    Thank you for taking the time to video tape this crucial fix! I am going to perform this on my 2001 Chevy Astro AWD as soon as it warms up here in Colorado! Also, the clogged coolant ports, does that have anything to do with the type of antifreeze used? For example, green or orange in this specific engine. At the end of the day, which antifreeze was in this vehicle? Thanks!!

    • @thediyyardie7192
      @thediyyardie7192  7 месяцев назад +1

      @Elservio, much thanks for the compliments on the video, and yes you right in that the type of antifreeze could play a part in the accumulation I would call it instead of clog, my reason is, the way the intake manifold was designed, that area is actually a dead end for the coolant, it doesn't flow through, you will see what I mean once you perform the teardown. But yes, I can see some of these latest types of coolant doing that..

    Hi Yardie! I’m doing this same job on my 2000 Astro. I already got it all apart and planning to clean and reassemble tomorrow. How did you get the intake manifold back on without messing up the gasket. I figure try to drop it straight down without sliding but seems it may be difficult!

    • @thediyyardie7192
      @thediyyardie7192  Год назад +6

      @Leslie Howard, I actually had to get the help of another person, I stayed on the inside with the other outside in front of the truck, he held the front of the manifold up while I lifted the rear and guided it into position..

    Wonderful job Yardie, but I'm catching the blues on the ac bracket. I loosened up the front 2 bolts and loosened up a nut on the ac compressor bracket in the front but it does not move enough at all to wedge it like you said with the extension. how did you make enough room to get it out of the way cause that is the last bolt I have to get to. Im so close but sooo far.

    • @thediyyardie7192
      @thediyyardie7192  Год назад

      I first removed all the a/c compressor bolts so I could position it out the way, there are about 5 bolts in all if I can remember that I loosened on the bracket, 3 to top front, 1 to lower front and another at the bottom rear of the bracket, that one is actually a stud, it was loose at this point where I could pry it forward enough to wedge the 1/2 inch extention between the bracket and
      the left valve cover..let me know if this was helpful..

    Hello, Yardie.
    Thanks for the video. I really like the audio narration quality.
    How did you diagnose the leak? Was the coolant dripping from outside the manifold? How do you diagnose an internal leak (manifold gasket only or bad head gasket), and if a head gasket is bad, how do you find out which bank (driver side or passenger side) ?
    Thanks again for a nice video!

    • @thediyyardie7192
      @thediyyardie7192  Год назад +2

      Hey liuj88, much thanks for the compliments on the video, I appreciate it, but as for locating that leak, it took a little while, I had to search really hard, the corner where the leaking was coming from was under the a/c compressor and ran down behind power steering pump then on the ground, took some patience, especially because it wasn't a big leak, and would take weeks before more coolant was needed to be added..

    • @thediyyardie7192
      @thediyyardie7192  Год назад +1

      As for an internal leak, it all depends on where the leak is located, it could leak into the exhaust system, if its a heavy leak it could cause like a cloudy white smoke from the exhaust pipe, and a possible misfire on that cylinder/cylinders. you can hold the top radiator hose with the engine cold and have someone start the car, if the hose starts to get hard soon after the engine is started as if air is being pumped into it, its most likely a cracked cylinder head or blown gasket, it could also leak into the oil, if that's the case the oil will start or become a muddy color and oil level will be much higher than it is supposed to be.. let me know if that info helps any, and also what symptoms your car is showing..

      Thank you for the info!
      I had both of my head gaskets replaced maybe 10 years ago only because my mechanic said to do it after I kept losing coolant. I didn't know to ask how he diagnosed it. It probably makes sense to replace the head gaskets on both banks even if only one is blown, I don't know. I would guess that if cost or time is an issue, it will be important to find out exactly which head gasket blew and replace only that.
      Then, about 2 years ago I had a terrible vacuum leak that I diagnosed myself to be the lower manifold gasket (I don't know if it's because the manifold was installed poorly during the head gasket job or if it was just wear and tear).
      I'm losing coolant now, but very slowly. I need to add maybe a half a quart every month, and I don't see any leak or see steam on the exhaust. But I'm preparing for symptoms to get worse and trying to anticipate what needs to be done. I'll likely need to do the repairs myself. I've gone through more than 10 shops since the head gasket job and none of them were honest. Being an amateur, I want to do only what is necessary so I'm curious about how to find the exact source of the leak.
      Sorry for the long post. Thanks again!

    • @thediyyardie7192
      @thediyyardie7192  Год назад +1

      @@liuj88 this truck had a slow leak also at first, even after it started leaking out faster it still was hard to find because of the spot being hidden, if its the intake gasket, the leak would most likely be to the top front left or right corner of the intake manifold, the coolant travels trough the intake from one cylinder head to the other at the front of the manifold, that is why it usually leaks in those areas. let the car run for 1/2 hour to 45 mins, hold the idle at about 1500 rpm, after doing that, carefully check over the areas I mentioned, you have to look keenly, this one was up under the a/c compressor, it was difficult to see..

Thinking about replacing the intake gaskets before a big road trip just to be safe (as it's 25 years old at this point, I'm sure gaskets are going). Hey Jacques, that van actually belongs to a friend of mine, he purchased the gasket set at a local part supplier here in the area we live, it included a new packet of sealant, the replacement o rings for the fuel lines and the two lower intake gaskets, its called The Parts Authority, not sure if they're in your area, but you should be able to find that set at just about any parts supply store or online..
