I've always said Sony learned the wrong lessons from Venom's surprising success in 2018. Sony saw that success and apparently thought: "Hey! I didn't even know Kraven the Hunter HAD a brother, I thought he had a wife though? He's not even interesting in the cartoon, barely interesting enough to carry his own comic book series(probably), and with no Spider-Man, this movie's like Black Widow all over again, or Morbius or Madame Webber all over again. Where's our Mysterio or Kingpin movie? Or the Green Goblin or Sandman movie? Or the Doctor Octopus movie? Or the Carnage solo movie? Or The Scorpion movie? They're at least more compelling villains than Kraven the Hunter! Edit: also what about a Vulture solo movie? The one from the Tom Holland Spider-Man movie? He was probably the best version of The Vulture we had.
@Loki.Lyesmyth No, I wasn't. I don't like Kraven, I've never cared that much about Kraven to begin with. He's never been my favorite Spider-Man supervillain anyways, and this movie wouldn't have helped, even if it was good. Everyone already knows the best Spider-Man supervillain hasn't and had never been Kraven the Hunter. Morbius is a more interesting Spider-Man supervillain, and Kraven just isn't interesting enough for him to have his own movie. Nobody cares enough or wants a Kraven movie. A movie about the Kingpin or Doc Ock would've been a better idea, honestly. And I'm sure those would've been just as bad, if not somehow worse. But at least The Kingpin runs his own criminal enterprise, and his enemies aren't just Spider-Man adjacent. There's The Punisher, Nick Fury, and Daredevil. Fun Fact: Kraven is an animal hunter, so he hunts animals. But in the case of Spider-Man, he's more of a bounty hunter. But with no Spider-Man, there's no point for Kraven to be here. Him hunting The Rhino makes sense, but it's not interesting enough to be the plot of its own movie. It's not intriguing on its own, and nobody wants or cares about Kraven vs. The Rhino. Why would you? There's nothing to care about there. There's no stakes here. Sure his brother's been kidnapped; but why care? Most people don't even know that Kraven HAS a brother in the first place. I thought he had a wife and son or something though...
Jeremy, in the comics, The Foreigner had the capability to hypnotize. Spidey was getting his ass kicked until he figured out to shut out his other senses and rely on his spider-sense to battle him.
@vincentschmitt7597 That sounds about right. I hear Spidey has to completely shut out his other senses and rely mainly on his Spider Sense(or is it Spidey Sense?) to fight him. Also, I've never heard of The Foreigner before now. But for some reason, I want to say I have heard of him...weird.
@DensilGrant What? He wasn't Kraven for a Kraven the Hunter film. Technically, nobody was, because literally NOBODY cares or was even asking for a Kraven the Hunter movie in the first place. I'd rather see a Kingpin movie. Does anyone even care enough to want to see Kraven in a movie in the first place? No? A movie about The Scorpion (Max Gargan), another of Spider-Man's rogues gallery, who's a convicted criminal who also hates J. Jonah Jameson(head of the Daily Bugle, the place where Peter Parker's Spider-Man works), who despises both Jameson and Spider-Man, but is a guy who's literally stuck in a scorpion suit, and wants them both dead because of it. It sounds kinda dumb, and it is dumb. But it'd be more compelling than Madame Web or Morbius. But I'm not even sure if a Sinister Six movie would be worth it at this point. The only convincing comic book movie worthy of anyone's time and money this WHOLE entire year was and still is: "Deadpool & Wolverine". But at least we got another amazing and spectacular review from Jeremy Jahns though, so there's that...how many more Spider-Man characters are there to ruin? I barely cared about Kraven the Hunter in the first Spider-Man cartoon, and I didn't even know he was in the Miles Morales Spider-Man game. I didn't know he even had a brother. I thought he had like; a wife or something?
The movie was NOT AS BAD as people are making this out to be. Yes, the acting and dialogue was pretty rough at moments. Yes, it had some bad graphics but overall the story was good, how Kraven is portrayed was good! I think they balanced the multi comic book characters well. I will say those audios voice over at times did not link very well lol! I give it a 6/10. Had a decent time.
I was confident Sony would screw Kraven up, considering what they did with Madame Webb and Morbius. This review has only confirmed my low confidence in their ability to make a comic book movie.
Imagine Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Revan or Kyle Katarn! His intense performances and action skills would bring these characters to life perfectly. Who else agrees? 🔥
Yeah, he'd be a good Katarn. Revan? Not so sure on that front (still attached to Keanu on that one, and I'd think Revan works better as a slightly older dude based on his experiences). But definitely a good Katarn.
When characters rights are so spread between different studios, this is something that always will keep them from reaching the storytelling potential and character building they need, to be exceptional movie adaptations
That was my first thought as well when I saw the trailer, "That can't be Pollox Troy, is it? He looks like he barely aged if it is." _Looks up on IMDB_ ... "It IS him!"
Venom makes a lot of money [even 'The Last Dance' made nearly $500 million] so PG-13 clearly works while for Kraven they needed 'R-Rating' as a selling point [which probably won't work].
5:33 616 comics Hypnotic Blackout: Foreigner has the ability to induce a 10-second hypnotic trance in someone by making eye contact with them. By using this ability he can make an opponent believe he can move at super-fast speeds, or by running from the scene while they are entranced, he can fool them into thinking he can teleport himself away.[1]
Crazy that mid 2000s the CGI was top tier compared to now. Speaks volumes of those that brought it to life compared to those that inherited it to take the next step forward. 😂
Good CGI exists today and is often better than what we got in the 2000s (Thanos is a prime example of this). The issue is that VFX workers today are overworked & underpaid. CGI itself has improved, the industry has not.
@@Dakr2000 i think the quanitity of it SEVERALLY hurts it. it used to be the polish on the stone. now its the stone, the hand , the body, the background, and sometimes even the very scene itself. when it goes from making something something more, to everything... its hard to give a shit. cause then its just cgi cartoon
@@BaithNa Theoretically, villain origin stories pre-Spider-Man COULD actually work (not with Venom though, since his origin is dependant on Parker) so long as they're actually treated as VILLAIN origins. And so long as they don't exist in a world where Spider-Man never comes to be. The main problem is they want to use these characters' IP but don't have the stones to make an actual villain film.
What i want to know is how did we get here? Movies were given to so many individual characters in the spiderverse and almost none had spiderman in them….like how did this not get addressed?
2:30 I remember last year when SM2 came out, this movie was supposed to release like a month after and I said people will compare it to the video game and be extremely disappointed. Makes me wonder if that was part of the reason they pushed it back a whole year despite being complete.
Venom's success in 2018 really went straight to the heads of Sony's higher-ups. They thought they could create a string of successful Spiderman universe films featuring other characters, but that just wasn't the case.
The Foreigner can hypnotize people for 10 seconds if you look in his eye's, that's how he almost beat Spider-man in the comics. He also got with the Black Cat, and also told Sabretooth he would be a terrible assassin due to his inability to blend in. Then Sabretooth, who hunts Spider-man down to prove his worth to The Foreigner, rips his own face off trying to remove the webbing that Spider-man shot on his face.
To be honest I don’t think anyone who truly loves film could give a fuck about a review of this film anyway. We already knew years ago that these films would be a director coming in and trying to polish a turd. 😂 anyway great video as always.
it does sound like a waste of time but also not the worst thing ever. at least he didn't give it a dogs*hit or have to be drunk to enjoy it. it may be forgettable but it sounds like there are a few things to like in it.
I don't think that rumor is true. Sony will still make these movies; they are just taking a break because Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4, Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse, and the live-action Spider-Man: Noir are coming out. This isn't the Sony villain movie.
Yea I don’t know why people are celebrating like this is the end. No one bothers to look at the box office or how successful these movies are outside of the US. Sony is raking billions in and there are still people waiting for them to sell the rights back to marvel 😂😂😂
@Dakr2000 I don't think they will sell them, they will just scrap this one and restart again and likely try to work out a deal with Disney so they can do a new one that's able to use spiderman and do a rebooted Sony universe
Well they’re trying to not loose the rights, so they have to produce a Spider-Man related movie ever few years, after those projects who knows what they’ll try next
It strikes me that these Sony-verse movies should be so easy to make: just make them violent, gonzo movies with outlandish characters like the first couple Blade movies or Deadpool as opposed to these tax write-offs with trailers.
I miss the days when villains were just villainous. It's one thing for them to be complicated people who have their own point of view about why they do what they do. Mr. Glass and Thanos are perfect examples. It's another thing to just say Kraven and Venom aren't evil - they're just antiheroes, and leave it at that.
Better than Madam Web & Morbius but not something you (and your family) should be dropping $8 - $15 tickets on - especially if you plan on getting drinks - popcorn. It isn't a bad $5 purchase to stream if you get bored one night. Honestly, Sony probably could have licensed Kraven & Morbius to Netflix (the 'ol Daredevil & Punisher treatment) and had a 2 - 3 season run with them (really, that's about all the story telling they'd need). The characters simply don't need a lot of CGI stuff.
@@marxvargas7697 I’m convinced Venom 3 is a product of the writing strike. There are so many elements and plot lines in the movie that are fleshed out at different levels it just makes sense when you look it as an amalgamation of a bunch of scripts made before the strike. As for Venom 2, I just think they didn’t take it as seriously as the first.
Which is exactly why Batman will always the greatest catalogue of villains. You could make a standalone film about almost every Batman villain, even some of the lesser known ones, they’re just great characters with or without Batman
@MM-jc7uv Yes, I agree completely. You could make a great Black Mask or The Ventriloquist/Scarface type movie, Deadshot, Deathstroke, Killer Croc, The Penguin (oh wait, he's got a series), Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, The Mad Hatter, and especially Mr. Freeze or The Riddler. They're Batman villains yes, but even if Batman wasn't around, they'd still probably have something to do as villains. They mainly hate Batman, to be sure, but that's because Batman is the one who usually foils them. Or they're just crazy, but yeah, most of them could get really awesome standalone movies. Because they're great, and we care about them whether the Batman's there or not. Kraven is just a guy. A guy who hunts for the thrill, and nothing else. He's not an anti-hero, with a secret heart of gold or a guy who hunts because a rhinoceros killed his mother or whatever dumb reason, he's just a hunter. It's in his namesake "Kraven The Hunter". And he's not even that interesting anyways. He's a boring and bland and generic Spider-Man villain. Always has been. Ever since the cartoon. One good appearance in a game, isn't enough. Kraven just isn't intriguing or interesting enough to have his own movie without Spider-Man, or even with Web-Head, I doubt it would've been less boring. It would still be forgettable. Having a good onscreen version of The Rhino versus Kraven just isn't enough to carry the plot of an entire film. It's a filler episode of a forgotten Spider-Man cartoon, because Spidey's not even in it. It's just 2 Spider-Man villains fighting each other, and not even as fun as that could've been...
I just saw John Campea's out of theater reaction and he totally CRAPED on this movie and was legit angry. Sony should be forced to give the rights back to Marvel 100%
After watching Kraven. It's not bad nor its not great either. I feel, people and critic are over exaggerating as a bad. It's sure has questionable changes in supporting characters from the comics, dodgy cgi and odd editing choices. I feel like there's were some stuff left that should've been in it more. But it was an okay movie just like many Sony and Disney's MCU superheroes movies that came before. It's worth watchable if your curious enough about the character be that in theater or streaming it later. It wouldn't say it's all comic accurate, though. Just my two cent.
I agree man. It was a fun action flick. Idk why everyone is so dead set on hating it. Sure, it has flaws, but they didn't get in the way of enjoying the movie

Oh, Russell Crowe is Kraven's dad, so Kraven's brother is Superman.
And Hercules
😂😂😂
Were you not entertained?
It's been decades since I read comics but I think I recall The Foreigner hypnotizing spider-man in fights.
This review got me way more hyped for your end of the year lists than it did for Kraven 😂 Always look forward to your top 10s!
While I'm not kraving to watch Kraven the hunter. I'm always Kravin' for a fresh Jeremy Jahns review for any movie!!!
Smh 😒

Been watching you for around ten years now Jeremy! You are the best and my favorite reviewer!
I was confident Sony would screw Kraven up, considering what they did with Madame Webb and Morbius. This review has only confirmed my low confidence in their ability to make a comic book movie.
Great review, thanks Jeremy! As a fellow fan of LoTR, please make a video about the War of the Rohirrim!!
Imagine Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Revan or Kyle Katarn! His intense performances and action skills would bring these characters to life perfectly. Who else agrees? 🔥

But that Kyle Katarn fancast is inspired so well done lol
Yeah, he'd be a good Katarn. Revan? Not so sure on that front (still attached to Keanu on that one, and I'd think Revan works better as a slightly older dude based on his experiences). But definitely a good Katarn.

Still trying to comprehend as to why Venom couldn’t be rated R but for Kraven there’s no problem or hesitation for it.
Need to make it kid friendly
Because they were not desperate when venom came out, only because it was the first movie in this universe

Venom makes a lot of money [even 'The Last Dance' made nearly $500 million] so PG-13 clearly works while for Kraven they needed 'R-Rating' as a selling point [which probably won't work].
Deadpool proves that rated r super hero movies can make a lot of money so now they do it

Hypnotic Blackout: Foreigner has the ability to induce a 10-second hypnotic trance in someone by making eye contact with them.

This is the last one, for now anyway
The reason they aren't fire is because they don't have spider man
@@BaithNa Theoretically, villain origin stories pre-Spider-Man COULD actually work (not with Venom though, since his origin is dependant on Parker) so long as they're actually treated as VILLAIN origins. And so long as they don't exist in a world where Spider-Man never comes to be. The main problem is they want to use these characters' IP but don't have the stones to make an actual villain film.

2:30 I remember last year when SM2 came out, this movie was supposed to release like a month after and I said people will compare it to the video game and be extremely disappointed. Makes me wonder if that was part of the reason they pushed it back a whole year despite being complete.
They probably wanted to distance themselves from the other failed movies, but who knows.

Gotta give Jeremy credit for knowing and understanding Marvel comics characters more than Sony writers could ever do.
I don't think that rumor is true. Sony will still make these movies; they are just taking a break because Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4, Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse, and the live-action Spider-Man: Noir are coming out. This isn't the Sony villain movie.
They are stopping this particular universe those movies were never connected to each other, you can have multiple different universes under ips
Yea I don’t know why people are celebrating like this is the end. No one bothers to look at the box office or how successful these movies are outside of the US. Sony is raking billions in and there are still people waiting for them to sell the rights back to marvel 😂😂😂
@Dakr2000
I don't think they will sell them, they will just scrap this one and restart again and likely try to work out a deal with Disney so they can do a new one that's able to use spiderman and do a rebooted Sony universe
Making villain origin movies and turning them all into Antiheroes is a bad idea, especially without the actual Hero in the story.
I miss the days when villains were just villainous. It's one thing for them to be complicated people who have their own point of view about why they do what they do. Mr. Glass and Thanos are perfect examples. It's another thing to just say Kraven and Venom aren't evil - they're just antiheroes, and leave it at that.
Jeremy delaying the start of the video longer than Sony delaying the release of this movie 😂
My gf didn’t even know this is a Spider-Man villain
Imagine if Spider-Man actually fights any of his villains in movies

Better than Madam Web & Morbius but not something you (and your family) should be dropping $8 - $15 tickets on - especially if you plan on getting drinks - popcorn. It isn't a bad $5 purchase to stream if you get bored one night. Honestly, Sony probably could have licensed Kraven & Morbius to Netflix (the 'ol Daredevil & Punisher treatment) and had a 2 - 3 season run with them (really, that's about all the story telling they'd need). The characters simply don't need a lot of CGI stuff.
They still don't understand that Spider-Man villains don't work without Spider-Man, specially Kraven.
The lack of Spiderman wasn’t what made Venom 2 & 3 so bad.
@@Dakr2000okay, this one is so true. Like, why did a bunch of adults approved bad writing?
The movie was actually really good. I enjoyed it. Everyone has their opinions and I'm happy that I saw it to form my own.
I agree man. It was a fun action flick. Idk why everyone is so dead set on hating it. Sure, it has flaws, but they didn't get in the way of enjoying the movie
Kraven should have been someone that looks like Khal Drogo, not Soldier Boy.
Jason Momoa would be good as well.
my favorite part was when they announced kraven's 4 season spinoff sitcom, that's so Kraven.
