I grew up with this great Canadian band. They had so many hits such as "American Woman", "These Eyes", "No Time", "Laughing", "Undun", "Hand Me Down World", "Share The Land", "Bus Rider", "Star Baby", "Albert Flasher" etc. Burton Cummings has a great voice. One of the best out there. Randy Bachman later left to form Bachman Turner Overdrive & had many hits. And Burton Cummings had a great solo career with lots of great songs.
AMERICAN WOMAN! YES!!!!! Burton Cummings has the voice!
Yep. The concert version from the Guess Who Live At the Paramount.
Runnin' Back to Saskatoon was always a favorite. One of my all-time favorite groups.
I saw the Guess Who with Stepping wolf in 1986, American Women is another great song. ❤ 😍 💖 your Reaction.
I was probably about 4 years old when I heard these eyes but always loved it.
Me too!
You really should check out the studio version, a live version just can't duplicate everything about it, the placement of the instruments in the mix, the studio silent moment between transitions, Burton's voice, the round of verses at the end, this song is probably in my top 20 recordings of all time.
This!
While this is a good live version, I generally agree with you. I always recommend people listen to the studio version first so as to hear how a song was meant to be heard. Later they can listen to a live version. I've seen live versions recommended to people that were not worth hearing. The sound was so bad you could understand what was being sung. With rare exceptions, it's always the recorded version that becomes a hit, not the live version.
I would concur
I agree. Somehow, this recording does not do them and this song justice.
@@marks3750 I agree with that. There are a few exceptions, but I can’t think of any. :)
Burton has one of the best voices in rock. He is highly underrated as a vocalist!
As well as underrated as a pianist.
They should listen to Stand Tall. Burton Cummings alone and awe-inspiring.
two best male rock singers in my book: Steve Perry and Burton Cummings.
I've been saying same since 1970.
I’ve heard people, including John Lennon, who say he is Among the elite rock voices. Not underrated, just recency bias.
The guitarist for The Guess Who was Randy Bachman. He was responsible for writing a number of their hits. He left the group in 1970 due to health problems and wanting spend more time with his family. He got together with his younger brother Robbie Bachman and had Fred Turner join them and Bachman-Turner Overdrive was born in 1973.
Oh that’s interesting. i always knew the popular songs, but not really much about the bands.
BTO was an excellent band!
Who also taught Neil Young a lot about playing guitar
Love me some BTO. One of my favorite songs is you ain't seen nothin yet
@@js6729 bbbbbbbbaby
The Guess Who has an endless rabbit hole of amazing music.
Great way to put it!!!
One of my favorite solo Burton Cummings songs is Stand Tall.
😍

The Best
Sorry, I've got to say it
Again for the 3rd time here, Bar far one of the most Underappreciated vocalists of his era. Beautiful pipes on this guy! Burton Cummings never got the respect he deserved!
Ya we do say Sorry a Lot..lol
@@lifewuzonceezr Sorry, but I don't agree. : )
@@j.h.3777 You don't think this guy ranks @ least top 5 of his era? I request that you sit and listen to their greatest hits album very carefully again if you already haven't done so and maybe you will change your mind.😄 Happy Easter!
@@mikemaggio6429 I was responding to @life.... where she was saying that Canadians say sorry a lot by saying "sorry...." I was not talking about Burton Cummings whom I've seen twice in concert and has a fantastic and very appreciated voice. Happy Passover and Easter, eh.
@@j.h.3777 Canadian I'm assuming my friend? I also had the pleasure of seeing the band, but only once unfortunately. 1978 I think if I'm not mistaken, the years between 76 and 82 are a bit foggy for me like lol. What isn't foggy is my memory of seeing them at the War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo N.Y. Such a FANTASTIC show! Thanks for responding.
No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature is actually a collaboration between band members Burton Cummings, the lead singer and guitarist Randy Bachman, also of Bachman Turner Overdrive. Burton had written the "No Sugar Tonight" part and Bachman composed "New Mother Nature", and the two decided to merge their songs into the great one you've just reviewed. Awesome pick!
Live no sugar is just ok please please listen to the studio version, please check it out and you be the judge
Listen to studio version
Actually the other way around. Bachman wrote No Sugar (about an incident he observed) and Cumming wrote Mother Nature.
Actually, I believe the studio version of this tune is a bit better. Sounds less "muddy".
The Guess Who is quite possibly the biggest snub in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Dozens of hits.............
No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature was originally written as two songs: one written by lead singer Burton Cummings and the other by lead guitarist Randy Bachman. Since they were written in the same key, they combined them into one song.
Burton Cummings is an amazing performer.
Yes he is! I saw him twice in the late 70's, he is an all round entertainer!
For me, this is one of the bands very best songs ~ I favor the studio version but I'm glad you reacted to it.
Yeah, the studio version is better. Burton's voice is piercing in that!
definitely prefer the studio version.
Agreed
Agree with the one of their best songs, always loved Share the Land, great hippie vibes in that one
As with most songs from the era, live is not the way to go for first hearing. This was no exception. Now try the studio.
It is my opinion that you cheat yourself if you make a live version your introduction to a new song or band.
The studio version is head and shoulders above their live. Check it out.
I love Burton Cummings voice, just amazing.
Oh man, the studio version has so much more punch to it, and his vocals are so good. Definitely check it out.
Thank you for playing some Canadian greats👍🎶 A lot of Reactors skip these Bands, but you covered The Band, BTO, and Rush. and We Canadians who listen to you love you for it❤️
How about Loverboy? "Working for the weekend".
@@harrytryon6782 Yes! Loverboy ♥️
@@harrytryon6782 no
Yes we need more reactions to The Band....
@@gabrielvanhelsing8214 Love him! Ball and Chain was a favorite of mine too
Burton Cummings is one of the greatest and most distinctive vocalists of all time.
You should do a LOT of The Guess Who.
"Undun" will absolutely put a smile on your faces, nice surprise in this song
Always proud of my home town boys (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada). My husband grew up with Burton Cummings (lead singer) in the North end, they played pool together as teens. Burton has one of the best voices in rock. He went on to a single career try his “Stand Tall”. Randy Bachman (guitar” went on to form BTO ( Bachman-Turner Overdrive).try “Taking Care of Business”. Between all of them they had many hits!
So Lucky!
Cool story! (And not just because you are in Canada! 🙂)
Glad to see another Winnipeg local here in the comments
Fellow Winnipegger here! Randy Bachman graduated from my same high school, Garden City Collegiate :)
I Got busted on Portage and Main in the 80s for having one to many, and the cops where listening to the guess who on the radio.🇨🇦B.C
Burton Cummings has such a distinctive voice. Great band.
This is such a great song and Burton Cummings has such a fantastic voice. Another great Canadian band.
Live, doesn't sound as pure(?) as the studio version, but I would definitely see them live(back in the day)
Burton Cummings is the lead singer, a great voice!
Love love love singer Burton Cummings & he is best childhood friends with one of my favorite musicians of all time Randy Bachman. They wrote a lot of The Guess Who songs together. Oh my goodness No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature; These Eyes; American Woman; Hand Me Down World; No Time; Laughing.....
Another Canadian treasure are the “Tragically Hip”.
They were Canada’s secret gem
Yes!!!
The complete title is, "No Sugar Tonight / New Mother Nature."
A great song for them.
Massively underrated/underappreciated group - lots of great tunes that stand the test of time.
I usually recommend they do the live version but on this you would appreciate the song better with the studio version.
I actually think people should try to listen to the studio version first, but if you like it, then listen to live. But that’s just personal preference :)
@@G-grandma_Army Abso-freakin-lutely! Especially with a lot of older songs, some of the live recordings are just plain crap. Plus, when people like a song, typically they like the studio recording of the song, not some live thing, UNLESS it happens to be extraordinary, like Chicago 25 or 6 to 4 live at Tanglewood 1970. But those are the exceptions not the rule.
The Guess Who were a staple of am radio when I was a kid in the 60s. All of their songs are very memorable for me. They take back to a more simpler time. A great time to be a kid. The guitar player is Randy Bachman before Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Birton Cummings is the singer and piano player. He has had a fairly prolific career after this band. They have reunited several times over the years. These guys are not in the current version of the band. Great songs and great memories.
Really need to listen to The Grass Roots! A great 60's band!
🤩🤩🤩🤩
Gotta say, J's airdrum skills have leveled up lately.
BTW, The Guess Who's track "She's Come Undone" is soooooooo good and needs to be heard.
Oh Yes, I'm in junior high again, and loving these guys. Burton Cummings is a such a great singer and pianist. What a treasure. I love this. Their tune "Share The Land" would be great for you to hear, and is one of the first songs I learned on guitar. Burton is quite a character. There is a video on YT of him impersonating Gordon Lightfoot doing Rod Stewart's "Maggie May." Thanks guys.
I am going have to check that out. LOL
@@debbieplato5107 ruclips.net/video/QuPLz4RI5V0/видео.html Here is one he did when he was a bit older. He's got Gordo down.
I sooooo love Burton Cummings, the lead singer. I wore out his solo albums!! ❤
I must say you have best taste!!! Same here, I couldn't get enough of "Stand Tall" and "I'm Scared." Still can't.
I totally agree with everything you said! Loved his solo work!
@@janicetrimmell6897 - Awww, Shanandora! As usual, you are way too sweet! Especially, when your musical knowledge runs rings around mind. As far as what we prefer, I think we were separated at birth! LOL
The two songs you mentioned are wonderful and amoung my favorites, but I also played the heck out of "Your Back Yard" and his cover of Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Nothing Rhymed".

@@DianaJG8 Oh Good Grief I love these two. The lyrics all came back to me. Another stellar album from the year 1976!!! If we weren't separated at birth, we should have at least known each other in high school. I went through this thing around Thanksgiving where I had to listen to "Stand Tall" every night. I've also done that at various times with "Too Much Heaven" to fill my head with uplifting thoughts. The song I wake up to is "Nights on Broadway." I hope you are already asleep this night. I am headed there.
I heard that one of the band members saw a couple arguing and the lady told her husband or boyfriend whatever that he was getting no sugar Tonight and that's how that song got started when they were getting their album together they had two little songs no sugar tonight and leave no mother nature pushed for time they combined two
Yep...Randy Bachman (Guitarist) tells that story.
Listen guys ! If your wanting a hidden gem of a song just as you were shocked about Mr Big the other day . Here’s one for you and trust me you’ll be shocked. Don’t say I didn’t tell you so . Do the original video of ,
Cheap Trick “ The Flame “ your missing out if you don’t react to this . It’s Fire 🔥
The story of the name No Sugar Tonight was based on an encounter on the streets of San Francisco. A young man was walking down the street when this old VW Beetle came down the street. The car stopped and his girl friend got out and started bawling out the guy. “You should be looking for a job or at home helping me and not wandering the streets. Get in the car.” And as he was getting in the car she said ”And another thing, there will be no sugar tonight”.
This live version is pretty good, although it's lacking the full effect when compared to the studio/FM radio version. The Guess Who baby!!! Really good band, and really good song. You gotta hear their song *AMERICAN WOMAN* next.
As a rule, I always say never react to a live video. However, there are definitely some major exceptions and this is one of them (though the studio version is better). The Guess Who nailed this whole show that you're watching! The guitarist is Randy Bachman, you already reacted to Bachman-Turner Overdrive. I would suggest that you listen to Undun by the Guess Who.
Undun is my favorite - it really shows Burton to be the singer that he is.
@@billburkhead9737 agree, and my favorite as well.
Not too many bands were capable of combining 2 songs into 1... and not just playing them back to back like everyone else! They were one of our better Canadian bands! Great reaction!👍🎶
I loved this song back in the day and I love it now. Burton Cummings is an upbeat, really cool guy and it comes out in his voice. That was Randy Bachman of Bachman Turner Overdrive. Great guitar player.
Great song! Burton Cummings had a great solo career as well.
I absolutely love this band and this song thanks for picking it
More please! ☮️💜
I grew up with this band in Canada as well. Burton Cummings (lead singer) is on my all time list of the best male voices ever!!!!
Guy with guitar....Randy Bachman from Bachman-Turner Overdrive also.
and they have lot's of hits.
Laughin'
Share The Land
Undun
Bus Rider
No Time
Now you're hitting stride with the Classics!! 😎
Another great reaction yet another song from the soundtrack to my life and times. I loved your reaction to "These Eyes" (approx. 6 months ago) so I think that you'd likely enjoy these Guess Who tunes:
"American Woman" (You may have heard a cover of this one, there have been several a great one by Lenny Kravitz)
"Laughing"
"Hand Me Down World"
"No Time"
"Undun" (Randy Bachmann's guitar work on this song is spectacular. His Jazz roots are showing.)
and for something a little lighter, "Clap For The Wolfman" (feat. Wolfman Jack, a famous radio DJ from the '50s - '70s} and
"Running Back To Saskatoon"
Clap for the Wolfman!
The Guess Who - Shaking all over - These Eyes - Laughing - Clap for the Wolfman
According to Burton Cummings, whose show I attended a few year back, he mentioned that this mash up came about because he and Randy Bachman were writing this song and had different ideas about how it should go so they mashed up their individual versions. Probably one of the first mash ups to be done.
They had this name because when they first came out the record company wanted to present them as being like a mystery British band( the British Invasion popularity being at its height)
RABBIT HOLE
EDIT:
please listen to the recording version of this you’re so much of the blend of instruments and voices. Their drummer is awesome but he plays so quietly and less you listen to the recorded you can’t really begin to understand how good the man is so please do yourself a favor because it will certainly put it on your playlist if you hear the recorded version. Peace love and joy to you and yours
The thing that I really love is you can understand every word. No guessing.
At the Indiana State Fair in 1971, I got to see The Guess Who perform live and saw what I considered the best band lead by the most powerful singer I ever hoped to see…Burton Cummings. Lot of fun!
I actually like the studio one on this. Great song
these guys are awesome!! love em
check out their song Clap For The Wolfman... 😄
I listened to them all the time when I was young, even my mom liked their music. ❤
"These Eyes" is such a beautiful, sad song. Worth a listen.
Burton Cummings is an incredible writer, he even released a book of poems.
Hey there J and Amber , this is one of my most favorite songs. You Do however have to listen to the studio version because it rocks so much harder. This sound might sound a little familiar because the guitarist is Randy Bachman of Backman, Turner Overdrive , BTO. He left to form BTO. And I know you like them.
So, glad you finally got to listen to this. Such a fun song and combining the two songs at the same time. Great song. It’s one of my favorites.
Let’s get Rockin! Incredible band
The Guess Who was another reason I wanted to pick up a guitar. I got my first for Christmas when I was 7 years old. Went to a school of music a year later. I wanted to learn Gordon Lightfoot and the Guess Who first. My very cool teacher said; "okay sure". I learned their music freehand first, and then I learned how to read the music and theory after. I am a grandmother now, but I am 8-9 years old when I listen to these greats. Lori.C.
Grew up listening them and still do, great pick guys
My favorite tune by Burton Cummings is titled "Burch Magic". I saw him live with Ringo's All-Star Band that included Ringo Starr and Joe Walsh (They played "Rocky Mountain Way"). Half of the Eagles played in that concert.
My favorite tune by The Guess Who is "Heartbroken Bopper". "My favorite album by The Guess Who is "Live at the Paramount"
One Of The Greatest Song Writers & Singers Ever BURTON CUMMINGS !!!!!!!!
When I was growing up I wasn't able to buy a lot of albums, so when I did it was something special. I had this one, a couple of Three Dog Night, Kenny Rogers and The First Edition, and a couple of Neil Diamond. I probably had a couple more, but these are the ones I remember....
It's so fun to watch the two of you! ☺ If you have not done them yet, 3 of my favorites are "American Woman", "These Eyes" and "Undone". All massive hits! Thanks Jay & Amber, you made me smile! 😃🥰
My fav from the guess who!! Again I think I can say not a bad song from this terrific band!! His voice tho! Thx guys!!
I had the pleasure around 1990 to enjoy a concert with Bachman Turner Overdrive and The Guess Who together. My wife and I were in our late twenties at the time. The concert was surreal because not only was the music great but instead of the usual audience filled with teenagers in ripped jeans and T-shirts, this audience was filled with people our age and older dressed in suits and evening gowns. Crazy !
Love this great Canadian Iconic band!!! 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦
With the exception of "Three Dog Night" no one deserves and has been so disrespected by the RRHOF more than "The Guess Who" with multiple memorable and historical hits like These Eyes, Undun, No Time, Laughing, American Woman etc...etc... These guys need to be recognized 🎸☮️💕
F... the RRHOF! It's a bullshit organization that's all politics & money. Watch Steve Miller go after
them at the press interviews right after he was inducted. Yan Wenner is a piece of crap. So many incredible rock & roll deserving artists have been snubbed by them yet freakin' rap people are getting inducted. RRHOF is a joke!
RRHOF is run by a group of morons. I completely agree that TDN and The Guess Who are the two most egregious snubs by the RRHOF.
Another excellent song from them because there are many. "She's Come Undone" from the Midnight Special is AWESOME.
"Undone" is great. But, STUDIO version please. No more live version. Thanks.
THIS song right here! That's all I gotta say.... BRILLIANT
The first part of the song, the No Sugar Tonight part, was inspired by an overheard argument. One of the band members was seated in a car waiting for someone & a group of really tough dudes were talking tough amongst themselves. All of the sudden a woman drove up & the guys dispersed leaving this one poor dude to confront his significant other alone. Suddenly, the guy turned from super tough to a cowed, timid boyfriend as she verbally berated him for whatever injustice she felt he'd committed. As she's cussing him out & screaming at him, she tells the guy, "...and you can beat there's no sugar tonight for you!". In that moment & single phrase, a song idea was born!
I'm so glad you did this, The Guess Who is one of my favorite bands and I never get tired of them. You could pick up almost any song off of their greatest hits album and everyone is astonishing. And of course they have a lot more than what's on the greatest hits. All of those songs were in constant rotation on the radio for years. And I love how as they get into the second song, in the chorus, the so-called scatting, is basically from the first song and then at the end they combined it even more with the backing vocals echoing lines from the first song in a round. The round is even more complex and fleshed-out on the studio recording, it's worth a listen. And we should definitely note how great these guys are, not only as musicians but as backing vocalists as well. Burton Cummings (incredible singer) is the lead singer most associated with the majority of their career, although they did have a different one earlier and that stuff is good as well.
But not only could the other guys sing incredible backing vocals, the arrangements of those backing vocals are really wonderful. They don't just sing along with every phrase,, they emphasize certain words and parts of the phrases and then of course they do that round at the end.
The Guess Who are one of my absolute favourite bands! I especially love this track. Thanks for the walk down memory lane y'all. ❤️
Saw them live....FANTASTIC
2:00
so cool to see Amber have her ear tickled . You can tell immediately. Such a magnificent song
One of my favourite Guess who songs, especially like how at the end of the song they are blending them together. There are lots of Burton's songs from his solo career, "Stand Tall" "I will play a rhapsody" , and "Break it to them gently" are among my favourites of his.
One of my all time favorites
bands. Saw them 3 times in concert and each show was better than the last. The guitar player is Randy Bachman who started Bachman Turner Overdrive when he left the guess who. But years later they reunited.
That was actually 2 songs of theirs that they incorporated into one song. It was great way back when.
By far the most underrated band… they were amazing! I love them!
Love the Guess Who! You should always try to find a live video!
I've been waiting for this one for ages (and City of New Orleans by Arlo Guthrie)
You should now listen to the studio version of this song. Its more refined (as you would expect) but this live version was very good.
Wife here..Loved This Song back in the day!!..Will still Rock Out to it!!..Always appreciate your Musicality as you present and review these awesome songs!! Awesome!
I've jammed this a billion times and I still get goosebumps every time
I have one problem with this song , it's too short. I love that you love it also.
There really wasn't any BAD music for the most part from the 60's to the 80's.
Fun fact, to get discovered many of these old bands sent in their music on casettes to the music industry in the hopes of being chosen. However hundreds of tapes could be sent in. So with the hopes of standing out they wrote Guess Who on it. When the record executives seen it of course they had no idea who it was and felt they had to play it to see if they recognized who was playing. Hence their name, the Guess Who.
it's amazing how many of these lyrics I recall so many years later. I'm so happy to see a younger generation appreciatiing the amazing music we grew up listening to.
Say it with me.........Studio version FIRST. Studio version FIRST. Studio version FIRST. Studio version FIRST!!!!!
YES! More Guess Who is always welcome. For a beautiful song try "Do You Miss Me, Darling" I would also recommend "Running Back To Saskatoon"
Many don't give this great singer the credit he deserved, back in his prime he was at the top as far as male singers go; totally off the wall great voice!!!
Randy Bachman is the Guitarist. BTO!
“NoTime” “Share The Land” “American Woman” “These Eyes” “Laughing/ Undun” “Hand Me Down World” “Shakin All Over”
Studio version is much better! 🔥
I don't know how you can possibly believe that.
Yay! My favorite Guess Who song. Hope ya like it. EDIT: Glad y'all liked it!😊
Same here
Mine too! Love it
I know I was just a kid of 9 but I remember my older brother's sisters and cousins watching when a Canadian won the best new vocalist of the year and I think 1970 I can't remember but I know he sang for The Guess who or he was the lead singer and I'm hearing these songs now and I'm going yeah that was it so thank you God bless this was a childhood dream
Little piece of fun information- The guy playing guitar is Randy Bachman who was one of the co-founders of Bachman Turner Overdrive ( BTO ) and he really stutters in real life. You'll find it evident in BTO's " Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" The line in it was really supposed to be a drawn-out note, but he kept stuttering it during takes, and the producer said, okay, it sounds good anyway, so let's just keep it in!?" And so there you have it!
