- In 1982, the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Population (UNWGIP) held its first conference on August 9. Twelve years later, (on December 23, 1994) the UN General Assembly in its resolution marked August 9 as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. Even though India voted in favour of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, 2007, it didn’t give separate recognition to indigenous people in the country. While the debate over indigenous identities continues, recognition of the fifth and sixth schedule -constitutionally guaranteed reservation for 705 ethnic groups- known as Scheduled Tribes (ST), Forest Conservation Act, 1980; Panchayat Extension to Scheduled Areas Act, 1996; Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
Apart from India, indigenous communities are the most neglected worldwide.
South America and the Caribbean is home to 50 million indigenous peoples (600 major groups) . They have a 60% higher infant mortality rate as compared to the rest of the population. There is also a high rate of substance abuse, depression and HIV/AIDS. Two centuries of colonial rule and migration of slaves have had an adverse impact on their health.
Asia is home to 14.2 million indigenous peoples (750 groups). They die early, have high rates of malnutrition and child mortality. The languages spoken by indigenous populations are not recognised by the state either.
Africa also constitutes 14.2 million indigenous groups (34 groups). Major health issues include high infant mortality, HIV/AIDS, anemia and tuberculosis. In sub-Saharan Africa, the ratio of traditional healers to the population is 1:500. For doctors trained in western medicine the ratio is 1:40,000.
The Pacific with 12 million(data on groups unavailable) has high rates of avoidable deaths, malnutrition, alcohol abuse, smoking, mental stress and depression. Colonialism and Christianity destroyed traditional healthcare practices and introduced new diseases among indigenous people.
North America with 6.6 million people(5 groups) has high prevalence diabetes. Suicide rate in indigenous young (15-24 years) is 3.5 times higher than the national average in addition to violence and alcohol abuse. Government policy in the US and Canada to forcefully send indigenous kids to boarding schools to expunge their identities has pushed suicide rates and mental distress higher.
The Arctic with 2.75 million peoples (2 groups) has high rates of chronic diseases, suicide and tobacco-related diseases. Colonisation of Greenland by Denmark for instance has affected the health of Sami people, who do not speak Danish, the common language of doctors.
Russia with only 50,000 people (4 groups) has high levels of genetic and psychological disorders, stress, myopia, heart diseases and cancer. Migration has reduced indigenous population from 56% of the total population in 1926 to just 4.4% in 1989. Pollution is extensively degrading the habitat of indigenous people as well.
Although they comprise less than five per cent of the world population, indigenous peoples protect 80 per cent of the world's biodiversity in the ecosystems in which they have lived for centuries and it becomes extremely important to recognise this contribution in a warming world.
In the face of global disaster indigenous knowledge is the key to survival for all of humanity
So the real doctors of NATURAL WORLD are not given their worth of respect and space. That would lead to our doom 😢 plz let them live their lives in peace n protect our natural world n the species 🙏 love from India 🇮🇳
If indigenous people want to live their natural lives, they must be encouraged by their governments in all aspects. They are a great resource celebrating Planet Earth.
People who live natural, simple lifestyle in peaceful nature 😌, away from dominance of Food and pharma companies and corrupt politicians
A wonderful video for International Indigenous Day.
Down here in Australia, we are coming up to a national referendum to include our First Nations peoples in the constitution. Whilst the far-right conservatives have been pushing a false narrative of how it will destroy our democracy, I hope the Australian people do the correct thing and vote YES.
Agree, while substances like alcohol, drugs have reached the Indigenous people, services that aid in human care have not because of neglect and capitalist mindset.
There is a lot to learn and preserve from Indigenous culture and to share “good” services from the modern world. Sadly modern world is itself in a spiral of degradation because of abuse of resources.
Wonderful video thanks to the team DTE😊

While I appreciate your efforts in highlighting the disadvantages faced by overlooked communities, I cannot accept using the term or definition of "Indigenous People" as it stands today. It simply cannot be applied in the context of the Indian population. Who among the 1.3 billion people can you say are "not-indigenous" to this land? There is definitely a major factor of quality of life and access to resources. Political influence is majorly skewed against those communities, I agree. But, we simply cannot call anyone "Indigenous" in India, because we all are. We cannot imbibe WHITE Colonial Guilt for having a rich and diverse history. The terminologies and definitions we have today, i.e. Scheduled Tribes, is as good as it can get. The term "Indigenous people" is such a Western-Colonial-centric term that does not take into consideration the realities of India. And it also brings with it a legacy of malicious oppression and systematic extermination which we simply have never done in India. I accept that we haven't taken care of our Tribal communities as well as we should have, but I refuse to carry a baggage of Sins we haven't committed. The terminologies we use today are good for India. Accepting this foreign term and its definition is either going to dilute the existing rights of the tribal communities, or will be unjust to a lot of people.
Sins we havent committed? Right now all forests are being cleared in MP. What are ypi doig about it? No one cares if you can accept the term or not. Anthropology doesnt care about your opinion. Tribals are indigenous . We are not. SIMPLE.
Celebrating mediocrity.
