‘80 MGB Wiring Harness Replacement & TR7 Engine Updates
Просмотров 621День назад
After the owner installed a new radio and USB port, this 1980 MGB decided to let the smoke out of its wiring harness. So we now have it in the shop to check out the condition of the dash harness to be sure there isn’t melted wiring there and to definitely replace the main harness. We’ll walk you through fishing out the old harness if you don’t want to just cut it and pull it out so you can hang...

The shop has been missing something for quite some time that would make a lot of projects go so much easier. We’ve done a fair amount of research over the past year or so and finally decided it was just time to take the plunge and we made a new purchase for the shop. Now we need to go on a road trip to northern Cincinnati to get it. But since we’re in Cincinnati, we HAD to make a stop to visit ...
1980 MGB LE Walk Around
Просмотров 71621 день назад
Today we’re taking a look at the 1980 MGB LE that came in the shop for some minor repairs that we covered in the last video. The owner has only averaged about 100 miles per year since buying it, so it is a surprisingly low mileage car. Just how low? Watch to find out! It drives like it just came off the showroom floor and though not quite perfect, presents very well too. So just how did a 44 ye...
Late MGB ignition issue / common mistake
Просмотров 818Месяц назад
Today we have a 1980 MGB LE in the shop with an ignition problem. Like many other cars we’ve had in the shop over the years, the problem is actually due previous work that’s been done to the car by a mechanic who wasn’t as savvy with British cars. An ignition “upgrade“ has to be done right using the correct coil, and wired correctly to work as intended. How do you know you’re buying the correct...

We’re at the Arthritis Foundation Car Show in Dublin, Ohio today. This is an all makes show that drew in over a thousand cars this year. But today we’re just giving you a look at the British Show Field, which was actually pretty sparse compared to previous years. Only a handful of MG’s and a better showing of Triumphs, but the Jags saved the day for us. It’s really a shame that we don’t see mor...

Non running MGTC EXU.. What was wrong with it?

The 1949 MGTC EXU that came into the shop after sitting 5yrs is now running. Years ago, the owner had started chasing down an electrical issue after it stalled while driving and wouldn’t start again. They did find a wire that looked melted and started to fix that, then moved on to lots of other testing that yielded no results. Due to his age, medical issues and difficulty twisting to get under ...
Gathering Of the Faithful-A walk around GOF, not just for T Series anymore

This week there were approximately 120 MG’s, many coming in from other States, out and about attending the GOF Central in Newark, OH. The “Gathering of the Faithful” was traditionally a T-Series and older event to celebrate the Pre-War cars, but in recent years, it has expanded to include all MG’s right up to the recently imported MGF’s. Jack up your MGB from the front properly and avoid damage
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.2 месяца назад
Yes you can damage your MGB jacking it up from the front….it happens more often than you might think! It only takes one slip of the jack to be needing a new radiator and/or damaging the front valance, but if you keep in mind how that can happen, and how to avoid it you can save your self $$ and the hassle of repairs.

From what i understand, one difference between brake clean and carb clean/starting fluid (among many other things) is that the latter two have oils/lubricants in them which, as you mentioned in the video, happen leave behind a residue. thus, i am of the opinion that for use as a starting fluid, brake clean should never be used, as it strips necessary engine oil from the cylinder walls, valve guides, etc without replacing it, which could cause premature wear. I’m no expert and i’m not sure how bad it really is to use brake clean as a starting fluid, and i, like everyone else, have used brake clean as starter fluid in a pinch, but i never would recommend it and avoid it at all costs. anyways good stuff as always, thank you for the informational and entertaining content you produce

Basically with solvents, the slower, they dry the more residue they’re gonna leave behind. That’s why my solvent tank leaves so much more residue than carburetor cleaner and brake cleaner leaves so much less. For the most part solvents are generally petroleum based. I don’t think starting an engine with brake cleaner is going to do any damage, now if you want to run it on brake cleaner for any length of time, that might be a different story

I had to look that one up. That’s newer than the ones I worked on (I was in ‘88-‘96) we had older designs. You know they all produce 3 phase, and ground + any one lug = single phase. Ground + all 3 lugs = 3 phase. I have never heard of 2 phase. 🤷‍♂️

    • @oxfletch
      @oxfletch 10 дней назад

@@mgbgtguy I just mean split phase (center tap transformer) 240 & 120 like for any US house. Two phases 180 degrees opposed. As I understand it, the older models you could wire as Wye / Zig-zag without any problem to get this, but this one you can't as they don't bring all the necessary wires out of the head / generator (some are connected internally). I guess I have to take the head unit off.

If you had to over-richen the carbs you might want to check for wear in the carb bodies where the butterfly shafts seat. That would make them run lean, especially at idle.

    • @mgbgtguy

I would suggest everyone who is , or has been, involved with MGBs has an opinion including me. I have owned 30 Brit cars since 1964 to include 7 MGs. I have owned: 1946 TC race car which I streeterized. 1950 MG TD which was also a race car prepped for Bonneville. My very first car was a 1953 MGTD MK II.. my favorite of the T series. First month production 1956 MGA which I bought when working for British Motors of Monterey, Calif. I promptly installed a 3 main B motor. Then a 1969 MGC GT also bought while there. Webasto sun roof and 4 speed automatic, Mineral Blue. Twelve years ago I bought and restored a completely rust free 1964 Iris Blue B. Fabulous car. Stupidly sold it. I replaced it with my current 1963 MGB. Looks good runs well but the Weber has to go. Garbage, and I am adamant about getting rid of them, they are a cheap (relatively) easy way out of not restoring and replacing the SU carbs, best carb ever built. . The down draft WEBER is NOT a dedicated unit for the B, it is universal and unfit as it comes. To properly fit one you need a sack of jets and a rolling dyno, and then you still have a carb tat has a 90 turn of the air fuel mixture. They are inefficient, prone to vapor lock and do not have the "punch" of proper SUs. Your mileage may vary. The latest down draft weber is made in Spain and worse than the Italian made units. Back to the LE MGB. I simple words An Abomination.. It fails on the following basic points. Substandard.... Design, Materials and Workmanship. There is no excuse for this car. Other manufacturers managed to comply with the US Federal regulations without looking hideous and still with some resemblance of former days and some power left. Attempts at upping the mid sixties HP to the former 95-98 are commendable but expensive and , as we see with the Weber, a waste of money and time. I agree with the Electronic ignition and the exhaust and so on but this is the classic "lipstick on a pig" Granted the car has very few miles but that does not preclude that the car itself is a deterrent to purchase given design, material and workmanship failure. There are plenty of pre 1974 1/2 chrome bumper cars out there. I would suggest that MGB ended life in June of 74. RIP. I can forgive the rubber bumpers on a BRG, Black or Red MGB.. (almost) It's the rest of the car that is the real problem. The LE designation means absolutely nothing. Stripes and wheels doesn't cut it. If someone wants to restore (bring the car back to original) that is folly. Throwing money trying to upgrade the car is expensive and time consuming ..and , as an example, replacing the vinyl seat covers with proper leather. a grand just to buy the covers not to include installation. There's more but I'm done and you are bored... What this car needs is a proper Christian Burial or back to a museum for gross auto mistakes next to the Gremlin and the Kaisers with the widow's peak windshield. Excellent video and my condolences to the next owner. RIP MGB.

my guess is that the coil was receiving current all night. maybe the ignition switch was on? anyway, your instincts are corrent, IMO. the coil's toast...but it's just a coil. about any old coil will work. and get a new plug wire to fit the coil, as the one on that coil was made for it and its design is over half a century old. modern coil wires look a bit different where it plugs into the coil, but the sparkplug end should be okay no matter what. and the reason the spark varied from weak to strong and back again was probably related to damage to the coil. then manifested itself with cycles of overheating and cooling. heat creates resistance in wires and would vary the amount of high voltage the coil can make. thus the strong, weak, strong spark cycles. the coil needs to make 20,000v or more to jump the sparkplug gap properly. and it must be constant. ...it wasn't. the pop or backfire through the carb was probably caused by unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust manifold and blowing back. when spark is inconsistent, unburnt fuel builds up and will ignite at unexpected times and in uncommon areas and seeks relief...it just blew back through the most convienent orifice.

I really don’t understand what you’re getting at in this post, there’s nothing wrong with the coil on the car. They just had a 12 V coil hooked to a 6 V wire. The result was it was getting too weak of a spark for proper ignition.

@@mgbgtguy sorry, wrong channel. ...avoiding youtube advertisments has recently complicated viewing and has forced me to have two different browsers open with a youtube tab open on each one. one for watching and another for commenting and "liking". sometimes i'll have a total of four channels open at once. ...got confused when commenting. haha. my mistake.

@@mgbgtguy yes, that's true, but i watch all youtube channels on my desktop with tripple 32" flat screens. so i'm afraid, unfortunately, that my error is not so easily excused. i wish it was... it just so happened that both channels (and all four open tabs) i was viewing were "car" channels and both involved fixing coil issues.

Great info. Why don't you like the Weber? A friend of mine told me that's the way to go. I have a 79 MGB with a ZS.

Because Weber carburetors are kits for people that can't wrap their head around tuning CV carbs. 90% of CV carb problems are ignition problems. Weber carb kits do not come optimally tuned for British engines and they get traded around a lot so you really don't get an optimally tuned carb.

The recommended jetting on the carb is the same whether you’re installing it on a 948 or an 1800 and everything in between, so the jetting doesn’t work very well on quite a few of those engines. With a little research, there are people out there that have sorted out jetting for specific cars that work better than the recommended one but if you try to do it yourself, it could take a while and you could spend a fair bit of time and money getting it right. The manifold that it sits on is not that great performance wise, so don’t ever think of this as a performance set up as some people want to sell them as. These are great for people who are used to working on Holley carburetors as they know how to work on them, and that’s why they are so popular (it is effectively a reproduction of an old holley as used on early 70s Fords from the factory) I will admit part of my dislike form is my lack of experience with them and my unwillingness to really dig in and learn them. SU’s look the part and work great so I stick with those anytime the Stromberg is removed, but the Stromberg can be made to work perfectly fine. It just won’t provide the power and the snappy acceleration.

@@mgbgtguy Thanks for the quality reply. My MGB runs like a top, starts the first try, nice throaty purr, so I'm happy with the ZS, I just keep hearing my friend's remark "Put a Weber on that and let that engine breathe." That being said, I'm tearing down a 1958 MGA roller that has twin SU's. My goal is to rebuild it for vintage racing and I was thinking of the Weber for that, but your points about the intake manifold and jets were noted. And lastly, I'm just down the road in Cincy "O-H...."

@@mgbgtguy That's why I call them Pinto carbs. Yes they can be made to work ok and they do have an accellerator pump and a power valve so they feel good to American car drivers. But as you point out, the manifolds are generic trash and the gas mileage shows it. They just don't belong on a British car. Might as well put a Thermoquad on a Jaguar six.
