Watchmojo putting "Dazed and Confused" on their top 10 basslines list made Led Zeppelin (especially John Paul Jones) look a bit like stupid musicians but they actually weren't. There are so many better basslines John Paul Jones had written such as "Ramble On" and "How Many More Times"...

For me, one of the best bass lines is from Stevie Wonder's 'Sir Duke' It's epic as it just carries the whole song from start to finish. Not many out there that sound quite like this one.

Ian Dury and the Blockheads - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick is the sickest bass line I can think of at the moment. Stranglers - Peaches is also tasty. But number 1 should be Lou Reed - Walk On the Wild Side.

I know it's a simple line, but ... Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" always comes to mind for a solid bass line, and solo.
Because of that line I decided to buy a bass and now I'm learned to play.
The chain is simple and iconic, the end gets slightly harder but is petty basic and repetitive yeah

As a bass player myself, I loved Paul McCartney‘s baseline on Rain, and I loved Chuck Rainey’s baseline on Peg.
Peg is an all-around awesome song.

Let's face it, there are hundreds of excellent bass lines out there, from "I'm a Man" by The Spencer Davis Group to James Jamerson "Ain't no Mountain High Enough" through Yes, Primus, Metallica, and Rush to name a few. What lifts any one of these excellent bass riffs is its context and ability to set the mood or drive the emotion in the song it's being played.
My number 1 bassline might be Stu Hamm's rendition of Moonlight Sonata. Weather Report w/ Jaco is challenging. Victor Wooten from Bela Fleck & the Flecktones is a freak of nature too. I haven't played as much lately, but those used to be my top 3:

As far as radio syndicated music, Tim Commerford from Rage Against The Machine had a lot of cool riffs.

As a diehard Rush fan, I don't feel YYZ is their strongest bassline. There are TONS of underrated songs/basslines, like Marathon man, Vital Signs, The Big Money that have catchy and complex basslines.

John Taylor's bass playing on "Rio" is up there for me.
I'm a Bernard Edwards stan I love that you included "Good Times" in your list. But in my opinion he had even a few better ones than that.
Louis Johnson's bassline for Michael Jackson's "Get on the Floor" is epic as well.
But like you said there are so many very good basslines its really tough to put a top 10 together.

Geddy Lee is one of those bassists that can't be replicated even by the best bass players. The same when the best singers try to replicate Layne Staley from Alice In Chains. Just can't do it.

There's so many baselines in Orion that you can't even pick a best one
Yeah, the second half of Orion has all the difficult stuff in it, and outside of maybe "Anesthesia" you're not going to find a better bass line from Metallica/ Cliff Burton.
My friend of Misery has such a good bassline, so underrated imo

I absolutely love that Davie isn't swayed by only choosing challenging basslines that are likely more stimulating as musician to play but aren't necessarily musically the most enjoyable

I honestly would put Orion to the place of Wrathchild, and it's probably the most technical bass line of Cliff (without counting solos like Anesthesia), and ffs this bassline rocks

Orion's break down in the song is completely epic. Of course, the parts you played are the norm but when Cliff hits the middle section it's one of the most epic sounds and structures ever. Most people don't even realize it's bass. Good vid brother.

@@jduncanandroid This is the thing! I've been listening to those albums for over 30 years and most of the time I didn't realise it was Cliff playing those parts. Never truly realised what an incredible bassist he was. Such a loss.
I recently heard the isolated bass track for Orion, and yeah, that middle section blew me away.

Very late to this obviously but Ron Carter's bass work on Also Sprach Zarathustra is pretty amazing.
Obviously not the level of technical difficulty of some of these but his bass line provides much of the variation over a nine minute instrumental track, and it's all melodic and rhythmic rather than slapping and popping (not criticising players who use these techniques, just noting that Carter was working with a more limited toolkit).

I am kind of in the middle between Michael and Davie; I think that at the beginning, DaC is pretty simple, but then gets pretty fast in the middle and end. However, I think that there are still better Led Zeppelin baselines, such as The Lemon Song and Ramble On, that should have made the so called "list".
Then again, I might be a bit biased, since I am a huge Led Zeppelin fan.😆
