Really interesting to find out, there's certain amps that don't suit certain pickups/ guitars 🎸 . Great demonstration 👍
Great review mate, I’m going to get 612 today after comparing it against Fender almost twice the price yesterday. What ever Yamaha makes it makes it very well. We have Yamaha grand piano, two Yamaha cinema amps, 2 Yamaha acoustic guitars and here it comes: 612
Yamaha should officially rename that color "dope as f*ck". Animals at the end :)
Love to see Yamaha getting there props! My mother gave me a Yamaha when I was 9... I'll be 43 next month, Still have the old girl and she plays like the day I got her! Thanks for the great video and review bro!............... Mike (Ipswich River Guitars).
I like the color on that blue that looks like green 🙄. But the 599 one with the p90s and the brush aluminum tail piece is a killer rock guitar.👍
I had a Yamaha R1. Boy, was that a bad ass... Oh, wait, wrong channel!
Now for real, I have the unique Yamaha RGX A1, turned into a baritone, and it's also a bad ass guitar. : )
The Strat clone Pacifica of the 90's was an incredible guitar at an entry level price tag. I was in a punk band back then, and my guitarist had one with a Carvin halfstack and it was killer! I had a G&L bass with a Peavey amp and cab. We rocked. He put a SD mini Humbucker in it, and it was incredible. I love Yamaha!
Yes, Pacifica is better.
I am always confused when people say "it is good, especially for that price point". What does that mean now? Is it good or not? If Gibson would build exactly THIS guitar in the USA it would cost 3000 Dollars. Would this guitar then be better because more expensive? What makes a 3000 dollar guitar "better"? Why the hell is it "better"? Does it sound better? Are the materials "better"? What? WTF???
There are 3 things that make the guitar better:
1- The quality of the wood & finish (especially the neck)
2- The quality of the parts/pickups/electronics/bridge
3- Above all, the quality of the labour put into it (precision of the binding, Fret sanding, buzz adjustments, how well the wiring is soldered, etc...)
Since there are many factors & components in the equation, it adds up quickly... but that doesn't mean the bigger "brand names" do not inflate their price, which is the point @@UCrPHxHPnSvHzNNYbJlYoyGQ was making ;-) Revstars are a good band for your buck.
If Gibson built this exact same guitar for more money, then it would obviously be worse, because the increased price point would not reflect a rise in quality.
How is that not clear to you?
@@sebastianlacroix5871 it would be just as good. More expensive, less bang for your buck, but just as good. Price affects how good a deal something is. Not how good it is.
I have the one with the tailpiece and p90’s and the quality is fantastic and the p90s sound better or just as good as Lollars or Duncan’s. The only change I will make is to put a new not on it.
I tried one because of this video. Loved it. Didn’t buy it because they didn’t have the finish I prefer. Liked it more than another guitar I tried that is $2300. Same specs 24 3/4 scale, dual humbucker etc. I have two on order. Thanks for the video.
How's the experience?
@@jeeeeev I bought one just like the one in the video. Great guitar. Comfortable, great neck and well made. The stock pickups sound so good that I don’t feel the need to replace them. I’m going to get the P90 pickup version next.
@@ralphbenitez4407 have you had any experiences with different brands like G or F? I want to compare it with those but it is not available locally from where I am for me to try it out for myself.
@@jeeeeev I own several Fender Strats and a Telecaster. I’ve owned a couple of Gibson SGs and two Les Pauls in the past. I sold them because I didn’t like them. They sounded great but I didn’t find them comfortable to me. I wanted a
Dual Humbucker guitar and this Yamaha is a freat alternative.
Video for the rest of the Revstar?:
RSP20CR (made in Japan, graph tech Tusq nut and copper pickguard with Hardshell Case ), RS720B ( filtertron humbucker), RS620 (alnico 5 humbucker and satin finish) and RS420 ( Nato and maple top and alnico5 humbucker).
The nut material is urea in all models except the RSP20CR.
Pacifica models with urea nut: 012, 112, 120 and 212.
Pacifica models with Graph Tech Tusq nut: 311, 502, 510, 611 and 612.
Video for PAC 510 and 612?
These are beautiful. Yamaha really doing their own thing but still a classic vibe and style. I like the headstock style - would fit on a Danelectro. Out of this Yamaha line you have run through I'm gravitating to the p90's they have built.
Thank you for doing 42 Gear Street Henning. I know you shy away from taking credit for things you do for others. Truly great people are ones that will do things for others without expecting anything in return. Thanks for being that kind of person and a bright spot in the guitar online community. Wishing you much continued success. God bless and rock on brother 👏🎸😎
That teal finish with the gloss racing stripes... That lovely "brushed steel" paint finish! So simple yet so glorious. Everyone else is doing more flamey/quilty/exotic tops...Yamaha pulls this one out of it's sleeve and makes them all look like kicking, squealing gucci Lil's piggies! (random radiohead reference. Why? Idk! ...)
revstar !!! i want the blue one with strips and copper pickguard , it s my dream guitar !!!
Nice review! I have the 820 and it's an amazing instrument, especially at that price point.
Better than the PR S2 product line?
@@richmanfilms I'd say direct competitor to the S2 line. Both are amazing.
First off, I appreciate and enjoy your videos. Your ability and demonstration of how one guitar can sound so different through your amp stack is quite impressive. I would venture to say most of us do not or cannot afford your level of amplification. Personally, I would rather see you demonstrating sub 1k guitars on of like combo amplifiers and or heads and cabs in a similar price range. That would impress me and might just let myself and others know what one may expect.
I own a Yamaha AES620, and it is my prize possession. It is insanely well made and sounds super warm. It was less than 500.00 new.
The dry switch is a bass cut filter dude!
talk about prepared ;)
@@adicide9070 Haha! 2nd vid he missed!
Bass cut filter? Is that similar to the Reverend Guitars bass contour circuit? On my Reverend it sort of rolls off the low end to make the P90s sound more like a single coil.
@@alexbreyer6921 Yep, basically the same principle, but yours is variable, the Revstar's is not! It's either in or it's out!
@@alexbreyer6921 something like that
I have the 502T and now looking at the Mkll Revstar Standards.. They gone done it again at Yamaha..👍🇦🇺
12:10 "the lick"
Over the last month I've been reading about these guitars and just a few days ago I decided to go check out my local music store and out of the 6 electric guitars they have one of them was a revstar. I love these guitars they're so cool
Wish I could get a 702b without the Bigsby.
You can, it’s called 502/502T
My thoughts exactly on both comments. Too bad I can't actually buy one anywhere because they're all out of stock or don't carry the 502. Particularly not in green. (Too many of my guitars are black.) The satin nickel P90 covers also look awesome with the rest of the hardware.
you missed the Rev620 to review
His tone knob HAS to be down throughout this whole DopeAss Blue guitar segment. Nothing else could explain that tone.. No bridge humbucker on the planet sounds that rolled off.. I’ve been eyeing RevStars for months now, seen plenty of other vids and never did it sound remotely that dark.
Thanks for clearly showing the carved contours. Those don't really come across in photos and most videos don't even mention them.
I love the shape of these Yamaha's
I was never much of a double-cut fan... but a Revstar I would have yesterday already! They look killer (Yamaha drew inspiration from custom motorcycles - WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE?), feel great and sound fantastic.
Revstar are pretty amazing. Having owned 720b and 620BB, I have to point out some weak points too:
- Both my revstar had a dead spot on the G string, 12th fret. Fretwork was flawless, something canceled those frequencies (truss rod perhaps)?
- Nuts had channels cut too deep, causing needless lareral friction (fixed via black tusq)
- String routing over the nut to the machine head posts suffers from gibsonitis: diagonal run causes some lateral friction, not ideal.
- 720b has the bigsby installed too close to the Tom Bridge, causing excesive stiff feel for some tastes and definitely hurting tuning stability, since bridge saddles are cut too deep as well, thus the strings can hang;
- 620 had the wrap around too tall overall, not allowing for really low action, since it would not go low enough; the Korean alchemy wrap around has notches for gauge 10+ strings, with a 9-46 set the thin e and b would move in the saddles when bending, not cool;
- 720b weighed 4.4 kilos, quite heavy I'd reckon; 620 was a mere 3.4 kilos; quite some variation, I assume bigsby+locking tuners+heavier maple cap top + brass tron pickup baseplate are to blame
- tuners good but not great, improper stagger too
- 620 has an unusably dark voice with its neck humbucker; the bridge pup is pure dope however
That said, I feel the best option is the 820, which grants some extra snap and better note separation via the tone pros avt ii bridge.
If you want a actual good Yamaha guitar, the Pacifica 611 or 612 are better for the money than Revstar.
@@raudoyveloz Managed to trade the 720b (which had an amazing finish and textured fretboard, by the way) and got a 1994 UK made Levinson Blade California Custom. It is an amazing, versatile and quite soulful guitar, no regrets. Also, mind-blowing workmanship and a finish that's drop dead gorgeous.
Otherwise I would have looked to grab a used Pacifica US or the 8xx series Taiwan made perhaps.
@@andreil1234 Very good choice, I like Blade and Pacifica USA2
ruclips.net/video/KDHwSOUWY1g/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/zXiZ23rq_ko/видео.html
@@raudoyveloz yep, unfortunately the USA Pacifica is usually quite expensive and hard to find. Taiwan or Japan made higher end rgx is usually a much better deal.
I really want one of those! Just lacking funds.
I debated between a Yamaha Revstar and a Reverend Sensei for a long time and wound up going with the Reverend because of the ebony fretboard. I have no regrets.
I have both the Revstar 820 and a Reverend Sensei. I like both, except the Revstar pickups sound a little muddy. I might consider swapping the pickups out.
I was keen on the Sensei as well until I played one. They look awesome and have some nice features - but I just didn't love the feel of the ones I tried (that's not to say they weren't nice). The Revstar I tried just felt more like home to me, so I'm definitely going for the Teal RS820. It's all down to personal preference at the end of the day though. Enjoy your new Sensei :)
The DAF + the Synergy was an outstanding combination. Great sound.
Excellent video as always! The black one with soap bars is sweet feet! I’d want it with nitro then it would be the stuff indeed. But, ya quality gear for sure. Yamaha anything is always quality. I have had two drum sets by the Y. Lower models but good tones and quality builds.
Big fan of the P90 pickups in the Revstar in the 502T or the 702B.
I really enjoyed the cycling between different amps. It goes to show that amp and settings have more effect on tone than guitar and pickup types. The exception being that for really clean tones, you need single coils.
nice video, thank you...very helpful......seem like they are really are a best bang for the buck guitar..
The finish on the more expensive Revstars is hand-brushed with steel wool (or as Rob Chapman has said: "they held baby polar bears by their legs and brushed the tops of the guitars" - of course I am sure no baby polar bears were hurt during the making of the guitars). It is a very cool finish, but easy to fill with permanent fingerprints.
I love the red version, but this grey and the black one look killer too.
Really nice guitar series. Thanks for producing these informative reviews.
"ugd, whatever that is." It's ygd -- Yamaha Guitar Development!
Great indepth demo with the different amps. I enjoy your channel. FYI, I have 2 Yamaha Revstars RS420 (my daughter's) and RS820CR mine. Thank you for the heart. :).
Thanks Diane! Much appreciated!
I own a revstar 502 and i like it, but i find the pricing on the more expensive models confusing compared to the Pacifica line. I mean no name brand pickups, no name non locking tuners, plastic nut and almost 1k€. I have a pacifica 611 with SD pickups, grover lockings, graphtech stuff, wilkinson bridge and you can have them for 600€ and something.
Gimme that dual P90 w/the block inlays & Bigsby (not that I use it frequently). That bad boy is a stunner. If I could get the dark green satin on that guitar, it’d be perfection. Black gloss leaves a LOT of fingerprints, though I could just stop being a lazy ass n polish it after each use. Great review per usual. Love ya man.
-Aaron
I love the rev stars, but I wish Yamaha would reissue the LP cut SG shapes again. Oh boy those were sleeper keepers.🤟🏻
But they did, those are just way more expensive.
sweet. I like the satin blur "AF" guitar the best. gorgeous. I agree locking tuners on ALL guitars are a must not matter what type of bridge.
Not going to lie, my man bits tingled a little bit during the close up shot at 5:12. That thing is pretty!
Don't they wrap the strings for shipping to avoid scratches / dongs to the frets?
Pretty sure that is the reason
I love the first one, it's not like the best for the price considering what other brands offer, but in terms of lp scale guitars, I would definitely get one of these over any Gibson even if the price tag was the same
Great review , as usual. Like the appearance of the cat about a third of the way through . Cat definitely needs to go on a diet . I picked up a revstar rs720b. Yes, they do know how to make guitars in Indonesia. Yamaha has designed an excellent product here. Probably one of the most comfortable guitars I've ever played. Just well-made throughout.
Your cat is just awesome!
Reminds me of a Reverend a bit.
Chris Shawn the reverend Sensei came out decades after Yamaha designed numerous Set-neck dual cutaway designs. This is just their latest variation.
Great Color!!!!!!!..... Yamaha makes great affordable Guitars!!!!......i love my Revy !!!!!
Their starter guitars are awfully basic, but have their perks too... that being said, I believe Yamaha is one of the most underrated guitar makers out there. A great instrument at a fair price! I love them... thanks for doing this series... Makes me want to go find one (sold one years ago because I was stupid) all over again!
Everytime he says "Morgan Ac 20" , it sounds like "Morgen" which is a shorter version of "Guten Morgen" in German it means " (good) morning" and I'm always confused **
LOL!
Love the Revstar lineup but really want to know what guitar stand that is.
That room still blows me away..(eg)...
An 8 ball, some top shelf vodka 24 hrs and jam on😆🤙🤙🤙🎸🎸🙏.And the cat just rockn out
Awesome video! great playing, cat approved!
"Delightfully dope-as-fuck" now, that's a great color name.
These guitars are awesome value after you replace the pickups, mine were way too boomy.
Henning can i ask what colour value is "Delightfully Dope As Fuck"?
7.... the value is 7
that room makes me wish I had more ambition to make money. at least I have digital version of about half those head amps via amplitube
Not a fan of the clean tones of most guitars, including this one. But boy does it wail with some distortion. Beautiful looking too. I even love the Yamaha logo symbol. So many guitar companies have the worse aesthetic taste. I believe Yamaha actually hired visual designers to help with these. It shows.
Face up to it Henning - everything you have "fuzzes". :)
Love the revstars but no lefty's! Come on Yamaha!!....
Hey man, nice review! What about the stability of RS820 when playing with strap? Are neck heavy or balance well?
this guy has an effects wall brilliant
There's that bloody cat again :)
Did it seem setup was good out of the box? Or could that maybe not be a consideration considering these were directed to you to demo and they may have taken more time on those details...
hi! for the international guys are you gonna evaluate order of arrival before quality? because I can probably be between the first guys with a cellphone quality video/audio or I could take my time and record properly using DAW and what not
you have two weeks to send it in... have fun with it, do it right... order of arrival isn’t a factor
The pushpot reduces the low end for cutting through lead. Whether it works well or not I can't say.
It acts like a pseudo-single coil, but not really. It has less output when pulled. Personally I am not a fan of it. I'm thinking of swapping out the muddy humbuckers. Other than that, it looks cool and plays well. :)
Revstar 820 vs FGN LS10 or even LS30 thoughts? Are we talking apples and pears here, or the FGNs are not only different price range, but also quality range?
nice guitars
if you're demo-ing all these guitars for Yammy then you really should know about the dry switch mate. Bit of a rookie mistake there....
Blue one looks nice shame it sounds so boomy and dry at least that's the impression I got from RUclips video
"Bigsby licensed" means it's made for Bigsby in Asia. I have a Bigsby-licensed on my D'Angelico and it works just as well as the real Bigsby on my Gretsch.
I don't know, man. I can't see paying $1000 for an Indonesian made guitar. I miss the days of paying $450 USD for a Japanese made Ibanez that was awesome in every way.
I can understand as I bought a Jackson Pro Soloist SL2QMAH for over a Grand with no case made in Indonesia . I like the guitar very much and the set-up was well done BUT it has some Finishing QC problems that should NOT be on a guitar at this price point. I kept the guitar because I like it and the small finishing problems are not a deal breaker for (ME) but I think you are correct in worrying about spending that much on a Indonesian made guitar. I also have a Schecter at the same price point (more or less) that came with ZERO issues from Korea. I think if you are spending a Grand or more I personally do not think I would choose a guitar made in Indonesia again from my experience..
I have two guitars from Indonesia. The material and built quality of these is superb.
Guitar Anthony I purchased the same guitar in January and I must say it’s been one of my favorites ever. I own several guitars such as a 64’ Fender US Jaguar, 63’ Fender US Jazzmaster, 65’ Fender US Mustang, 63’ Fender US Duo Sonic (lol), 79’ Fender US Stratocaster, 94’ US Fender Stratocaster, 2015 Fender MIM Stratocaster HSS, 2017 Reverend Sensei HB Limited Edition Korean, 2018 Reverend BC-1 Billy Corgan Signature Korean, 2018 Reverend Charger 290 Korean, 2004 Ibanez S Series Prestige, 2017 PRS McCarty US - And,,,,,,,, this is only to name some.......
But you sir sound like an imbecile saying you can’t see yourself buying a guitar for $1000 from Indonesia LMAO - don’t buy them because everyone will because you sir buy with your eyes and not by sound and feel. Of course we all miss the days of US and Japanese guitars being the shit and Japanese guitars still our but US not so much. The price of the Yamaha Revstar 820 is well priced and perfect because I’ll tell you this to get the same quality with US or Japanese stamped on it you’ll pay a hell of a whole lot more. I’m not saying you can’t buy a US Fender Stratocaster for this price but trust me it won’t be without compromise and most times where you can’t see that compromise for the heavy paint job lol. Trust me it’ll say US in the serial number but by the time your done modding the crap out of it you’ll have spent way more than a $1,000. And don’t get me wrong Fender is one of my favorite guitars as you can tell from the guitars I own above. I’m a huge Fender, Reverend and Yamaha fan because Reverend and Yamaha are built right and feel/sound just as amazing but most of my Fender’s are vintage besides the MIM Fender Stratocaster which shits on most US Fedner Stratocasters. Fender these days like Gibson it’s all about profit and offer less for more profit.
The day you stop looking with your eyes and judging by where it’s made. The day you start using your ears and feel instead you’ll grow and become better because otherwise your holding yourself back without even knowing it. You say paying a $1,000 is to much but for the same exact US or Japanese model your paying $1,800 to $2,500. Those US and Japanese models for $1,000 or less your getting less and again you can’t see it visually but it’s been cut. Sure back in the day paying $450-$600 for a Japanese Fender was badass and I miss those days too but hasn’t the cost on everything gone up? And yes the typical average salary has stayed the same, I feel it myself as a typical American working a typical 9-5 job. Anyways it’s my thoughts on first hand experience with owning lots of vintage and modern. Today I would first pick Reverend guitars, Yamaha Guitars, Fender MIM and Fender Japanese.
I’ve wrestled with the same thoughts.. then I got my Ibanez AZ Premium.. and then the Axion 7.. Times have changed, Indo and Korean are as good as anything, and the value/$ puts USA/Jap quality at around 1000$. Now changing my guitar player DNA to accept these facts, that’s tough.. but the axes are top knotch (at least in my experience)
Tone King is Awesome.
Does the bigsby stay in tune? I didn't see where you mentioned that.
In the video it doesn't, but that's fresh strings and no setup. I still wonder if just dropping a les trem (Duesenberg) or such would do better.
The bridge pickup sounds dark to me.
The point they are missing about the gig bag is its FREE marketing also - everywhere you take it advertises the parent company... and they pay upwards of 500K a year on marketing globally. Dumb not to include one. And the colour of the first one... comes from automotive, cafe racing bikes, and the stripes.

The bars on the frets look must sharper than the dots on the first guitar. I agree that matte finish would be preferred. i do like the look of the guitars. One last mention... you should look before you back up in your rolling chair. You don't want to run over and crush your cat's paws (which is basically a death sentence). It happens. Sorry, I'm a cat lover and figured I'd mention that. Thanks for the video.

Hey Henning!
Add that to the long list of guitars I now want....Thx Utube! 😁
Has the second guitar got a bigger tone that the RS502 because you left the reverb on ?
Why test through stereotypical stuff like a Marshall at all? Imo it sounded worst through the Marshall. You dont have a Blackstar?
In the style of malcolm young.
Cat approved after a proper string greasing.
To my surprise there's also and 8-series RevStar with FilterTron pickups. However, only with a Bigsby. Is there a good reason for this? Do FilterTrons demand a Bigsby?
Everything is better with a bigsby
I don't know who is copying who, but these Revstars always remind me of Reverend Guitars. They seem to offer similar features and options.
This shape has been used by Yamaha since the late 60s with their Super Flighter series. Search for a Yamaha SF1000 on google. They just updated it by removing the fillets on the edges and making them sharper but it's the exact same body shape. They even have the same split inlays on the SF1000 and the Revstar 702. So I think it's safe to safe Yamaha didn't copy Reverend as Reverend was founded in 1997..
@@spamspasm8183 I was referring more to the features than the shape.
@@alexbreyer6921 Which features in particular? Curious.
@@spamspasm8183 the knob controlling bass tone cut. Locking tuners. The style and placement of the pickups. Nothing that's not seen on guitars, but less frequently at this price point. There's more parallels to Reverend than Fender or Gibson.
@@alexbreyer6921 I see. The knob thing Yamaha has been doing since the 60s too. I have that feature on two Yamaha guitars from the 70s. Not the locking tuners though. Those are new for me.
