to give them the kick-start they needed,& they turned their back & screwed over the many that help them. All just kept the attitude of helping one another here on the East Coast that much stronger and for a long time it remained unjaded. Truly had a closeness with many of the Bands from back then. I see a similar kinship with bands from Canada. Maybe has a lot of it has to do with growing up pretty broke, unlike many musicians from the West Coast. For the most part Metallica were made up of members that didn't have a lot of money. & 1 who did ultimately ruined the band and was the biggest part of screwing over two of the greatest Souls who put out everything to help them, Marsha & Jon Zazula! Who only finally broke even like a year before their deaths, only because of a book he/they put out. And even then they were classy enough not to throw many harsh truths out there. Yet those in the know, now. I don't want to turn into all that. For years, bands that don't get involved in the drugs, at least two bad and help one another out stand apart and stronger and so many others. Public really needs to start getting together more and petitioning for more of a say, beyond the lil bit that has been given only more recently. More say is still needed! Petition the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and start telling them who needs to be in! Time for at least 50% the inductees to be named by the people!

For me, one of your best programs ever. These songs have never left my mind since first being heard.
Numerous LIVE versions of both that just heighten the hype and love for both songs..
These and numerous other hits should have put the Guess Who into the R&RHOF. Too bad the R&RHOF is only in the business to satisfy their own egos....
    Thanks to you Professor...

They have always been in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to me. I always loved hearing those songs they never get old and I have even gotten to hear the band twice in concert

They are my second favorite Canadian rock band. Both are great sungs and both have great stories. I can't believe they aren't in the HOF. That's criminal.

What a great story! I always loved those two songs and now I know the difference between it and others is in the key of F-sharp! Cool having the two artists telling their own takes. You Rock, Professor 😉❤

Guess Who...one of the greatest bands of the 70's...and they should be in the RR Hall of Fame. BTW Randy....that lady's comment can be heard on lots of corners across America. 😅
