Bad Exhaust Manifold or Gasket Leaks (Know the Symptoms before Replacement)

  • How do you know the exhaust manifold or gasket should be replaced? First common problem is leak. When you hear a ticking, clicking, tapping or puffing noise that means there is an exhaust leak.
    Usually this is due to worn gasket or a crack on the exhaust manifold. Another common issue is exhaust smoke and fumes. This is normally caused by broken stud, bolt or cracks. Rust is the more common issue contributing to manifold failure

    Great video and right to the point. My truck was recently diagnosed with a leaking exhaust manifold and I'm suspecting that it is the cause of some of the issues I've been having with it. Loss of power, stumbling, exhaust fumes getting into the cab, occasional burnt smell, ticking noise, and intermittently the front end will shutter on acceleration as well as sputtering while idling. I was suspecting that maybe the O2 sensor is being thrown off but there has never been any codes or stored codes.

    Thank you. Hopefully, the tapping noise is from the exhaust manifold. It has tapping sound driving from a cold start. It continues (or at least noticeable) while driving between 20mph to 65mph. There is also that high pitch noise somewhere. The fuel pump seems to be (or hopefully) okay since I can hear it on startup or cranking to start the engine.

    I will say great explanation on this it's all the correct common symptoms and most think it's lifters when it's just a leak but people need to know that backpressure is never good. That is not a thing. Pressure back into your motor... especially a turbo is horrible for your engine. Cats are the most restricted part of the exhaust. I have a 16 silverado and it's all done up but I have headers and straight pipe with no cats to a flowmaster dump muffler and the truck has never had so much power. Airflow is good. The reason this will hurt power is the airflow is disrupted and cannot flow quickly as it should

    I was thinking my 5.3 L was suffering of a oil elevator issue or rods but I noticed as soon the engine warms up! The tapping noise goes away! And I noticed some exhaust manifold bolts are broken. It will cost me $1000 dollars to fix the problem but is better than opening the engine.

    Hi, nice video, i have a toyota celica 2001, i had to get a new cat fitted because it snapped at weld, it was premium 1, anyway once it got fitted the mechanic mentioned that they had to use a different gasket because the 1 that came with new exhaust didnt quite fit, so i got car back and was driving about 3 weeks to a month and it started to struggle on acceleration and i got check engine light, i checked the codes and its reading p0420 and p0303, im scratching my head because there hasn't been any problem with car until exhaust was changed, so i bought a new 02 sensor as it mentions bank1 in the code info, but now im reading it could be down to a exhaust leak, which makes me think, its because of that gasket they used or its not been fitted tight enough, i just wondered if this was a possibility, could this cause these both codes to come on, when it idles theres like a sputtering noise from exhaust at back, but unsure if thats just because it had been sitting for the the last week. Would really appreciate your insight, thanks.

    Would an exhaust manifold gasket leak cause a p0420 code? I have a 2017 Transit Connect. Symptoms are, ticking noise at cold start up & seems to subside once engine is warm. Light sputter to hesitation when accelerating to maintain speed. Reduced fuel mileage also. Thanks for any input. Also seems to lack power at times. I can get up past 40 mph just fine which makes me believe the cat may still be good.

    I’m also having my engine coolant go down but no visible signs anywhere even during a compression test kit being used could this also be the cause? At start up I have the rattling/ticking noise for sure plus mild/heavy smoke coming out of the exhaust with e peculiar smell like it’s burning the coolant but I haven’t been able to verify this yet.

    Will it cause a rough engine idle ? Also will cause to the engine to choke a bit when start up or while running. I have a leak and my rpm’s are jumpy at red lights.

    • @slyhatjones
      @slyhatjones Год назад

      Hi I'm not this mechanic but I can answer your question. If there is a leak upstream of the O2 sensor, the sensor may detect excess oxygen in the exhaust and tell the car's computer to compensate by adding more fuel to the mix, because normally this would be a "lean" condition (not enough fuel in the mix). This can cause a rough idle especially at low RPM or when initially accelerating. A lean condition is more dangerous for the engine than a rich condition so the compensation is intended to protect the engine even if it causes rough running.
