In this video I take you through the skills you'll need to progress your snowboarding from hitting boxes to trying your first rail features. You should make sure that you are comfortable hitting a wide variety of box features before trying your first rails to make the progression easier and minimize the risk of falling. You'll want to take time to figure out the proper speed for the feature, approach like a 50-50 with your trajectory aiming towards the end of the rail, and try to catch the rail with your snowboard to help lock onto the feature and slide all the way to the end. Start on larger tubes that are lower to the snow if you mountain has those available, and work your way up to skinnier features that require a larger ollie and more speed to get on to. I hope these tips help you to hit your first rail features and start a whole new curve of progression! Let me know any questions you have in the comments below, thanks for watching.
First like view and comment can I get pinned?
Congrats on the pin. LOL
gona get my first board slide this season. i can feel it !!!!
Bruh Sweet good luck
Bruh Sweet you got it!
Bruh Sweet my main tip is you have to go for it and fully commit, and it will go smooth and it will be awesome!
Good luck man u got it
Good luck dude
Rails aren’t really that much harder than boxes, they’re just way more intimidating, and it hurts a bit more when you fall, but the most important thing is to commit. I know multiple people that are definitely skilled enough to ride them, but they just swerve away when they’re about to hit it
Thanks bro I feel like your talking to me man
Yes you nailed it. I even think it’s easier to land on.
this is exactly what I need to work on
Really awesome advice. Can’t wait for the new season
Looking fly guys! Can’t wait to get back out and board again!
Hoping to keep progressing towards this in Whistler this season! Thanks guys :)
Lol so keen to board I cant sleep... 3am right now lolol
ikr cant wait for Winter!!
@@slayedZA where you at bro
@@zacmason im in North Vancouver, doing one more season on Mt Seymour and next season i am aiming for Mt Cypress, all in the northshore. Also, originally from Cape Town, South Africa so changed from surfing to snowboarding and summer has been waaay too long!!
@@slayedZA nice !!! Do you stay for the whole season
Yeah, I live here now but i'm no pro, just stoked! :D Snow on Whistler!
Thanks TJ! Awesome transition tips! As always you make it look easy, but that helps boost the confidence to try new things. Adding this to my goals for 2018/2019!
yeww!
This is something I so need to learn
Yo TJ, when coming up to the feature, do you want to be looking at where you are getting on then look at the end, or just look at the end of the rail from start to finish?
chris taylor looking down the feature will help you line it up right and give you the best chance of getting the whole rail. When you are first starting one of the top priorities should be not clipping the rail as you Ollie on so you’ll have to find a balance of what works for you
I like to look like 3 feet in front of me
love spring conditions
Shred1904 always
TJ, on your park/jib boards do you fully detune your edges or just the contact points? Because you ride just as good without catching edges even with the demo boards which I assume aren’t defined. Thanks for the input of you see this brother.
me and my mom got new boards first board for me yessss i live in minnesota so i have to wait till nov
I’ve never hit a box or rail but I’m going to put a rail in my backyard to practice. Will this be helpful so when I go to the mountain I can do rails and boxes.
Ill have to try a rail next time. Im pretty confident on boxes and flat rails, just the curved rails freak me out.
What do you think of park city Utah. I am from Australia and I am going to park city. I don't know what to expect,so do you now anything about it. If you do please reply.
Joel McManus park city is really fun, you’ll love it. Try to check out Brighton as well if you can while you are there
Board Archive thanks what is the snow like and also where exactly is Brighton. Thanks heaps for replying though.
@@joelmcmanus4997 there are several hills all together by park city I heard canyons is a better hill. Snow is cold and light if your lucky it'll be deep they get lake effect snow there.
What’s a good tip to 180 off? I keep catching an edge as if I’m doing a 180 off the ground.
Would be dope if you would make an in depth tutorial regarding board slides on rails.
Thanks!!! I am comfortable hopping on front side 50-50, but backside 50-50 feels so scary!!
But hopping on backside board feels more natural than backside 50-50. Is it just me!?
thats pretty normal, backside 50-50 is scarier than backside boardslide for most people. It's good to practice and learn though!

But this definitely comes helpful. We have a couple guys in our group that managed to land their first boxes this year with 2 of them managing to land a mini rail
OtheR WAY awesome!
For the start of rails I recommend ones closer to the ground you don’t get as much anxiety
You should give advice on hitting very skinny rails
Saw you shred up on Monday bro love it
When doing board slides on the rail, what stops the edge from catching? The board is flat on the rail right?
You catch edges on snow because the board digs in as the snow moves…. Metal on metal my guy, nowhere else for the board to go but forward
@@slickdanger_as long as they're well looked after features. A detune/1+ degree base angle can make a huge difference too if it's only a board for park
This is going to help me so much!
Thank you TJ!
Village8 shoutout!
Love it !
Thai USA Winter Sports thanks Napa!
You thanks good video
I tried one of those boxes once it was way to slick, I busted my ass pretty good. I'll stick to the trees
keep that base flat
Skirt skirt on the tow rope
I’m not gonna lie I didn’t have a ton of skill with boxes but one day my buddy just took me out boarding and straight sent it on a rail first try
