I'm a keyboard player and I took a few drums lessons thinking I'm going to learn about drums to be a better arranger, turns out I learned about rhythm to be a better keyboard player. I definitely recommend this idea.

This guys makes it look so easy, it took me a while to even get the left hand alone right 😆
Anyway great method and great explanation! I'll start integrating this into my daily training routine.
Some tips I found for those who find it too difficult: 1) visualize the beats on a linear graphs, emphasizing the strong beats. Sheet music are sometimes not the most intuitive for time visualization. 2) Try with your hands tapping on your legs first, this is much easier then playing. 3) try playing a single note for each hand, this is must easier then playing the full pattern. 3) try the full pattern.
I think those temporary levels of difficulties will make it easier if going straight into this exercise is too hard for you
Those are good tips. Focusing on the rhythm only is very useful to build coordination gradually.

I really struggled with the left hand too at first, some more tips:
- Use a metronome with 16th note subdivisions. Slow it way down until you get the feel of the riff.
- Play only the first 3 (or even 2) notes of the riff and double them up. This is still plenty challenging for me right now, and allows me to practice all the right hand note groupings.
Definitely a great and deep exercise! I feel I'll be chewing on this for a while :)
Ha, yeah, the (advanced) part is pretty key in the title. I was able to get the left hand up to speed with a metronome quickly enough but even tapping quarter notes with my right hand... woof.
For me, rhythm is my biggest challenge. I'll need much practice for this but I have a goal now.
Hand independence has been my holy grail in recent years and your approach to it is just what I've needed. I had believed that I could develop my ability to have both halves of my brain operate as independent entities but that hasn't worked. There may be people who can do it but I'm not one of them. Your technique, with the focus on both hands as a single entity playing rhythmic patterns, is the key. Many thanks.

I think this is good, the only thing I would add is encouraging the use of melodic shapes earlier on. Even being able to just play a quarter note melody to start can feel very musical, and, depending on the progression, will help you think more about the key and how to phrase a melody which are also important.

I've often had the same thought, that what people refer to as hand independence is really hand coordination, at least in the beginning. Some drummers, like Danny Carey, can play multiple different patterns with different limbs, but that's very advanced stuff.

Great video! I'm only 6 months into piano, but love syncopated genres like Jazz and Funk - so this looks like something I'll need to work up to.
So far I've found myself sight reading melodies and harmonies, but relying on videos of other people playing to work out rhythms. I'm also not one to count rhythm while I practice. How important is counting? Do people still do it much later in their music careers?
Thank you! It is advanced, but I'm glad you find it helpful!
Counting is important. Not necessary to do it out loud, but what really matters is having awareness of how the rhythms you play align to the pulse and to the measure. The goal is to understand rhythm in relationship to a pulse and not to only memorize how it sounds by ear. At some point, the "counting" becomes internalized and you can just feel the pulse and subconsciously know where you are. The way to get there is to always count and use a metronome anytime you practice or learn new music.

Thank you for putting together this innovative and extremely useful (albeit challenging) approach to developing hand indepen...excuse me... hand coordination. Hand coordination - particularly rhythmic hand coordination - is one of the skills I most struggle with developing as an intermediate keyboard player. I have always wondered if those who have mastered this simply have a differently wired brain that enables them to simultaneously monitor and control both hands. Or instead is it more a case of focusing on and having full awareness and control over the resulting COMBINED rhythmic pattern that is revealed by the individual rhythms playing together? It seems to me that the foundation of the exercises in this Groovetude video is in fact based upon the latter approach - namely to focus on the combined pattern that is revealed by the hands together. Is that an accurate observation?

Awesome video and exercises José. Never seen one like it aimed at piano. Reminds me a lot of drum practice I used to do to achieve limb independance.
Maybe this question is obvious, and I suspect the answer to be yes, but will practicing these exercises aid the right hand when improvising over looped chord progressions for example? Giving it more freedom to play inbetween the beat and perhaps aid the left hand in adding extra bass notes off beat too? Just curious to know if it would apply to "real world" playing once the brain has the feelings locked in

These methods will help you with anything that involves two handed coordination. You can apply it to any chord progression, just make sure you create some kind of repetitive left hand accompaniment pattern and stick to it. You need some kind of steady framework that keeps you accountable and forces you to be rhythmically aware of everything you play. You can also flip the hands and play something repetitive on the right hand and practice developing improvisational freedom on the left hand.

How do we mentally sub-divide each beat into quarter beats, to hit the right hand note? I could only hit it in sync with the left note.. Even the metronome is not playing those sub-divisions..
You can try speaking a 4 syllable word on each beat or simply counting 1234 fast on each beat, that should help you get the feel for the subdivision. If this is your first time trying out any kind of 16th note syncopation, I would suggest for you to try something way simpler. This exercise is very challenging!
@Groovetude Indeed, I tried the same thing (splitting into 16) as I checked out some drumming videos too. I could figure out the correct accents. Thanks!
The only problem that remains now is doing left hand 16th note and right quarter note accents together.
In fact, I realized there is an irony here. We do have a sense of correct rhythm in our brain that helps us align the left hand pattern with random accents correctly & repeatedly. But the problem appears only when we try to divide that equally (with right hand) to add accents simultaneously while playing the left hand accents.
Hand-coordination is an essential skill for Piano-playing and one can't go too far without it. Knowing music theory doesn't help here either.
I reckon I have to give up now. I have been singing all the while and never had rhythm issues while singing. But this is probably the end of what I can achieve on Piano :(
You need to start with way simpler patterns and work your way up to something like this very slowly. It takes a long time to develop these skills. Drum videos are usually very helpful for this topic. Keep learning and don't get discouraged. Good luck

One more strange thing I found - Substituting mouth for the left hand pattern and still using the right hand for quarter notes also works. But then it doesn't remain a hand-coordination thing any more..
i can't do the second and third cell for the 1 note per group for some reason. Any tips?
Those two are the hardest ones! I would recommend you figure out exactly where they land in relationship to the left hand and then slowly practice the whole two handed rhythmic structure, thinking of it as one unit and not as separate hands. As you gradually get more comfortable with it, you will start feeling it as two separate parts. Also remember to not shift your perception of the pulse and to practice with a metronome to keep yourself in check.

I can’t even do the first exercise, my right hand always instinctually develops the rhythm of the left hand and I can’t do anything about it.
Don't get discouraged. I would suggest you try something easier, these examples are for advanced players
You sound and feel left out.
Usually always down to a misunderstanding unique to the player (you have to have random things that others can do easily be hard and sometimes invisible to just you alone)
I recommend you attempt an exercise with notes you prefer rather than 'first exercise'.
*Not something you really like though*, as that is already playable and part of your team and requires minimal efforts to achieve.
This most likely won't work either.
This being said, still go ahead with it by mapping/preparing/setting your fingers on the keys with out pushing down.
Attempt the rhythm of the exercise by tapping the keys lightly enough not make them sound.
If this is definitely not feeling likely to be successful.
The other way is the illogical discordant way of attempting it with the worst choice of notes you would ever choose/recommend.
Make the right and left hands choice of notes sound good when played by them selves, but are extremely discordant when played together.
Still nothing??
Put your hands closer together.
or double the length of your notes (½note = 1 note)
Also, the first example recomended of anything is commonly not suitable as it is usually decided by a person who is capable of all the exercises and much more. Their judgments of what's best for the level you are now at, can be 10-30 years more attempted and richer in sound by the time they get to release a book or suggest.
I know you will not even consider these let alone attempt them, in which case i wish you peace.
