honestly, whistle is the song that really made me get into blackpink. As a korean who heard so many generic kpop songs, whistly was so fresh and new, it sounds a bit hollow/eerie and I loved it. While their newer songs are still bops, I wish they would come out with songs like whistle. Something that doesn't have to necessarily go hard every time or have lyrics that are always about haters etc. (Don't get me wrong, I love their hard hitting songs too ex. Kill this love, Shut down, Pretty Savage, etc). BUT it's always their older songs that I come back to, I loveeed Stay and Whistle. Even their older choreo seems more creative than the newer ones, but I get it, they're getting older and it gets harder on their bodies to sustain hardcore choreo

They debuted with two songs Boombayah and Whistle!. Boombayah is a song mostly describes their BLACK side (savage, girl crush, pop etc..) and whistle describes their PINK side (cute, franky, feminine etc..) which is where their name BLACKPINK was born.

You have to realize these girls train for YEARS just to hopefully be able to have a chance to try in a K Pop group. They gave their lives to the company who trained them and they rose to the top of all the other girls. So the fact their first music video and the quality of that first song doesn't seem like a first is well deserved. They kind of are seasoned veterans in their business as they have been working their asses off behind the scene for many years.

I recommend y'all listening to the latter since its my fav from those two n its sound is actually rlly unique. I would also love to see a “Playing with fire” MV reaction since its been my fav bp title track for a while alongside “Lovesick Girls”. I dont think they're much ur style but they're absolute BOPS. Thanks for reacting to Whistle. This is still considered as one of the best debuts in kpop---this won numerous awards in various music shows. It also the only debut song that garnered a Perfect All-Kill (in Korean music charts, this means simultaneously reaching #1 on the real-time, daily, and weekly charts). Quite the contrary though, THIS is their voice. This was not supposed to be their debut song since their entertainment company felt that this is too "empty" for kpop audience (as kpop is known for bombastic sounds and heavy production) but the girls, together with their producer Teddy, fought for this to be their debut song. True enough, this won them a lot of awards and set them as a group that can bring their own style to the table. Also, fun fact, it was Jisoo who was whistling. This also has an acoustic version, which is really cool.

It's an encore performance so the vibe is different. It is also in Japanese and the English raps are different as well. It is a completely different experience than the M/V and hits hard.

I didn't expect for you guys to react to this and was surprised but grateful for it. Going back to their debut is the best way to see and understand how their songs mature to what they are now and "Shutdown" has most of these older videos in it. Well, Boombayah next and work from there on.
Blackpink has come far from their start 6yrs ago. And as Teddy stated in their Netflix documentary it was not at all expected. However if you go back over their 6yrs and watch the growth of the group as well as its individual members you will realize that what YG created was by pure brilliance or just dumb luck but either way it's a once in a generation group of hyper talented women with the charisma to match. And the fact that they clearly, and obviously love, adore and protect each other just adds to their charm and appeal. With that said Shut Down, by their own words ends this 6yr era and begins what I refer to as Blackpink version 2.0. Born Pink is new music for them and I'm excited to see where they go with these new themes. As always a great review!

In Kpop, record labels recruit hundreds of young kids at auditions and just off the street every year. They mostly go into dorms where they start training and are called trainees. They start dance lessons, vocal lessons, some do school, most start English lessons, interview lessons and even how to perform on stage. They are reviewed every month to decide to keep or cut. Those that remain every month, keep training for the chance to be put in a group to "debut". Some train for months and some train for multiple years. Kpop singles are released on TV music programs in Korea, not really radio. Kpop starts on TV music shows.
Kpop really is a visual medium with the music TV shows and merch compared to the west the song is all there is hoping to get on the radio or Spotify or Pandora rotation.

‘Whistle’ would fit their sound just as well on the latest album as it did on their debut. Don’t forget the “Pink” side of BLACKPINK. They are both pretty and savage. Your analysis is understandable if you’re introduced to ‘Ddu-Du Ddu-Du’ ‘How You Like That’ ‘Kill This Love’ etc. There is a certain structure there that seems familiar. Yet keep in mind their debut had a smooth hip hop vibe in ‘Whistle’ and a club song in ‘Boombayah’ while their early track ‘Lovesick Girls’ is 80’s bubblegum pop. A sound shared with their current song ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah’. Debut ballads like ‘You Never Know’ and current ballads like ‘Happiest Girl’. Then of course each girl brings their own artistic influence, like Lisa’s swag, but we can’t forget that Rosé is an Indie Pop Princess at heart who is content to sit on the beach with an acoustic and rely on her musicianship. We can compare her solo sound like ‘Gone’ to early works written by Jennie like ‘Stay’. Of course they bring that 90’s East Coast/West Coast flow they were raised on as a result of Teddy’s influence... But just don’t be so quick to put BLACKPINK into a box. There isn’t one voice that defines them.

Boombayyah (sp) came out at the same time. When you watch that you'll understand the later videos, but the quietness of Whistle is also a big part of their skill and artistry. Not every song needs to be a 'banger.' From what I have heard, the women fought to get this song, Whistle, released. I think that they wanted a softer side to be part of their name from the beginning. A little black, a little pink, eh? Sure, record execs want every song to be a hard hitting smash, but they were also building a large' brand' here that allows for a wide range of songs. And of marketing away from music.
Don't forget the 5th BlackPink member Production director, manager and mentor, Teddy Park. He had his own boy group in his youth and followed that with the production, manager and mentor of the top 4 member girl crush group at the time, 2NE1, before they disbanded and were replaced by BlackPink.
This is Blackpink fresh outta the gate!! The company didn't like this song. They thought it was too soft and too slow. They wanted a super badass 2NE1 type girl group. But Teddy, their producer was so sure of it that he AND THE GIRLS stood up for it. They said IT HAS TO BE THIS SONG!!! It has to be this one. It's going to land so strong and original, That song with those vocals. If you wanna know how tight a group they were? They literally ain't nobody yet. They ain't released nothing as a group. For them to stand up and say, yeah, no! We think it should be this one. It's a kind of swag and confidence that just does NOT exist for young asian girls. I'm sure it was Teddy saying, if we all stand up together and urge them, they might listen to us. They were right. People never got over Whistle. It was a double punch. Funny that Jisoo is doing the whistling sample you hear on the track. She does it in a documentary. You can hear her doing that whistling tune as they are getting make up done.
Whistle is one of my favourites by them and I absolutely LOVE the anti drop. I was so happy to see them going back to anti drops in their most recent songs, I’ve literally been waiting for it because of Whistle lmao.

If you are into changeups I really recommend listening to the acoustic version of this song, it highlights that softer side people have mentioned and I listen to it all the time on my way to work. I recommend checking out "Boombayah" and "Playing With Fire" MVs next then "Crazy Over You" 'Kick It" and "Don't Know What To Do". There aren't MVs for the last three but a Live version or the Lyrical Videos would be good choices.

I didn't expect for you guys to react to this and was surprised but grateful for it. Going back to their debut is the best way to see and understand how their songs mature to what they are now and "Shutdown" has most of these older videos in it. Well, Boombayah next and work from there on.
Blackpink has come far from their start 6yrs ago. And as Teddy stated in their Netflix documentary it was not at all expected. However if you go back over their 6yrs and watch the growth of the group as well as its individual members you will realize that what YG created was by pure brilliance or just dumb luck but either way it's a once in a generation group of hyper talented women with the charisma to match. And the fact that they clearly, and obviously love, adore and protect each other just adds to their charm and appeal. With that said Shut Down, by their own words ends this 6yr era and begins what I refer to as Blackpink version 2.0. Born Pink is new music for them and I'm excited to see where they go with these new themes. As always a great review!

In Kpop, record labels recruit hundreds of young kids at auditions and just off the street every year. They mostly go into dorms where they start training and are called trainees. They start dance lessons, vocal lessons, some do school, most start English lessons, interview lessons and even how to perform on stage. They are reviewed every month to decide to keep or cut. Those that remain every month, keep training for the chance to be put in a group to "debut". Some train for months and some train for multiple years. Kpop singles are released on TV music programs in Korea, not really radio. Kpop starts on TV music shows.
Kpop really is a visual medium with the music TV shows and merch compared to the west the song is all there is hoping to get on the radio or Spotify or Pandora rotation.

‘Whistle’ would fit their sound just as well on the latest album as it did on their debut. Don’t forget the “Pink” side of BLACKPINK. They are both pretty and savage. Your analysis is understandable if you’re introduced to ‘Ddu-Du Ddu-Du’ ‘How You Like That’ ‘Kill This Love’ etc. There is a certain structure there that seems familiar. Yet keep in mind their debut had a smooth hip hop vibe in ‘Whistle’ and a club song in ‘Boombayah’ while their early track ‘Lovesick Girls’ is 80’s bubblegum pop. A sound shared with their current song ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah’. Debut ballads like ‘You Never Know’ and current ballads like ‘Happiest Girl’. Then of course each girl brings their own artistic influence, like Lisa’s swag, but we can’t forget that Rosé is an Indie Pop Princess at heart who is content to sit on the beach with an acoustic and rely on her musicianship. We can compare her solo sound like ‘Gone’ to early works written by Jennie like ‘Stay’. Of course they bring that 90’s East Coast/West Coast flow they were raised on as a result of Teddy’s influence... But just don’t be so quick to put BLACKPINK into a box. There isn’t one voice that defines them.

Boombayyah (sp) came out at the same time. When you watch that you'll understand the later videos, but the quietness of Whistle is also a big part of their skill and artistry. Not every song needs to be a 'banger.' From what I have heard, the women fought to get this song, Whistle, released. I think that they wanted a softer side to be part of their name from the beginning. A little black, a little pink, eh? Sure, record execs want every song to be a hard hitting smash, but they were also building a large' brand' here that allows for a wide range of songs. And of marketing away from music.
Don't forget the 5th BlackPink member Production director, manager and mentor, Teddy Park. He had his own boy group in his youth and followed that with the production, manager and mentor of the top 4 member girl crush group at the time, 2NE1, before they disbanded and were replaced by BlackPink.

This is Blackpink fresh outta the gate!! The company didn't like this song. They thought it was too soft and too slow. They wanted a super badass 2NE1 type girl group. But Teddy, their producer was so sure of it that he AND THE GIRLS stood up for it. They said IT HAS TO BE THIS SONG!!! It has to be this one. It's going to land so strong and original, That song with those vocals. If you wanna know how tight a group they were? They literally ain't nobody yet. They ain't released nothing as a group. For them to stand up and say, yeah, no! We think it should be this one. It's a kind of swag and confidence that just does NOT exist for young asian girls. I'm sure it was Teddy saying, if we all stand up together and urge them, they might listen to us. They were right. People never got over Whistle. It was a double punch. Funny that Jisoo is doing the whistling sample you hear on the track. She does it in a documentary. You can hear her doing that whistling tune as they are getting make up done.
Whistle is one of my favourites by them and I absolutely LOVE the anti drop. I was so happy to see them going back to anti drops in their most recent songs, I’ve literally been waiting for it because of Whistle lmao.

If you are into changeups I really recommend listening to the acoustic version of this song, it highlights that softer side people have mentioned and I listen to it all the time on my way to work. I recommend checking out "Boombayah" and "Playing With Fire" MVs next then "Crazy Over You" 'Kick It" and "Don't Know What To Do". There aren't MVs for the last three but a Live version or the Lyrical Videos would be good choices.
