    Best video I have watched regarding repairs on an astro/safari van. Thank you

    Was happy to see this detailed video, but after watching it I will continue to cross my fingers hoping this issue will never appear in my -98 AWD.

    Thanks for the video it helped a ton, i just did this to my 2002 astro and the process is basically the same except mine does not have a EGR valve in the intake, plastic gaskets failed at 151,000

    The alternator doesn't have to come out and the intake manifold can go out and in through the doghouse. It might be worth it for the extra room to maneuver though.

    I asked a trusted mechanic if he'd want to replace mine. He declined, saying that he's easing into semi-retirement and he doesn't want to do time-consuming repairs anymore. I guess I'll have to do the work myself. It's not outside my ability, but having just recently fixed a valvetrain problem in my Ford Econoline, I've about had my fill of van repairs for a little while...

    Nice concise video. Super useful thanks! Surprised you didn't remove the fan, it's definitely easier to remove alternator and other stuff with it out the way!

    Currently have my intake manifold out on my 2000 Astro. Nearly got the cylinder heads out too. I'm replacing all the gaskets to hopefully fix some white smoke 😅
    Update: Everything is back together but no change in exhaust smoke 😅
    Update 2: Doing the job again, this time taking more time to clean head gasket mating surfaces and just doing everything better the 2nd time. Got the heads back on, next is putting intake back in.

    I’m seriously wondering if this job would be easier dropping the whole subframe with engine and all.
    It would certainly be some work to drop it but once it’s dropped everything one would want to do on the engine would be so much easier.
    Hmmm?

    • @Semystic
      @Semystic 9 месяцев назад

      Definitely not. I've pulled my intake off twice in the last couple weeks. It's really not that bad. If you were doing the head gaskets like I am, then then it may be easier to just drop the whole engine 😂

  • @kikilizarraga7193

    Very helpful thank you ! Had a question what would you recommend if something happen but the van died on you and a lot of water got into the motor that made it turn off. Should we replace the motor and just service the engine?

    • @mgbgtguy
      @mgbgtguy  Год назад +1

      If that made the engine shut down, it may have hydro locked , if it did you could have bent rods or other terminal issues. If it wont turn over now then that is likely. When coolant gets in the crankcase it can ruin the bearings pretty quickly, so it depends on how long it was run with coolant in it. You can check the oil to see how full it is and drain it down to proper level, or change it then see if it turns over. or even start it to see if it is knocking before deciding if it’s worth trying to do the intake gasket.

      I buy in person, not online. I got the Felpro permadry gasket set, they are usually listed as the improved design in the store computers. I had to point it out while there to get the one I wanted ( I used to be behind the counter and know the system)

    Did the intake gasket fix the problem or did the oil-coolant intermix return, indicating bigger problems? Thanks!

    • @mgbgtguy
      @mgbgtguy  Год назад +2

      The intake gasket fixed that problem. Sometimes, though, after getting coolant in the oil, you can have a rod bearing start hammering not too long afterwards depending on how much coolant got any oil, and how long it was running like that.

    • @miab1762
      @miab1762 Год назад +1

      @@mgbgtguy thanks for the response! My Astro's oil was full of coolant after sitting during the winter. I think it was dripping into the crankcase as it sat. I noticed before I drove it, so I'm going to do the intake, change the oil a few times, and hope for the best. Thanks again 👍

    Can you put SU hs4 carbs on a hs2 manifold on a 1275 midget?

    • @mgbgtguy
      @mgbgtguy  Год назад

      No. Hs4 carbs have an offset, or angled bolt pattern, where hs 2 carbs are straight in line. Plus the bigger carbs would have a wider bolt spacing anyway.

      well im
      No mechanic at all, i watched your video, it took me a month working on it only weekends, i took it all apart & did it..then i drove it cross country for 2 weeks! Through crazy roads mountsins steep grades in sedona, Colorado, Pennsylvania etc.. around 8,000+ miles.. i needed a new thermostat, brake pads & 3 oil changes but it ran like a champ!! Zero leaks! Im replacing the ball joints, fuel filter & fuel pump, new cap seals & fluild on the diff, new plugs & wires too.. its gonna be a lil astro tank! Thanks!!
