You did a great job explaining about exhaust problems! Sent this to my Grandson who has zero knowledge of 4 cylinder exhaust systems and you nailed it for him. Thanks for the great video!
Great video and right to the point. My truck was recently diagnosed with a leaking exhaust manifold and I'm suspecting that it is the cause of some of the issues I've been having with it. Loss of power, stumbling, exhaust fumes getting into the cab, occasional burnt smell, ticking noise, and intermittently the front end will shutter on acceleration as well as sputtering while idling. I was suspecting that maybe the O2 sensor is being thrown off but there has never been any codes or stored codes.
I noticed a glimmer of humor in your eyes when you started talking about bolts breaking. This leads me to believe you have personally experienced this nightmare! :D
You nailed my problem my Man. My Jeep had all those problems . The screws on my manifold were all loose. All I did was tighten them. Fixed the problems. Thank you
God bless you bro. My 2012 Silverado 280k started getting sluggish and randomly would feel sluggish. It wouldn’t rev high and wouldn’t go fast until warmed up. I had 1 rear bolt missing in the exhaust and now I have the front one as well and it’s bad lol especially on cold start sluggish and loud tick. Warms up and it’s gone basically. Thanks boss you just confirmed it for me. Gonna take it to get the bolts removed and all replaced
I will say great explanation on this it's all the correct common symptoms and most think it's lifters when it's just a leak but people need to know that backpressure is never good. That is not a thing. Pressure back into your motor... especially a turbo is horrible for your engine. Cats are the most restricted part of the exhaust. I have a 16 silverado and it's all done up but I have headers and straight pipe with no cats to a flowmaster dump muffler and the truck has never had so much power. Airflow is good. The reason this will hurt power is the airflow is disrupted and cannot flow quickly as it should
Thank you. Hopefully, the tapping noise is from the exhaust manifold. It has tapping sound driving from a cold start. It continues (or at least noticeable) while driving between 20mph to 65mph. There is also that high pitch noise somewhere. The fuel pump seems to be (or hopefully) okay since I can hear it on startup or cranking to start the engine.
You're the man! Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us. Well said. Clear and to the point. Grateful for helpful people like you who make the world a better place.
I was thinking my 5.3 L was suffering of a oil elevator issue or rods but I noticed as soon the engine warms up! The tapping noise goes away! And I noticed some exhaust manifold bolts are broken. It will cost me $1000 dollars to fix the problem but is better than opening the engine.
Found your video very helpful and useful lots of good information thanks for sharing this I’m going through everything you said with my 86 Chevy thank you
Thank u for this ..i bought a chevy sonic with a bad gasket at the bottom is where the smoke was coming from before it disappears and it was also coming thru the vent also
Would an exhaust manifold gasket leak cause a p0420 code? I have a 2017 Transit Connect. Symptoms are, ticking noise at cold start up & seems to subside once engine is warm. Light sputter to hesitation when accelerating to maintain speed. Reduced fuel mileage also. Thanks for any input. Also seems to lack power at times. I can get up past 40 mph just fine which makes me believe the cat may still be good.
Great explanation and video, thank you..One thing i didnt hear you say is engine misfiring. Can exhaust leak cause misfiring with p0300 random multiple cylinder misfire? Thanks, if anybody can give me some advice i would highly appreciate it. Its a 2004 ford taurus if that helps any.
I have a 2015 Ford truck. Mechanic said that all the manifold bolts are rusted real bad and one of them is leaking. The sound of loud like a the fan turning the motor almost like if you're in your truck and hear lawn mower running outside the vehicle like lawn Care. Will this hurt the truck to be driven for like 2 weeks
Hi, nice video, i have a toyota celica 2001, i had to get a new cat fitted because it snapped at weld, it was premium 1, anyway once it got fitted the mechanic mentioned that they had to use a different gasket because the 1 that came with new exhaust didnt quite fit, so i got car back and was driving about 3 weeks to a month and it started to struggle on acceleration and i got check engine light, i checked the codes and its reading p0420 and p0303, im scratching my head because there hasn't been any problem with car until exhaust was changed, so i bought a new 02 sensor as it mentions bank1 in the code info, but now im reading it could be down to a exhaust leak, which makes me think, its because of that gasket they used or its not been fitted tight enough, i just wondered if this was a possibility, could this cause these both codes to come on, when it idles theres like a sputtering noise from exhaust at back, but unsure if thats just because it had been sitting for the the last week. Would really appreciate your insight, thanks.
What if your O2 sensor check engine light came on for a day and then went off…? Could I assume that it was something that just was passing through? I haven’t experienced any of those other symptoms you mentioned, so I am tempted to just wait it out and see.
I’m also having my engine coolant go down but no visible signs anywhere even during a compression test kit being used could this also be the cause? At start up I have the rattling/ticking noise for sure plus mild/heavy smoke coming out of the exhaust with e peculiar smell like it’s burning the coolant but I haven’t been able to verify this yet.
If you put an air hose in the tailpipe with a cap that's relatively air-tight, should it be able to hold some pressure if there are no leaks at all? Could this be a diagnostic method? Thanks.
I could see traces of oil at my engine wall passenger side, from the exhaust gasket area going to the cylinder head ..pls why is there oil lesking from there and also exhaust smokes blue snd i smell it in cabin, cabin gets hot, body of car sweats internally.like body of chassis.....sfter tsking off the seats, the trunk is hot ...could this be from exhaust leak from gasket.....02 error codes are being stored always, loss of oil...
Hi brotber , would an underboost p0299 error ? My car boosts fine when the engine is cold but once the engine gets warm i lose boost i also see some light smoke come out the bonnet when i stop at the lights sometime
Hi i have noise in my car that sounds like a exhaust leak while i'm driving or the car is in gear. When its in neutral its no sounds at all and it sounds normal again. Do you know what it could be?
Sounds like what I’m experiencing on my car. I hear squeaking/chirping only when I’m stepping on the gas pedal gently especially when I’m maintaining my speed. But when I put it in reverse or neutral, and I step on the gas pedal, there’s no noise.
@@Top5AutoRepairsmy 96 Ranger 3.0 is clicking fast and I reved up to 3k rpm for a little bit and the noise went away then came back then tried 2500 Rpms it stops and starts once I let off the gas what could my problem be? Thanks

I just finished rebuild my engine it's 2004 volvo.xc90 T6. cylinders numbers passenger side 1-2-3-4-5-6 , I started first time today and started but immediately there were misfire on 3-4-5 and exchuast smoke leak coming from manifold just behind 3-4-5 can someone tell the misfire is from the exhaust leak please before I go crazy stright to mental hospital 😢.
@Top5AutoRepairs the reason I asked that it's because I saw the same case in front of me in the past large exhaust leak + random misfire like mine and the guy fixed the leak then the misfire was gone immediately. However I will do compression test on 3-4-5 before I tighten the bolts and nuts where the exhaust leak is I don't want to waste time doing the exchuast leak fix and then it turns to be like you said that the head wasn't tourqe correctly . is this the correct path ? Oh I just loosing a bolt on the manifold by cylinder 3 and the misfire got worse .
Wow compression test done but nit makes sense it's shows 65 on all cylinder but I have the misfire only 3-4-5 🤦 why would the ECU choose to show the misfire only on those , I deleted the codes many times to see if it would change but everytime I start the car it would show the misfire there only .
Update : I had a tip from volvo specialist he told me to redo the timming again he said when all cylinder read low compression same equal number is an evidence of jumped belt or incorrect timming, I looked at the timming marks I see the exhaust mark is off by 1 tooth.
Will it cause a rough engine idle ? Also will cause to the engine to choke a bit when start up or while running. I have a leak and my rpm’s are jumpy at red lights.
Hi I'm not this mechanic but I can answer your question. If there is a leak upstream of the O2 sensor, the sensor may detect excess oxygen in the exhaust and tell the car's computer to compensate by adding more fuel to the mix, because normally this would be a "lean" condition (not enough fuel in the mix). This can cause a rough idle especially at low RPM or when initially accelerating. A lean condition is more dangerous for the engine than a rich condition so the compensation is intended to protect the engine even if it causes rough running.
When stepping on the gas pedal, and especially when I’m maintaining my speed, I hear a chirping/squeaking noise either in the dashboard or engine bay. But when I put it in neutral or reverse, and I step on the gas pedal in the same manner, there’s no noise. Any idea what this could be?
@@greendholia5206 the squeaking noise was from the worn engine (front and rear) and tranny mounts. The way I see it, in other cars, you’ll get vibrations all over the engine bay. But my car, for whatever reason, squeaked due to bad mounts. To be clear, I didn’t replace the serpentine belt nor tensioner… just the mounts
Is this common for a 2015 Nissan Sentra for a p0101? I already changed the air flow sensor 3 times. And I keep getting the same code. Please let me know
the heat shield on my exhaust manifold is cracked right where the bolt is, is this something I should be concerned about? It seems it just has a crack/hole on the shield, but the actual manifold looks intact

Can it cause backpressure in the radiator?
You can always do the old shop vac blowing up the tailpipe trick with a soapy water spray bottle

yeah
When pressing the accelerator, there’s a loud rattling noise, what can that be?
