    Your videos are really helpful, straight to the point, and that's what I appreciates about them. BUT... for just once I would really like to see a true to life video of working on a car that's rusted and weathered, with screws that strip, ball joints that will only come out with the heat of hel and hammer of thor, and spindles that take a little more persuasion than a polite suggestive tap.

    For anyone getting ready to do this job: GET A BALL JOINT SEPARATOR. I whacked on my arm with a big 4lb hammer and the ball joint threads and it didn't move an inch. The pickle fork will fuck the boot up if you plan on reusing the ball joint. I used a separator from Harbor Freight and it popped that joint out from the arm like a popcorn kernel in an air popper. Like, it literally popped the whole spindle out about 3 inches in the air.

    Depending on the vehicle age and road condition: i) the abs sensor may be stuck and have to be snapped off and drilled out! ii) The snap ring could be a chore if it is rusted in there badly, plan for time waiting for penetrating oil to soak in! iii) The splash guards may be too far gone and need replacing and you may have trouble with the screws that hold the original splash guard in place!

I'll try that next after hours of giving up using the screw type ball joint separator which is a PITA and doesn't work.

    Were the lower control arms and lower ball joints replaced before they realized it was a bad wheel bearing?

  • @rainprize
    @rainprize 3 месяца назад

    Loosening the axle nut in this fashion is a bad idea - (Using a pry bar in between the wheel lug studs) - you risk bending the studs. Yes it can be done. I've bent mine following this exact video on my civic. My axle nut was extremely tough to remove. Do not tell your viewers to loosen the axle nut this way without first letting them know if the nut is difficult its advisable to re install the rim/ wheel and use leverage by placing the tire back against the ground somewhat - or else use the prybar in between the empty spaces in the rim and your undercarriage subframe.
    Why dont you want to bend your wheel studs? Well; the slight bends will throw off how your caliper and wheel set against the hub assembly and create an ever so slight wobble that ends up being felt at highway speeds, and will - pretty quickly - warp your rotors. I know, I've warped 3 sets of rotors before I figured out following this video was my issue.

    Great video but, one very, very important detail you folks are leaving out - the front bearing has to be properly oriented in order for the wheel speed sensor to work properly. IMO.... Really, really bad idea to leave the rotor on the wheel hub, if a novis (like me) is performing this task, wouldn't you suggest the rotor be removed? I mean its three small phillips head screws that could prevent a lot of damage? What is the logic in leaving it on? I'm not a certified mechanic, I don't know what you know - so please fill us in? I have been (in the past) taking the rotor off - it's a given - these screws can be wayyyyyyyy stubborn, but they 'will' come out. I'm doing this job,,,,,again,,,,,,tomorrow...Please add anything you can to help me understand why and maybe add some detail on the orientation of the bearing being replaced... My car is a 2007 Honda Civic....Help if you can?.............I know this is an old video --- but I had to at least try for a comment....

    If the ball joint is not worn in anyway, does it need to be replaced when installing a hub and bearing? I mean I understand that the castle nut needs to be replaced, but what about the ball joint itself because mine is not damaged.

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  6 лет назад +2

      +Joel Armistead If the ball joints are fine you can reuse them, but if they are original to the vehicle and the vehicle has over 100,000 miles on it, you may want to think about replacing them while you already have them out. Here is a link to the replacement ball joints that we carry on our website. Hope this helps you out goo.gl/b4ngjF

    • @defaultuser000
      @defaultuser000 6 лет назад

      If the ball joint is still good, and as long as you didn't damage it when popping it out of the lower a-arm, there is no need to replace it. The castle nut shouldn't need replacing either. The castle nut is captured in place via a cotter pin, as shown at 2:45. The cotter pin should be replaced, but the nut can be reused if you are reusing the old ball joint. If you hammered on it to the point where the nut is damaged, then you should probably replace the entire ball joint, the replacement ball joint comes with a new nut. As A1 Auto said here though, if they are factory and/or have high mileage on them, you might as well replace them while you have it all apart because it's just a matter of time until they will need to be swapped out.

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  2 года назад

      +Supernova Thanks for watching! The dust shield is just held in by screws so you just need to remove them and pull it off. If it is really rusted you might have to use a lot of penetrating oil or even heat to separate it from the knuckle. This are thin pieces of metal so it is no uncommon for them to not be reusable if removed.

    My buddy just bought a 2005 Civic and we went to replace the rotors. When we took the wheels off we noticed the calipers are on the front of the rotors. The previous owner had the wheel bearings replaced. Is it possible to put the hubs on the wrong side of the car? I’m pretty sure that’s what happened but I’m not an expert. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

      1A Auto Parts i believe the Hubs are on the wrong side. Is it possible that they took both hubs off, replaced the bearings and then put the hubs back on the wrong sides?

      I think i mis spoke. I think they put the spindles on the wrong sides

      That would put the calipers on opposite sides from normal, but as for whether or not the knuckles can be bolted to opposite sides, I don't know.

    Why doesn’t anyone sell the knuckle-bearing-hub as one assembly so people don’t have to bother with pressing bearings in and out?

    Do I have to torque it to a specific setting or will anything do. And how do I tell which side is the ABS sensor

    • @ly-yx1rk

      The and sensor side of the bearing will be magnetic.
      The only thing that needs to be torqued accurately is the axil nut

    and guess what (something no one ever mentions) . If the bearings, breaks, calipers,, etc are bad on one side, the ones on the other side should be replaced too, Don't be cheap, it could cost you later

      Not always. Hondas are notorious for having the front drivers side bearing going out. They go out from 20,000 to 80,000. Few make it past 80,000. I've no idea why it's just the front drivers side wheel bearing.
