- Reverb... on bass... what??!!
That's what I would have said 10 years ago, but honestly, it happens waaaaay more than you think, and it can really enhance the sound of your bass tone if you use it correctly.
In this video I'm hanging out with the awesomely talented Steve Lawson who's going to share some (extra) cool tips and tricks with you... honestly, I'd not heard of either of them (and I've been playing bass for over 20 years) so it's likely you haven't either...
As always, see you in the shed...
Scott :)

Hey Scott, you should team up with the guys of That Pedal Show and do a collaborative show on effects for bass.
I was just going to say that.
Surely Steve Lawson should be the one to team up with That Pedal Show. Great idea btw.
Woah i thought that was Kevin Shields from the thumbnail
also the theme of the video fits with shields very well
same lol
I had ordered this MXR Reverb a couple days before i saw this so I felt good about my choice. When I got it home, it blew me away. Thing is really cool!
How do you do the hpf/bass roll-off thingy? Or does it just do it automatically?
The great Stanley Clarke has been using reverb(s) since the '80s. Check his "Time Exposure" album !
The pedal I like most is the Boss C-3 compression/sustain pedal with the attack knob all the way up
The Caline CP-26 Snake Bite Reverb has a Low Filter Pass that does the same for 1/5 of the price of the MXR, besides being a hell of a great pedal for bass.
Love mine. Get 2 for your IR box output and it'll still be under $100
Steve has talked about a High Pass Filter (or Low Cut) which keeps the low notes dry. I am actually looking for reverb pedals which can do this. I would be thankful for some hints.
"I don't know much about wood, but this is pink ivory, and the rest of it is brown." For. The. Win. Haaahahahahaha. Love it!
"If you're reasonable, and have lines on your frettless..." hahahha. Thanks for that. A good friend of mine once said, "they're all unlined if you don't look."
TWO Ghostbusters references in one video? I'm sold!
Yay!!! Steve Lawson. Had a lesson at his home in London. His hair was all black then 🤓🤓
Great bloke!! We first 'met' on the Musician Player Lowdown Bass forum.
What camera did you use on this?
Good tip on the high-pass reverb thanks
Us poor bassists would use octavers because synth boards are a bit pricey. There should be no reason that any effect shouldn't be considered. Sometimes accidents make great things happen.
Does the color of nail polish one wears affect the tone? 😂
Thought that was Kevin Shields from the video thumbnail and got super excited... bummer.
I own that MXR Reverb pedal for my electric guitar rig. I'll have to try it on my bass. Note, the pedal must have been knocked about to get the close-up. The input cable is partly popped out. Also the mix knob is totally off in the close-up which means the pedal would only pass the dry signal to the output with no reverb effect. That said, Steve is using the Epic reverb mode which gives that lovely cavernous sound.
Steve Comeau the cable is half out because I've got it in stereo mode, so needed to get a mono cable to feed both sides of the input. It's a handy trick!
Oh, also, the mix knob is off because I'm controlling it with the CC pedal - you set the max and min levels with the cc pedal up then down... So the knob isn't doing anything just now :)
You are just full of handy advice. Would never have thought of that hack with a mono cable. Brilliant!
But of course. I forgot about the expression input. (duh...)
When I saw Brain May was in the thumbnail, i just knew i had to come check out this awesome video. Amazing as always
Straps...... !!! I wear my basses like they are bow ties. Apart from the upright ones of course. I have a lot of trouble finding straps that are short enough. In fact, I only have two, and I can't remember where I bought either. Hints or shopping tips please?
Don't wear your electric bass like a bowtie for one hahah losen it up man, hold it slightly upright and have the body rest around your stomach area, you'll be fine ;)
I've been making a good living from playing basses for 25 years. I have no problems with my technique that are related to the length of my strap. I like to have my slapping arm as parallel as possible to the strings.
This was not a technique question, it was a gear question. Thanks for your input though. ;-)
"Read the manual." Greatest bass lesson ever! XD
You KNOW this guy drives a DeLorean!
true
@Steve Lawson - I've had a look at the MXR M300 manual and couldn't see anything on there regarding bass roll off or HP filter, are you using something else to do that?
Didg G yes, I did that on the MOD Devices MOD Duo - a couple of the reverbs in me M300 seem to have it built in as standard - definitely worth trying it out in a shop to see if it works for you!
Brill, thanks for the reply.
“It’s Pink Ivory... and the rest of it is brown” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Chairworks! Awesome studio, we record there too! 👍
Clicked on this video thinking that was Kevin Shields. Still a good video.
i use a dark matter distortion, hartke chrous and a digi flange pedal
had NO IDEA a bass strap could be so....EVEYTHING !!!
Thought it was Kevin Shields in the thumbnail.
I know you had an interview with Juan Aldrete last year, but have you every considered having him to a live-sound based pedals and effect primer as a vide lesson? In other words, how to really harness your pedals for live performance and how to avoid common room-specific pitfalls while doing it so that it doesn't turn into a giant swirling pile of mush? Juan's the master pedal sound crafter, so I'd love to hear what he has to say on the matter.
THAT would be awesome!
@@devinebassLet's pray for Juan's recovery so he can play for us again.
But there's low notes reverb on Velvet Revolver's Slither.
I bet it was hipassed too.
Happy Holidays there Scott. Darn, now I''m in the market for ANOTHER mxr pedal;) Love your channel. Cheers from Alaska.
Aguilar Agro > TLC Compressor > Chorusaurus > Bass Wah > Filter Twin > Vintage Microtubes > Tone Hammer > >>
MXR Bass Fuzz > Vitruvian Ring Mod > Bass Envelope Filter > Bass Chours Deluxe > TC Flashback > MXR Reverb. Volume and Expression Pedal
T- Hawk that's pretty close to the order, well spotted! :)
T- Hawk... The first board you've listed back to front - the Tone Hammer is the first thing after the volume pedal and the bass Wah isn't in sequence with the order of the pedals... Will do a full list somewhere soon (I've changed the order again since making this video :) )
Thanks. Nerd here! Beautiful signature bass by the way. Any link to that? And where do you place your ring mod?
T- Hawk the Ring mod is after the MXR Fuzz octave, before the MXR chorus - ring mod after chorus is less usable than chorus on ring mod!
T- Hawk... The bass is described in detail on the Elrick Basses website - and there are a lot of videos using the fretted and fretless versions on my RUclips channel :)
Thank you.
Pls review the Rouge bass lx200 b
“Tom Morello Watch out” loll
lol ;)
I love your videos man. You’re making me consider picking up bass again! I quit after switching to guitar and I’m considering picking up a Sterling Sub bass, haha. Also this video is great!
I don't know that I'm going to be able to get rid of that spot in my eyes now from that damn Spotlight right between you guys Scott what were you thinking
More videos with guests with pedal tips and tricks
Scott, what is the BEAUTIFUL song at the end? Thanks.
RTFM I love this guy!
Man! Scott’s Bass Lessons is almost 10 years old (right?). You’ve built an amazing brand.
6 years old! :)
What's the studio called?
Damn that dudes jacket is sick
All too familiar with the Dad Bags. LOL
What's up Scott. Is the string action on fretless basses supposed to be high? What's wrong if it can't be lowered?
Christen Morris the action will change the sound a lot - we talk about it in the course...
nice strap !
6:49 and 8:45 pedal?? Help me!!!!
Janek gwizdala also knows a lot about pedals
Amo fuerte muya steve !
super cool mate!!
i had to put sunglasses to watch this video
Sail Ort 👍👍😂😂😎
love this channel!
Bro that kicker light is extreme! Great video though.
cool!!!!
i thought this was Kevin Shields and i was really excited but also confused
Good video but that strap looks bad how wide is that thing. I'm waiting to see Scott actually wearing it doesn't look comfortable.
Nice lesson but now I have a migraine because of the glaring light blinding me. I don't have a migraine in honesty but that glare should be fixed please! I had trouble with the lesson because of it and I have a sensitivity.
Otherwise, keep it up. One last thing, thanks for the way you worded that you were going to see your wife. I usually hear a qualifier, like "my BEAUTIFUL, or LOVELY, and I can't help but think that the speaker left his ugly, or (pick your own phrase) wife somewhere else. I hear people say they met their wife at (fill in the blank). They met the woman who became their wife at whatever place... I have more but enough sarcasm for today. 👍
Awesome video Scott !!! the straps looks really comfortable !!!
1.Use the filter
2.Use the buffer (RTFM)
3.Don't fix it, just do it right.
do you put the bypass filter before or after the reverb?
crickets.
Omg 😱 incredible
Steve Lawson is the sh$#%&^+@ ...I mean, The Man!!!
Hey Scott! What's your opinion on midi pickups like the Roland GK?
I've played a bass with one and it was great. Honestly, I'm a bit of a single effects pedal kinda guy (because I'm a technophobe) but I've heard peeps get great results from the Roland!
Darn, if I knew about those last month or in about 7 days from now I'd grab one... I need to wait on my next pay check and they'll likely be gone by then :(
The straps are second to none. Buy one now!
Those straps are made in Chile and are amazing. A lot of models and great quality.
Check out their site: www.ergo-straps.com
cool
didnt get a notification -.-
Mmm pink and brown
Geddy Lee, is that you?
Spent 1 minute on the main topic in the title. Didn't give many specifics of the pedals themselves. And the answer to the big question "How do we achieve that effect?" is "Read the manual". Thanks, guys...
At least the tip about learning the right notes instead of learning corrections was handy, I guess.
At 1:52 a midlife crisis is holding a bass
So tell us about the kill switch?
EclecticHillbilly it's a kill switch - it mutes the signal for stutter effects and a few other interesting uses... What else would you like to know?
Thanks, I was unaware of that..
5:38. Damn, that chord got my ears instantly triggered and I found that it's the 1st chord of this marvelous song /watch?v=vDUoMTRM1Qk (God is an Astronaut - In the distance fading).
Roll the lows off on all instrument reverb. Not just bass. Abbey Road always did this, -6 dB per octave at 600 Hz. For significant reverb added to a bass, I'd probably go -24. And why would you point an annoying backlight right into the camera lens? That hairdo does not benefit from a backlight.
:)
Helpful vid though I have no idea who this guy is. Not much into this ambient stuff in the US.
Is he a Dr Who?
#NotificationSquad :)
That projector in our faces ! aaaaargh ! i'll tell you anything you want, turn it off !!
:P
I started off skipping through to skip past the fluff and get to the meat. Before I knew it I was at the end of the video and never found the substance.
Yep, garbage channel
the “uhh” habit
Sup early squad
#EarlySQUAD
I would get a strap if I weren't so dirt frickin poor
is he ill? why are his nails discolored? leukemia?
Please please Scott, do not make videos whilst you are driving. This is appallingly dangerous 😡
hey Robbie, don't worry it's an un-public drive... only thing at the end of it is my house, so the only thing I'd drive into is a fence ;)
whats up people
Really? That's your comment?
Holdington sup
Get some new shoes, Those Red mommy clogs are nasty as hell.
Scott, love the work but please stop recording and driving, prima facie evidence of RT offence, god forbid. Ur a role model.
Im sorry but reverb just shouldnt be used on bass.
Way too many effects for my taste, maybe he should ditch the bass and just play a synthesizer. Also, there's no such thing as a low B that doesn't suck.
Oletta Liano I like your way of seeing the 5th string
