Good lord that's a nice-looking watch, and in a great size! I also love chronos, and thank you Maen for not cramming in a date window bewteen the subdials!!!! If only I had an extra $1700....
I like what Maen are doing right now producing so top quality watches
maen, what a beautiful piece. between baltic, nivada and maen, we're spoilt for choice!
Agreed
Love the smaller diameter with the long lugs look👏
Just love that it's a hand cranker! Well done Maen. ❤
Wonderful review! 👌Another beautiful creation for Maen. I reviewed the Hudson MK4 a few months ago and the fit and finish is very impressive. This new Chrono is simply gorgeous.
Very nice looking watch with great dimensions & a killer movement.
Beautiful watch! And it's a steal at $1,600! Anyone that thinks they can get a used Speedy for $1600 hasn't been looking at the 2nd hand market in a couple of years. Try $2500-3000 for a REALLY used, beat up Speedy. $5,000-8,000 for a lightly used newer model.
Speedy racing new is going for $3,300 - $3500 and is a steel at that price every other speedy going for silly money
@@keefw361 I'll accept that this is the price for a Speedy Racing, but That's TWICE the price of this watch. Should we really start comparing watches that are double the amount of each other? Is that at all a reasonable comparison?
@@keefw361speedy racing to have a speedy are for pretenders.
@@KC-bv9kf what an ignorant comment. Speedy racing has heritage in the omega watch collection and they were making racing models before the moon landing and the birth of the "moonwatch"
Another beautiful & well done review. I've been a Maen fan & owner for a while now. Thanks Peter.
Cheers 🥃
Finishing looks amazing..
Looks like a beauty! Gotta say I love what Maen has been doing, especially the Brooklyn 36 Triple Calendar. It would certainly be a tough choice between the Skymaster and the Baltic Tricompax!
😍 Lovely looking watch. 👍
Been waiting for a Review to be done on the Maen Skymaster 38 MK3, Thank you so much.
Its a real beauty thats for sure, I am taken back by the overall finish and feelings on the wrist..very impressed
@@PeterKotsa I really want to buy one but its quite expensive and this is not including the shipping, import and other taxes.
My personal gripes would be branding and the huge lug gaps when fitted with the leather strap, along with quick release and on-the-fly adjustment as stated by yourself
Yes! I don't see the point in making a 38mm watch with the lug-length of a 41-42mm watch. I makes no sense (to me).
A beauty. Thanks
It's AMAZING...
Great stuff, instant subscribe dude. Just bought the limited edition Maen Manhattan. They crush it in looks every time.
Thanks for the sub and enjoy the watch
Great video
Love this brand. Really want to add a manhatten to my collection
Gorgeous watch, I may have to get one after I get my first GMT...
In the same boat as you. Been SCOURING RUclips for a good looking gmt that suits my taste. MAEN’s Hudson has really done it for me. This chronograph is unbelievable too
It sure is a lovely offering and priced fairly as well but personally I just love what Gretchen offers alot more maybe because I'm more into their vintage designs and quality and I always enjoy and appreciate your honest reviews and epic photography really does any watch that you feature Thanks for sharing as always my friend and Be well 👍
🙏
What Gretchen?
@@robbbberyNivada Grenchen he just made a typo
A great review as usual. I don’t normally look at chronographs, but I have to say this is possibly one of the best, or might be the best looking from what I remember. It certainly is an eye-catcher and looks stunning from any angle.
Totally agree
🤣
As a ugly as it gets, but each to their own.
@@DrDjDD🤥you lie🤥lol.
@@PickAnyNameButMine What lie?!!! , it's my opinion ffs.
Artem strap review that would be great - tell artem to make their 19mm straps in shorter lengths - they do it for all their other size but not 19mm go figure! Oh and the Maen review is great.
Nice proportions, and I love the simplicity. But geez… it’s hard not to yawn at yet another panda. The only watch that’s made me perk up recently is from Direnzo.
I wish maen bring back their moonphase watch too..
What a beauty with great sizing proportions. Maen offers a lot of value with their pieces the only downside for me would be on the fly adjustment. I enjoy a larger crown. Good review Peter, and I love the old intro song being back.
Through popular demand the intro is back..😊😂
Thanks for the review, 38mm is just a tad small for me, but I can see the appeal.
In 42mm this would look perfect on your wrist bro 👍
Thanks for sharing Peter. This one seems to have a great balance of “old” in a modern configuration and that movement looks fantastic!
Nice review. Can you confirm the exact lug to lug measurement your calipers gave (to nearest 0.1mm if you can remember)? The Maen website says 47mm, your review says 48mm. Thanks
I measured 47.9mm
Great review Peter. Did you find any sharp edges on the clasp? I did on my Maen Hudson 38 GMT which has a similar clasp.
Nothing that bothered me
If anything it was extremely comforting
Inlove with this watch!!! Should I sell my Hamilton Intramatic Chrono for this, Pete?
The Hamilton is a very nice looking watch and you bought it for a reason, because it spoke to you in some way or another.
At the end of the day it comes down to personal taste and preferences..I cant tell you, (neither can anyone) what to buy or sell..thats totally your subjective decision.
If you do sell it though, just remember you're going from an automatic to manual wind..cheers 👍
I wear watches mainly for aesthetic reasons. Chronographs generally offer functionality I wouldn't use, thus challenging and distracting resources away from aesthetic execution and driving prices up in the process. Still, I can appreciate when a chronograph is nicely designed and I agree this is one such instance.
Hi Peter, you talked about a ceramic bezel, but isnt the black one also stainless steel?
I could be wrong, I was under the impression it was Ceramic..
Thanks for pointing that out Matthijs, cheers 👍
Beautiful watch. Must be really new as I can't find it on the Maen website
Comes out on the 8th of this month
I like the alpha chronograph in this price range
What´s with the 7 miles long pushers??
This looks like a true “box crystal” with a sharp shoulder. I understand that these are subject to damage or popping off when struck a glancing blow. That’s what happened to George Mallory’s watch on Everest in 1924. The crystal popped off during his fall and stopped the hands at 1:27AM. Of course that was a flexible celluloid crystal.
it would be nice if you also reviewed the movement and accuracy
I thought about that, but being a pre production version, I didn't think it would be applicable. On the wrist I noticed this ran very close to cosc in its daily deviation
It's a beautiful watch. I think the pushers and the lugs are a little too long. It contains a premium movement, however for a microbrand it's priced ambitiously.
Thanks for the feedback! The pushers on the production models will actually be slightly shorter! :)
Im not a fan of the big lugs. Id prefer a more discrete operation type, however the dial is very very impressive
Great looking and offers alot for the price! I agree with your niggles. Nothing beats the legibility of my Speedmaster however and I don't mind winding it daily. It's hands down the most wearable chronograph ever. I didn't catch the weight on this? Is it upward of 160 grams?
140g sized to my 18cm wrist..its ideal
140 grams
You nailed it, Peter. That price is a pretty good deal for an auto-chrono…
A standard Sinn three-hander is going to cost you about the same amount…
Its a manual wind, but with plenty of power reserve
@@PeterKotsa Ah! Cheers! My mistake…
@@eggsII all good brother 😊
👍👍👍
I like it, well I like the reverse panda more for its legibility. However, the price I see on the website is EUR 1994, that's too much. I would buy instead Hamilton Chrono for such money. Intra-Matic for vintage look, Jazzmaster for the more modern touch, or I will go save a tiny bit more and buy Longines avigation big eye chrono instead.
My biggest gripes are your own, first and foremost: lack of on the fly adjustment clasp. If Christoper Ward can do it for cheaper, heck if Jody of just launched Erebus Origin can do it at 299 usd, I think Maen can do it at 2000usd?
I think it is an overlook that cannot be justified.
Secondly, quick release on the bracelet, that is such a life saver when changing straps.
I guess looking forward to MkIV...
A hanhart pioneer 417 would be my choice. Manual wind with a screw down crown on the Maen seems an odd choice.
From my understanding, the production version is not going to have a screw down crown, these are manual wind, so that was an oversight in the pre-production piece
Albeit, that Hanhart is lovely indeed 👍👍
I bought the skymaster mk1. It looks good and from certain angles looks extremely high quality. Movement is silky smooth. Down sides are that the quality control is terrible. Hands are crooked and not properly aligned. The bracelet can be quiet harsh on the wrist. For the price, they should really do better.
I agree Peter great looking watch 👍 the only chronograph i own is the Sea-Gul 1963 . I'm in negotiations now for a Gold 14kt vintage Chronograph Suisse for my 70th birthday .
Very nice Junior and happy birthday when the day arrives 🥃
do u like the TIMEX MARLIN?
Nice looking watch 👍
Thanks for the proper review. I’ve been waiting for this watch but I’ll let it pass. It looks too much like the seiko speedtimer. It is a bit too boxy.
My pleasure..
Personally, I think the Echo Natura Cortina 1956 is the best looking new chrono.
Do you think 38mm is too small for a bezeled watch?
Yes and no
I actually enjoyed this variant being a lighter dial and it wore very well
I love the lack of text on the dial.
Not wishing to sound too fussy, but at the price they're asking I would've liked to see the name applied, not printed. Still like it though!
It screams " I wish I was a speedy"
Dear Peter. Do you have any job openings? I'm kinda purchasing anything you review and never regret... Howeverrrrrr 😂
Jokes aside. I do agree Maen Watches do pass the quality standards with flying flags. However.... I have to point out they have to find their own design language yet... and it feels like they have a bit of a long hard road ahead. It's easy to get lost in the shuffle. You know what I mean?
Hahaha..I am struggling trying not to buy everything that comes my way as well..
Its a good thing I have an 8 watch rule..or else I would be very POOR indeed 😂
@@PeterKotsai had the sapphire sandwich and the pistachio on wrist yesterday and was gonna pick up one of the 2 this weekend.
This review just swerved that car into a ditch.
I guess I’ll let my AD know that I will need more time….
Arghhhhh…..,
@@KC-bv9kf haha, you need to get the car out of that ditch..use the car jack, change that spare tyre and when your back on the road you will see clearly 😊
38mm- my perfect watch size , my wrist measures 7.5inch , could wear 42mm watch , but I think , that big cases are really vulgar.
This or the baltic tricompax? ;)
I’ve not handled the tricompax from Baltic yet, so I can’t compare
Price ?
It’s in the video.
Mark up of 20% in 3 weeks ... bizarre
Looks very nice but 38 is too small, no adjustable clasp, and the name is weird.
haha, those pushers are basically crown guards.
Can somebody explain to me why is the watch firstly presented here at 1500 Eur, than appears at 1800 Eur in some screenshots, AND NOW IT'S 1994 EUR??? (Discounted from €2,099.00) what in the earth kind of advertising is this???
Very nice, but $2,000 will also get you a very reasonable Omega Speedmaster !
Plus another $800 to have it serviced.
no speedmaster that costs 2,000 is a reasonable speedmaster 😂. It will be a very undesirable model, super old using an old an inferior movement to the speedies of today, and will be extremely beat up.
My Speedmaster is super old (1969 -year of moon landing). and It is still in excellent condition. the speedies of today are modern versions of the original.
One critique from me would be the poor legibility of the time on this cream dial. The reverse pandy dial is beautiful though
Its way to expensive and has shrek ears,Seiko speedtimer and Jay Leno speedtimer murder this watch literally!!
remember the guy that asked you if it was free to subscribe to your channel? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂
Those super long lugs kill it for me! On the bracelet it’s passable at best, but on a strap it looks horrendous. The gaping between strap and case is huge and down right ugly!
On a positive note, I like those Artem straps, but sadly I couldn’t justify the exorbitant price tag.
Regards,
Dazza. 🇬🇧
Too Homage for me
Pushers a tad too long. Crown diameter marginally too big.
Vintage in its aesthetics..thats the whole point 👍
@@PeterKotsa ..... Pity, otherwise a perfect watch that I would be happy to own.
@@PeterKotsavintage or not, it’s ugly.
Exactly what I thought. They stick out a little too much.
Pushers on the production models will be slightly shorter. This is a prototype.
Nope, nope, nope. This is all wrong. It’s an absolute mess with multiple conflicting design language aspects. The bezel has excessive outward angle. The rehot is inappropriate. The endlinks are clearly wrong. The pushers are too long. The dial finish is incomplete (missing a finishing step). Lugs should be streamlined. Hand pinions are too prominent. Clearance over the indices is poorly executed besides being oversized. The crystal back is not properly flush and is mismatched to the rotor which hasn’t been correctly skeletonized.
Looks like this was designed by an intern who hasn’t graduated from industrial design school. This is a good example of a 50% complete prototype. Are you sure you received the correct watch or are following the correct script?
This is there pre production version
That said, I believe the pushers will be shorter in the production model
Cheers
Are youtubers allowed to disclose how much they are paid for a review?
I take time off work to be able to dedicate time to videotape and photograph a watch review properly (usually 2 full days, approximately 12-18 hours) plus wearing the watch for 7 days to observe it and critique it
When it comes to sponsorship of a video, all I ask is the supplier to throw a few dollars my way to compensate for my time off work) that way it keeps the wife happy and I can still pay some bills and keep making videos
My full time work pays me around $200-$250 per hour, where as sponsored videos is around 10% of that in comparison
That should give you a rough guide
Cheers
I just can't deal with their branding, soooo cruel, generic and ugly
