I just completed this job on my 1998 Silverado. I have very little mechanical experience and this job would have been way over my head if it wasn't for this video. I can't express how much I appreciate the detailed video, the fantastic camera angles, and thorough explanation of what was going on. There were a few small differences between my vehicle and the one in the video, but nothing significant. This video saved me quite a bit of money over taking it to a mechanic. I wish I could buy you guys a beer. Thank you so much for posting this.
I've viewed an extreme amount of RUclips videos And almost all of them are done by long winded, uninformed , wanna be comedians that take forever to get to the point. Your video was awesome. You set the bar very high. Great example. Thank you very, very much.
I'm not educated in auto repair so I did f#$^% up when i misunderstood inch pounds for foot pounds and snapped a bolt on my intake. I'll never do that again. But it did set me back about eight hours. I'm reinstalling everything this mourning. I'm sure it will start soon. Thanks to this video that you guys took the time to shoot and post. Thanks again.
I had to get the intake manifold gasket replaced on my 2002 bmw...that was 1600 at the dealership....now that I see the amount of work needed to do the same on a Chevy...I understand the pricing now. God bless the mechanics that keep us rolling! 💪🏿✌🏾👍🏾
I had the notorious intake coolant leak on my 5.7 1998 Silverado. It's been about 10 years but I know I didn't remove the power steering pulley. I believe I just loosen the bolts enough on the bracket to clear the manifold. Nice video.
Thank you SO MUCH for this amazing video tutorial. This was officially my first ever engine repair job -- I have some basic mechanical experience, but nothing to the level required to do this job without some serious guidance. The video was detailed enough that I successfully replaced my lower and upper intake manifold gaskets and managed to repair the infamous coolant leak that is so common on the GMC trucks. Thanks again for the excellent video -- I felt empowered to tackle this job with the confidence that I knew (and understood) what I needed to do. Keep up the great work, it is genuinely appreciated!

It has been a few years since I did a vortec intake on a sbc but I'm pretty sure I didn't have to take power steering pump off and instead only took the bracket bolts loose. I seem to remember the brackets could be moved enough to do the job that way.
Excellent video! Not looking forward to doing this job but, when I do I will use this one for help. I have done the upper intake when I replaced my injectors and wish I knew to do the lower while it was all apart! Same process with all the wires and harnesses... Thanks again.

On the removal of the p/s pump pulley and the a/c compressor bracket, it leaves me stumped. There is a 13mm or 15mm nut (I forget which size) on the driver's side of the engine between the back of the p/s pump and the exhaust manifold. After removing the three bolts and the one nut from the front of the a/c compressor bracket, remove the aforementioned nut between the back of the p/s pump and the exhaust manifold. This will allow the a/c compressor bracket to be slid forward enough to have access to the front lower intake manifold bolt and take it out. The back of the a/c compressor bracket covers that front bolt. Then when the other seven lower manifold bolts are removed the manifold can be lifted out.
I have this thing taken apart, and have been trying step by step to get it done. Time and temperature haven't been helpful in this project, but I think this video is.
WARNING!!! Change the OEM heater hose quick connect when you have the manifold off. Mine seemed ok only to crumble when I tried to reinstall hose. Now I must take intake manifold back off to try and salvage the manifold.
you can remove a broken hose connector with a hacksaw blade, cut 180 degrees apart carefully until almost all the way through then the two pieces can be removed, done this on 2 trucks over the years. to avoid breaking them off in the first place give them a little heat and some wax and turn it cautiously and they will usually come on out. when you are done don't buy a replacement, put in an old school hose connector from a small block and clamp the hose on like the old days.

If you have not already figured it out, it used to go to the power steering pump. Someone has probably already changed out the orfice valve, a piece of tubing with a small hole for the power steering fluid to pass through. The factory set up used an electric piece that was a poor design and then gm realized it looked good on paper and then it failed and everyone had to pay an extra $80 at the dealership for the valve to bypass the factory set up. With out seeing what you are talking about, I'm almost positive that is what you are referring to.
Three months late but im following this tutorial right now and i had an extra red connector as well. It connected behind and underneath the power steering pulley.

That's funny, I think you'll find there are some differences.
Just did this on my 98 sierra. All went smooth until the next day I have a small oil leak coming from somewhere in the back top of the motor. Not sure if the rtv didn’t hold up when I put the intake back on or what. I’ve checked everything and can’t find where the leak starts. This happen to any body else?
Put some silicone on the distributor gasket. As far as the RTV I use ford silicone on everything. EVERYTIME. Never leaks.
Besides tutorial purposes, what was cause of you changing the intake manifold gasket???
+LawBr8ker Thanks for watching! This is a job that is done if you start to have leaks in any of the gasket locations.
Coolant loss, which is caused by deterioration of intake manifold gaskets, due in part, at least, to JUNK factory lower intake manifold. Buy an aftermarket lower intake unit, if you want to permanently "fix" the problem...
What size are the o rings in the fuel lines at the back of the intake ? Just a 5/16 and 1/2” ?
+Ashley Calloway That is correct
Fantastic video helped me beyond expectation. If anyone can help me I have a small plate with one bolt hole in it that I’m sure a 13mm bolt goes thru but I can not figure out where it went. Can anyone help?

Why is it necessary to remove the valve covers?
Can i use my old distributor assembly or do i have to buy a new one
+Dmitrik Guajardo Thanks for watching. You can use the old one if it is still good, no need to purchase a new one!
Those distributors are junk, get an aftermarket one with aluminum housing

Some Models Use Restrictors to Slow Down The Coolant Flow to Absorb More Heat In The Engine
step one, soak that dirty SOB with oven cleaner then power wash it.

There was an extra red connector on my truck on the same loom where the crank sensor comes out of, can't find where it plugs into, can someone help?
There's a black plastic round thing that fell out of intake don't know where it goes
Once you take all the hoses off, how do you keep a track of putting them back where they belong
+Christie Turner Thank you for checking us out. In some cases you may label them to where they plug into, or in other situations you may take a before picture to properly identify the correct location. 1aauto.com
