The Guess Who were a band from Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. The lead vocalist is Burton Cummings and lead guitar was Randy Bachman, the bass player was Jim Kale and the drummer was Gary Peterson. Now that video you watch was missing the first part of the song where Burton spells out the letters AMERICAN in a Bluesy almost sensual way before hitting hard into the main riff. Also interesting was there was an additional guitarist in that video on the left. The lead guitarist was standing mostly behind the bass player so that means it was done at the end of 1970 just before Randy Bachman left the Guess Who because he was being hassled by his bandmates because of his religion that prevented him from drugs and alcohol. He started a group with members of his family called Brave Belt and then went on to more success with another band, Bachman Turner Overdrive also called BTO. Their first big hit was, Taking Care Of Business, which has been featured in number of films and television series. Yet the Guess Who were epic as a Blues Psychedelic Rock band.
@@tonyd1185 Thank you Tony for that clarification. Watching the video, I couldn't be certain because he was standing in the background behind Kale, and I was aware that both Winter and Leskiw stepped in to replace Bachman, but neither were accomplished as Randy. After the release of the album "Rockin' " Leskiw left to be replaced by Donnie McDougall in 1972. Jim Kale the bassist left in 1972 as well, replaced by Bill Wallace, leaving only Burton Cummings and drummer Garry Peterson left as original members. In 1974 both Winter and McDougall left and they brought on guitarist Domenic Troiano who was formerly with Mandala as well as the James Gang, which brought them back to a four piece band. Their last album was in 1974, Power In The Music. Well, with Burton Cummings. Drummer Garry Peterson maintained the rights to the name The Guess Who and continued to record and tour, the weird thing is, Jim Kale did the same thing. Every once in a while the original classic lineup of Cummings, Bachman, Kale, and Peterson would get together for an event, but not record an album. Cummings and Bachman recorded together. The last six album by the Guess Who with Cummings as lead vocalist were released in both regular stereo and 4 channel Quadraphonic. I purchased any Quad album that came out because I had a Quadraphonic system. The key to Quad turntables is having a Compatible Discrete 4 demodulator, which can be part of the turntable and/or part of the 4 channel amplifier. I have a Quad pre-amp, which means it has four independent outputs for four separate tube driven amplifiers. I am an analog audiophile. The equipment was initially expensive, but the best part is because they are analog and there are no digital components they are extremely easy to repair and parts are not expensive. I have service manuals for everything I own and I am an autodidact in electronics. I also can switch to stereo and use a different turntable for two channel vinyl where I own a lot of half speed masters. Now, back in the 70s, half speed masters were done painstakingly in analog and then it really comes down to the actual quality of the pressing when the album has been restored to its natural speed. Because a lousy pressing won't matter what kind of turntable one has. Sadly, North American pressings are among the worst in the world. Why they have not upgraded is beyond me. Even Russia has surpassed Canada and the USA. The best pressings come from Japan, Germany, Holland, and the UK. I always purchase imports. I am a Canadian, which makes is all that more expensive.
This song was the definition of Luck. During a gig in Canada the guitarist broke a string and while retuning after replacing the string he came up with the chords that make up the hook for this song. He yelled over to Burton to "sing something sing anything" so that he could remember this set of chords and Burton came up with "American Woman" on the spot, history was made.
The song American Woman was made on the fly at a concert somewhere in the U.S., Burton and one other member got back on stage after a break before the rest of the band so they started farting around with different sounds and Cummings started making up some lyrics which went on to become one the most iconic songs of the era. They actually asked the audience if anyone had recorded the song so they could remember it and polish it for recording. It's a Canadian Band.
Canadian band that is one of the top bands of my generation. Burton Cumming is one of the all time rock singers...hard or mellow. Randy Bachman was one of the guitar players, he went on to form Bachman Turnner Overdrive...aka...BTO. Takin Care of Business is an iconic song.
By the time this lip synced video was made, Randy Bachman, who did play the guitar parts on the song, had left the band and who you see in the video are his replacements. Greg Liskiw, on the left, and Kurt Winter on the right.
@@dennisrendall8750 Thanks for the insight. When i saw this, i wondered where's Randy Bachman. How do you know it is lip synced? I know that was done a lot back then but....i just read about Bryan Adams where he appeared in the United Kingdom, they wanted him to lip sync his song which he refused to do---did the song live on stage. Or maybe it was on "Wings Of Pegasus" channel that i saw that story. Check his RUclips Channel out if you are not familiar with it.
Burton Cummings lead singer , From Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada .... Along with Randy Bachman Who went on to form BTO ... Bachman Turner Overdrive !! The song was about fanatical American female groupie that would not leave them alone !!
Wolfman Jack rulled. I live in San Diego and the first time I heard him was from a studio in Chula Vista just before you drive south to the Mexican border. He was in Los Angeles in a separate studio. This was in the mid 60s. HAVE MERCY BABY !!!!
The Guess Who are from my home town of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I grew up following them around to different dances back in the 60's. We even hired them to play at a church dance in around 1962. Winnipeg, Canada is very proud of the success of the band. This video isn't the original band. The lead singer is Burton Cummings. The original guitarist is Randy Bachman, later forming Bachman Turner Overdrive. Burton Cummings still tours and still has that amazing voice.
Burton Cummings. The band was from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Being a Canadian kid growing up in the 60s/70s The Guess Who and Neil Young were favourites of mine. Guitarist, Randy Bachman later went on to form, "BTO", Backman-Turner Overdrive, who were just as successful with hits like Let It Ride, You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet, Takin' Care of Business, Hey You, and Roll on Down the Highway.
I love that you’re going down the Guess Who path. So many great songs. This is definitely rock. The more I tune in to your channel, the more I think how lucky we were in the 70’s to have so much amazing music. Thanks for the reminders. ❤️🤘🏼🔥
The lead singer Burton Cummins is an amazing talent. Check out some of his solo stuff like Stand Tall, Break it to them Gently or I will sing a Rhapsody. You will not be disappointed.
Burton Cummings is one of the all time great voices in rock. I saw an interview with him recently. He talked about American Woman. He said he was talking to a fan when the band started playing. He ran up on the stage, grabbed the microphone and started singing whatever came into his head. When they finished they knew they had a great one but were worried they couldn't remember the lyrics. They found that one of the fans had a tape recorder so they were able to get all the lyrics to American woman and the rest is history. It's funny how so much of the time great things turn out to be a rare convergence of unrelated circumstances.
They are from my home town Winnipeg, MB Canada.....sometimes you could see Burton sitting at the bar with friends, or walking around his old Neighborhood and just having conversations with people!
One night YEARS ago in Toronto, up stairs jazz club, my bf and I went in an talus we just missed the set. Somebody walked up to a piano beside where we were sitting; and started playing. I kept saying to my bf sounds like, looks like Burton Cummings...it was. We chatted. He asked if we minded him jamming - ha!!! Um no, we didn't mind at all.
I met Burton several times in the mid '80s when he lived on Vancouver Island for a while (he had an acreage retreat in Saanichton). I worked at a photo lab in downtown Victoria and he would often come in to get his film processed. He was a nice guy, but then I never went all fan-boy on him -- although I was a huge fan of his music! The ladies at the lab swooned all over him.
This is the band that knocked the Beatles White Album off the top of the Billboard Charts!! They even played at the White House! They are from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada......my hometown. I got to see them live many times.
Lead singer fellow Canadian Burton Cummings - one of the most talented ever. You haven't even scratched the surface of his talent with this song, you need to see more of The Guess Who and Burton's solo stuff.
This is one of my favorite bands of all time. They later split into two groups. Two members left to become Brave Belt then changed that name to Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO). BTO had some hits with "You aint seen nothing yet" and "Let it ride". The lead singer is Burton Cummings and he is from Winnipeg, Canada. His wife is an American woman (I'm not certain if he was singing about his wife in the song).
The singers name is Burton Cummings, from Canada. He's awesome. Check out his Stand Tall and the best version ever of When a Man Loves a Woman. Even if you don't record a reaction, both of you will love both of them.
As someone said earlier, this is a Canadian band with Burton Cummings on lead and this was a Vietnam War protest song. The woman referred to was the Statue of Liberty, and, as far as I can remember, not many were offended in any way.
Cummings has said a few times that Bachman was full of it when he said it was political. He insisted that the lyrics were basically a reverse way of saying he loved Canadian women because American Women grew up too fast.
@@GT-ry1cv thank you!! The amount of people saying this is driving me crazy. He has said in numerous interviews what you just stated. It was simply about preferring Canadian women to American women

This band from Canada didn't stay together too long. Burton Cummings, the singer went on to a solo career. Randy Bachman on guitar formed Bachmann Turner Overdrive. That's another group you should react to. "Takin' Care of Business" would be a good candidate. Love your work. Rock on!
Sorry, nothing to do with groupies. It's a metaphor of America of the era. While not an entirely accurate representation of the era, it is a view from a Canadian perspective at the time. Groupies don't have a "war machine " or "ghettos."
Burton Cummings is a brilliant singer. His song Stand Tall is a spectacular example of his voice! Another great song of Guess Who is Three More Days - absolute killer song - you would love it.
Hey, guys !! The Guess Who is from Canada, and they are awesome !! Burton Cummings is singing this song, but this band also includes Robbie Bachman from BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive, known for "Takin Care of Business", as well as many more ). They are a very talented band, and you should check out some of their other songs...Undun, These Eyes, No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature and Bus Rider...just great vocals, great band all the way around !!
If you look at the original album cover you will see that the American Woman is in fact the Statue of Liberty. Doesn't say so but the saying about a picture being worth a thousand words...anti govt anti war music.
Burton stated during in early 70's when he and others of the band were in their 20's in USA. They were worried about being sucked into Vietnam War. The Guess Who were touring USA. As they gotten back home in Canada, they wrote this song.
IMO the "I'm gonna leave" reflected what some young men did to evade the military draft by moving to Canada. I did not get drafted because the previous birth year was the last to be drafted. I did have a draft number #109. Mike
The funny thing is that as time goes by there's just more and more music to explore. It's overwhelming to actually be well-versed in music of even the last 50 years.
@@09Charler2321 If you believe it's NOT about America ... you are being a bit naive. Artists always deny the meaning .. keeps peeps interested. Anyway, supply a link for your argument?
Any true artist leaves interpretation up to the individual. If that is what it means to you, so be it. If it reminds you of unicorns dancing in the rain, so be it. Hasn't this happened with many artists songs, such as "Every Breath You Take" being construed as a love song often played at weddings? Its 50 years later, still a great song played by great musicians. BTW, others have provided a link in the comments to the interview where the meaning is explained. But it is totally fine NOT to read it & have it mean what you want. Don't let ANYONE spoil your enjoyment! (my opinion, of course) ✌✌✌
you can read or watch countless interviews on this song and over the years Burton has backed away from the connotations.. at 12:15 he seems pretty fine with it ruclips.net/video/-z-0quaS3r8/видео.html
My sister, cousin and I saw them in concert in Lake Tahoe many years ago. They were incredible and I had been a fan of theirs forever!! The other act who played that night was none other than Steppenwolf...of Born to be Wild and Magic Carpet Ride fame!! It was a magical night to be sure!!!
The Canadian Gov mandated that radio stations had to play a certain percentage of Canadian artists, so I got to grow up listening to great bands like "The Guess Who" "Rush" "Gordon Lightfoot" "Joni Mitchell", Joni is another very special voice to hear for your Female Fridays. Burton Cummings also has some very good solo pieces, he is a very good pianist, look for "I will play a rhapsody" or "Break it to them gently" as just a couple of his music. About 5 years ago I got to see the lead guitar player, Randi Bachman, perform.
Gord,, I live a stones throw from Randy Bachman and also have enjoyed his local performances. I can also confirm Canadian Broadcast Radio (Media) is mandated to contain a percentage of Canadian content in order to receive tax payer funding. Thank god, what foresight!
I mc'd for Burton during a solo concert. He's a great talent. The band is from Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. Decades later, he tried to convince people it was indeed about a woman (good career move) but he initially stated it was about the country, back in the day (1969). That was the REAL reason for the song.
I saw this group inLas Vega at an outdoor show on Fremont Street. They were really good considering their ages. They looked like old men but played like teenagers. What a great show.
My favorite song by The Guess Who is Laughing. Burton Cummings is not only a great singer but he plays the piano and helped write a lot of the songs he sings.
Burton Cummings, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. This song is probably why the Guess Who were never inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame, because some people interpreted it as a Vietnam anti-war song.
The lead guitar player went on to play with "Bachman Turner Overdrive". Another great band you need to have on your channel. "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" is a fun song from them.
I love watching your reactions because it’s so pure. No precise notions of what the songs are going to be like because most of the time you have never heard of the artist
Burton after the Guess Who broke up went solo and had a number of hits (Stand Tall was one) and guitarist Randy Bachman formed BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive) and they had lots hits like Takin Care of Business , You Aint Seen Nothin Yet etc

"These eyes" by them is fire !! "No time" is great !!and "Hand me down world"... I'm glad so many people are doing reaction videos and getting to hear and experience the best music ever !!
"Undun" and "No Time" are just a couple of their many great songs. Burton Cummings is one of my favorite singers. Still sounds great today. He and lead guitarist Randy Bachman were going to tour together pre-covid. They are Canadian.
I only knew the remake of this one, too (it was great to hear the original). Lenny Kravitz did sing it on an Austin Powers soundtrack, you're right Jay.
This song is a metaphor for America, the Statue of Liberty. Its a Vietnam War era, anti war song. The band is Canadian. Lead singer is Burton Cummings. This group has many great hits. Another great Canadian band with a great singer is Steppenwolf same era, 'Born to Be Wild' or 'Magic Carpet Ride' lead singer John Kay.
I've ALWAYS loved Burton Cummings' singing! He's doing his "rock voice" here, but he has a beautiful voice for ballads, too. This is an anti-war / anti-draft song.
The group is Canadian and the lead singer is Burton Cummings. The group also includes Randy Bachman, who with his brother went on to form the Bachman Turner Overdrive or BTO.

Lol wish I had seen this post sooner..would have saved me time writing one...lol
@@markburrows1179 I’m pretty sure Kale got fired!
One of Canada's most legendary and respected bands. Many great songs and albums!!!
When I hear these throw back songs it makes me realize I grew up at the right time, the 60's & 70's.
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada 🇨🇦 ♥
Amazing artist, band. Burton Cummings lead vocals.
A Canadian band that wrote probably the greatest “American” rock song of all time.
And was a very anti American song at that.
@@williamh4172 Anti American Government, not the American People who were also against the Viet Nam War.
Yes it was
Actually, it's an anti-American song. Nixon mistakenly thought it was pro-American.
@@williamh4172 Wrong, www.cbc.ca/radio/q/friday-may-8-2020-daniel-brooks-burton-cummings-and-more-1.5559348/american-woman-at-50-burton-cummings-reveals-the-real-story-behind-the-legendary-song-1.5560774
The lyrics were just stream of consciousness because as Randy Bachman said SING ANYTHING!
The version I read was that it happened ( just as written above) at a roller rink in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. That building is now a hardware store.
The Guess Who is so underrated!
Love this band!
What a vocal performance!
It's a Canadian Band.
actually, a concert in Southern Ontario, Canada - not the US
Canadian band that is one of the top bands of my generation.
This is a Vietnam War protest song. The woman, the Statue of Liberty, represented the politics of the US Government back in the day.
Indeed, the lyrics also mean it can be interpreted as a more general critique of US foreign policy, it certainly still applies
I do believe it was the first or one of the first protest songs to get air play... the radio dj's didn't realize it was a protest song at the time.
@@swfcocs1 "I don't need your war machine, I don't need your ghetto scenes"
If you watch Burton Cummings interviews he denies this is an anti war song and rather about preferring Canadian women to American women
Correct
.
Burton Cummings has one of the most recognizable voices in music. Every song is great!
The lead singer's name is Burton Cummings! The Guess Who band hails from Quebec Canada! They're Canadians! 😊
Burton Cummings lead singer , From Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada .... Along with Randy Bachman Who went on to form BTO ... Bachman Turner Overdrive !! The song was about fanatical American female groupie that would not leave them alone !!
Another great song, from the Guess Who is "These Eyes" love the song.
Lead is Burton Cummings he and the lead guitar wrote all the music. They are a Canadian band Burton Cummings was dating Richard Nixon's daughter.
LI’ve These Eyes! ♥️🥰
*Love These Eyes! 😳
These eyes have seen a lot of love but they're never gonna see a love like I had with youuuuuuuuu
Try "She's come Undone" and "These Eyes" also by the Guess Who. Both great songs.
Fantastic music from my generation love this music
What a band! What a singer! Bachman was a Rocker, man!
I still remember the very first time I heard this song. It was on an AM radio station my sister had on. I was blown away by that guitar line.
They did a great song for Wolfman Jack called "Clap for the Wolfman". I would love to see your reaction to that
Such a great song!!!
My fave Guess Who song is "Undun"--it's hauntingly beautiful and mysterious. Also great is "No Sugar Tonight"--it is 'compositionally stacked.'
Ahhh yes No Sugar Tonight!!
Undun is amazing!
She’s come undone is a beautiful song and I agree with you, I think it’s their best.
Burton Cummings...from Canada...also from Bachman Turner Overdrive, also a Canadian Band...listen to Burton Cummings on These Eyes...
I so agree!
You said it. My very first concert was The Guess Who in Toronto in 1974.
One of the most iconic ultimate-70s songs.
The lead singer Burton Cummins is an amazing talent. Check out some of his solo stuff like Stand Tall, Break it to them Gently or I will sing a Rhapsody. You will not be disappointed.
Oh I loved Stand Tall as a kid. Never knew it was the lead singer from The Guess Who
Burton Cummings is one of the all time great voices in rock.
Lenny Kravitz covered it and made it a Global hit for the second time.
And that was the version in The Spy Who Shagged me.
Kravitz version is shite. Piss poor cover and cultural appropriation.
That's our song!
Not as successful as the first version at least in Europe.
Krokus also covered this in the 80's great version
Great vocal harmony band. My favorite song by The Guess Who is "No Time."
That is my favorite song too by them.
They are from my home town Winnipeg, MB Canada.....sometimes you could see Burton sitting at the bar with friends, or walking around his old Neighborhood and just having conversations with people!
Jim Kale the bassist guitarist was born in Winnipeg and gew up less than a block from where I live.
The Guess Who are phenomenal! One of my dad's favorite bands from his era. Burton Cummings voice is amazing!
This is the band that knocked the Beatles White Album off the top of the Billboard Charts!! They even played at the White House! They are from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada......my hometown. I got to see them live many times.
His name is Burton Cummings and he is Canadian. One of the most underrated singers of the ‘70’s. Love The Guess Who. A lot of really great songs.
Some of the best rock bands ever in the history of recorded music…. Straight outta Canada
Lead Vocals Burton Cummings. The entire band are from Canada.
They’re a Winnipeg band, if I recall. I am more of a BTO Fan, but a great Canadian band.
The Band beats them both. But then they had Levon to help them. 😉
This is 1970 classic gold. The best music came from the 1970's imo!!! Lenny Kravitz did a great cover of this classic.
No era of music compares to the 70's. Period.
The 50th anniversary of this classic was on May 8, 2020 and CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) did a 15-minute radio interview with Burton Cummings where they discussed the song and Burton FINALLY told the whole story of it's genesis. RUclips won't let me post the link, but you can find it easily by searching "CBC American Woman at 50". You may be surprised!
This band from Canada didn't stay together too long. Burton Cummings, the singer went on to a solo career. Randy Bachman on guitar formed Bachmann Turner Overdrive. That's another group you should react to. "Takin' Care of Business" would be a good candidate. Love your work. Rock on!
No war machines and ghetto scenes. After that you know he isn’t from America. Love you guys.
Released 1970. A Canadian group singing about groupies. Lenny Kravitz much later covered it in 1999.
Sorry, nothing to do with groupies. It's a metaphor of America of the era. While not an entirely accurate representation of the era, it is a view from a Canadian perspective at the time. Groupies don't have a "war machine " or "ghettos."
Thanks for finally using headphones…. Makes such a difference especially when you are listening to Prog rock. This band is from Canada.
Burton Cummings had one of the best voices in rock.
Still does, baby.
I saw him with the Guess Who and also as an opener for Alice Cooper in the late 70’s
hes still doing so "has" not had
Burton Cummings has one of the most amazing voices. These Eyes and Undone are phenomenal.
Wrong. No Robbie Bachman (BTO). The drummer is Gary Peterson.
If you look at the original album cover you will see that the American Woman is in fact the Statue of Liberty. Doesn't say so but the saying about a picture being worth a thousand words...anti govt anti war music.
I don't want your war machines, I don't want your ghetto scenes. Yep
Mike
That's so cool! I did not know that!
Nope, Burton Cummings explains: www.cbc.ca/radio/q/friday-may-8-2020-daniel-brooks-burton-cummings-and-more-1.5559348/american-woman-at-50-burton-cummings-reveals-the-real-story-behind-the-legendary-song-1.5560774
I think it's so great that young people are appreciating the music I grew up with. Enjoy the treasure trove of talent that you're curious about!
The funny thing is that as time goes by there's just more and more music to explore. It's overwhelming to actually be well-versed in music of even the last 50 years.
This was a protest song against the Vietnam War, the American Woman is the statue of liberty.
This is wrong, google what Burton Cummings has said in interviews on the meaning behind the lyrics
@@09Charler2321 If you believe it's NOT about America ... you are being a bit naive. Artists always deny the meaning .. keeps peeps interested. Anyway, supply a link for your argument?
@@09Charler2321 that's what he says ..but its obvious .
Yes, it was in the first Austin Powers' film. They were dancing. Scene was really rocking. It hit the top 40 in 1970 along with NO Sugar Tonight.
Lead Singer, Burton Cummings, one of Canada's greatest from back in the day.
LMFAO... Like the law they have to attend 1 hockey game every year 🤣

The song is a protest song. American woman is the statue of liberty.
I saw this group inLas Vega at an outdoor show on Fremont Street. They were really good considering their ages. They looked like old men but played like teenagers. What a great show.
Burton Cummings, a Canadian band, speaking about the lure of America. Love, from the Great State of Oklahoma, USA 🤍
The Guess Who was awesome! My favorite song of theirs is "Laughing". I recommend it!
Burton Cummings, from Canada, he has been associated with a few bands. He had a slower song that I love. It’s called “Stand Tall”
This song was a protest about the Vietnam War. The US government was pressuring Canada into joining the conflict.
No, not true. It wasn't a protest and the US didn't pressure Canada into joining.
@@billdaverne9389 This is definitely a slam against the U.S.
It was protesting American draft dodgers going to Canada.

spent a flight from T.O. to Calgary with Burton Cummings. Great guy, humble and kind. Still wearing his Canadian tux.
Burton Cummings, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. This song is probably why the Guess Who were never inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame, because some people interpreted it as a Vietnam anti-war song.
Everything I had to say about this song has already been covered in other comments. LOL
Love the channel. You guys are doing great.
The lead guitar player went on to play with "Bachman Turner Overdrive". Another great band you need to have on your channel. "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" is a fun song from them.
Randy Bachman's guitar solos are what makes this song better than all subsequent covers of it.
I love watching your reactions because it’s so pure. No precise notions of what the songs are going to be like because most of the time you have never heard of the artist
I loved Burton voice soooo much! He continues to do concerts, now, at the age of 73. He never stops!
Burton after the Guess Who broke up went solo and had a number of hits (Stand Tall was one) and guitarist Randy Bachman formed BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive) and they had lots hits like Takin Care of Business , You Aint Seen Nothin Yet etc
