Simple Exercise To Improve Piano Hand Independence (Between Left and Right Hands)

  • Here's a simple but powerful exercise that will help you work on your left and right hand independence on the piano. The idea is to focus on technically simple pieces that are easy to play separately in each hand, but really challenge your independence when you bring them together!
    Another exercise for hand independence:
    • Hand Independence Chal...

    To everyone attempting this exercise: Don't try to hear both parts independently at first. Practice very slowly and look at the notes, and simply treat it as two melodies. You will find that with time, and as you (gradually!) speed up, they will start making sense and your brain will come to realize "hey I'm playing the same thing in my left hand as in my right hand!". Once you reach that stage, it's time to slightly change the challenge (e.g. change the delay from 1 bar to 2 bars or 2 beats, or pick another song).

    That feel when you're playing something in one hand, then as soon as you play with the other hand, both hand immediately either stop or start doing the same thing.
    I'm sitting here typing different keys in different areas of a keyboard at high speeds with no issues, yet a piano is this God-awfully difficult thing for my hands. (I guess this is the perfect example of what practice leads to since my hands didn't work with a keyboard well when I started typing either).

    • @Shadowsphere1
      @Shadowsphere1 7 лет назад +76

      But I was kinda' hoping my brain would have been able to translate typing independence to the piano because my hands aren't too different in positioning.

      AZMUZICK I started out on guitar but was at home with the family piano.. took lessons too..I would say that you have put extra stress and expectations on yourself..remember the piano is an alien instrument at first .take baby steps..use what you learned on guitar and apply it as often as possible. Of course changing keys of guitar is extremely easy just change fret number. I was working on a Brent Mason solos and could not get up the speed.. tried all day long..my brain was telling me..that's to hard..woke up the next morning .. played it like I had played it all my life..occasionally revisit this .. put it under watch later if nothing else.. your brain will figure it out.. on piano I've gone to sleep wake up the next morning and problem solved. I've taken a walk, answered the phone.. came back and played the part that gave me trouble. If you can afford it find good teacher.. but be clear that you want to learn jazz,. All classical teachers as you probably know do not know how to improvise.. sorry to write a book but we both have spent some time with the six string.

    If you want Superior hand independence learn a lot a Bach first. ( along wight your normal materials of course) even if you need to start with easier additions because your just starting, then move to harder music. "Hannon revisited" is excellent as well in all keys. A updated version of the original Hannon that puts more focus on the left hand.
    Also for you beginners, stay away from easy piano books (Terrible idea) meaning simple chord left hand melody right hand. yes its important to learn chords but you need to start with music that immediately challenges the left hand from the beginning. Also get a teacher. Videos and and books are nice but nothing replaces a good teacher who can push you more than you will your self.
    Bach's music duplicates what is being played in the right hand with the left. After being able to play all of Bach's two and three part inventions and Etudes your skill level will be far beyond what you thought you could do before and is a lot more fun that playing exercises. Every single great piano player that has ever been known has had a very close relationship with Bach and trust me its for a reason. ;) Also let me make a oblivious point, lean how to play music where the left hand is challenging. That's it. No real secret here. The left hand in a lot of music is a lot simpler and therefore does not get the same attention that the right does so play music where is does. Beethoven, Chopin pretty much all the classical greats. Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum for the more advanced players. Go play ONE of of Art Tatum transcribed pieces and master it and you will walk away with so much i cant even put into words. Challenge yourself that's the secret. If you try to learn a piece of music and the left hand seems impossible stick with it and don't give up. once your done you will walk away with new found skills. If a left hand part is so hard that you cant put it together right away then slow it down or even learn the left by itself, then right, then together. Break it down and learn measure by measure. Another tip is to practice every song you learn faster than it asks you too. By doing this when you play it at the correct tempo you will be most confident in your playing and will have energy too spare. if you do that you can learn to play anything. Happy practicing :)

    • @Miguel-ke5cq
      @Miguel-ke5cq 7 лет назад +8

      Reuben James i also noticed one needs to have a pretty strong left hand. i try to make the left hand as difficult as i can so i train myself the propper way.
      i am no pro, i am not that good at reading music, but i certainly dont have a crappy ear, and this is how im able to figure out songs on the piano. The problem really comes down to hand independence, is the key to this istrument, there is no other way around. i think every instrument has its particularly challenging aspect, with guitar it might be how fluent one is able to become when picking (alternate picking at high leves is actually quite challenging for most people), with piano, the brainsplitting thing is the challenging aspect. try to play some rock song on piano, when you come to the solo part you might be able to perform the leads no problem, but when you ad the rythmic section (left hand) it can become really, really hard. i tried to play the pot-tool on piano. left hand by its self=no problem, right hand=no problem. together=mindfuck.
      im still trying to solve the problem of my coordination. i think i might go lefthanded in my day to day life in order to develop some degree of ambidexterity to see how that helps

    • @reubenjames3651
      @reubenjames3651 7 лет назад +35

      Really in piano your left hand will always be lacking. the left hand is the bass\ rythem section. almost all music in the piano world is dominated by the right hand. One reason why bach is stressed. Bach is the mother of hand seperation and also just playing alot. I mean alot. When i was kid I practiced for least two or three hours a day on average. The guys you can see that just lay down fat stuff and make it look so easy have put thousands of hours into there craft. There really is no easy method as many online lesson and books claim. Hard work, very hard work gets you to effortless playing and even then you still need daily or weekly rehearsal to maintain. I still run through Bach and other classical music help keep my hands in good shape. Chopin, Bethoven both had demanding left hands along with many others. keep playing and you'll get there, Along with practicing songs and such, always be working on a very challenging piece. something way above your level and work it measure by measure until its finished. you will walk away with a higher level of skill each time you do this. Something that takes 2 to three months to get nailed down is the ideal time or hardness level for such a task and something you love you will keep you working on it. if you don't love it chances are you won't stick to it, good luck.

      That's why you need to pick very simple melodies and play slowly. And only do this after you can play the melody fluently in each hand alone.

      IceCreeper28 learn a simple song that uses both hands like the beginning of All Of Me-John Legend. Repeat repeat then eventually youll be used to playing two hands. Doesnt mean it will always be easy tho

    • @brandonknable7890
      @brandonknable7890 6 лет назад +1

      IceCreeper28 when you learn a song, you are also learning when to use your left hand and when to use your right and even both, etc. Play slowly. Slow slow slow. Try mastering a left hand part of a simple song then try the right hand, treat them as both separate parts. Then try to play both hands slowly over and over until you can do the whole song. Its constant practice but don't get frustrated. Its part of the process

    from my experience, the trick is to gain mastery of each hand's part one at a time. muscle memory is essential to mending that awkward feeling your brain has when it's trying to multitask. be able to play 1 hand with your eyes closed, then the other.

    Thanks for this beautiful tip. I know the video is at least 5 years old, hope you are still answering questions? My Doubts - 1) At what point in a piano learning course should I bother to do this? I am in my early 40s and new to piano, i used to learn violin some years back but there also did not make much progress. Some of the beginner lessons I tried on Piano had both hands play in-sync so they are much easier, eg. when I need to play just chords on the left hand, the time-signature in both clefs always matches, and when there is one note on right side, there is either exactly just another note on the left side, or no notes on the left side, and then after some time again when there is a note on the left side, i can press it along with exactly just one note on the right side and so on. (I believe no hand-independence is required here because you have time to decide - ok here we go G on the right hand little finger - and C on the left hand thumb - press together.. that's it. somehow i feel there is no hand-independence here because i can easily manage this). So should I keep doing that for now and not try to do hand independence now until much later? 2) If I do this hand independence exercise, how exactly should i break this up in my brain? Should I try to connect both sides in my brain and play it together slow? Or really develop independence in brain so that both hands can literally do independent things without the other hand knowing - means the goal would be to play moonlight sonata on the right side and play pirates of the carribean with the left?

    I tried this with scales the other day. Yes, it's very helpful and not easy. Scales is a good way to start this because you don't need to think of any set melody, you're just getting used to the independence in the hands.

      Majed Kalaoun Majed Kalaoun it sounds like you’re a better piano player than me! i’ve learned a couple of really hard pieces (mostly so if someone makes me play for them i’ve got more impressive stuff than g3 mozart rondos or whatever), but my skill level is still quite low. i have found, though, that learning a handful of low-level (though still somewhat challenging) pieces has improved my ability much more than learning really hard stuff. i spent a year getting all of the rachmaninoff transcription of the bach violin partita #3 down, and at the end of it i was only really better (in terms of how it felt when improvising or learning new stuff) by the same increment as by a couple of months with grade 3 or 4 pieces, like reinecke sonatinas (which i really like!), and playing them without looking at the keyboard. i think doing this is makes you better more quickly, which isn’t to say learning hard stuff is bad, just that it can slow you down in absolute terms. in any case, i wish you the best of luck on your musical journey. hope you got that liszt down!

    4 days since I started to seriously practice the Piano daily and I nearly completed the first point of this challenge. I can play Marry had a little lamp slow with both hands independently (1 bar apart) with 1 or 2 mistakes, but it needs some more practice to perfect it and I still can't hear the two melodies apart, have to speed it up gradually with time I suppose. I'll try the other examples you showed in the vid, once I comepleted the first ^^
    In the beginning my brain felt like its getting massaged from the inside, then it felt swollen, like when you did liftups with your muscles and they have this swollen and warm pulsating feeling afterwards. Sometimes my stomach even felt strange and upset, yesterday I might have taken it too far as I got a long lasting headache from that practice session... It's a surreal feeling, I never felt something like that in my brain, is this how it feels to split the brain and thinking processes into 2 sepereate minds, how it feels when a new synaptic connection is formed out of seemingly nothing in your brain?

For me, looking at sheet music really helps with this, as a pose to trying to learn from a RUclips tutorial where the coloured bars come down onto keys (impossible and extremely slow), never do this. I need to ask you something. Are you sure that the 2 hands are playing different things on their own? Or maybe I should ask this in another way; when your 2 hands are playing different rhythms, doesnt your brain kind of view all the key presses with different hands as a one single thing instead of the simultaneous execution of 2 different things?
    When I play 2 different rhythms simultaneously, im not playing 2 rhythms simultaneously, my ears and my brain dont hear 2 different rhythms at the same time, it only hears and feels successive notes, one following the other, regardless of whether the keys are pressed with different hands.
    You just have to memorize what to press with your right hand, and then what to press after that note with your left hand, and then what to press with your right hand etc.. It's not like you'll be playing 2 different things with 2 different thought processes, but actually you'll really be doing 1 single thing.

    • @blackrainb0w
      @blackrainb0w 3 года назад

      I know what you're saying, it's actually the same way i thought about it. Its a linear process and with practice it becomes seamless. The brain has to fill in new linear instructions that it's not used to doing but with enough practice, it is easily possible. When i am playing a piece with 2 hands i don't feel like my hands are playing different parts, it just feels like one piece.

    You don't need practice. You just need to be democratic. Do a hanxit.
    "Left hand your votes"
    2 Fingers agree.
    "Right hand, yours."
    1 Thumb and 3 fingers agree.
    "By majority of votes you hands are now independent!"
    Told ya. Thank me now.

      Would that also imply your hand would then secede from the rest of the body?

      I have a lot of X-rated jokes I'd like to make about this, but I'll refrain.

    This is just like Back's 2nd part Invention. But haven't realize to practice it on my own until you shared it. Thank you.

    Here is the solution to hand independence. Play a lot Bach, that's it. master him and you master hand independence.

      So if there was a song that was written this way, only an ambidextrous person could do it? Lol...

    You are a good guy and a very well spoken one. By telling this is correct. Is a must to pair this exercises with assigning Finger's Number(So the "player" and his brain deal with the trick). You are making a video for everyone, not for mid range musicians(A usefull one). Good job after all.

    I play the saxophone so learning the piano is tough for me because in wood wins and brass your only playing one note at a time

      ChanceThePianist well I have friends that play both, but I only play the sax. I'm better now than when I wrote this comment but playing with both hands is still challenging to me

      i can relate, I've been playing the flute for years and playing 2 notes at a time is so confusing!!!! wishing you luck

      Alex Pollock I play the Clarinet and I've always wanted to play the piano, this exercise definitely helps me although it is very stressing, it will be worth it!

      I feel like the flute actually helps me play piano due to our insanely random fingerings. Unlike saxophone, (mostly) when you put down each finger the notes go lower, sometimes for flute in order to make the note higher we push down more keys

    I’m a beginner and I find this pretty easy.. by seeing the comments I wonder if I’m doing it wrong or not lol.. I just started the exercise as if I didn’t know the song at all and I just read the notes and it turned out easy!!!
