Thanks Rob...I looked at the knock sensors and they were dry and clean but the wiring in the harness was dry. so i lubed the wires up overnight before i took the caps off . so you might want to get a wiring harness as well
One thing to do (a little late now) is those 2 rubber plugs in the intake valley cover both the knock sensors, water gets in there and messes up the connectors and eventually you'll get knock sensor codes. Before re-assembly I like to clean those off and run a nice bead of rtv around the boots to further water proof them. I have to do mine here soon, 2002 Tahoe with 5.3. Just a heads up for next time. Thanks nikogto...I did look at them just my cam messed up on recording. The wiring harness was dry so i oiled the wires up before i pulled the boots off. The knock sensor were dry as a bone and looked new so i went with the old saying if it aint broke dont fix it...yea if you replace the knock sensors just buy a new harness as well. but without filming it I could pull that intake in 20 minutes so not that big of a deal Thanks for watching nik
Rickafix your video has inspired me to do more repairs due to the fact your instructions were fantastic! My knock sensor areas was full of water and bank 1 was completely rusted. I have completed the repairs and No check engine light! Thanks and keep the repair video coming.

Very nice job Rick and you sure do take that extra time to make sure everything is clean. One thing I found out over the years is that plenums made of plastic will do a lot of expanding and contracting. And of course, that will have a tendency for the bolts to loosen over time. As you know these bolts with a torque as little as 89 inch-lbs will gradually loosen and then comes oil and vacuum leaks. I always put a little blue thread locker on the bolts which seems to keep them in place. Once again Rick, nice work!

I came up to Utah from AZ in my 95 Yukon a week ago and today...I have that squeaking sound too. My son in law is an air force jet mechanic but he's on a TDY for two weeks. I am afraid to take the truck to a shop and be ripped off so I think it's going to sit until he comes back. This video will be helpful to him. I'm original owner with 150,000 miles on the 5.3 engine. Very good video my 2000 Sierra is throwing bank 1/2 code and random misfire I've done everything and last thing I can think of was vacuum leak at the intake gasket defiantly helped me through the job.
Now that was a first class job. It doesn't get any better than that. There are lots of veterans on the tube that could learn how to do that job such a precise and clean manner. I can only imagine the good work you do as a general contractor. Well done Rick !!

Great job on the video and thanks for sharing it! After watching it I replaced the gaskets on my 02 sierra 5.3L. My truck has been running rough in the cold weather, before it really gets warmed up under the hood, coupled with random P0171, P0174, and P0300 codes. After a few other new parts and diagnosis, and lots and lots of research, i figured it was time to do the IM gaskets. Great idea with the fuel hose to keep the bolts out of the way. I watched one other video and they were just hanging there on the way in and way out and made it look like a huge PITA. Just before i grabbed some old fuel line i realized there is a rubber bushing (grey color) on the bolts and I slid it down the bolt shaft to the bottom and that kept the bolts up out of the way just as well. Thought i would mention it to save the time of cutting up fuel line for somebody else perhaps. Anyway I hope this fixes my issue and thanks again!
I watched your video and decided to change my intake gaskets on my 2001 GMC sierra with 5.3 engine. Mine has 290K miles and this made a big difference. The old gaskets were not sealing at all. Watching your video helped allot. Thanks and keep em coming.
So how did you prevent all the crap from the intake ports getting into the cylinder? I'm in exactly this spot and not sure what to do. Even with the valves closed all the sludge gets on them and I can't reach that far down.
This is such a great, helpful video...I must ask, what are the symptoms that led to this? Burning oil, smoking, smell? etc. My Tahoe is an 04, with 165K miles. Doing fine but expect this will eventually be a repair I'll have to do.
Would recommend testing the torque on the bolts to the intake to make sure they're not just loose. I just went ahead and took apart the intake due to high mileage and and oil leak. Loose bolts though.... Could be the cause , gaskets look pretty darn good. Gonna clean and put the felpro on anyways and go from there. Hopefully this is the fix
Hey Rick I have a 2000 Chevy tahoe 4.8.. I had problems during start up,it would stutter or sound like it's ganna die on me during start up so I replace the intake gasket and it help a little but I would still get low idle during start up. once it warms up its fine
Looks like a good job HOWEVER you should have put a beed of silicone in all the gap areas in valley , 4 each locations should have silicone gasket glue.
I just ordered the gasket kit for my 07 Sierra 1500 , reason being is I want to clean the intake valves off best I can and obviously soak the manifold in a mild degreaser. I have 135k miles on my engine and I’m curious if you think cleaning that gunk carbon off will improve the performance? I know you can use fuel injection cleaner but I really want to get in there and see how clean it is for myself. I just payed off my truck and plan on keeping it for a long time and want to give it a little maintenance to make her run a little better. Thanks for your videos they are fun to watch. Bobby
You might want to put the fuel pump relay on the dash next time just so it's starring you in the face. Also turn ignition several times before cranking and then checking fuel rails for possible leaks, better safe then sorry. Great video!
When you can do the work yourself, it makes great financial sense to ride an old horse until it dies. I'm not sure that applies for hybrids or european cars where parts are very high priced. But for common vehicles like this one, it's a great idea. Did you compare manifold vacuum before and after?
I did take a reading about a month ago and i believe it was 11.0 but today at idle it was 9.75 and sometimes jumped to 10. The scanmaster says the max is 10.4. but wow does it run nice. hesitation or misfire gone and i probably drove 50 miles today. thanks spelunkerd
I'm about to do this to my 2011 Tahoe do you think it will clear my rough idle? Im not throwing any codes, and already changed exhaust manifold gaskets and new sparkplugs and wires. If this doesn't work, my next step might be fuel filter, then coilpacks.
Your light was good on video, with clear explanations. Thank you for doing that. I liked the rubber hose over the bolt trick. I have a 2012 Avalanche 5.3 v8 with a very slight intermittent rough idle that seems to disappear once it's well warmed up. Since it's intermittent, i don't think I'll be in for what you had to do. I would may try changing plugs out first. We have almost the same engine...any ideas as to what I should check into?

Take a look at this throttle body cleaning video on mine it sure helps to make sure everything is clean including the idle position sensor.. the throttle position sensor is just a lever doesn't really need to be cleaned but you can take it off anyways since you are in there, clean the maf sensor, new air filter or better yet buy a K&N filter they are great...plugs and new wires always helps...make sure the plugs are gapped correctly just because they say they are gap right they never are, then lol see if you have any leaks take some brake cleaner and spray around the hoses to see if the idle changes to find a leak ok thats enough to last you the weekend lol...Good Luck ruclips.net/video/2a77eCwb5Zo/видео.html

Thanks Keith...That manifold is pretty strong I would guess it is just the gasket...if you are removing the manifold I would take off the throttle body and clean that as well..cut pieces of rubber fuel line and put them under the bolts it is night and day removing and installing the manifold..when the manifold is off look behind it at the oil sending unit and see if it is leaking if it is would be a easy time to replace it...here is my vid on cleaning the throttle body ruclips.net/video/2a77eCwb5Zo/видео.html

I know this comment was eight years ago, but if you're still wrenching, LA's Totally Awesome Cleaner from the dollar store is better than anything from the parts store. It literally eats the carbon away without having to scrub at all. Made the piston heads on a 352k mile Suburban Z71 4x4 5.3 look brand new 😍

If you really do have black smoke, it means you’re burning too much fuel. Clogged air intake or filter, and sometimes it’s the fuel injectors. If it’s actually blue, you have a totally different problem…. A much more expensive problem.
Rick thank you for the helpful video, I really appreciate it. I'm wondering by replacing the intake manifold gaskets, the issue I'm having with vibrating fuel lines would stop. I recently installed a new fuel pump, fuel pressure reg, fuel filter, fuel pressure reg hose and fuel rails (all GM parts except fuel filter). After installing them I started to hear a vibration or buzzing noise coming from the fuel rails to all the way down to fuel tank. I hooked up a fuel pressure tool to test the fuel pressure and needle cannot stay solid. It bounces between 57-61 PSI +/-. I'm out of ideas to resolve this issue. I replaced the fuel pressure reg and fuel pump twice thinking they were defective but I'm confident now those weren’t the issue. Any ideas or suggestions from you or anyone else I would appreciate it. Thank you.
Try taking the vacuum hose off of the fuel pressure regulator while its running and making the vibration/buzzing noise. I had a vibration/buzzing noise from the fuel rails all the way back to the fuel tank after changing out my fuel pressure regulator. As soon as I pulled the vacuum line of the fuel pressure regulator the vibration/buzzing noise went away instantly. You have to be careful when installing a fuel pressure regulator to not smash the little filter in there.

snapped the first bolt on the AMI with torque of 35lbs.... was using an snapon torque wrench, ive used it on multiple projects... something told me 44lbs was a lot for this light bolts... specially that had to reuse them... so... is the 44 and 89lbs of torque accurate? because it snapped at 35... :( i tied the rest by hand to the sense... and will have to drive it like that for a week till iget $$ to buy new bolts and the get the day of...
Intake Manifold Bolts (First Pass in Sequence) 44 lb in Intake Manifold Bolts (Final Pass in Sequence) 89 lb in maybe the torque wrench was bad...that is why I paid alittle extra and got the computer digital read torque...i was always messing it up on the manual one...sorry about that

I looked it up on Chevy forums and they were apparently intended to keep water out of the valley and away from the knock sensors, but they dont do that very well. They recommend building a RTV dam around the knock sensors and leaving the foam out. And thanks for the sub, btw. I sub'd back.
I got fel pro gaskets and I got the passenger side to flush. The driver side on the 5 and 7 is still showing about an inch of the blue on the gasket. Any ideas to help me to seat it better or to resolve the issue
I have a 2001 chevy tahoe 5.3. the check engine light is on. the codes are P0300, P0171, P0174. the mechanic said I have a vacuum leak in the intake manifold gasket. he will charge me $400 to change it. I think I can do it my self but im not sure if that is really the problem. do you think it could be? when I start the tahoe in the morning it is rough and idles high and sometimes turns off. Thats the only problem I know of. thanks for your time.
+victor lopez I think you need to change the gaskets regardless if that the problem and very easy to do those 5.3 last forever if you maintain them and a new gasket is one of the steps...then look at the throttle body cleaning video video of mine do that as well then I would clean the fuel injectors you can watch my video of that as well lol all the materials to do these 3 jobs is like 100 plus dollars.. i have 230k on my tahoe now and i just drove from chicago to florida then I am off to scottsdale..I like to do preventive maintenance it always makes my trucks last forever let me know if you need any help thanks victor

I replaced my intake manifold gaskets on my 2000 Chevy Silverado. After I put everything back together my service engine light came on and started to blink. It was running rough even when on idle. What could it be?
After it was put back together it didn't want to start then realized that you forgot to put back in the fuel pump relay. Just wondering why it was taken off in the first place. Thanks.

2001 5.3 Silverado 104K miles. I have gotten the dreaded P0300 code twice now in the last month while at 75+mph. No noticeable loss of power or hesitation while moving. I can however notice the engine misfire at idle even though idle doesn't change (550rpm). I have replaced fuel pump (bad sending unit), fuel filter, plugs and wires. All factory AC Delco factory replacement parts. I also tried sea foam. No luck. Thoughts/recommendations?

i have a 04 gmc sierra that is leaking coolant is not from any of the hoses, water pump or thermostat i been looking around online and came across this can coolant leak out of the intake manifold? any ideas where can a leakage occur tia.
Yeah i said that to but when I took it apart the knock sensors were clean no rust and the seals were fine...just the wiring was a bit brittle...maybe next time i pop the manifold off I'll do it lol thanks ubber
@@Ace-44 I didn’t have any issues when i replaced my gaskets and cleaned everything up. As a matter fact once done, and everything put back together my Tahoe started right up.

Mark Villegas depends greatly on skill level and if u have the right tools. Id say 3hrs at most and that if alot goes wrong and alot of trips to the store

Dumb question did u notice any power gain or torque due to the gasket leaking ? I’m doing my gasket replacement just curious

Take a look at this throttle body cleaning video on mine it sure helps to make sure everything is clean including the idle position sensor.. the throttle position sensor is just a lever doesn't really need to be cleaned but you can take it off anyways since you are in there, clean the maf sensor, new air filter or better yet buy a K&N filter they are great...plugs and new wires always helps...make sure the plugs are gapped correctly just because they say they are gap right they never are, then lol see if you have any leaks take some brake cleaner and spray around the hoses to see if the idle changes to find a leak ok thats enough to last you the weekend lol...Good Luck ruclips.net/video/2a77eCwb5Zo/видео.html

Thanks Keith...That manifold is pretty strong I would guess it is just the gasket...if you are removing the manifold I would take off the throttle body and clean that as well..cut pieces of rubber fuel line and put them under the bolts it is night and day removing and installing the manifold..when the manifold is off look behind it at the oil sending unit and see if it is leaking if it is would be a easy time to replace it...here is my vid on cleaning the throttle body ruclips.net/video/2a77eCwb5Zo/видео.html

Wanted to ask though what you thought the tube that was under your intake but on top of your knock sensors was? I can't seem to figure it out and have a cleaning obsession like you and would like to remove it without worry. Also do you have any suggestions on what to use to clean gunk around the headers? I know this comment was eight years ago, but if you're still wrenching, LA's Totally Awesome Cleaner from the dollar store is better than anything from the parts store. It literally eats the carbon away without having to scrub at all. Made the piston heads on a 352k mile Suburban Z71 4x4 5.3 look brand new 😍
So much better than a Chiltons repair manual.

Do a compression test
If you really do have black smoke, it means you’re burning too much fuel. Clogged air intake or filter, and sometimes it’s the fuel injectors. If it’s actually blue, you have a totally different problem…. A much more expensive problem.

Rick thank you for the helpful video, I really appreciate it. I'm wondering by replacing the intake manifold gaskets, the issue I'm having with vibrating fuel lines would stop. I recently installed a new fuel pump, fuel pressure reg, fuel filter, fuel pressure reg hose and fuel rails (all GM parts except fuel filter). After installing them I started to hear a vibration or buzzing noise coming from the fuel rails to all the way down to fuel tank. I hooked up a fuel pressure tool to test the fuel pressure and needle cannot stay solid. It bounces between 57-61 PSI +/-. I'm out of ideas to resolve this issue. I replaced the fuel pressure reg and fuel pump twice thinking they were defective but I'm confident now those weren’t the issue.
Any ideas or suggestions from you or anyone else I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Try taking the vacuum hose off of the fuel pressure regulator while its running and making the vibration/buzzing noise. I had a vibration/buzzing noise from the fuel rails all the way back to the fuel tank after changing out my fuel pressure regulator. As soon as I pulled the vacuum line of the fuel pressure regulator the vibration/buzzing noise went away instantly. You have to be careful when installing a fuel pressure regulator to not smash the little filter in there.

snapped the first bolt on the AMI with torque of 35lbs.... was using an snapon torque wrench, ive used it on multiple projects...
something told me 44lbs was a lot for this light bolts... specially that had to reuse them...
so... is the 44 and 89lbs of torque accurate? because it snapped at 35... :(
i tied the rest by hand to the sense... and will have to drive it like that for a week till iget $$ to buy new bolts and the get the day of...

I looked it up on Chevy forums and they were apparently intended to keep water out of the valley and away from the knock sensors, but they dont do that very well. They recommend building a RTV dam around the knock sensors and leaving the foam out. And thanks for the sub, btw. I sub'd back.
no problem...I took my knock sensor rubber caps off and they were dry so the foam seemed to worked for me

I got fel pro gaskets and I got the passenger side to flush. The driver side on the 5 and 7 is still showing about an inch of the blue on the gasket. Any ideas to help me to seat it better or to resolve the issue

I have a 2001 chevy tahoe 5.3. the check engine light is on. the codes are P0300, P0171, P0174. the mechanic said I have a vacuum leak in the intake manifold gasket. he will charge me $400 to change it. I think I can do it my self but im not sure if that is really the problem. do you think it could be? when I start the tahoe in the morning it is rough and idles high and sometimes turns off. Thats the only problem I know of. thanks for your time.
+victor lopez I think you need to change the gaskets regardless if that the problem and very easy to do those 5.3 last forever if you maintain them and a new gasket is one of the steps...then look at the throttle body cleaning video video of mine do that as well then I would clean the fuel injectors you can watch my video of that as well lol all the materials to do these 3 jobs is like 100 plus dollars.. i have 230k on my tahoe now and i just drove from chicago to florida then I am off to scottsdale..I like to do preventive maintenance it always makes my trucks last forever let me know if you need any help thanks victor

After it was put back together it didn't want to start then realized that you forgot to put back in the fuel pump relay. Just wondering why it was taken off in the first place.

when you remove the pressure in the fuel lines you remove the relay then crank it up a few time and that release the pressure.

2001 5.3 Silverado 104K miles. I have gotten the dreaded P0300 code twice now in the last month while at 75+mph. No noticeable loss of power or hesitation while moving. I can however notice the engine misfire at idle even though idle doesn't change (550rpm). I have replaced fuel pump (bad sending unit), fuel filter, plugs and wires. All factory AC Delco factory replacement parts. I also tried sea foam. No luck. Thoughts/recommendations?
Cylinders 1,5,6,8 are misfiring according to my scan using the Torque Pro app for android

i have a 04 gmc sierra that is leaking coolant is not from any of the hoses, water pump or thermostat i been looking around online and came across this can coolant leak out of the intake manifold? any ideas where can a leakage occur tia.
where on the payment is the leak dripping
if there is no outside leak then your head gaskets are bad..get that radiator test kit for bad head gaskets

Yeah i said that to but when I took it apart the knock sensors were clean no rust and the seals were fine...just the wiring was a bit brittle...maybe next time i pop the manifold off I'll do it lol thanks ubber
