ABSOLUTELY! Grand Funk ROCKED “Some Kind Of Wonderful”! It wasn’t their song, they covered it, but they did it better than the original artist. Same with their version of “Locomotion”!
GFR did a concert at Shea Stadium (NY) in the 70’s and sold it out faster than the Beatles 65’ concert at Shea… This band is sooooo underrated and should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! (in my humble opinion)
This true, but the fact that they were sharing the billing with Humble Pie might also have helped. Mark Farner has written that when the band approached the stadium by helicopter, it was raining and Humble Pie were on stage. He could see Marriott out front and ,don't remember his exact quote, but basically, everyone was standing up and rocking SO HARD that he could literally see the stadium its self vibrating. In the early 70's, both these bands filled stadiums with 10's of thousands of fans. By the following year, the Pie were top billed every where they went. The drummer is Don Brewer. Sweet sweet Connie was a groupie. She passed away a few weeks ago. The lead guitar player Mark Farner has been one of my neighbors for going on thirty years. He is an absolutely kind and down to earth man. His family too. Mark has ten years on me but he still kicks it on stage like he did back then. Nothing funner than doing the Locomotion around the auditorium while Mark's cranking it out. Mark just recently sold out our local casino in under thirty minutes.

If you like singing drummers, you gotta listen to The Band. Watch The Night They Drive Old Dixie Down from The Last Waltz. No, Phil Collins is not the "prime example " of singing drummers. That distinction belongs to Levon Helm. 😁 Good actor too as Loretta Lynn's dad in Coal Miner's Daughter.
A hugely unapologetic band. They were admitting that the coolest things about being in a hit band were the girls and the toys you could now afford. LOL. Talking about bringing girls into their hotel and how the hotel detectives were cool and not to be seen. When they mention sweet, Sweet Connie was doing her act. She had the whole show and that's a natural fact. They were referring to a girl named Connie who was a famous (or maybe infamous) music groupie back in the day. She uhh let's say ... made herself available to any and all bands and their entourages who would come through her area. Sadly Miss Connie passed away just about a month ago at 66. She wanted to be famous and she "met" a lot of musicians and bands. She was also mentioned in a couple of other bands songs. The great musical days of the 60s and 70s had quite a cast of characters. Not all of them on stage.
Karen Carpenter was a singing drummer, at first, then they took her away from her drums and stuck her in front. She always considered herself a singing drummer, not a singer who drummed. When you get around to it, "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home" by GFRR is well worth listening to
Levon Helm, Phil Collins, Henley. Dave Grohl, Ringo (ok, admittedly he wasn’t the best at either) Brewer, Taylor Hawkins… there are a lot who have done it extremely well. You can add Paul McCartney too. He sang & played ALL instruments on Maybe I’m Amazed!
When you tuned your instruments for 1/2 an hour, smoked a cig, did a test riff for another 20 minutes while adjusting the stage lights....welcome to a 70's concert! I also just saw them about 4 years ago and it was one of the best shows I have seen in a long time! They sounded fantastic after all these years!
For three or four years in the early 70s there was no bigger band than Grand Funk Railroad. Their name was based on the local Grand Trunk Railroad that ran through Flint, the Michigan town they were from originally.
Someone crossed out Trunk on a railway overpass in Flint and painted Funk. This was early 70s. Sadly I forgot which road it was. Passed by all the time.
Love love love Grand Funk Railroad! My favorite bangers you should react to include: “Sin’s a Good Man’s Brother” “Aimless Lady” “Nothing is the Same” and if you feel up to a truly emotional devastating sad song… it’s “Mean Mistreater”. Lots of folks will recommend GFR’s more radio rock songs - which don’t get me wrong are solid - but if you want GFR at their alt funk rock best, it’s the songs above!
I was in HS when this came out. I was in NYC at the time. I loved GFR, but we had a lot of arguments in HS about it. Their mgmt advertised the band in times square and rock and roll purists criticized them for going commercial. They just were ahead of the crowd. Great band. Anytime we were on a trip and we got close I played closer to home and the kids (30's now) know ever note and word
One of the best 3 man bands in the late 1960s. Songs "Mean Mistreater"; "T.N.U.C."; " Inside Looking Out"; "Heart Breaker"; "Save the Land"; "Loneliness".
Would you please react to the song, "Get Ready" by Rare Earth? That's another song with the singer playing the drums at the same time. AND, another great song by Grand Funk Railroad is "Some Kind of Wonderful". I think y'all might like it, because it is a great song!
Sweet Connie is a real person, famous Rock n' Roll groupie who died recently. The kids would like "The Loco-Motion". I think you'd like "Bad Time" also!
You definitely need to react to “The Weight” by The Band for more of that drummer/singer vibe but also because its a great song! The Last Waltz version with The Staples Singers is a must see.
Love this tune, GFR has a great sound right in there with the early 70's...I also like "Some Kind Of Wonderful" and I'm Your Captain "... Since this song is about the band, I suggest a few songs about singers or bands talking about their experiences:: " Up In Smoke" by Blackberry Smoke "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner "Band On The Run" by Paul McCartney & Wings Thanks S.W.
The line about Connie in Little Rock early in the song was Connie Hamzy, one of the most famous and prolific groupies of all time. She was from Little Rock, and was forever immortalized by GFR. She just died last month.
Sweet sweet Connie, a real person, just passed away within the last month. Definitely have to do The Carpenters, a drummer that can SING!
Another group with the drummer singing lead is Rare Earth. Try I Just Want To Celebrate.
@@melodymcdonald2140 yes! I Just Want To Celebrate!
@Mark Palfenier, Karen Carpenter had one of the sweetest, pure, beautiful voice!
Come on ........yes she can play drums .....but come on one of the best drummers around......really.....wow
You must not know anything about drums
"I'm your captain/closer to home" and "shinin on" are a must listen. Also, "walk like a man" is one of my favorites.
Grand Funk was THE loudest concert I'd ever been to 1974! They just rock! 💙😱🎼🎸✌️
Cobo Hall by any chance? James Brown as the opening act? If so, we were there, and you are absolutely right!!!
Yep
I was front row in front of the speakers left of the stage.
They were formed in Flint Michigan
My favorite drum intro of all time.... So much energy!!!
No 80s kids trying to claim this song for the 80s lol They usally do by the 100s
Some Kind of Wonderful is a must listen by Grand Funk.
ABSOLUTELY!
Grand Funk ROCKED “Some Kind Of Wonderful”! It wasn’t their song, they covered it, but they did it better than the original artist. Same with their version of “Locomotion”!
for a long time this song was my
"fav of favs". It has everything a rock song needs.... and it makes you feel good inside and all over!!
GFR did a concert at Shea Stadium (NY) in the 70’s and sold it out faster than the Beatles 65’ concert at Shea…
This band is sooooo underrated and should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!
Young people today have mostly never heard of Humble Pie. Please do yourselves a favor and check them out. Sadly there is not much live video available here is one:

Long live the Pie! RIP Steve Marriott & Greg Ridley
Imagine how fast a Beatles' concert would have sold out in '70 at Shea. There were more rock fans by then and stadium shows were a regular thing.
@@cindyfalstrom7231 - yeah! Another vote for Humble Pie!
Rock and the roll at its best. 70's decade
Shout out to Sweet, Sweet Connie (aka Connie Hamzy), mentioned early in this song. She was probably the most famous (or infamous) groupie of the day. Made it with just about every mega group member there was. She was VERY popular! Just passed away this year. Rest In Peace, you wild child.
❤
great choice..."some kind of wonderful" next please!!!
Levon Helm is a fantastic lead singer, drummer. The Band!
RIP Levon 😞
Yes!!!
Most definitely a group that they need to listen to. Plus for a duet try The Band featuring the Staple Singers,-(The Weight)
@@joshsmith302 I keep requesting ... hopefully it's on their list!
@@kimberlyjenkins725 looks like a lot of people are suggesting the same in different places. I hope they like it. It's like Christmas morning to see Amber smile and Jordan's chin drop.😄😎
Rare Earth had a singing drummer. I think you would like this band. Rock with a very pronounced soul influence...
ruclips.net/video/3rsMB5cxPc8/видео.html
Sounded like Don too. Rare Earth sounded like Grand Funk.
Levon was great. The best drummer/vocalist was Pete Rivera who played in Rare Earth.

Grand Funk great band of the 70's partied to this song a lot. Of generations I've lived thru 60-70-80-90-2000. The 70's by far have the greatest music of all time. Not just my opinion been written about by experts over and over again. To roam around town windows down blasting ur radio to the song back then is to darn great to put in words u had to live it to express 😅😂😃
Connie Hamzy. Still lived In Little Rock. A radio show here I. Little Rock had her on and interviewed her a time or 2. Oh the stories she had.
@@jamesmcdaniel9601 I heard she really was a sweetheart. She said she had the highest respect for Mark he was one of the only ones to turn her down.
so you live on atkinson rd too?
@@patrickingalls5954 the few times I head her on the radio I believe she was. Regardless, how cool would it have to be to be immortalized in a song. And the first few lines to boot.
@@georgiabutka5096 no on Brubaker just up the hill. Where you at?
“Locomotion” and “Some Kind Of Wonderful” are two of my favorite GFR songs! You should definitely give them a listen!
You've got to do "The Band". A great lead singer/drummer in Levon Helm. Check out "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" or "Up On Cripple Creek"
This song and a cover of "Locomotion" originally recorded by Little Eva are probably my 2 favorite GFR songs.
When my mom died I found a vinyl record titled "The Very Best of Mark , Don , and Mel " I knew immediately this record was GFR
The cover of Locomotion holds a special memory for me. It was the first song I heard on the radio in my new Ford Pinto wagon on April 27, 1074.
Percussion player off to the side that you can't see is playing cowbell, triangle, etc. LOVE IT
Yet another great but often overlooked band.
I appreciate what you two are doing. Taking us down memory lane, and the appreciation for what we grew listening to. So for you Bobby Day,-(Rockin Robin), The Rivieras,-(California Sun) and Ben E. King,-(Stand by me). Thanks for bringing back the good times.
Absolutely Stand by me... and then Lennon's version. Love that song.
This along with The Loco-Motion were their biggest hits.
The singer and drummer is Don Brewer
Is that song still popular at the roller rinks?
Don't forget "Some kinda wonderful"
That's a cover.
Im your Captain/closer to home was their biggest hit
@@bobts5510 Closer to Home peaked at #22 in the US and #21 in Canada. We're An American Band and The Loco-Motion went to #1in the US and #4/#1 in Canada.
Triumphs drummer kills it on their song “When the lights go down”.
Hell Yeah!!! GIL had Almost as High Voice as Rik! There's only a handful of Bands that had Drummer-Lead & Backing Singers!!! Genesis, Grand Funk, Eagles, Mastodon...
Ahhhh Triumph, what a GREAT BAND!! And Blackfoot( sing know why, but they always seem to come to mind when I heart Triumph
@@bethrowe6927 Blackfoot rocks! I’ve got their entire Strikes album on my shop playlist.
Triumph is hugely underated.
Masterpiece full of life....
Your best reaction ever was Inside Looking Out!! J how could you not remember?!! Love you guys!!
Karen Carpenter Drummer and lead singer . You will LOVE Her !!!!
Yes, the Carpenters. Karen sings like an angel.
Always LOVED this song... but until recently had NO IDEA GFR did it! Wow! I feel a little like you guys do in your reactions, only I KNEW the song! Stellar recording!
This band is from like 20 minutes from where I grew up, and have lived for most of my life. They are really awesome.
Everyone moves with this song 😂
Didn't sweet Connie die this year?
Another big 70s song KEEP EM COMMING PLEEEEEASE LOL
An absolutely incredible band!
In the day they were one of the best if not the best
I grew up with this band as a teenager! It was an awesome time!
Grand funk railroad has got so many great songs ! Great song Rob And Amber grew up with them
And, I don't think WE'RE AN AMERICAN BAND is the best song on the album. That, I feel, is CREEPIN'.
Karen Carpenter was a singing drummer, at first, then they took her away from her drums and stuck her in front. She always considered herself a singing drummer, not a singer who drummed. When you get around to it, "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home" by GFRR is well worth listening to
I'm Your Captain is one of my favourite songs 🎵 ❤
They have another song I’d love for you to react to, it’s Some Kind of Wonderful 🥰
Edited to add they had two lead singers
Don Henley is the master of drumming while singing melodically! There’s a huge difference between singing staccato and melody! He’s amazing. 🌺✌️
I agree Don Henley is the best!
Kelly Keagy from Night Ranger was pretty good.
Remember that Boz Skaggs also started as a drummer. Incredible singer too.
Karen Carpenter?
All great songs!
Greatest drum intro of all time why are they not in the rock and roll hall of fame???
Great song !! Great Band !! 🤘
Lead singer is founder of the band, guitarist, Mark Farner. They are all
Talented. This song was a classic
70s classic.
mark farner lives in petoskey michigan
the drummers name is Don Brewer and the bass player is Mel Shacker and the guitarist is Mark Farner , great band .
Karren Carpenter was Avery talented drummer and singer rob squad from them 70dz
Grand Funk Railroad is my generation. 🥰🥰🔥🔥
Time proves the critics wrong every time!
One of the best 3 man bands in the late 1960s. Songs "Mean Mistreater"; "T.N.U.C."; " Inside Looking Out"; "Heart Breaker"; "Save the Land"; "Loneliness".
I saw this tour at MSG! They killed it.Iconic 70s power trio.
Just seen these guys this past weekend. Awesome show....only two of the original members are with them...Don and Mel
Saw them 2 weekends ago at Choctaw casino, Oklahoma. They were fantastic
I agree, Levon Helm was great.
This was one of my grandfather's favorite songs. I remember riding around with him in his old pickup blaring this.
"I'm Your Captain" a classic from GFR.....Mark Farner, lead guitarist, still playing today....great video...
The sound is much better in the recorded version. Sometimes live the sound sucks. ❤️😁
" Sweet; Sweet Connie " was an actual Real Woman they were singing about.
And the concert promoter in Omaha had 4 Mexican girls waiting for them at the hotel after the show.
Love this tune, GFR has a great sound right in there with the early 70's...I also like "Some Kind Of Wonderful" and I'm Your Captain "...
Since this song is about the band, I suggest a few songs about singers or bands talking about their experiences::
" Up In Smoke" by Blackberry Smoke
"Hot Blooded" by Foreigner
"Band On The Run" by Paul McCartney & Wings
Thanks
S.W.
"Queen Bee" is another cool GFR tune from the Heavy Metal soundtrack... by the way, every song on that album is good reaction material, imo..
S.W.
A truly underrated band, they have some amazing songs. Just love rocking out to them while driving.
Donny Brewer is the drummer, they are from flint Michigan seen them when I was 15.
Another great song of theirs *InideLookingOut* was actually written by *Eric Burdon* and they recorded it.
Their best I think.
The line about Connie in Little Rock early in the song was Connie Hamzy, one of the most famous and prolific groupies of all time. She was from Little Rock, and was forever immortalized by GFR. She just died last month.
"I'm Your Captain/ Closer to Home" is a Beautiful song
Sweet sweet Connie, a real person, just passed away within the last month. Immortalized by this song had to be exceptional to be noticed from the huge crowd, and even more so to have lyrics call her out by name. One of the best bands from the early 70's. Try "I'm your Captain", "Closer to Home". Their cover of the "Locomotion" is worth hearing also. Many others available if you're diving deep.
I played this record over and over as an 11 year old. I still love it.
