- Coming up, two legends and world-class storytellers share the story of one of the biggest radio songs ever. These Eyes was the first big hit written by Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings of the Guess Who. Guitarist Randy Bachman went to pick up a girl for a date and she wasn’t ready, so he sat downstairs waiting, and there happened to be an old piano there, so he wrote this little song in a few minutes. He later took it over to the singer’s house who changed one key lyric… It put this legendary band on the map. As a classic of the late 60s and early 70s, both Randy and Burton tell the story of this classic rock standard.

We’ve had Randy Bachman on the show a few times and as you know he’s one of the best storytellers in rock. Well, today we have his counterpart Burton Cummings who wrote some of the greatest songs even while in THE GUESS WHO.
Obviously, known best for their Classic Rock mega-hit American Woman, they had 14 top 40 hits here in America. First, the band was called Chad Allan and the Reflections, and they recorded their first song by going into this studio and paying the janitor 35 bucks to go take a nap so that they had full rein of the studio. So they recorded a cover of a song by Johnny Kid and the Pirates called Shaking All Over.
When they sent it to the record labels, one loved it and wanted to release it, but the label told the band they had to change their name because there were already groups with the name the reflections and so they tried the name the expressions but that was taken too so according to Randy Bachman, when their label sent their single Shaking All over out they put it on a white label with the name guess who? So that’s how they got their name. It also didn’t hurt that some rumors started that the guess who was a mystery supergroup that had brian jones and George Harrison in the band. This led to their first hit. Then Chad Allan left the group and they stole Burton Cummings from a rival band called the Deverons. which broke up the only other great band in their area so the band got together and started writing music and getting their band in place…
and that’s where our story starts with both Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings sharing the story of the song that put the Guess Who on the map and has become one of the most played songs in radio history. These Eyes. It’s coming up next.
Poll: Who is your pick for the greatest rock and roll hall of fame snub right now?
FOREIGNER!!!
Thin Lizzy or Iron Maiden
Foreigner isn’t? Crikey! I’ll also vote for Foreigner. To be fair I have no idea who is and isn’t in the hall of fame.
Toto. Hands down. The talent in that band…whoo!
All of them. Jethro Tull to be sure.
My high school aged granddaughter was visiting and I started playing The Guess Who, Lovin' Spoonful, Turtles and The Cyrkle. She fell in love with this era and that's all she wants to listen to on her visits. I'd say she has pretty good taste
That's great to hear!
The psychedelic era of music was amazing!
I gave my 13-year-old daughter a turn table last year. She listened to every one of my old 60s 70s and 80s albums (About 250) She loves the classic 60s the most. It warms my heart.
@@brianmason9361 great music is definitely not generational, it just keeps on keeping on. My granddaughter thinks Tommy James hung the moon
@@brianmason9361 not just introducing her to great music, but the best way to listen to it. It warms my heart too!
I danced with my mom to These Eyes at my wedding almost 30 years ago. She passed away shortly after that, but whenever I hear this song it transports me back. To this day, it still chokes me up a little.
It’s a very emotional song. So sorry for your loss.
Sorry for your loss. My mom loved the Guess Who as well.
God Bless her Man... 🙏
F the RRHF. They have nuthin'.
Sorry for your loss my friend. Mo moms going to be 81, and dad going to be 80 (I’ll be 60) in a few months. I’m American living in Australia for nearly 20 years now. I’m dreading the call my brother will make to me one day. I’ve been in combat, as an army Ranger and this has me more terrified then that time in my life.
Randy and Burton both seem genuinely grateful and still excited about their library of classics.
And witty as hell too!
They should. Those were stand out classics
F the RRHF. They have nuthin'.
R.I.P. Randy.
@@carolharris2357 Randy is alive & kicking...currently on tour with his son Tal
Burton gets my vote for one of the top ten male vocalist of the era in rock. Man, what pipes.
I agree. He can really kill it.
"Pitch PERFECT"
Totally agree!! gawd, I love Burton Cummings' voice!
agreed
Stand Tall
The Guess Who were my favorite band in middle school. Our parents really didn't want us listening to rock. But we listened at our friends' houses and on school outings. Then we snuck an album to keep at home. When my brother got a car, we bought an 8-track and listened in there. Their music was pure gold and I still love it!
The Guess Who are a criminally under-rated band. They were huge in the late 60s and early 70s. I would dare say they are Canada's biggest band (along with Rush).
This song is classic Guess Who. Soulful to the core. That they aren't in the RRHOF is a joke. Of course the RRHOF is a joke.
Thanks for this Professor. You really hit it out of the park on this one.
Thanks Roger!
Here in Australia it is Nickleback and Loverboy the biggest Canadian bands followed by B.T.O ,Rush did not chart here at all and Guess Who never went higher than 27 here
These Eyes was the first international hit for a Canadian rock band. They were a good band and deserve the RHoF along with BTO. But neither band compares to Rush.
@@roywarriner8441 Rush was a non starter here in Australia totally failed to get any traction here
@@roywarriner8441 Actually Shakin All Over was here in 1965 These Eyes did not really chart here
Like my Mom always said: "People and places come and go...but good music always stays". True That !
R.I.P. Mom
I can't imagine the late 60's with out them, so many memorys pop up, just a staple of my youth.
They really should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
It’s sad that they have no morals.
Burt and Randy… Thank You Thank You!!!
The Guess Who doesn't need the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
They will always be a part of my own Hall of Fame.
You do such a great job interviewing these gentlemen. Randy and Burton are both the real deal. Down to earth guys that you can't help but like.
I always enjoy them, they’re so funny and entertaining.
Randy is very intelligent and seems like he avoided the excesses of being a “rock star”.
Always like it when successful people share insight and process.
Years ago a very aged George Burns was on with Johnny Carson. I was interested in what a guy nearly 100 at the time could share. All he did was his tired old comedy routine, very disappointing. Mr Bachman and Mr Burton are generous to share their history.
These guys don’t need the Hall of fame, their body of work speaks for itself.
F the RRHF. They have nuthin'.
Really, a great interview for sure! I enjoyed as much as they did!
@@mplsmark222 Why blame George Burns? I don't think one would expect anything else. Now if he had appeared on Dick Cavett, i would expect a more in-depth interview than what Carson would do. I liked both Carson and Cavett but they had two completely different shows.
They definitely belong in The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. I love These Eyes. Their music is loved by many generations of fans over many decades🎶🇨🇦🥰🤠🥂🎶🇨🇦🥰
They’re great guys.
No self respecting rock and roll musician would want to be in the R&R HOF, it’s become a joke.
I was at High School in North Vancouver BC from 1967 through 1972. The Guess Who were an inspiration for so many Canadian kids who formed garage bands with dreams of glory.
The Guess Who had one of the best bassists ever too. These Eyes and Undun both have amazing bass lines. I agree that they should be in the R&R hall of fame, but their success speaks for itself.
Right on!
As a Gearhead ( BTO fan) Bachman Turner Overdrive also should be in the Rock and Rock Hall Of Fame...
No Time is my favorite Guess Who song
It just goes to prove how shallow the R&R Hall of fame has become that I did not think it really matters anymore. Great music never dies and becomes part of our mental wallpaper. Just keep playing these great classic bands when our kids are around and it filters down into their music choices.
@@juliereminiec4937 That’s a really good one for sure.
Wow. Randy and Burton are STILL just a couple of very humble, genuine Canadian farm boys. After all these years, you can still see the powerful emotion in Burton's eyes when he talks about Junior Walker and All Stars recording the song...Awesome stuff.
Lived outside of Detroit from '93 - '00 and often ventured over the bridge to Windsor and points south. Recall reading local newspapers about Burton playing a private gig for a special family. In short, you're right, how could they be any more humble.
Randy Bachman is up there in my book! The man is a genius. And Burton Cummings the man can sing! Both The Guess Who and BTO should be in the hall of fame.
Agreed! They are fabulous.
NOT being in the hall of fame is a badge of honor.
I just realized that, although I've been watching Professor of Rock for a long time, I didn't fully appreciate what he's been doing with his videos. THANK YOU, Professor of Rock!
the story of "These Eyes" is one of the BEST!
You’re right. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has PLENTY to be embarrassed about, not just the omission of The Guess Who.
It’s insane that they’re not in the rock and roll hall of fame! So many hits!
Burton Cummings has an incredible voice. He sounds even better live!
As Adam said, one of the most underrated voices ever.
Exceptional song. No excuse for them not being in the hall of fame.
This song alone should have got them in.
As a proud Winnipegger... I'm so happy youve done so many stories with Randy the last few weeks... And now Burton too! I'm only 25, and JUST got to see him on the 27th of December for the very first time... So happy I got to see our hometown legend ATLEAST once... Still played and sounded amazing!
Thanks for sharing these stories sir!! Keep up the amazing work!!
I was in a garage band in Fort St John, BC when Shakin All Over came out. It absolutely blew me away! We learned it as quick as we could. At that time it was one of the best rock and roll songs I'd ever heard. That and Roadhouse Blues by The Doors are my two favourites from that era. Then the hits just started rolling out one after the other from the Guess Who and they just got better and better! These Eyes is still one of my all time favourites! The other thing a lot of people don't realize is that these guys were consummate musicians. No C, F,, and G chord progressions for them! Minor 7th's, 7th's, flats, etc. pretty much unheard of, let a lone used in rock music. The fact that they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is ludicrous! They should be there as a band, and Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings should be there as songwriters as well!!
It’s ridiculous that they keep snubbing Burton and Randy and their crew!
You're so right! And I also agree on Roadhouse Blues. The Doors were premiere blues artists - Been Down So Long, The Cars Hiss by my Window, etc.
One of my favorite videos that you've done!
Quick story, A friend gave me a copy of the video of "The Guess Who - Running back thru Canada".
After my 26 year old nephew died of a sudden heart attack, we booked a cottage with my wife's sister and her husband. We were all so rattled at the sudden loss of such a young man. I suggested, maybe a concert video might be nice to watch.
I put the Guess Who on and once the concert started, we were mesmerized.
We sang every song with the band.
It was such a fantastic healing time. One of the best 2.5 hours we have ever had.
If you haven't had a chance to see Running Back Thru Canada, the band were totally on their game!
Highly recommended.
Live at the Paramount is a banger too! A real must listen!
@@vilstef6988
One of the first albums I ever bought.
@@vilstef6988 Burton Cummings' Life and Times documentary on CBC-TV is also a well worth watching. Randy and Burt tell their story of These Eyes and other hits.
Nothing today can ever compare to the 70-80s music! Unbelievable talent we will never see again.
Not only my favorite Guess Who songs, but one of my favorite songs period. It always takes me back to the most difficult breakup I ever experienced. It is a cathartic song for me. One of those songs I have to sing at the top of my lungs
I’m so sorry to hear that.
I have to sing it loudly as well, just to be able to hit the high notes.
Dust in the Wind is another one for me.
Randy and Burton are amazing! I love them.
So much for the credibility of Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. I was 16 in 69. Drivers license, 8 track tunes in the car and Guess Who was playing on the loop. Vivid memories of the best music in history and not just Guess Who, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s. Then autotune ruined music.
Thanks for an excellent interview. Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings are two of my favourite artists from the late sixties and still today. I only hope the Guess Who will be eventually voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
This song almost makes me tear up every time I hear it. It transports me back to 1969, when I remember it playing in our junior high lunchroom. It conjures up such innocence and sweetness, I can almost taste it.
🥰
THESE EYES BRINGS BACK A LOT OF MEMORIES FOR ME. WHEN I WAS A KID MY MOM USED TO CLEAN THE HOUSE LATE AT NIGHT. WORK FOR THE DAY WAS OVER, KIDS IN BED, OUT OF HER HAIR. SHE USED TO PUT MUSIC ON TO HELP GET HER SECOND WIND. SHE USED TO GO TO TOWN. SINGING , DANCING AND VACUUMING. THESE EYES JUST CAME OUT AND SHE JUST LOVED IT😊. NOW DAYS, WHEN I HEAR THESE EYES, IT BRINGS ME TO MY HUSBANDS PASSING. THE WORDS TO THESE EYES ARE EXACTLY HOW I FEEL ABOUT LOOSING HIM. THE LOVE OF MY LIFE.
I've always enjoyed The Guess Who's music. My favorite song from them is a tie between "These Eyes" and "No Time". The Guess Who are one of a long list of artists that I can think of who has unfairly been snubbed by The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Their omission is ridiculous.
No Time is a great song.
I love "No Time"!!
If Randy Bachman himself pronounces it “Backman,” then that’s the way everyone should say it. It’s not that complicated, man.
As a fellow Canadian, I'm extremely proud of the legacy The Guess Who, left behind. Truly an incredible band, by any standards. I've often felt there's a bias against Canadian bands, in voting for rock and roll fame induction. Look at how long it took Rush to get in. It's criminal, the Guess Who, still aren't in. Not to mention the fact, that both Burton and Randy went on to other successful ventures. And, very successful ventures at that. Canada has had many amazing bands that most Americans have never heard of. The Tragically Hip and Blue Rodeo, being a couple of prime examples.
They just flat out ignore Canadian legends.
Klaatu
They must go in the Hall of Fame. As a teenager, these songs were with us all through our youthful fun!
Agree!
Randy is one of the best rock storytellers out there, I've spent countless of nights listening to Vinyl Tap on CBC before the hockey game.
Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings are both members of Canada's Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame for their work with the Guess Who. The band struck monster hits in the US first though and had strings of hit singles and albums here for almost a decade. It's absolutely ridiculous that they aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame here in the States! And you picked my favorite Guess Who song to spotlight too! Thanks so much for that and the wonderful interview with Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings! Two truly outstanding men of rock,n'roll!
You know, Professor, I *liked* so many of these songs and artists that you cover, but after watching the interviews, it actually almost makes me LOVE them.
It's so true. Great people.
Same.
A couple of legends who definitely should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!! 😎
My first concert was BTO at the CNE (Toronto) in 1974 and I saw a ton of shows shortly after which were iconic. The R&R HOF got a thumbs up when we finally got Rush inducted in 2013, Dolly last year was a step back. The Guess Who, Supertramp, Jethro Tull, etc all deserve a place.
Hey, mine too!
The Guess Who are one of our iconic Canadian bands. I saw Randy Bachman 8 times live and met him. I saw Burton Cummings 4 times live and met him. They have so many great songs. Cheers!✌️🇨🇦
One of the secrets in their song writing was having a cool riff with edge which the guys would love, but then the chorus was so melodic that the girls would go for it too.
Randy & Burton’s “These Eyes” as recorded by “The Guess Who” may have been a monster of it’s time, but it’s remained a monster classic to this day. It’s TIMELESS. Same with so many of the Guess Who hits (“Laughing”, “Undun”, “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature”, “No Time”, “American Woman”, “Hand Me Down World”, “Share The Land”, “Clap For The Wolfman”).
Burton is still my all-time favorite vocalist. There are other vocalists with worldclass talent such as Steve Perry (Journey), Brad Delp (Boston), David Pack (Ambrosia), Marty Balin (Jefferson Starship), Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railroad), and of course the late great Glen Campbell of the legendary “Wrecking Crew”. I LOVE listening to all of those gifted vocalists singing their songs, but if I were to be forced into listening to only one vocalist for the rest of my life and I had to make that choice, it would be Burton Cummings - no hesitation!
Good on ya for including Marty Balin (RIP) and Brad Delp (RIP) in that list.
@@richardskelly4106
Campbell’s also gone on over to the other side (RIP).
I'm constantly surprised to be reminded of how many great songs The Guess Who had..... I had no idea they had 14 top 40 songs. This song I remember very clearly being played on the radio when I still was in elementary school. Even at that age I was prone to the occasional crush and this song became part of a wistful soundtrack of innocent romantic longing. I can see the clock radio that used to sit on my headboard that play music to wake me up when I hear this song.
White body, black front panel, white numbers and a red second hand. It also brass colored hand indicator for setting the alarm time.
It's amazing the things that music can cause you to remember.
Not only are these guys innovators, they are humble and grateful. Timeless songs, I will listen to forever.
I had the great fortune of seeing The Guess Who twice and both Randy and Burton solo one time each. Randy told stories all through his set and it was just him and his wife doing tambourine and backing vocals; it was so great. I honestly wasn't aware they weren't in the R&R HOF, it just seems like a given that they would be in there. Wolfman Jack would be very displeased about this.
As WJ would say, I guess RRHOF's mojos not working to good today
Wow Wolfman Jack and The Midnight Special, my very young youth, and who can forget Chiller Theater.
I agree with you they belong in the hall of fame. So many great songs and Burton Cummings is one the greatest voices in R&R history. And BTO needs to belong as well. These songs, these productions, are outstanding.
I love these dives into the "older" bands from the earlier eras of rock, I hope to see you do more of them since you're always so good at telling the story professor. Cheers!
More to come!
Get those interviews soon, they are dropping like flies. 😪
I love these interviews with older bands and getting them to tell their stories. Glad you are the one giving us a chance to relive the older eras of rock n roll and interviewing the people who made it. Lots of people forget how influential these bands and songs are. A lot of these artists won’t be here for much longer, and I’m glad you get these great stories out there.
One of my ALL TIME favorite groups. They were HUGE back in the '60's & '70's. So many hits & their deep cuts were good too. So many memories come into my mind whenever I hear a song by them. Love Burton's Stand Tall.
They had a lot of influence.
Great interview, love these guys. Hilarious when they get together and Burton jokes onstage before they do a BTO song about Randy writing this song when he wasn't too happy with me... Then he sings it with him ! So funny, nice they have been able to bury the past. Reminds me of TFF with Curt and Roland joking about songs Roland wrote solo about Curt...Now they're best of friends.
I love hearing the back stories from the guys that lived it. I also appreciate your interviewing style. You don’t interrupt or talk over your guests. 60s and 70s era rock-n-roll is the greatest. Well done, Professor!

I just love these guys and the interviews you do with them. You are so right that they are the best story tellers. And of course their music is incredible. That they aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a crime and an embarrassment for the Hof. Thank you so much for bringing another half hour of pure joy to my day, Adam. I hope you're having an excellent day yourself!
In 1970 I was 16 years old, living and working as a Life Guard in Erie, Pennsylvania and the Guess Who ruled the summer. I came home after Labor Day to go back to high school and that band was a part of my life forever. Thank you gentlemen!
Both musical legends interviewing on one of their greatest songs, awesome. These 2 could write a classic in 10 minutes and it would be like nothing else being down at the time. To think they aren't in the Hall of Fame speaks more about the Hall of Fame than anything, travesty! Great episode professor! I hope there is more like laughing and no sugar tonight and no time!
Coming up. No worries.
I just like to ignore the RRHOF. All they do is wax picky about everything.
I was 12 in 1969, "These Eyes" was one of the first rock songs that I locked onto. I was a major Guess Who fan pretty much all my life. From 18 to forty in the Marines, the music from my youth drove and motivated us all. I've been running across these videos showcasing my music history for a couple years now, and really enjoying the facts I never knew.
These Eyes, wow one of the most beautiful songs ever. Very haunting feel to it. Thank you Professor, you're the best
Randy is a great story teller
Well over a decade as a radio host in Canada will do that
My all time favorite song, thank you so much professor for hooking up with Randy and Burton. It’s so wonderful to hear about their collaborative work. I can remember standing on a chair to reach the volume knob of the radio on the kitchen counter and looking at my mom and smiling when I would turn it up a bit…they more than deserve to be in the rrhof. ❤
My wife and I would sing this song together when we'd hear it while driving. When our boys were young, and we'd drive around with their friends, we'd sing it louder and louder and they'd get so embarrassed! Needless to say it brings back so many fond memories. We still sing it when the boys are around.
So many great memories of my Mom listening to the Guess who when I was a kid. Meeting Burton Cummings when I was 9 years old was such a turning point for me in my life. One of the main reasons I pursued making music.
Folks like Burton can and do have huge influence on folks. In your case, enough to pursue a career.
Cummings and Bachman are so much fun to a listen to and watch. And great musicians, of course. Thanks, Professor!
@@mudhens4ever I'm really looking forward to the updated video on "American Woman" now that he has an interview with both of them.
Lucky you!
I first heard the Guess Who is a 10 year old digging through his older brothers eight track tapes. That was about 50 years ago! I always love it when I hear the music come on the radio.
It is so refreshing to hear guys that have been so incredibly blessed be excited and grateful and not pompous and arrogant. Minnesota loves these guys and they exhibit the character qualities we highly esteemed growing up. What a blessing they and their songs have been!!💯
These Eyes is a phenomenal song and These Guys definitely belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Was so fortunate to get to see them live in the early 90’s!! They were great!!
My first memory of The Guess Who was back in the early 90s. I picked up a greatest hits CD and thought "is this some Who tribute band?". I then started looking at the tracks on the jacket and was like i know that song, and that song, and holy crap these guys are amazing! I never knew that they sang all those great songs. Not being in the HoF is indefensible.
I love reminiscing about my teenage years, and the Guess Whov was one of those bands that we loved to hear, so those 45s and 33s were getting pretty scratchy after a while.
Awesome band, thank you for the good times, Randy, Burt, and the rest of the guys at the Guess Who. Professor of Rock, you rock!
My brother and I bought our first 45s in ‘69, cutouts for a nickel apiece. Mine was “I Fought the Law” by the Bobby Fuller Four and my brother’s was These Eyes. I played the crap out of mine for several months but have not ever heard the song in decades. I could listen to These Eyes 100 times in a row and still not tire of it.
Another great interview. I'd like to see a behind the scenes video of how you come up with ideas, as well as how you put it all together. Thanks again Adam.
Noted!
Thank you, Professor, for this video. I am a 58 year old homogenized white boy, and if you grew up with this music, and didn't get a little weepy a couple times during this video, you have no heart. Just like the RRHOF. Those first few notes of These Eyes break my heart every single time I hear them. The Guess Who don't just belong IN the RRHOF ... they should have their own wing.
Love it when you interview these guys, they're so down to earth and the stories they tell are absolutely brilliant 😉. Burton and Bachman are two of the nicest guys in rock 🎸 🎸 🇨🇦 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
I've been telling everyone for over 50 years that the Guess Who are the best Rock band ever.
I always enjoy hearing the stories from randy and burton. Please do more interviews with them. I grew up listening to them. Their music was an integral part of my life. Their music is awesome. They opened the doors for other talented canadian musicians. Makes me proud to be a canadian.
Thank you so much. My memories of these songs brings me back to the raido, my 8 track and cheap fine old wine!!!!! Thank you so much for bringing me back!!!!!
Man! This segment went too fast! That was one of the most enjoyable segments you’ve done to date, and you’ve done a lot of them. Hearing the story about these hits is just fantastic. Keep it going. You’re on the right track. Literally and figuratively.
Born in 65 and growing up listening to bands like The Guess Who. Yeah they definitely should be in the Hall of Fame.
Talk about foreshadowing! I just watched SUPERBAD last night. And while so many scenes are laugh-out-loud funny, one of my favorites is when Michael Cera is forced to sing These Eyes. Hysterical! Yor timing is uncanny.
Wow! That's pretty amazing. Thanks for watching my friend!
Isn’t it really cool?
When he says he loved when other stations would play the two versions back to back. They’d get double the royalties that way 😉
Randy looks great, I freakin' love this guy, I watched the Vinyl Tap Every Song Tells a story, and since that I've watched at least 20 of different interviews, he's highly underrated in my opinion. Him and Burton were one hell of a team to say the least and of course BTO, just killer, timeless stuff.
Canadian Icons!!!! Criminal that they are not in the R&R HOF!!!! Great songs and stories!! Keep em coming POR!
I love that he keeps the legendary golden era of rock forever cool. It was the greatest explosion of creativity ...the 60, 70s, 80s
Love these guys! My first album purchase was American Woman. Burton has the most unique and beautiful voice in rock history and Randy's riffs are notched into my soul - def should be I hall of fame!
No challenge with this. The Guess Who is one of my favorites of all my 73 years!
This episode was such a joy to watch! I had a smile on my face the whole time - and you are right... Randy Bachman is an excellent storyteller. I loved learning about the Zombies' influence on the sound, and of course the genesis of how it was written. I noticed too that Burton Cummings' eyes were getting wet, perhaps a sign of how much he was relishing the memories.
It was so sweet, the power of music.
Professor of Rock, I don’t know how many people think of the song No Time as one of the all-time Classics, but on oldies radio they still play the heck out of that song, and they have done so for years and years. I think they play it more often than they play American woman.
Saw Burton and Randy at a barely advertised gig in a small venue near Omaha in the late 80's. . It was like everybody was relaxed and just having fun.
Freaking great time that I won't forget.
PoR, you are really stepping up your game! These interviews have been nothing short of stellar! Thank you
These eyes is of course my favorite Guess Who song! Hall of Fame, correct the egregious error, bring them home!
Guess who is fantabulous.......my buddy had played no time when we were at his place shooting pool and coping a cheap feel with the chick next door early 70 s...great memories.
Such great music from 2 humble, grateful artists. They marked an era and their music is timeless.
Being from and living in Winnipeg Manitoba myself, we have nothing but pride for The Guess Who. They do deserve to be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame.
Saw Guess Who/BTO at Tommy's bar in Deep Ellum Dallas in 1987 with a mix of new members for both bands. What a catalog of music and in such a small venue....It was one of the best concerts I've ever experienced.
I was so lucky to grow up with a father who had a love and passion for great music. He instilled that in me from an early age. "These eyes" was one of his favorite songs both rhythmically and lyrically, so of course it became one of mine. I remember the day I met my wife, not only did her beauty floor me, but when I looked into her eyes and I noticed that they were a mesmerizing natural copper color. She always said the first thing she noticed about me was my eyes, which are ice blue. On our first date, I sang "These eyes" to her, and she started to cry, not because of my singing, but no one had ever sang to her before. 25 yrs and 4 children with gorgeous eyes later, we are still happily married, and "These eyes" has always been "our" song.
I loved the story about the coffee house with Joni Mitchell- "these guys" were right there when the legends started (including themselves). What a great story Interview
Glad you enjoyed it
Only problem is... we don't find out what happened on Randy's date with that young lady on that fateful evening when he came up with the piano riff. How did the date go? Enquiring minds want to know!
I never realized how great the bass line is for "these eyes"; have to go learn it! 🙂
I really do love listening to these guys. I'd like to be able to sit and chat with them for a couple of hours or just hang out for a day and take in all of the stories. As always, thank you so much for all that you do for us and the music.
I bought the Guess who album for my best friend in Sixth grade.
It was one of my favorites of all time.
No Time, No Sugar Tonight what great songs. I have them on my song list today.
The Guess Who is Classic !
“These Eyes” is definitely a timeless song, the fact that them, The MC5 and Dteppenwolf are not in the RRHOF is baffling.
Most people don’t know who the MC5 is but they should totally check them out! Please listen to “Kick Out the Jams”.
