62 years old !!!!! What you sound like a young man to me but it’s great to see people age so well, gives me hope that I will be turning wrenches when I’m 62.
Many thanks for uploading this video. About to take on the exact same task on my 06 4.8 your presentation is more than I could have asked for and I found your video very informative. I thank you once again!
Awesome walkthrough! I really needed it. I picked up a 05 Z71 Suburban 5.3 with 217k miles and I have an oil leak. I believed it was the oil pan gasket. After replacement, I still have a minor oil leak. Now I have a list of parts to get the job done. There is nothing worse than doing a job and missing something small needed to do the job correctly. Thank you!
I have done a few of these to replace the knock sensors. To make the cleaning job easier, I first use a shop vac, scraper, and wire brush to first remove the dirt. If you remove the dirt first, the oil comes off real easy with brake cleaner. If you hit the dirt with brake cleaner first, it makes the dirt into a muddy slurry and it takes so much longer.
Of course i come across this video AFTER i had my intake manifold off to replace my cam position sensor, oil pressure switch and knock sensors all in the same search for that elusive oil leak from the back of the engine. Replaced everything you spoke of except the valley pan gasket amd still have my leak. Time to do it again.
damn I need to do this job on my tahoe in the spring. Guess I need to compile a list of gaskets and new parts. Looks like replacing everything all at once is the best move. Thanks for the video!
I noticed I was burning some extra oil on my 04 Sierra w the 5.3 and that it had a lot of buildup around the valve covers and under the intake plenum. After seeing where yours is dirty I think my valley pan gaskets shot too, this vid will definitely come in handy, thanks!
That's very encouraging! The way you describe yourself, you and I are about the same physically and agewise. You're a little younger. So I ought to be able to do this job. I only wish I was at home with my garage, instead of 1150 miles away in an apartment. It's a lot easier when you can just stop and clean up and go to bed and then resume in the morning. Here, you can't leave parts and tools lying around, or they'll walk off. Heck, the whole truck almost walked off one night. I wish it had! If I'd known I was going to have so much trouble with this truck, I would left it unlocked with the door open and the key in the ignition. A thief deserves such problems, but not me!
Man my 2000 silverado with 215,000 miles looked exactly like yours with rodent feces and gulf coast sand included. I cleaned mine just as you described with a toothbrush , B12, and paper napkins and some mystery oil when the fumes got too heavy all the while trying to keep debris out of the intake ports. I thought I had a rear main seal leak but now that I look further there seems to be oil on the back of the transmission.
I'm struggling with the same problem but I'm losing a quart of oil every 2 days. My vehicle is almost identical 2005 Tahoe. Thank you for the tips on the Xtra gaskets needed for the valley pan . God bless. Great job on the video,,, again! Lol
On a vehicle that old, it makes sense to replace parts that take a lot of work to get at if you have it apart anyway. That is how I usually do things if I'm doing a big project, whether it's a car or some other project.
Great video! I'm not taking anything away from that! I just wish it was a little bit more detailed in the teardown process. Not complaining much, I still learned a lot. Thank you very much. Much respect.
No problem, I'm just a shade tree mechanic trying to put some information out there. Many times I'd get started doing stuff that would have been good to film and have it finished before I'd even think to turn on the camera. If I decide to do any more videos, I will try and be a little more thoughtful about what others may be interested it. Thanks for the suggestion.
Good job cleaning. I'm chasing leak in the rear of my 2002 4.8. Just got the tranny out. I'm going after: rear seal plate, valley, sending unit, & knock sensors. Already had replaced valve covers.
Haven't checked in here for quite a while. I no longer own this old truck, my middle son is now the owner and it's still going strong the last time I checked. Made it all the way to Utah from California, then back and forth from Utah to California and then from Utah to Missouri. It's still a beater, but does what he needs it to do.
Just completed, I had 4 ports that were leaking. Replaced valley pan gasket, knock sensors, cam sensor, valve cover gaskets, steam vent gaskets and intake gaskets. truck runs like it was brand new, Next im going to install a oil catch can. could not believe how much oil gets returned to be reburned from the PCV valve, soot everywhere.
Question when you removed the valley cover and you said the coolent bypass pipes did they leak when you disconnect them???? Will I need to add more coolant? I'm replacing the oil pressure sensor, camshaft position sensor, knock sensors and wire harness, Valley pan gasket. And valve cover gaskets. I already did the intake manifold gasket last year. I would love to get everything cleaned up.
Thank you for making this video. Excellent job! Did you use a over the motor raised platform creeper to do it? Your back must have been killing you otherwise. Is it your daily driver?
Nah, I wish I had one of those, I just did it the old fashioned way. Luckily I have long arms and occasionally I would stand on a box I have to help reach back further. And yes, my back took a beating, part of the reason why it took me a while to finish the job.
Awesome job. I just bought a 2001 Silverado 4.8L and I've got lean codes. Pretty sure it's the intake manifold gaskets. I'm going to replace knock sensors while I'm in there. What else do you recommend I replace while down there?
Recently had my valley cover gasket replaced but they used the old coolant bypass lines. Worst of all they didnt put the metal spacers/gaskets back. Im pretty sure one of the ports is leaking significantly now. Could that be a possible problem for electrical issues at the back of the block? Considering thats where the engine ground is?
Great Video, Mine is 2004 5.3 Aval and so far I don't see any issues with oil or Dexcool. How many hours it took you to complete the task. Again good show.
Sorry for the late reply. I honestly don't remember how long, it was a while ago. If I had to guess, I'd say since I took my time and did a lot of cleaning, it was probably a good 15 to 20 hours.
Just a lot of scrubbing and using several different chemicals to help. I think I mentioned what I used in the video, but I haven't watched it in a while.
Berrymans b12 and LA Awesome cleaner from the dollar store along with a toothbrush. Put old socks or rags into each intake port to keep sand and grit out of the motor. I spent way more time cleaning the heads and valley and intake than actually doing the knock sensors.
Yes and no. Apparently I had more than one leak. Doing this job fixed the issue I had with one of them, but I discovered that I had a leak oil pan gasket also, so I did that job not long after finishing this one. Now I just get an occasional drip, not sure where it's coming from though.
I'm guessing you mean caked with dirt? Oil leaking from somewhere, maybe cover gaskets and then dirt and dust sticking to it would be my guess. Valve cover gaskets are an easy job if you're doing the rest of what I did in this video.
Sorry, I don't check in here much. To answer your question, I hunted down one other leak on my oil pan and replaced the gasket. Even with that, it still had a small leak coming from somewhere. Never ran it down though, it wasn't that bad, and I ended up giving the truck to one of my sons, he needed a vehicle and I had too many. He's still using it as his daily driver.
@@agvideo9504 I found my leak after searching everywhere end up being the cylinder deactivation solenoid its right under the the throttle bottle intake manifold..the bolts ended up bring loose ..fixed the problem no more leaks
If you're doing this to your truck I would recommend you taking your own advice. Unfortunately, I no longer have this vehicle. It was just a beater, not a show piece. I was more interested in it being functional and repaired than being pretty.
Wish I could help more with your questions. About a year after doing the repairs, I had no leaks. Then I gave the truck to one of my sons. He still has it, but hasn't mentioned any leaks, so maybe it's still good. Regarding the gaskets, I'll see if I have any records on them, but I just moved and are most likely gone. If I find them I'll reply here when I do.
Surprisingly just a bit better than it was before. Most of the leaks were fixed though. I still had a very small leak that I suspect was coming from the crank position sensor. I didn't mess with it though. I gave the truck to my son not too long after finishing this job.
Maybe u get this and hopefully can respond those intake gaskets do they work i ordered some and I was thinking that the steal shouldn't go between the heads and intake but how's it going 5 yrs later
Don't own it any longer. Gave it to my son several years ago. Was running well when I gave it to him and he hasn't said anything about leaks or it running poorly.
Great how-to.. thank you for the effort of making your video. You need to try CBD oils for your arthritis topically and internally it helps my arthritis. Another good oil my sister-in-law introduced me to is Copaiba.. keep up the good work sir
I've read about CBD oil, just haven't had the funds to buy any. Thanks for the tip. Update about the CBD oil. I tried some finally, did absolutely nothing for me, other than set off a bad case of hives. I know that some people swear by that stuff, but it no worky for me.
62 years old !!!!! What you sound like a young man to me but it’s great to see people age so well, gives me hope that I will be turning wrenches when I’m 62.
I felt older than 62, but I'm cheap and didn't want to pay someone to do something I knew I could do myself.
I give you five star. For what great job you did. Especially for this edge. We love you for you're honesty and great work we love people like you
Thank you very much for the time and effort it took to produce this. It was very helpful.

Thankyou...this helped me out on mine perfectly

Yea and you have to replace the head bolts
How did you get everything so clean with the ports still open? brake cleaner okay to get in those ports?
I used mostly Chemtool B-12, but also some Sea Foam.
REDUCED ENGINE POWER. Suburban 2003 Tokyo
