Great version written by Leo himself and Three Dog Night had a huge hit with it in the summer of 1974. Who knew that Leo could rock a clown suit and a couple years before "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" and we see the real Leo with the curly hair and all. It'll be a few years before we see him performing "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" and "When I Need You" on TMS though. While I was looking on You Tube he was on TMS again in 1977 performing "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" and "When I Need You" and I believe "More Than I Can Say" which was his latest hit at the time in 1980.
“Living In a Fantasy”, the title track from the same album as “More Than I Can Say”, was released after. The record was splendidly produced by Alan Tarney from The Tarney Spencer Band (“No Time to Lose”).
I feel the same way. The song blew me away and then I found out it was Leo Sayer!! I was stunned! I never realized it was that great of a talent! Forever a fan!
I had the pleasure of seeing Leo Sayer live a few years ago in a 70s revival tour. He did an hour long set with all the hits and he was absolutely brilliant. David Cassidy was the headliner and Leo blew him off stage.
LEO SAYER IS SUCH A PART OF MY YOUTH. THIS SONG BURNS IN MY HEART. IT WILL BE ONE OF MY FUNERAL SONGS. LEO IS A MUSICAL GENIUS. DID YOU SEE HIM PERFORM THIS WITH THE MUPPETS? WOW. I LOVE THIS MAN.
Let me translate at 1:26. “Dang. This is a boring crowd tonight. Maybe it’s because they’re trying to stay up at midnight. But whatever. I forgot the lyrics here so I’ll just wing it. No one’ll ever know there are supposed to be lyrics here anyways.”
It's called scat singing and he does it (did it) every time he performed this song. I will say though by the time he got to the Midnight Special he kind of looked like the character he wrote about in the song. Maybe too much pressure, indulgences, etc (all that 70s stuff) but he really looked exhausted during this rendition. Still brilliant regardless.
you know an artist has been let down by his label when his live performance of this song were much better than the recorded version on the album...........but then again at least he got label support...........
Leo Sayer made wearing a clown suit cool before Bowie. Imagine if Sayer had been invited to appear in Bowie’s Ashes To Ashes vid. When the old guy got in the way of filming and he was asked “ Do you know who they are? “ he could have replied “yeah! they are just TWO c***s in a clown suit”😂
Is he coming down from something? The other version from TMS with the puppet has so much more energy. Maybe they had him do an encore & he wasn't into it.
Leo did it well, but Chuck Negron and Three Dog Night made this song REALLY famous! Chuck was something else and an otherworldly singer. One of the best singers in the history of the world.
TDN no where near the originality and performance art that Leo's version has. Plus they changed the lyrics (and entire meaning) of the song in the last verse to I must let the show go on which pretty much destroys the entire theme of the original song. Leo was not happy about that either.
You have to have plenty of reasons and also valid ones to say that about a similar artist like Leo Sayer, your comment seems incoherent to me, if you don't like it, just say it but don't gratuitously insult the artist

Just rediscovered this gem. This song strikes a chord with me. It did in 74 and now is 2024...
I feel the same way. The song blew me away and then I found out it was Leo Sayer!! I was stunned! I never realized it was that great of a talent! Forever a fan!
only in the 70,s one of the best live singers ever" take a bow sir" sadly never to be repeated
Live performances without autotune. Those were the days.
So much more sincere and genuine back then
A simpler time
The 70’s were great for music. And live vocals!!
A fantastic singer and songwriter!
He used to tour with Roxy Music when he was getting started. How cool would of that been to be at one of those shows. 🤯🤯🤯

Such great vocal versatility. He sang some great songs!

A real voice and talent without autotune.. hats off to Leo..
I saw him sing this in another video and he is singing it different!
the scat singing is all ways diff when he dose it
I remember watching this the night it aired, I only knew of Leo from the credits on my Daltry album. Still like listening to his music.
I remember watching that on The Midnight Special. Then I went out & got his 2 albums "Silverbird" & "Just A Boy".
Brilliant!
This just sent me back … unreal ❤
I've seen several of his live renditions of this songb and all are unique and well executed.
Me too I'm on my reunion tour with my music of 60 years and I never have leave my living room. Isn't life grand sometimes.
#Wowza! Never knew Leo wrote and sang this song!?🤔 Sooo freaking Different than when I think of his usual style of music!!😜
Became so beloved in Australia, he lives here
Yes, we know you folk have no taste but thanks for the reminder
Superb Sir
3 Dog Night did a cover of this song.
I like this!!! 🎉❤❤ thank you, Leo ♌️
I never realized how good he was or is.
In other videos he showed more enthusiasm and joy when he sang. He seems dejected and sad in this version.
Bravo! Thanks for sharing.
Awesome! Thank you Mr. Sugarman!
I had no idea this was his song.😊
Wow! 🎭
Leo looks tired in this one. There is another video of this song where he shows his range. He is a phenom.
I must let the show go on!!
At a concert of Leo Sayer in Sydney, I seriously damaged my hearing in my left ear. And my concert history includes Led Zepp, amongst others
🎉fantástico

😂
The nonsense lyrics are part of the song.

It’s part of the song amigo. It’s in all versions of it.
I remember this episode. I was about 8 years old and wondered why he wore the costume.
Same here. I remember this in the 70s.
Genius

Puddles pity party should cover this.
I don’t think there is anyone musically you could compare Leo Sayer to.
Is he coming down from something? The other version from TMS with the puppet has so much more energy. Maybe they had him do an encore & he wasn't into it.
🌐✌️💚🖖👽🤟😘
If I ever met Leo Sayer I’d say to him, “Oh Leo, you’re such a clown.” And he’d say, “Why thank you. And that’s Mr. Sayer to you.”
Leo did it well, but Chuck Negron and Three Dog Night made this song REALLY famous! Chuck was something else and an otherworldly singer. One of the best singers in the history of the world.
Not in the UK.
Your kidding right that over orchestrated crap 3 dog put out doesn't hold up sorry this sounds fresh 50 years later
Leo's is the best version
The Original from the composer Leo himself in all its Live Glory before the days of Auto Tune and lip sinking
I didn't know he was a Glam Rocker ??
Does everyone else feel this way?
Three Dog Night version is the only one that should exist. Wore that 45 out when I was a kid.
It wouldn't exist if it wasn't for this man. You should thank Leo for Three Dog Night version

Leo is 10x better than 3 frog stolen night
Mmmm ok. No.
A flawed but still a fantastic performance.
No
@@Gloth_Sang Yes.
What flaws it's live and original amazing
Leo Sayer sucked.
That's a weird thing to say. Why say it?
@@OttoByOgraffey Because he sucked.

cubs suck....not an opinion, fact
@@jonhowe2960 Well that’s not a shock. At least 2016 will always be a good memory… unlike this memory of Leo.
Awful!
Love it
Damn didn’t know this was his song. Always loved it by tdn
