I know what is the hardest when i'm watching your videos
Enough.
🤨
@@Davie504 checkmate
Hmmmm
Pause
Don't forget, Geddy and Les are also singing overtop of their riffs. Definitely adds to the difficulty
"YYZ" is an instrumental.
you should already know that there are no lyrics to yyz
No, it doesn't add to the difficulty of the bass line. It just means they are skilled to be able to play and sing simultaneously. BUT, that doesn't just make the bass part harder.
It makes a hard bass line even harder, though. Mad props to my singing bassists out there. Got to give it up to dudes like Chris Squier who could sing complicated harmonies and play foot pedal organ parts while playing tough bass lines.
@@YippeeSkippie426 that song is wild
Ryan Martinie from mudvayne is incredible. An amazing bassist. I have never seen a bassist get such a work out or use so much of the frett board.
DIG!!!
Agreed. Death blooms is a good complex line. Dig isn’t hard, the speed is the worst part. But death blooms is one that requires work out of me. Of course there are others, Ryan is one of my favorite bassists in general. The dude is crazy versatile
Ryan Martinie was a huge influence on me playing the bass. L.D.5.0. is a masterpiece but it doesn't even stop there. Also, as a bass player, love to Matt McDonough!
I think Victor Wooten is the best...
I still think "Heart of the Sunrise" is a pretty intense bass line, but then you have the chill bass solo after that's so good. "Roundabout" has a good bassline as well, but I feel like Squire's best stuff can be found on "The Fish," or "Tempus Fugit." Of course, he did some incredible work over his career, so there's certainly plenty to pick from.
No Pun intended.
The opening riff to "Panic Attack" is cool but the riff John Myung plays during the solo at 4mins 45 is killer to play at full speed
And Seems Davie didn't manage to play it on full speed
@@aspOLmeR Don't know if makes any diference because I'm not an expert, but 6 string vs 4 string in this case can make some difference
i think the same
I can play the rest of the song but that riff... Nah that kills me every time
@@adolfodias83 it doesn't tho I play on a 4 string and no major difference. the only thing is that you have to play most of the song one octave higher but that's it. also myung doesn't use the high string of that 6 string often
It's so humble of Davie504 to invite such a small bassist like Davide Biale in every one of his videos. You're so cool and kind Davie504
Yeah but you notice how they're never in the same room together? Isn't that weird?
@@nst.pierre9800 Hmmmmm very interesting
They are the same person
@@danielbenjamin7797 What the hell? You couldn't tell we're joking?
@@danielbenjamin7797 what?
Jaco’s playing on Joni Mitchell’s “Cotton Avenue” has always been my favorite “hardest riff”. Especially the line as Jaco opens the song after the “Overture”. Go to the one minute and forty five seconds mark.
Agreed! But: do not go to the mark. Carefully listen from the beginning to gain the full wow- effect. And don't forget to turn your amp to 11.
This album has such a brillant sound. At least the original vinyl.😊
Oh man! Just another epic! Subscribed. Thank you!
The bassline to Hysteria isn't too hard to play... once or twice. But to keep it going the whole time... whoof. There are many Muse basslines that really test your endurance, like New Born. Chris Wolstenholme has incredible stamina.
Same with Higher Ground.
They always choose the easiest ones and put every single one that's super difficult in honorable mentions. Amazing job WatchMojo.
WatchMojo does this only to get more comments, because it helps their rating and brings them more money. Lame!
I've come to believe that WatchMojo is staffed with 18 year olds. They don't shit from shinola about music. They're all under the misconception that Rap and EDM are actualyl music.
It's not their fault. Their brains were dwarft by watching Teletubbies
@@patrickfreeman8257 There are literaly hundreds of EDM subgenres, its not only brostep (more known as dubstep by the people that aren't onto EDM)
WatchMojo has its place in the ecosystem. Creatures will exist to feed on low effort benign view harvesting and inertia of the YT algorithm. At least the narrators have a tinge of ‘I really don’t care what I am saying’ to keep it real.
Most of my watches of them are accidental. Thanks Davie504
@@patrickfreeman8257 I'm below 18 yet I can tell the difference between a bass solo and a bass line
Just stumbled across you channel & digging it. Totally, Jaco is an iconic bassist & ridiculous player. Love your dry deadpan expression & commentary along with your snarky sarcasm.😂. Your playing is nice as well Sub’d 😀👍
Happy to see JPJ getting some love for Immigrant Song! I've always loved the bass line there. Achilles Last Stand is another iconic bass riff from JPJ.
I thought it was mostly gutar doen by Jimmy Page was it no?
You know what? The bad sound and "unplugged" noise from the room makes your playing sound much more "real" rather than the clean line compressed signal you usually have. Great video. Very much agree with your opinion.
* "I think this less compressed tone sounds bad and real."
Victor Wooten not being number 1 is absolutely criminal. I love Les and Geddy as much as the next guy, but, man, Victor is just unreal.
This isn't a list of the greatest bassists nor greatest baselines, just the hardest to play.
@@LandonAPerson you're making it sound like Victors basslines aren't hard to play lol
Victor actually has a bass player! 😆 BTW- Anghony Wellington is a straight up bada$$, himself. I mean, if you are going to placd bass for Victor Wooton...
Victor Wooten never made a hit, though, which was a big criteria
@@Andyyyk47 I mean he won 5 grammies does he really need a hit?
Archspire has a super talented bassist. Love to see your reaction to his play throughs
For me, two of the most difficult basslines to play are "Hit me with your rhythm stick"- Ian Dury & The Blockheads, and "Don Quixote"- Nik Kershaw, though I think the latter was keyboard sampled, it'd be awesome to see someone play it on bass. "Warheads"-Extreme is pretty tough to play, too.
I’m suprised you didnt pick a Rush song cause of ur pfp 😂
@@FACEL1FT Even I can play *most* Rush songs, Geddys' basslines are good but not as difficult as those I mentioned... HMWYRS, for example, is in F, and I have relatively short fingers! 😁
I'm with you. The Blockheads bassist was killer- they all ended up the band for Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Try and play Frankie songs- feel the burn!
Last month I was lucky enough to stand 10 feet away from Chris Wolstenholm playing "Hysteria." He made it look effortless, but I can confirm that it is very difficult!
Teen Town is my number 1. It took me a while to figure it out and learn it back in the day when we only had our ears.
No tabs. No RUclips tutorials.
Just our ears.
Your humor is awesome dude, that last quick omg made laugh aloud in surprise and delight
I don't play base, but I watch these videos because this guy is epic!!! Awesome videos, keeping funky here in New Zealand 😊
the fact that cannibal was listed in this is an absolute surprise. But to be fair, Alex Webster is a fucking beast
Yes, but it's far from the hardest one, or even hard at all. Frantic Disembowelment is one of the hardest lines in death metal...
@@AlexandarShmex Yep, Frantic Disembowelment is easily their most difficult song, HSF is just their most popular, wouldn't expect any less from Watch Mojo.
@@EvilEldrin yeah, but this list was less of an actual list of "hardest bass riffle" that it was "bass riffs that I like". The fact that Victor Wooten only got honorable mention shows the maker of this list knows nothing about the bass.
Webster is amazing
For real, was surprised to see cannibal corpse and dream theater. Since when did people start acknowledging the existence of metal?
As a non-bassist, two that come to the top of my head that seem like simple riffs but I imagine would be hell to play are "A Fan's Mail" by Thundercat and "Tuesday Lover" by Broadcast. They are also both great bass riffs. RIFFS.
Appreciate your replacements in the list. Great breakdown as always. It was a real pleasure slapping a like on this video.
THANK YOU!!!!!! Finally! Someone is talking about the epicness of Roundabout by YES. IMO, it has the most underrated bass riffs in music.
Absolutely awesome seeing a longer video from Davie again
You inviting yourself as a guest was very funny. I really liked seeing it, and it shows where you started. You made me smile today
I completely agree with your opinions. You are spot on! Buon lavoro!
roundabout by yes, wow i love that bass line Davey played, i play bass well i make a noise on it and that groove got me!!!
When I first picked up the bass guitar to start learning I had four Gods. Steve Harris, John Entwistle, Geddy Lee and my number one Chris Squire from yes. Roundabout is the most amazing song and the endurance to make it all the way through from beginning to end is amazing and so are his riffs Rhythm changes just the whole song. I still get worn out after playing the first three and a half minutes LOL.
I mostly use my fingers on bass but I also use a pic once in awhile and slap. Here's one of my songs as an example. Nowhere near the talent on here though.
Front BC by Buzzbomb
Why doesn't anyone pay attention that Davey started posting new videos much more often?
Thank you very much, I am very glad that I can watch you more often
I mean, it's watchmojo, it's shovel ware in video form. It's mass produced, low effort video content that is usually either click bait, or nothing but white noise. It's basically a cannery in youtube channel format.
I still love Heart of the Sunrise, one of my favorite Yes songs, Chris and Bill were so good together.
I'm surprised that Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face made it in this list. Is an epic bassline.
As death metal goes, Death also have some epic basslines and Pull the Plug being has some good basslines.
Jared Smith is an insane bassist. He’s the bassist in the tech death band Archspire
@@radiant_7354 yea he's crazy
I always look to suffocation for an amazing bassist \m/
I would argue, "Is It Luck?" Is harder than "Tommy the Cat" but both are extremely difficult
DMV is like Jerry was a Racecar Driver on steroids
Philippino Ray has got to be up there, even though Les has so many good riffs. Playing that one in particular and singing at the same time is pretty incredible. Slap on Davie 👍
Alex Webster is an amazing metal bass player. One of my favorites. Check him out in a side project called “Blotted Science”. Even if your not a metal or a death metal fan you can’t deny the creativity and the finger speed of Alex Webster. Blotted science is an instrumental band.
Davie you need to check out japanese fusion jazz bass solos, one of the best ones is from domino line by casiopea
@@Me-qp8vz what's the video called i can't find it
The moment I read "fusion jazz bass solos" I instantly you're gonna talk about casiopea. nice taste
Many incredible basslines exist out there. Steve Di Giorgio's fretless bass in the record Individual Thought Patterns of the band Death is just insane. I particularly consider all the bass parts of the song Overactive Imagination to be difficult to follow in full speed.
I'm currently going down the death rabbit hole and my fucking god that entire album.... Death is ALSO so fucking good for insane drummers, I mean ffs they've got 2 albums with gene hoglan?????? Although of the 2 i vastly prefer symbolic
@@daveprice5911 What i like the most in Death is that you could see them evolving from one album to the next, outlining the genius of Chuck Schuldiner. As for the drummer thing, you can also check (if you haven't) Sean Reinert's drumming in Human album. He was only 19 at the time and was playing way ahead of his time. I'm between ITP and Symbolic. The first is more technical and the second is more easy to be heard IMO.
@@user-un3wr9ri4l Yeah Human was next on my list, it's a friend of mines personal favourite death album and in her opinion it shits on the rest of their discog, which of course made me curious, then seeing hoglan himself saying how much inspiration he took from Sean's playing only amplified that.
Before then I have been listening to Strapping young lad's city and my god that's some ear candy
Brilliant as always!
Thanks bro 🤘 I enjoyed all the choices
I’m thinking about two “bass grooves” (and riffs) that I like a lot:
1. Jamiroquai: Paul Turner is a great bass dude, but the main riff in Runaway it’s completely CRAZY. It’d be nice to hear your “version” of this bass masterpiece
2. Mohini Dey: I don’t know if it’s properly a song, but the first thing she played at SIT BOOTH at NAMM in 2019, to me, still remains a crazy and top bass moments, ever. The “theme” is such a perfect fusion of groove, musical taste and “variations”.
In this case, too….it’be nice to have “your version” of this masterpiece.
Hope you like em!
Cheers
Holy sh!t is Paul Turner a funk-master! WOW!
Jamiroquai is LEGENDARY
I would be blown away seeing Davie504 doing a Matt Freeman solo, that guy is a machine!
Yes bro! I’m my opinion I would say that Freeman might be the greatest pick bass player of all time. Definitely the best in punk.

I would love to see your list for the top 10 bass solos or songs with bass solos from Band-Maid. We all have our favorites, but it would be great to see what you think.
I’m not a bassist, but “Cupid’s Dead” by Extreme is pretty interesting bit of bass. The section where the bass doubles Nuno’s guitar is EPIC!!!
Clay Gober’s riff in the song “Real” by Unprocessed” is pretty amazing. His pick/slap/hybrid technique is so damn good (and not easy). His riffs in GOAT and ABC could also be up there.
the audacity
Here are Ten Rush Basslines:
10. The Enemy Within
9. Driven
8. Early Distant Warning
7. Leave that thing alone
6. Malignant Narrcissism
5. Natural Science
4. La Villa Strangiato
3. Anthem
2. Wheres my Thing?
1. Cygnus X-1: The Voyage
As a fellow Rush fan, your list is full of variety and I think it's great. I'd add Headlong Flight as #10, personally.
Also, have you ever thought that the Driven Bassline sounds quite similar to the Panic Attack Bassline?
Turbo like for Distant Early Warning but YYZ tho
@@myselph1761 There are way to much good Rush Riffs to put them in a Top 50 :D
Also now that you mention it, they are somehow similar
The solo jam in Freewill!!
Usted hace ver fácil lo difícil. Admiro mucho sus capacidades. 🙂
You're good, man. Personallly I still struggle with the riff from "Big Bottom" by Spinal Tap. Ah, I'll get there someday.
I know Davie is good but damn, that Davide Biali really was on a completely different level.
I'm sure you'll one day surpass him Davie!
Exactly
7:26 your immediate response made it perfect xD
I agree, Hysteria could've easily been top 9 or 8, probably.
I’d like to see a little bit more of your skills because I think they’re awesome, thanks bro
Royal Blood has some great ones. The bridge/breakdown riff on Lights Out is a peach!
There have been some amazing difficult bass riffs coming from recent bands. Not sure if you're into metal but if you are check out Archspire, the bassist in that band is absolutely unreal
Some bands I never heard mentioned on best basslines:
Atheist (->Mother MAn)
Cynic (->Veil of Maya)
Spiral Architect (->Spinning Bass)
Watchtower (->Control and Resistance)
Mekong Delta (-> Transggressor)
Gordian Knot (-> Rivers Dancing)
Beyond Creation (->Omnipresent Perception)
Obscura (->Anticosmic Overload)
Vektor (->Tetrastructural Minds)
Origin - Saligia is a good one
Love your videos. Amazing skills, good content and your deadpan humor is masterful! I don’t even play bass and I’m gonna watch all your vids & subscribe.
I wouldn’t have watched their video past the first song. I watched all of yours. Liked and sub.
Epic old school style Davie504 video! Thanks!
Dude there is this bass riff in Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden which is so god damn cool. It's like a few bars before when the interlude hits. Man I would love to hear you do a whole video on Steve Harris. He really is super awesome if you really look into his style!
agreed. iron maiden songs are so fun to play on bass! mainly the ones in the powerslave album
Nobody gallops like Harris!!
My own person top 4 ( i call them the 4 basslines of my apocalypse) are: 1. Jerry Was Racecar Driver 2. Hysteria 3. Roundabout 4. Immigrant Song. Honorable mention for Young Lust - Pink Floyd because I tried learning it and half way through found out there is an incredibly difficult piece of it making it almost impossible for me to learn currently.
As a amatuer bass player, these are so fantastic...TY Davie!
There's a couple of _epic_ bass riffs on the recent Porcupine Tree album 'Closure / Continuation'. 'Harridan' for starters. And that's in 5/4. And the melodic bassline that appears twice in 'Chimera's Wreck'.
Porcupine Tree and even his solo work (Raven), often have great bass work, I saw them last year in Chicago, got the new album of course.
"Hyperactive" by Thomas Dolby - the recorded version is a programmed bass sample, but it WAS actually performed live by Thomas Dolby's touring bass player, Terry Jackson, on the "Aliens Ate My Buick" tour!
I saw that tour! ❤
same exact situation with Susudio by Phil Collins... and Leland Sklar playing it live!
@@tanner_uncut Wow, I did not know that! I always thought that was a VERY intense bass part - that explains it!
@@RaymondPeckIII That's wild! It was a GREAT show - and Dolby's live band was amazing!
Dave you're killing it with your string buzz ;-)
Claypool is an animal. I got to see him play live a few months ago and it was awesome
Re: #9: Sounds a bit similar to the bass riff in "Another One Bites the Dust." I have to say it's the dollar store version of that one. One I always thought was a bit difficult but due to its obscurity nobody really mentions was the Kajagoogoo song "Frayo."
It gets lost in their pop song hits, but Mark White of the Spin Doctors is a fav to listen to. I really like Shinbone Alley (the groove is awesome) and Sweet Widow (the bass solo in it.) Mark and the drummer Aaron Comess really groove.
Haha these are so great! And I immediately thought "wtf where's Tommy the Cat??" Les plays it so effortlessly too.
Really fun video to watch!
Rancid's Matt Freeman is a criminally underrated base player, though they are mostly solos. Just glad they got a mention.
i want davie to slap maxwell murder that would be sick
@@macco4607 Loved the idea
I have always liked the riff from "Hero" by Kiyoshi. I´m not a bassist, so I don´t know difficult it is, but it sounds way hardest than several of the riffs on that WM list.
Just found this guy. Luv tha video
Hey! I’m a TBone player and I just recently started watching your videos, so I haven’t seen all of your videos from the past (your playing is awesome by the way). So, have you played any of Duran Duran’s bass lines, specifically “Rio”?
something from Mudvayne should have made this list. Dig is a very good example, but definitely not because of the brbr deng thing. the verses are pure crazy. also Death Blooms. Ryan Martinie is a legend
death blooms is a great song on bass, it was fairly quick to learn but the broken power chords on loose strings are tedious as hell
DIG!!!
Some of the hardest bass lines I've ever tried to figure out came from Tool- especially their most recent stuff. The Pot was particularly difficult for me. That said- I haven't even tried anything off Fear Inno. yet so- I assume it's even more difficult because Justin seems to have been finding his footing and I would say on 10,000 Days he really started to shine but you could tell he was evolving quickly- becoming even better.
I’m seconding this one! Lots of their others too.
I covered it on RUclips, it's so fun to play though
@@KaedaN1428 Isn't it though- I love playing it, it's very satisfying.
Justin had been in the band for a decade by 10,000 days, I don't really understand what you're getting at. But good on you for learning to play
Maybe hard, but not really that great of a groove
Domino line is my go to bass groove. You rock Davie
Don't know if it's the hardest, but "The Real Me" by John Entwistle on Quadrophenia was pretty epic. One of my favorites was Geezer Butler's intro to Black Sabbath's NIB. Just pentatonic scale, but cool
Bill ward was the drummer!
@@ryandonaghy8613 I meant Geezer. Even seen them twice.
One of the best bassists I know, or at least cuz nostalgia from my teenager days, is L'Arc~en~Ciel's Tetsu. Japanese J-Pop basist with a lot of dope riffs, solos and licks.
Try: Blurry Eyes, New World, Driver's High, Daybreak's Bell, Honey and Spirit Dreams Inside as recommendations.
The fact that they included bass riffs with *pick* was very ILLEGAL
maybe that's why they are the hardest. Because you have to go and buy the pick
Roundabout use pick
Hey Davie, I'd love to see you playing a top X basslines from Louis Johnson (although all of them would probably stay at the top 1 place as most epic)
Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse has a lot of insane bass lines, he is basically the quintessential extreme metal bass player, one of his riffs I like a lot is the intro riff from the song Mutation Of The Cadaver, check it out.
I love the bass lines played by Sting, the vocalist of the band The Police. The bass lines he plays are not flamboyant, but they give me a sense of functional beauty. DavideさんがThe Policeの楽曲のベースを弾いてるところ見てみたいな~
Why didn't you write that you want to see him play it in English ! Can Davie read Japanese?
@Thanks for your suggestion⸜( ´ ꒳ ` )⸝♡︎
I'd love to see Davie playing bass on The Police's songs!!
@@HirasawaCover I'm sorry if it came out as a bit aggressive by the way, it wasn't meant to be. I was just wondering if he could read Japanese, as I'm trying to learn myself and for a European it's quite hard!
@ No problem. Learning Japanese can certainly be difficult for Europeans, especially in the beginning. It may even be as difficult as learning Basque!
"Jerry was a Race Car Driver" is a tribute to "Elephant Talk" by King Crimson. Almost the same mnusic.
Don't know about hard, but epic
The last movement from Fleetwood Mac's The Chain.
As soon as John starts in, you know you're being built up to something.
Leggenda 😂 adoro i tuoi video ❤
Sam Wilkes needs to be more well known. Maybe some know who Louis Cole is, but his group Knower with Sam on bass in the Live Band Sesh version of "Overtime" deserves intense analysis from any bassist.
If it's the hardest I don't know... But, the riff of the song
Raison D'être by Nightmare
impresses me a lot.
OMG. Recently discovered your channel. Bought your album because I like. BASS.
Also, would like to see your take on Benjamin Orr from The Cars and Steve Wright from Greg Kihn Band. Two very melodic, not slap, bass players neither can become slap bass players, because they are not alive. Otherwise could become very good slap, bass players I’m sure. Honorable mention goes to Rutger Gunnarsson noted for his contributions to Abba. Seems bass players can write music and play bass. Amazing.
Stay funky ☮️
Well, I'm not sure if they are top 10 hardest, but they are delicious to hear and sounds elaborated. I'm talking about the bass riffs from the Smiths.
love you Davie.
By hearing these names of bands and songs, I realized what a big rock fan Araki is. EPIC
"A Certain Shade of Green" by Incubus has some really wild bass stuff in it.
And almost anything Evan Brewer has ever written is harder than most of this list.
Underrated bass solo that has a song written around it lol. Dirk Lance was such a great player!
Steve Di Gorggio's basslines in Overactive Imagination (Death). I know it's similar to it's guitar's, but stil an amazing song!
damn, haven't watched slap/like for a couple years. great to see he's still a hard bastard about bass. dude's cool.
When you factor in that fact that he's the lead singer while playing this riff over and over, "Lessons in Love" by Level 42 has to be on the list. Mark King rules.
That is true. Singing while playing the bass really is something.
And the song is 4 minutes long. Oh my!
Under-rated player.
Dune Tune is a proper bass piece.
If I'm being honest I had quite the difficult time when I tried to learn "Knights of Cydonia" by Muse
Hahahhhhh I love how you keep your facial expression and tone the same throughout the entire video, like you're really annoyed by these picks. I think it's hella funny, lol. Subscribed.
I'm a guitarist/trumpetist. I recently bough an acoustic BASS and i'm, right now, at the "blink-182 carousel" level of playing. I did learn like the angel from Rise Against. But i'm slowly moving to redemptions of strings 😂
Primus DMV plays 2 bass lines 1 bass guitar
How would you rate the difficulty of Too Shy by Kajagoogoo? That to me was a whatever catchy 80's song iv heard and not paid much attention to before, but once somebody told me that there is a killer bass riff in that I listen to it in a whole different way. Now its on my play list and if you pump the bass up its a killer banger!
Pdbass
Nick Beggs is a monster. I loved his playing on that album, but lost track of him until I saw him playing bass for John Paul Jones (Zep) in 1995 opening for King Crimson.
Recently he's been in Steve Wilson (Porcupine Tree)'s band. Seems like a real sweetheart, too.
I mean I agree that at least one deceptive bass line seemingly easy to play regarding the technique but hard with the pocket had to make the top ten, because yes when it comes to groove the pocket is not the same that in other genres, but the one they chose is definitely not the most representative of them (I'd have put the Animal Spirits one from Vulfpeck for instance)
For me, I would look into metal for hardest (Tool, maybe ? Meshuggah for the hard rythm to follow). But I really love Muse basslines, especially Liquid State.
