Also, if you don't like the gear you can usually sell it for the same price or more in the season.
You need to make a video going down the mountain with a beginner board. Literaly just 2 pieces of rubber holding your feet in . That would be so funny
Guess you won’t be dropping into the Christmas chute at Alyeska??
can you please reply to me
That’s my friends that you gave that board to and you made her day then. She still talks about this video so thank you again for being awesome!
This video goes to show that technique is so much more important than gear. But also good gear never hurts.
totally agree
💯
🤘🏼
This should be the mantra for every sport that exists tbh
Although as a beginner good gear will be more beneficial to building a solid foundation rather than compensating through low quality or poorly made equipment
I bought an old rental board (w/bindings) from a local shop for $60 and then spent 200 on boots. I highly recommend this strategy
Boots seemed to be lowly prioritized, but can easily make or break the whole experience. Would've been cool to see Buckhouse try the board with his boots.
did the same thing, brand new K2 boots and old as hell used board. No regrets
board from friend+ binding from friend+ 280 boa boots=👌👌👌
This is the way
Insoles are super important too.... $50 soles in cheap boots are better than nothing lol
I feel like youre better off buying a used board for the same price, from a reputable manufacturer
Or on sale… I got a new top of the line handmade board from an American small business on a black Friday sale for less than 300 brand new. I think it was like 230-240+ tax and shipping. Asymmetrical wide twin with all the bells and whistles.
As long as it isn’t beat to hell. I would 100% agree with this
Ya, I picked up last year's Jibsaw for like 225, new, in September. Needed a solid hard snow board and it is surprisingly good.
@@HeyUncleAdid it include the bindings and boots?
@@kayla114 it did not… but my old ones are still working for now. Board only.
As someone who bought this exact same setup as his first snowboard I'll throw my 2 cents in. I'm 6'8" and a size 13 shoe, though at the time I thought I was a 14. I bought the 170 W (at least it's somewhere in that range) with the 14 boot. When I got it, there was an ungodly amount of toe drag. After 2 trips I bought new size 13 boots so that they'd fit better and because the boots were trash (as you all saw.) After getting new boots the board rode okay. I learned my first indy on it, which was cool. But as I got better I noticed that it didn't hold it's edge well, even as my form got way better. An alright board for beginners to be honest, but you NEED different boots.
My boy got this board for his first season and ended up getting a new one the next season because he progressed so fast and wanted to get a name branded board but he loved it and he helped him progress fast
Fwiw the way you rode made that setup look like double its cost. You’re genuine, dude, thanks so much for the shoutout and for making all our day on the mountain!
Thanks bro! You rock 🙏🏼
As someone who is just starting out on an actual snowboard, I have this whole set up that I bought secondhand. It does the job for me so if you’re trying to get into the game, this is a hell of a deal and not a bad beginner board.
When I got my first board and boots I got them off of Facebook marketplace and honestly, they work fine and had the board for 3 years. I just out grew the boots. Just got my first job so I'm planning on buying a brand new board this season.
It's my first season with frequent access to the mountain and I thrifted a full setup for $120. I rode it a few days until I was sure I wanted to board and then just got nice bindings/boots. I think as long as a board is the right size and decent condition its fine. New boots were a big upgrade though.
where do you thrift boards bro??
Going snow boarding at wolf
Creek next weekend . Can’t wait . Watching you gets me excited . Going to buy my own setup soon. Tired of renting them out
I started on a 150 dollar snowboard set and i rode it for 3 seasons, i learnt to ride very good and just upgraded the board, you can defienetlystart on something like this to see if you like it.
💯
Hit Keystone today, and I saw someone with this EXACT set up. The boots looked cold, but he was gettin it!
I bet the boots were cold! I was happy it was such a nice day when I road it lol
Cold feet is the one thing I cannot handle up there. I’ve shred in t shirts, thin layers. But if my feet get cold, I’m done.
I'm just glad you didn't kill yourself. 😆 This was a great idea for a video. Awesome job as always Johnathan and Cody!! 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you brother!!
First board I ever got was that system board set up you showed and for a beginner it’s really good and it holds up well. I’ve given it to several people to learn on
Nice!!
7:54 - 8:11
That was clean as hell dude
why was this unironically some of the best footage of you shredding lmfao
🤣😂
No idea how those boots felt or did the job but I can tell you in all honesty, I still ride with my 1994 pair of Burton 2-Tongue boots and love them! I love the flexibility that absolutely zero boots today can provide. I love your videos of ranking ski resorts around the United States!
They're flexible because they are almost 30 years old😂😂😂
@MyFirstInstinct My boots were flexible out of the box but have broken in in their time lol. I miss the old snowboarding days when style was more important than how many times you can spin or high jump. I'm old school like the old days like Jeff Brushie and Craig Kelly were top competitors.
That is so rad!!
Thanks for the review. Good to keep the manufacturers honest. My choice was to get a last year Nitro Prime Raw for €200 and then add Union Forces and Burton Ruler BOAs (that were obviously a lot more combined than this setup, but I can probably use the bindings and boots with my next board as well).
💯 you can! That was a good move
mogul run to grab was nasty!!!! shoutout your camera man for this one! @8:01
Cody kills it!!
@@JohnathanBuckhousethat was movie quality!
Nice video! Gives some people a cheaper option for just starting out. Love that you have it away at the end too!
🙏🏼
I got a rossignol sashimi xv with a pro deal for $300, its a $700 board and vans linerless boots for $60 with a rep promo code then now drive pros for $250. My set up this year is a disgusting surfy pow slasher that didnt kill my bank account. I'm stoked. 😊
It's funny because I constantly see people asking "should I buy xxx used board" on reddit. and I myself HAVE tried those Amazon Boots. [which yes they SUCK so much.] So i recommended that snowboard package to somebody the other day with the [do not get the boots] part. as a starting thing which will work for a while. just upgrade later, but do not skimp on the boots. get good boots.
Always good boots!
I just buy used. I spent 120 for a 145 lamar with bindings. At that price there's no stress sending jumps over rocks or hitting side hits on non-powder days. I got new 150 dollar boots from my dad but my buddies have been running used boots for a long time and they've gotten some good deals. Plus when you buy the no name actually eating a rock or a tree is more likely to cause cracks or even snap the board.
This board combo is better than the one you dont have. This board has more potential than any casual first maybe 2 year boarder can push on it.
💯
I've been renting, and I was going to buy an Amazon board, but i went to snowboard surplus store in SLC instead. I managed to get a used Ride Wildlife 2022 with bindings for $200. 100% was worth waiting!
Tons of haters in the comments. For 300$ what did u expect? Full kit this is incredible. This dude is putting this board through way more than it’s meant to be used for. This is meant to learn of flats. Greens and blues. And i know it’s absolutely perfect for someone learning. Stop hating. This is perfect for a ton of people I know.
Great video Buckhouse! I already own a full setup but still fun to watch! you always make your videos appealing to all viewers!
Yes! So stoked on the feedback and that you enjoyed 🙏🏼
Went to Keystone last year for the first time. Such a blast! Wish I lived in a place that got snow.
What jacket are you wearing? It looks cool!
Dc boba Fett jacket
Just bought the goggles!! Can't wait to ride them in like 2 weeks! So dope, going to shred hard this season
Yes! Stoked you got a pair!
I learned to snowboard on a cheap board. After buying a burton and having a strap break and switching back. I got hurt on the cheap board. Couldn't do anything with it. Was great to learn balance, but when you have barely to no skill at all the board will help greatly. My personal experience.
I feel like people should just wait for a summer sale. I bought my burton board brand new with bindings for only $100 more and it comes with a bag too
Great way for someone who doesn’t have access or knowledge of used ski/snowboard swaps.
Purchasing my first setup now! Got a 2020 nitro prime screen and salamon bindings, haven't gotten boots yet, so far I've gotten really rare deals, only spent 220$ so far on the set up, hoping to keep the boots at around 200-250
my dad got a full set from The House and it was only 300 for boots board and bindings, it was made by a company called chamonix.
That actually answered my question, THANKS MAN
I am a TOTAL beginner (my profile pic, is one of those half-day intro to ski/snowboard packages here in Europe)
I was WONDERING about a starter set from Amazon
I think I will buy the set (got decent boots), then use the board for a year or two and just rip it up.
That is kinda what I did, personally what I would suggest doing is after a season or when you feel comfortable get a new pair of bindings and replace those. The bindings I had on my board were almost identical to the one in the video and was the next obvious weak-point. The board is honestly good to keep for a good while if you are fine just replacing the bindings with a good new set, my next upgrade is a new board as I have a really nice pair of boots and bindings with my cheap board. Just keep in mind that you will have to take care of the board yourself (Waxing, and sharpening the edges). Just wanted to give my thoughts on this, and what I am doing myself.
liner-less boots are sold a lot, they just offer more flex if thats your thing, some people prefer it
I literally have the System complete set that you showed as another option for budget snowboarding and it absolutely SHREDS. I've had it for maybe 5 or 6 season passes and its great.
Crazy the bindings have still held up for that long!
I second the System set up. I bought it 5 years ago when I was first getting into the sport and finally upgraded my board this year. The bindings lasted me about 2.5 seasons and the boots are so much better than the ones that came in the set from the video.
I was going to comment this! My amazon complete was around 410$ and made by System and this thing is pretty great. The bindings are so much sturdier as well as the boots are thick and have a nice liner. Just had to add some stickers and i have been shredding for a few years on it!
I also have the system setup, I've had zero issues, the boots are actually super comfortable, got the rear entry bindings and also have had zero problems. Much better than renting
Have the same setup, the boots are super comfortable. Got the rear entry bindings and also have had no issues.
Honestly. If you are going out of state and don't own a kit buying this and getting it shipped to your hotel might be your cheapest option. Renting boots or getting cheap boots ain't that bad. Donate it when you are done and feel good about yourself and save money.
Donating the board was the best part 🙌🏼 Love the idea!
Thrift stores can be good too. I got my boots, board and bindings for $55 at my thrift store. The board is big for me but everything else is awesome and less than a rental for 1 day.
I loved the new boot goofin comment. That show was amazing
Shout out to you for being a gentlemen to someone who fell... appriciate that
🙏🏼
And a skier, no less. Unheard of!
Which brands are currently the best for gear (boots, bindings, board)? Haven't been on a board in about 8 years. Previously rode for about 15 years. Trying to get back in the game.
Great video. Hopefully someone can help you with the complete Ski set up next!
Yes 🙌🏼
I bought a similar setup from the house for 300. It was chamonix branded.
Rode it for 4 years, was good for what it was, cheaper than renting. Your better off buying something used of Facebook marketplace
💯
Just came across your videos a couple of days and enjoy your vids! Love the Boba fett coat!
I’m a casual and only go a few times a year, but the set up looked pretty good for the price
Dude! Those boots that came with the package are the boots I ran last year 😂
Nooooo 🤣😂
25% off 318 otd for a burton custom 22/23 pink/redish bottom, from play it again sports. I had to buy the inserts for $12 and just to be sure, i had my shop epoxy a small crack in tail/sidewall/topsheet. So 340 for a killer board that looked like it was either used one time or stolen and sold to play it again lol. was priced at 4 and he wanted 320 plus tax at 20% off. I said I'll take it right now, if you can do 3 plus tax. I can't wait for lower MI season to really get going. I go into play it agains all the time looking for flip$boards or boards i want to try and then can sell without a loss. I got an 08 custom for 60 and freestyle bindings for 50, not the greatest board i ever rode but plenty for a friend to use and me not to worry about them damaging it. Lighter and better than any rental a buddy could use. Especially with tht purl all temp brick i just got w/ buckhouses code!
I just came across you account and I love snowboarding but then I saw the keystone gondola and now you getting a sub
Start to finish that was rad AF. Good on ya m8.
UR SO GOOD HOW LONG U BEEN SNOWBOARDING
15 years
I started with a used Burton Custom board that had Nitro bindings with 150 Euro...
Let's say I learned the hard way with that board...
Anyway, better to start with used boards than cheap ones
Same. The usual snowboarder/skier goes into the mountains for a week. It does not worth it to put 1k+ into new euipment for just putting it into the shelf for 359 days a year. My used Burton custom X cost around 150€, my bootes and binding additional 400 as i always wanted to have new boots.
Thats the best way for those who ride just a week in a year in my opinion.
Love the guy repping the recess jacket
🙌🏼
Bro your camera guy is gnarly 🔥
💯
having an insta360 camera makes it easy, trust me.
honestly its probably cheaper to have a new one of these delivered to ski destination than rentals, or paying to fly with board.. risk losing it..etc.. doesn't look bad
I don't want the setup. But watching you ride makes me want it.
Loved this and sickest edit that board has ever seen !!!
Hahaha Thanks man!
hi i bought the board im in mn Minnesota we have no snow ive ben waiting for snow
Sorry!
That's so awesome of you man. So cool
Great video idea! Props ! Wish we could all give away our old decks to people that would actually appreciate them. Help the sport grow JB! 🙌🙌
All about helping the sport grow! Maybe one day you will find someone that needs it!
im looking for an affordable board if youre in the southeast
Glad I watched the whole video. Good stuff
I got a staubert summit board on Amazon cause it’s more affordable. I’ve only snowboarded twice this will be my third time. Do you think Amazon boards are still good enough to learn on?
I was watching your other videos and stumbled on this one. I was at Keystone that same day on an almost identical board to that. I just bought better bindings and boots.
My first snowboard was 800 dollars I like see people trying cheap snowboard for beginners like i was in my 8 year old era but now I am expert snowboarder know. You are very kind person.
I love how he said,”(So you don’t have to)”
😂
6:05 - 6:15 was soo satisfying 🤙🏼
How do you like, never catch an edge? I can't even go down a slight-slope almost level strip without just wiping out LOL
A lot of practice! You got this 💪🏼
I wanna be like you when I’m older ur so good at snowboarding
The cameraman is even more skilled for keeping up
you seem like a. really amazing person....your'e an inspiration ❤
Symbolic is made by Burton, that is why you got the Burton sticker
Oh no way 🤣😂
Dope ending!!!!
Stoked you enjoyed 🙏🏼
@JohnathanBuckhouse hell yea bro!!! Waiting for you and the crew to come out to Snowbowl AZ this year! Hopefully we get that ElNino winter that was promised!!!
First day seems to be fine, but an amazon review says that after 3-4 days the board start falling apart. I wonder if renting still more convenient for starters
I bought a used high end Santa Cruz board, some used mid tier shoes and a pair of used flow bindings for 100 bucks
I was going to buy that last summer but decided to get one from the local ski swap
I got this bord for a starter and everything was pretty good except the boots
Last year i had to get a new board bc i grew to much and now i have a capita birds of the feather board and it is so nice
Nice thing about flexible boots (I still have mine from the mid-'90's) is that you can keep them on and drive home in them!
I've also switched between the old flexible boots and newer stiff ones within the same weekend on the slopes, and I've found that the soft boots give more control, and more comfort when stopping for lunch and whatnot, but are fatiguing on the slopes especially when riding on the toe side. The stiff boots obviously give more support and less fatigue, but seem less responsive and wooden, especially when switching from the soft boots.
your the best youtuber ever
😃
Thank you!
"no boots" was the real gift
😂
Where is this? Tons of groomed snow! ❄️
Bro I’m on a protosynthesis never summer board and I couldn’t compete with you while your on that
I flinched each time he landed on the groomed piste. Needs to absorb more of the impact with his full body otherwise those knees won't last very long.
Really 🤔 Thankfully the knees feel good 🙌🏼
hi new to your channel. fkn looove how well filmed this is! so neat, fkn shreds man
My first board was a gnu carbon high beam with switch a type step ones from the 90’s. $110 on the bay. 😂
So sick 😂
can we acknowledge that the camera man is probably better than Johnathan i mean its so smooth
Would this be good for a board after my rental time is up
I bought a rental for the whole season for $250
Probably not
This Video was dope especially the Giveaway!
I first got introduced in the sport back in 2019, even before officially boarding the place i was staying had a cheap board and work boots and started off with a little slope and then months later boom actually getting on the bunny slopes. Years passed my friends got into it and i wanted to go with them. Just last Year i got the Aura Pro2s, Entry Level helmet, pants with my own money and stuff ive been given were goggles and gloves.
As of right now im super hyped to get back out there!! My car is dialed, got my own board/bindings, the anytime pass Big Bear, and the whole WTAPS x Vans Snow Kit oh and also two GoPros.
IM SO READYY AHHHH!!!
Yes 🙌🏼 I am so pumped for you man! Enjoy the season!
@@JohnathanBuckhouse thank you 🙏
that was a great video my dude!
i bought my boots board and a helmet for 300$ almost all new but the boots and board had been used like once but they were moving
I’ve never bought any gear before I’m trying to figure out what size boot I should get I wear a 10.5 in shoes should I get the size 9 or 10 with this kit i definitely think I’ll get it to start on
If you can go into a ski shop and try boots on. That is the best way! The only gear I think you should go into a shop for. Even if you are going on a trip. Buy them on the trip. Getting the wrong boots will ruin your day, trip, and season!
My k2 afterblack has a problem turning at slow speed just gotta send it.
🤣😂
Your so good I want to get to your level one day lol
One do you can!
Thanks
Used gear is where the deals are at. Just bought a board, bindings, boots and a jacket all high end in new condition from two years ago that retailed for $1600. I paid $200! 🏂
Respect to the camera man
honestly, I can't understand how with the new models just the board is priced at 700 or 800 bucks without something special like full carbon top layer or some fancy core. it's just your standard ageold setup with a wooden core, some glass/carbon fibre strips for tension and different flex/stiffness areas, some edges and a top and base layer. sure, you are also paying for the development that was involved and some testing of new ideas but since a few years now there wasn't really a huge revolution in board-technologies so it's mostly just the same thing from the year before with a new design. I have 4 or 6 boards (2 "normal" ones, 2 splits and 2 90s one that don't really count) and all of them do exactly what they are supposed to do while none of them cost me more than 200 Euros. just buying the model from the pre-season usually cuts the price by almost half so either buy those or buy used ones from the start because there are tons of almost fresh boards, it's easy to tell if they are still good or completly shot and if we are honest with ourselves: first day out with a new, mint fresh board you are bound to hit a rock anyways 😂
nice guy;-) for the givaway, bday gift 🎉 ❤ its better then 0-board
