    I just finished this up. I got a bit of water in the valley, so I dumped the oil. Ran some new oil for the first hour of test. Now, it's time to flush the old coolant, oil, filter, and BOOM, done. Thanks again for helping me out. I took a pics as I went, but missed a couple important shots. Your vid had them. Very much appreciated this.

    Did this job over this weekend, plus upgraded to MPFI. Took my time, and cleaned the machined surfaces with a razor blade. Ended up breaking the heater hose fitting - had to chip it out and chase threads with a 1/2" NPT tap.
    The bit about using a long screwdriver to back off off the oil pump drive to align the distributor gear was especially helpful. 96 K1500 Suburban 5.7. Runs like a champ - no more leaks and no CEL! Thanks for posting this video.

    I'm watching this series for the second time, you mentioned it in your latest video, so I thought I'd have another look. I think we discussed the torque thing with an extension, anyway, It doesn't matter with a socket end extension only if you extend the length of the handle, then it makes a difference. Check with the physics guys, they know. Just commenting again for the new watchers who might be interested.

    I think your video was great and I really appreciate your time for showing how it's done. Getting ready to replace mine. My truck actually blew the intake gasket while I was driving. Smoke poured out and the motor and it just died. Got it home and thought the motor was locked up but pulled the plugs and it blew all the A/F out of the cylinders. Check compression still looking good. Wish me Luck!!!!!!!!!

    You do not have to change the torque specs if your adding a socket extension you do if you add length to the wrench

    Great video. Getting ready to do my 96 K1500. I was at the auto parts store and decided to stop and have them put a pressure gauge on it to try to see the leak. Make a long story short, got 1 mile away from the store and it started pouring out smoke. Motor quit running so I guess they finished blowing the gasket. When I got home I the motor wouldn't turn over so removed plugs and the cylinders were full of A/F. Cranked it for a while to clear out A/f. Apparently it was at the left rear and we couldn't see it. Wish me luck!!!!!!!

Watched your vids two years ago when I replaced the heads now Im doing the lower intake gasket again I used the same crap ones installed in this video .Purchased the Metal ones this time and made sure i placed plenty of Gasket on the valleys.Distributor has to be the worst part to me

  • @robinsonsauto

    Thank you, lots of older models came with valley gasket seals, they had issue with them and most mechanics would not take the chance re installing do to come backs, therefore they started using silicone as you seen me do, and as you noticed the manufacturer uses silicone as well they started doing the same

    This video was spot on. I had the worst case scenario my gasket let go and dumped water (antifreeze} into the lifters area. The intake underside and all the rest of the motor looked like runnier baby poo. It took me a few long hours and 3 gallons of kerosene to clean that mess out. I am OCD about stuff like this. And as you said the heater quick disconnect was bad, it broke off when I slipped and fell toward the intake and hit it with my hand. That was a big pain to deal with because I had to drill out and re tap it.I did 3 oil & filters changes before putting in the final oil & filter. The one thing that I am still worried about is the temp is running a higher than it did before. ( about 15-18 degrees higher ) do you have any idea why? I made no changes in that area. I run a 60/40 mix. PS I had two small clamp brackets left over. (LOL)

    Good questions, this one I had previously switched out I go through a complete flush process, would recommend doing the same if you decide to switch,
    as far as oil pump lining up, one one think it should, however it just seems to be off slightly, its not much barely turn it back just a tad then it will fall in, sometimes it will go in without turning

    I just change the upper and lower gaskets on my 1997 gmc 2500 and everything went smoothly. No more coolant leak... HOWEVER, now the engine stalls out when I give it any gas or it just stalls out by itself.
    could I have messed up the distributor install? I did have a bunch of coolant still in the lines and I remember it leaked a bunch when I initially separated the intake. As a result I change the oil again (lots of coolant came out). I can't think of anything else I could have screwed up, but crazier things have happened. please help!

    Awesome video Will! Thanks for the upload... I'm afraid I'm looking at doing this job in the very near future. I have a slight leak at the rear of the motor and can't determine it's exact location. This job makes me think the lower intake gasket is the culprit! Any other suggestions? If you mentioned it before I missed it but, why did you do away with the DexCool? My '97 Suburban has 220k on it and I've only done the injectors & upper intake so far. Kind of wished I would have went back thru all your videos before now and probably done both at the same time since it looks like you have to do the same work! Thanks again for the upload.

      Yes sir. that's the best way to go. the individual injector legs of the spider only go one way. doing the swap off the truck helps you see it better. just make sure the legs are laying right and not in a bind. trust me! good luck.

    Hi, I'm about to have this done and that's why I watched this video. I'm not at all qualified to perform this kind of work, but I like to be able to envision and intellectually understand this process, so thanks. My question is: How long did this take from start to finish, and I mean the actual work time? Also, is it advisable to replace the upper gasket at the same time? I have 103K on my 5.7 vortec now. Thank you and good work.

    • @mr.fatbasstard648
      @mr.fatbasstard648 8 лет назад +5

      Not sure if you're going to get a response from Robinson Auto. But here's my two cents worth of a response. YES it's advisable to replace the gaskets on the upper intake at that time. He may have done it and just not included that in the video. The Fel-Pro gasket kit comes with the lower intake and upper intake gaskets and two fuel line gaskets. As far as how long it takes to do the job. It's anywhere between three and five hours depending on how much you really want to clean up and repair or replace. When I did mine the access was simple so I installed a new water pump alternator thermostat EGR valve..... if yours was leaking water the cause is more than likely dex-cool!!! Do not use this type of coolant in your system once you replace the intake manifold gasket. Use an organic alternative coolant. Your new gaskets should be able to withstand the Dex coolant but I still wouldn't advise using it.

    • @ahumm8280
      @ahumm8280 7 лет назад

      WendelltheSongwriter In my humble opinion, I would not replace the upper intake gasket unless it is either leaking or the spider injector is being replaced. I would just check tighten the bolts only with a torque wrench.

  • @kdeh21803

    Before I get started on such a repair, why was it necessary to remove one valve cover?

    • @ahumm8280

      ChaplainK because intake makes contact with valve covers when removing. If you remove one them it can removed from from the engine.

    No need to go through all that stabbing the distributor. If you catch the gears on the cam all you have to do is turn the engine over till it drops down into the oil pump. Your ignition timing will be fine as long as you have those gears caught on your cam and it'll drop right down when you line up the oil pump drive with the pump.

      really depends on wat all your goin to do..if just gaskets ..depending if your going to do it or somebody...gasket kit run i think20-40,,probally 300-400..it cost me $1000 in parts and $400 for labor, but i did gaskets, spark plugs, plug wires dist cap and rotor, new radeator, water pump, then your fluids,you will want to change your oil out.,

    Decent video, but you are giving out bad info on torquing bolts. You can use any length of extension without it changing the torque applied. The torque is calculated by the lever length, and an extension does nothing to change lever length.

      Then you should probably torque down your head bolts with a regular 3/8 drive using the longest extension you can find. Let us know how it goes.

    Please dont buy the same flimsy manifold gasket,Use the fel-pro Way beefier gasket and will last the life of the engine.

    Looks pretty clean under the hood. How long does the silicone need to set before turning the engine on? Thanks for the video!
